Appearance

Play By: Sendhil Ramamurthy
Distinguishing Features:

Amir possesses the dark skin and dark brown eyes of his people. His midnight black hair is never out of place, even after a day of strenuous work or a long walk through the jungles of his homeland. He prefers to be clean-shaven, even though usually wears a day or three of stubble. During times of sorrow or deep contemplation of Mother Night’s mysteries, he will allow his beard to grow until he has found his center and his answers.

Personality

Personality:

Amir Sankar does not consider himself a true Nharkavan. He cannot accept his station in life, wallowing in the jungle and accepting what the “gods” provide. The celebrations his people engage in, while enjoyable, are just distractions from their inability to control their lives. Nharkava should be the equal of Glacia, Dhemlan, even Little Terreille in terms of the power and culture it possesses, but continually falls short. Amir’s studies of history and religion showed him the truth:

Nharkava flourishes whenever it is ruled by outsiders and flounders whenever its own people attempt to rule.

There’s no shame in this. Some people are not meant to rule. Everyone needs help to purify their souls before they return to the Darkness. The ignorant and uninspired Blood around him call the Dark Religion a cover for slavery. Amir knows better: the Dark Religion grants everyone a place beneath its banner. He is Light Jeweled and in need of greater guidance to heal his soul’s flaws. He would despair his situation if not for the Dark Religion’s mandate of protection and guidance to the Light Jeweled and the Jewelless. These twin promises grant him the serenity and courage to dig deeper into himself, and seek Mother Night’s will in all that he does. Someday, he will win the battle against his flawed nature and achieve redemption. Only then can he return to the Darkness in preparation for his next life.

Ministering to his people, Amir strives to show each and every Light Jeweled man, woman, and child that the Dark Religion is their best hope for saving Nharkava. The Rebellion provokes uncertainty in an otherwise ordered world. He works with like-minded Priestesses to explain and deliver the Dark Religion to those who are unsure of its freedom. He also helps Glacia's prophets root out members of the Rebellion and the insurgents who would steer people away from the true path to feed their own egos.

Amir understands Nharkava’s problems and that Nharkava’s people must change and grow if they are to survive. Above all, he wants to help.

He is beset by the short-sighted at every turn. They label him a traitor, a collaborator, a house pet of the benevolent Glacian people. In his youth, he questioned his lessons and beliefs. Was he wrong? Was he part of the problem? A Communion with the Darkness showed him the truth: the people standing against him are chained by ignorance and emptiness of the soul. They called him weak because he was free. They are hypocrites of the highest order, but Amir cannot, will not, give up. Mother Night challenged him to recognize the flaws in his soul and overcome them.

He must help others do the same.

Amir’s greatest conflict arises from a call rooted deep inside of his soul, a voice that whispers to him in the middle of the night and screams whenever he engages in prayer. He wants to be a Priest of the Darkness, training into that sacred Caste in order to confer directly with Mother Night and the Darkness, bringing those blessings to her children. He is Light Jeweled and impure of soul, barring him from deeper understanding of the mysteries of the Darkness.

Worse, he is male and the Dark Religion abhors the training of males into female castes. Twice cursed, Amir’s secret pain manifests in increased prayer and deference to the Glacian peoples he emulates and strives to understand.

Has he set his aim too high? Is this task meant to purify his soul and raise him up? Or is he damned to impurity because of the fools around him? These questions are iron weights tied around his soul that threaten to drag him into madness and an early return to Mother Night.

But when a child seeks him out to hear more about the Dark Religion or a Light Jeweled woman asks how she can learn to spread the Dark Religion like him, offering her body for his comfort, Amir’s resolve strengthens and he redoubles his efforts to become a prophet to his people.

If Amir cannot save this generation, he will shepherd the next.

