Appearance

Play By:Madelaine Petsch
Distinguishing Features: Alis is of average height and slender. She has naturally curly red hair, green eyes, and a smile that can be seen miles away...if she cares to show it to you. She usually has dirt under her fingernails and scraped knees, but when the need arises she cleans up well. She has a large birthmark on her right shoulder in the vague shape of a shooting star, and has taken that symbol and gone with it. She almost always wears something with a star on it, whether it be a bracelet with star and moon charms, or star-shaped earing, or dresses embroidered with starbursts.

Personality

Personality:

Alis is loud, unapologetic, proud and confident. She balks at anyone holding her back from what she wants to do and believes in, and isn’t afraid to show her teeth when challenged. This isn’t to say she doesn’t listen to advice, it just has to be given when she is not rushing head-long into something she cares about. Alis’s fondness for music burst out of her often. She sings, hums, dances, taps her feet in rhythm and generally lives her life to her own, unique beat. It’s not always in tune, but she doesn’t care.

If asked, she could not tell you if she loves the sea or the land more, and if pressed further, she would tell you that to her, they are basically the same thing. She delights in long rides along the coast, climbing trees and counting stars at night with the smell of gorse and heather in the air. She equally adores walking in the surf, breathing in the brisk salt air off the sea and, when the temperature is warm enough that her escorts don’t growl, swimming until her skin is wrinkled and her teeth chattering.

Alis’s carefree, exuberant nature would lead one to believe that studies and paperwork would drive her mad, and that is true. The only way she is happy with her head in a book is if the book is outside, and preferably being read to her while she digs in the dirt or makes flower chains. Even then, she would most likely wander off halfway through her lesson, drawn away by the call of wind and sea and wide open fields waiting to be explored.

As she has grown, and particularly with the death of her father, her carefree nature has been tempered by the drive and hairline temper of a Sapphire Jeweled Queen. She wants to do something with her life, her Caste’s need to serve the people and the land driving her, she just doesn’t know how, having always assumed her father would tell her! She has learned much from her time studying under Blodwen, and very much looks up to her, wanting to be the sort of Queen her mentor is.

Likes:
  • Scelt: She is a Queen, and she adores it. She loves feeling the heartbeat of the land, and loves that she can use her Caste as an excuse to spend hours and hours outside every day. Whenever she can, she likes exploring the countryside, finding great joy in every stream, every gnarled tree and stepping stone. She loves the people of Scelt too. They are proud, sturdy and determined, just like the land in which they live.
  • Music: Alis lives life to the beat of song. She plays several instruments, including the flute and harp, and knows how to dance well, although she prefers the fast paced country dances to anything she has to learn for important functions. She sings a lot, not really caring if people hear, and almost never does not have a song or melody stuck in her head.
  • Kester: Her little brother (even though he is not technically related to her in any way) is her favorite partner in crime. The eight-year-old Warlord Prince is just as brash and bold as Alis, and she loves making trouble with him.

    Dislikes:
  • Being Indoors: Even during a storm when being outside would be nothing but misery, Alis wants to be. Being indoors feels like being in a cage. Her greatest horror associated with her Caste is that she might one day have to spend hour upon hour stuck in meetings and dealing with business. It sounds like Hell.
  • Boats: For all her love of the sea, Alis gets intensely seasick every single time she gets on a boat. She loves the idea of sailing, but in practice, it doesn’t work out very well. Does this stop her from trying every once in a while? Of course not! She just regrets her life choices every time she does.
  • Dogs: She was bitten by a dog as a child and has never trusted them since. She isn’t exactly afraid of them, and there is the occasional sweet and docile wolfhound that she admits is lovely, but she would never own a dog. Cats are a completely different story though. Cats are wonderful and love to roam and explore as much as Alis. She has several.

