Personality

Personality:

Fate grew up as a caring and sweet child, with a bubbling personality that attracted many to her side. She fell into the role of a leader with ease, able to soothe and fawn attention on individuals when she knew they needed it. Some might consider this a bit manipulative, as she read their emotions, decided what they needed, and used that to draw them closer, but it was more of a protective mechanism. She needed a family and so did the children in the orphanage.

As she grew up, this subtle manipulation, the ability to read people and change her personality to suit them, grew stronger. When a young male looked at her with lust, she flirted. When a grandmother smiled at her, she demurred and conjured a flower for the woman. She is a chameleon of faces based on who she is talking too, but underneath, where the true Fate lies is a fiercely protective individual. A deadly one for a healer. If someone was to mess with those she considers hers, the Healer will do everything in her power to destroy them. Not just physically, but emotionally, draining them of everything they love.

While in the mines, the Healer had a chance to meet her darkest self. A self that might consider hurting others to benefit herself, especially with her newfound Craft. Ultimately though, she rejected this. She can't justify hurting others, even animals, if it is not the most dire circumstances. Everyone deserves a right to life and she does not want to be the one to jeopardize the fire that drives people. This is whys he fears her power getting out of control. If she was ever able to work her Craft on people, stripping them of their will, she would never forgive herself.

Likes:
  • 1 Animals - This might seem paradoxical, since she has spent most of her life controlling them to capture and eat, but she loves animals. It hurts her to limit their movements, take away their will, especially when she feels their fear when she does it. That is why Fate comforts her guilty conscience by having animals all over her house as she takes care of them and makes sure they have a good home.
  • 2 Stealing - Fate got a wicked joy from stealing, especially from those that have a Clan. She is jealous of them. They have a family. Friends. Income. They have it so easy and it was all because of how they were born.
  • 3 The Rain - Fate has only seen it once in her life, but it lasted for seven days and nights. She danced in it, sang with her foster siblings, and laid down on the roof, letting the water pour down on her. It is among her most cherished memories and she hopes to one day see it again.
Dislikes:
  • 1 the traditional clans - Fate views all clans but the al-Izar as traditional. Following their precious Trials and traditions, leaving those born in Onn to starve. Only the al-Izar opened their arms to her and her foster siblings. That is what a true Clan is.
  • 2 Traveling - She has stayed in Onn her entire life, minus her stint in the mines. The traveling culture of the Clans seems foreign to her and it scares the Healer to go to these new places that she does not know.
  • 3 The deep desert - Fate has never seen the deep desert and she never wants to. It terrifies her. She couldn't use Craft. She couldn't protect her family. She would be a sitting duck.
Fears:
  • 1 Losing her foster family - She already lost so many of the siblings she grew up with to the mines and she is terrified of losing more. She feels it is her responsibility to protect the rest as they have elected her de-facto leader of their small band.
  • 2 Succumbing to darker urges - It feels good to control things, even small things like mice and lizards. She likes the power and Fate fears that one day she might like it too much, letting herself relish in that feeling of complete control--control she never had in the mines--a little too much. She does not want to become as bad as the Geiba and her strange Craft reminds her of her former tormentors.
  • 3 Failing the al-Izar - The al-Izar took them in when they had nothing. They did not have to. They did not need to, but they did. She looks at them not only as saviors of Pruul, but as saviors of her entire family. They are a blessing and she strives to benefit their newly forming family.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Animal Delving - This is a rare form of Craft that Fate developed in the mines. It digs into animals bodies and targets the systems that mainly control their movement: nerves, the spinal cord, brain tissue, even individual veins. As a healer, she can control blood vessels, fluids in the body, and can constrict and enlarge muscles within the animals. She uses those skills combined with  cutting off circulation, destroying nerves, or altering their connections in order to influence the animal’s movements. It is extremely complex Craft that she has been working on for 9 years at this point. To date, she has never controlled anything larger than a horse and human bodies are far too complex to perform this craft on. (This Craft skill is taken from the Pruul Territory petition, under "Healers," approved by HBC)
  • 2 Bone Shaping - This Craft compliments the animal delving Fate does by allowing her to lengthen or shorten limbs, trigger the regrowth of teeth or missing bone fragments and change the structure and shape of existing bones.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Curing disease - Fate received basic instruction in her Healer's caste at the orphanage, but she never took to it. She was much to worried about mending wounds that her siblings incurred while they were playing. Once, when she tried to cure a disease right before she was forced into the Mines, it actually made the disease worse, nearly killing the male right then and there. Since then, she has never tried it again.
  • 2 Healing tonics - Fate never could make healing tonics that worked properly. Worked, sure, but properly? No. Sometimes a tonic that was supposed to cure a fever would actually make her patients break out in small blotchy spots. She shudders to think if she ever attempted to make a contraceptive brew what would be the results, so she stays away from failing at this Craft, so no one is hurt.