Likes:
  • 1.The Dark Religion: The Dark Religion promises a place for all peoples beneath its banner, regardless of standing in the Abyss, possession of Jewels, Caste or circumstances of birth. Mother Night is real and she grants her blessings to all who heed her chosen people. The Dark Religion grants Amir a sense of peace that he believes will only be matched on the day he finds the Queen of his soul. Until that female presents herself, Amir’s strongest passions lay in studying the tenets of the Dark Religion, aiding loyal Priestesses, serving his (Glacian) leaders, and removing those who would subvert the laws of the land.

  • 2. Service: As a Prince, Amir finds himself uniquely suited to teach and provide knowledge to others regarding the lay of the land for Nharkava. Whenever possible, he acts as a guide through the jungles of Nharkava to earn money. In his spare time, he cleans temples, teaches young children to read, and subtly guides his people toward understanding their place in life (as illustrated in the Dark Religion). The Dark Jeweled are meant to lead, while the Light Jeweled follow and keep them grounded. Too many people let pride define service a negative, but Amir’s greatest pride is using his gifts to further a noble cause.

  • 3. Glacian Culture: Glacians are elegant, civilized, and deadly. Amir studies their art, their food, and their culture for insight on how these powerful people have changed their land for the better. The Dark Religion has made Glacia dominant and keeps them dominnant. Meanwhile, Nharkava flounders. If his own people had the will to raise themselves up, they would not need Glacia to do it for them now.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Being a Light Jeweled Male: For all of Amir’s education and love for the Dark Religion, there’s a part of him that deeply resents his status both male and Light Jeweled. If Mother Night is testing him, She did not hold back in her judgement. His words and beliefs would hold greater weight issued from the mouth of a man with deep standing in the Abyss. He would be nigh-unstoppable as a Dark Jeweled Priestess, winning hearts and minds by the score as he illustrated the Dark Religion for all to see. Instead, he holds the fervor and faith of the Dark Jeweled trapped in a flawed form and working off a debt of impurity from a former life. The injustice of it wounds his soul.

  • 2. Nharkavan Summers: Amir hates the sweltering of the jungle in the summer. The humidity and heat taxes his Cooling Craft and makes his clothing damp and stuck to his skin. He’d leave Nharkava for Glacia if there was any way to make it happen.

  • 3. The Rebellion: The only thing worse than Light Jeweled people complaining about their lot in life are the Landen who comprise the Rebellion. The Landen are deserving protection by (and from) the Blood, who are their caretakers and superiors. The Rebellion attempts to turn that formula on its head by seeking equality with their betters. There is no equality between the tiger and the rabbit. For now, Amir only passes on the information he learns of the Rebellion to the Glacians who will eventually wipe them out. Should they grow more bold, however, Amir would bend himself toward their destruction without regard to shared country of origin or other relationships.

    Fears:

  • 1. Failing to purge his soul in this life: Amir knows that his failure to obtain deeper standing in the Abyss stems from a flaw in his soul, likely carried over from previous lives. Each day that he wakes up is one more chance to atone and, hopefully, purge his soul for the next life. But all of his service and his conversion of others to the truth has no visible effect on his cosmic debt. He’s afraid, deep down, that nothing he can do will ever cleanse his soul enough for Mother Night’s approval. Still he works longer and harder each day and prays for a sign that his sins are forgiven.

  • 2. Dying for his beliefs: Amir knows that his views are not popular. For every person that agrees with him, three more call him a traitor and collaborator. Thus far, none of them have harmed him, but the unenlightened resort to violence when they can’t bully him into backing down.  Amir worries for the day that the glares and whispers become a mob of angry people howling for his blood as a message to that the Dark Religion will not be tolerated.

  • 3. Bonding to a Light Jeweled Queen: In Amir’s nightmares, he binds to a Queen with jewels as light as his own. He would rather die. Bonding to a Light Jeweled Queen would be the final proof that his soul is tainted beyond measure and that there is no reason to go on. No comfort or kindness would soothe him in the wake of this sign of Mother Night’s displeasure. Amir’s most fervent and desperate prayers are for a Dark Jeweled Queen who can offer him salvation and guidance and mold him into a better man.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Diplomacy: Amir’s desire to save his people (from themselves) manifests in learning how speak to them. His strength in this Craft manifests in his ability to determine what a person most needs to hear to bolster their confidence...or least needs to hear to damage their conviction. Several of his converts are the unwitting victims of his Craft. Amir sees it as the Price for seeking the ultimate truth.

  • 2. Voice Manipulation: Amir’s steadfast belief in the Dark Religion, combined with his natural confidence and charm, expresses itself in a warm baritone that captures the listener’s ear and refuses to let go. This subtle influence lends weight to his words, cajoling others into contemplating, and even accepting, his suggestions and ideas. This talent, combined with his skill in Diplomacy, makes many of his ideas hard to forget even after they leave his presence.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Vanishing Objects: Amir can vanish small objects with ease, but anything larger than a soup bowl is impossible. It’s as though his psychic cabinet granted to most Blood is merely a psychic pouch for him. He can keep incense, flint and tinder, and even a small dagger stored away. Attempting anything larger fails automatically and leaves him with a headache. The curses of being Light Jeweled are many and varied.

  • 2. Emotion Manipulation: If Amir could just share the way the Dark Religion makes him feel, if he could show others the sense of peace and purpose he gains from it, he could convert most of Nharkava’s Light Jeweled citizens to his cause. Or so he believes. The problem is, he cannot use this Craft at all. Every attempt to reach out and manipulation someone’s emotions ends in abject failure. It’s as if he’s become so entangled his own feelings and emotions that he cannot make the connection to another to share the emotional strength he needs to impart. He must rely on his arguments and words, both of which are vulnerable to the shouts and threats of the closed-minded.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Kala Sankar, Blood Female d.156
Father: Prafull Sankar, Blood Male d. 188

Teacher: Brigit Rantala - Opal to Red Priestess d. 191

Employer: Gunnar Rantala Rose to Opal Warlord (b. 140 AP)

    Fellow Charges Under Gunnar Rantala:

Arash Garai - Tiger Eye to Rose Warlord (b. 162)
Jayesh Garai - White to Yellow Warlord (b.167)
Kiyara Suresh - Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Witch (b. 161)
Nitya Bhatterjee -Yellow to Rose Healer (b. 163)

    History:

Prafull and Kala Sankar were childhood friends who always knew that they would end up married. Their friendship quietly grew into a deep, abiding love that bound them together through the loss of three children while helping them to build their small farm. The pair had all but given up on having a child of their own, deciding that they were going to adopt, when Kala fell ill once more at Winsol. Learning that she was with child, Kala did not tell her husband for a full three months to spare him the pain of loss. Eventually, she could not keep her secret any longer and the overjoyed parents welcomed Amir into the world, rejoicing that he’d survived where their other children did not.

Amir’s parents indulged him early on, answering his questions and generally allowing the young Prince free reign over the household. Amir questioned everything down to the smallest detail, sometimes to his parents’ exasperation. They knew him as a Prince even before his psychic scent confirmed it. Prafull traded with other people in their village for books to read to his son and often posed riddles and brain-teasers to Amir in order to make him think his way through problems. The relationship between father and son remained warm and cordial for many years. Even today, Amir still thinks fondly of his father and treats Blood males and females with the respect that he’d treat one of the Jeweled.

Amir’s mother was distant but cordial. The loss of her children prior to Amir’s birth damaged something inside of her. The pair never formed a real connection, leaving Amir feeling like an outsider in his own family. His parents didn’t any children after him and Amir felt responsible. Did his mother know he was flawed? Did it push her away from him? Amir questions himself regularly on the nights he can’t sleep.