    History:

Fate grew up in Onn. There was a small orphanage there that tended to those that were forgotten and unwanted. She thrived there, her infectious personality causing the other children to laugh, even when they were down. She grew to love many of her “siblings” in  the orphanage and she planned to use her Healing to cobble together a home for them when she reached her majority. Sadly, that never happened, because the orphanage was a feeder for free labor in the salt mines. Unknown to the children, the Geiba ran the orphanage and when the children were old enough, they were sent to work in the Mines, never heard of again.

When Fate turned 18, her and two of her brothers, Haddy and Jakob, were consigned to such a fate. They thought they were going to receive their Offerings, but instead they were shepherded into the darkness. They survived by having each other, each watching the others back. It was hard on them all, even for the small Healer who bore a caste that normally stopped people from preying on her. To try and combat them, Fate began to practice a peculiar type of craft. It filtered through the body, through the veins, controlling them like a puppet. The Healer practiced on rats at first. She focused on their nerves, the fibers in their ligaments, the circuits in their tiny brains—until she could control them. She could not fully develop it in the mines, as her Jewel was taken. Additionally, to her disappointment,  it was too hard of a Craft to use on Blood, as their bodies were too complex…for now. So, she focused on catching rats for them to eat whenever she could and surviving.

While she was down in the darkness she met a strange Priestess. A child. Far too young to be working down in the mines. She gave the small thing a piece of rat once and tried to talk to her, but she scampered off, never to be seen again. When they were freed from the mines, Fate tried to find the other children that had been sent to the mines from the orphanage, but most of them had perished. She gathered together the ones that had survived and they wound up on the streets of Onn for the next few years. They made ends meet through stealing and odd jobs.

All the while Fate practiced her strange new Craft. With the help of her Jewel, she focused on bigger animals. First cats, then dogs, and finally a horse over the next seven years. The Craft became as easy as breathing, slipping into an animal’s body, finding the nerves and circuits that made them tick. It came in handy when she stole horses and searched for food for her small group.

When the Rains came, saving them from dehydration and sure starvation, Fate saw the miracle with her own eyes. She saw the strange child she had seen in the mines rise into the air with her siblings. The Healer thought it was fate that they had been brought back together and she searched for the one called the Mineborn Priestess soon after the miracle.

It took weeks to make contact, but eventually she managed to touch her as she walked by with her guards. Once their eyes made contact, Hadjara let her through and they spoke for the first time. Slowly, the two became friends and the al-Izar gave her small family a place to call their own.

    Character in Play:

Fate looked up at the birds that flew overhead. They were cactus wrens, soft, beautiful. She watched them feed on the spiked fruit of the cactus often, drawing their small beaks in her notebook. She loved the way their bellies stuck out, almost like their entire body was a balloon. It would be nesting season soon and the wrens would find each other, their feathers combining as they made families.

But not these wrens. No. These wrens were needed by her family.

Fate sighed and reached for her Purple Dusk, delving into the small birds with ease. The blood rushed through their tiny brains, fast and hard, as their hearts pounded. She could feel it all, like it was her own body. Quickly, the Healer delved deeper, to the brain, small nerve endings sending signals to flap flap flap their small wings. Fate paused, watching the beauty of the animal’s body. The effortless way the brain sent signals to the wings and the wings responded. It was a true marvel, a sign that Mother Night had crafted her creatures well.

And then, without delay, Fate squeezed the veins that carried blood to the wren’s heart. Squeezed and then released. Squeezed and then released. The bird became dazed and went to the ground to get its bearings. Once there, Fate withered those beautiful nerves that carried the brains orders to its wings. She watched the bird stand there then, unable to move its wings, just before Haddy nabbed it and stuck it into his bag for dinner.  She could have gone into the bird’s brain, firing the animal’s neurons against its will, but she did not want too. Not today.

They did this for a while, one after the other, until Fate saw one wren as it stood there, its small eyes looking around until they locked with hers. The bird and Fate stared at each other then and the Healer regrew the nerves for the small creature, its wings flaring out and taking flight just as Haddy was about to grab it.

“Oy, Fate. Come on. We could have used that one.” He complained.

“It’s okay. I think we have enough. Let that one go.”

Maybe she would find a mate. Maybe she would build a nest and start a family.