When he received the White at his Birthright Ceremony, Amir studied his new jewel for a full day before his first attempt to draw upon its power. But his gift from Mother Night further outlined his differences from his Jewelless parents. His father wanted him to be a farmer, but Amir had greater dreams of attending the university and seeing the rest of Kaeleer. His history books painted the wider world as better and more enlightened than Nharkava; Amir longed to enjoy Dhemlanese food and feel the salt-touched winds of Scelt in his hair. Growing older, the young Prince apprenticed to a historian in a nearby village Court and offered his services a a guide to visitors from different Territories.

Amir was sixteen when he met Brigit Rantala, a Red Jeweled Priestess from the land of Glacia. He was her guide through the jungle to the village Court where he served and hoped to someday become the local historian. It was from Brigit that Amir first learned, unwittingly, of the Dark Religion. The Priestess was initially cold and distant toward him, but over time she shared more about her homeland and invited Amir to do the same. Soon, the young man was spending the bulk of his free time with the Glacian woman and her brother, Gunnar, who hoped to bring enlightenment to the people of this exotic land.

By the time he turned twenty, ready for his Offering, Amir was glad that the Glacians had come to Nharkava. For once, it seemed, his people would finally learn what was needed in order to make their land a true power in Kaeleer.

Amir received the Tiger Eye at his Offering ceremony, fully understanding that his soul was fundamentally flawed. Where he’d once have refuted this knowledge with an emotional outburst, Amir was now capable of looking at the estrangement from his mother, the low station of his family, and many of Nharkava’s issues with the proper focus. Someday, Nharkavans might be capable of ruling themselves, with the Dark Jeweled among them taking positions of leadership. Right now, though, many of his people simply don’t have the foresight or clarity of thought to make the right decisions.

Glacia was doing them a favor by sending advisors and Priestesses to help govern the Territory and take some of those burdens from their overtaxed leaders. Amir disapproves of the rebellious factions in Nharkava, like the Friends of Rose Neela and the Rebellion. Neither group accomplishes anything other than drawing down the wrath of their protectors on the heads of those who don’t deserve it.

His closeness to Lady Rantala allowed him to observe her connection to Mother Night and the Darkness. When she performed a Communion ritual for him, it was the first time that he truly felt Mother Night gaze upon him with something other than disdain. He could be a better man in this life in preparation to be a great man in his next...but only if he made the necessary sacrifices to unburden his soul. The sense of belonging, of being loved, was so profound that Amir cried in Brigit’s arms afterward, his soul heavy but clean for the first time in his life.

That day awoke a fierce hunger to become a Priest and confer these same blessings to his own people who felt lost, disconnected, and ashamed. The Dark Religion, however, abhors males learning female castes and this has a been a secret wound in his soul for several years. Instead of giving up, Amir devoted himself to the Dark Religion and its tenets, hoping that his good works and devotion will prepare enrich his people while preparing him to return to Mother Night someday and be reborn as someone who can confer Mother Night’s blessing to others.

Recently, Amir returned to Brigit’s home to find Lord Gunnar packing furiously and Lady Brigit nowhere in sight. When Amir asked him what was happening, the Warlord could only babble something about Lady Brenden and that “everything went horribly wrong” and that “she was just supposed to walk away”. When he asked about Brigit, the Opal Warlord broke down and told him that the entire Territory Court was decimated after trying blackmail the Queen of Glacia. Horrified, Amir asked him what happened to his sister.

She’s dead, Amir. We have to leave now, before Elisif’s lapdogs find us.

Amir didn’t understand. Gunnar instructed the others they'd converted over the years (with Amir's help) to pack everything for their departure. The man turned his back to Amir, detailing just how they’d escape Nharkava and head elsewhere to make their lives, away from the shadow of the Dark Religion. He promised them freedom.

Amir picked up a paperweight and smashed it over Gunnar’s head. It pained him to hurt the brother of the woman who’d mentored him, but Amir’s resolve was steadfast. The Dark Religion was the truth and his truth, above all else. Lady Rantala saved him from ignorance and failure. He told the others to stop what they were doing help him secure Lord Rantala.

Lord Rantala would be judged turned over to the property authority for judgment and aid.

Amir would carry on Lady Rantala’s vision of educating his people in the Dark Religion.

    Character in Play:

Amir opened the door to the Rantala estate and found himself in a madhouse.

Arasha and Jayesh were stacking Lady Brigit’s oak chests near the door, a task that required the formidable strength of both men. Lord Gunnar always complained any time that he was conscripted to help move the heavy chests, so it made sense that he’d demand Arash and Jayesh do it. What did not make sense, to Amir, was the sight of Nitya and Kiyara removing the paintings and pictures from the walls. He heard Lord Gunnar’s voice in the study, so Amir moved further into the house to find out the meaning of this madness. The other spared him brief glances and quickly looked away when Amir noticed.

    Odd, but not unusual.

He found Lord Gunnar sweeping several valuable items from Brigit’s desk.

Lord Gunnar. Lady Brigit doesn’t like it when we touch her things.” Amir said. He’d known that since he was a boy, so Gunnar had to have known it even longer. Gunnar stopped and turned to look at Amir, his eyes red and puffy. He narrowed those eyes at Amir, then turned back to his task.

We need to go before they find us. If they find us, we’re dead.” Gunnar said.

With all due respect, Lord Gunnar, Lady Brigit didn’t inform me that we were leaving.” Amir said, watching the Dark Jeweled male before him. He and Gunnar had always been civil, but Amir had always shown respect and deference toward the Warlord because of his standing in the Abyss and his relationship to the woman that Amir loved like an older sister and more besides.

We are leaving, Amir. Everything’s gone off the rails. We have to leave before Elisif Brenden’s lapdogs find us. We can't stay here!” Gunnar snarled, pushing aside papers on the desk.

Where the hell is it?!”Gunnar spat, using Craft to push everything off the table.

When will Lady Brigit arrive? She usually asks me to look into these things for her if we’re headed to another District or Province.” Amir said.

We’re leaving Nharkava, Amir! It’s the only way that all of you will be free!” Gunnar said, marching directly up to the younger Prince. Up close, Amir could see that he’d been crying, could feel the grief rolling off of him in waves. There was no way for Gunnar to feel like this unless…

Where is Lady Brigit?” Amir demanded.

She’s dead, boy. She’s gone. I told her not to go. I told her to stay away from the Territory Court today but you know her. She never listens. She always has to have her say. I told her not to go. Brenden and her Ebon Grays...they...they killed everyone. Everyone. I told her not to go.” he said, looking up into Amir’s eyes.

They just want freedom. I understand that, but she couldn’t. She said they couldn’t be free without the Dark Religion. But that’s over now, Amir. You don’t have to follow her anymore. You can go anywhere you want. You’re free now.” Gunnar said, patting him on the shoulder.

The air felt ripped from Amir’s lungs. Lady Rantala was dead. He took a step back from the older man, trying to catch his breath. Gunnar’s expression softened and the tears came again while Amir tried to make sense of everything. Lady Rantala was gone and Lord Gunnar was running from something.

I told her not to go. Everything went off the rails.

Gunnar had turned back to the desk, still searching Lady Brigit’s belongings. Her things, things that she didn’t want touched, even by him. He’s hiding something from me, Amir. I can feel it. Gunnar has never heard Mother Night’s call as strongly as us, my love. He doesn't hear Her the way you do. No one does. His faith is not as strong as yours.

She’s dead...I told her not to go.

He’s hiding something from me, Amir.

Amir grabbed the paperweight from the bookcase and smashed it into the back of Gunnar’s skull. The Warlord dropped like a sack of flour and Amir stood over him. For a long moment, he considered killing him. Killing him now would be easy. Too easy.

    But it wasn’t his place.

He knelt down and took Gunnar’s jewels.

You are wrong, Lord Rantala. You always have been. I don’t need to be liberated.

    I'm already free.