    Fears:
  • Clan Killan: Alis’s mother was a Sheane. Alis is terrified that someone is going to remember that, and figure out that since Nolan was never officially granted paternity, Alis’s last name of Clery isn’t technically legal. She is careful not to mention this information to anyone, but is always scared that it will come out anyways.
  • Losing Autonomy: She is a Queen, which means she is going to rule one day, but she is well aware that having a Court means that she is going to have to listen to other people’s opinions and play by the rules. This is not something she is looking forward to.
  • Big Cities: She doesn’t understand the flow of life in them, or how people function with so little open space and greenery. They make her skin crawl, and it always feels like there are eyes watching from the shadows.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Queen’s Gift:Alis loves that she can give back to the land some small part of the joy she gets from it. She has always excelled and worked hard to enhance this side of her Craft, and the results often overgrow her manor’s garden. There was one point when her foster mother forbade her from bleeding on the peas anymore because they were producing more than she cared to harvest.
  • Land Sense:Exploring the countryside is something Alis has always loved. Being able to sense where she is and if there is a hidden treasure waiting just beyond the next hill fills her with joy and wonder. She never set out to be good at this, but with how much she used this type of Craft, a proficiency developed.
    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Mind Craft: She’s not bad at reading people’s emotions with her eyes, but does not have the subtle touch required to affect the mind of others. It just isn’t in her to be anything less than blunt and direct.
  • Shielding: The natural ferocity of a Queen, one from Scelt, no less, makes Alis bold and a little arrogant. She rarely remembers to Shield, and because of that, she has neither developed a good grasp of making them in a hurry or how to hold one for long periods of time.

    History:
Alis does not know how she came to be. It’s the one story that Nolan, her father, never told her. All she knows is that somehow he and her mother, Aileas Sheane, had Alis, and two years later her mother was gone and Nolan walked away from her deathbed with his toddling daughter and deposited her on the doorstep of very distant cousins where the rest of his Clan would be unlikely to find her. Donella and Boyd were the ones who raised Alis, although Nolan never missed a birthday or major holiday, even if business kept him late. Alis grew used to waiting up until past midnight on Winsol, just so she could spend a few precious hours with her daddy.

When Alis was eight, her father showed up for Birthright Ceremony. She skipped out of the Sanctuary with an Uncut Opal Jewel clutched to her chest and a huge smile on her face, crowing that her Birthright was even Darker than her father’s. Nolan was proud and impressed and Alis could not have been happier. She didn’t know, but while he was delighted, it also made his job of keeping her out of the public eye much harder.

An Opal Birthright Queen was not someone who could hide out in the country forever, so Nolan arranged for Alis to begin her studies at the Court of the White Jeweled Queen who ruled the nearby Village. Alis didn’t like the lessons much, or at least the parts that happened indoors, but as long as she got to go play in the countryside in the afternoons and weekends, she was happy enough to learn, especially the parts of Craft that let her better connect with the land, and the bits and pieces of whimsy Craft she could use to pull pranks.

Over the years other Queens and important Blood poked their nose into her Village Court. She was too young to understand how unusual this was, but she was always a bit disconcerted by the interest people had in her, and she would question her father about it often, on his infrequent visits.

As she got older, Nolan’s excuses that business had kept him grew thinner and thinner, until one day when she was nine, she hounded and pestered him on until he admitted to his other family. It was a hard hit, and even though she had asked for it, her relationship with Nolan never recovered from it, especially when he refused to give her their names, and admitted that none of them knew she existed.

Alis might have resented the reasons that brought her to the isolated manor by the sea with her foster family, but she loved her life there. Donella and Boyd had no children, and cared for Alis as if she were their own. Boyd taught her to ride horses and took her out to explore the countryside, teaching the little girl everything he knew about plants and animals and life in Scelt. Donella taught Alis to garden and cook the food they grew, and most wondrous of all, music. Alis loved music!

Nolan had arranged for tutors to come and teach the young Queen outside of what she learned in school and at the Village Court. Alis put up with them when she could not sneak away, but if they turned their backs on the girl for even a single moment, she would be gone, off to play in the long grass or to collect shells by the seashore.

There were few threats in the peaceful little corner of nowhere where she grew up, so she was, to a great extent, allowed to explore unhindered once she was old enough to get up on a horse all by herself. Nolan would often complain that every time he saw her there would be brambles in her hair and dirt under her nails, but no attempts at making her a lady really stuck. She learned manners and Protocol and everything else a Queen should know, but her preference, always, was being outside in the sun and fresh air, enjoying herself.

Not long after her tenth birthday, Donella had a son. The couple had been trying to conceive for a decade or more, and it was as unexpected as it was welcome. They named him Kester, and within a few days of his birth, the Psychic Scent of a Warlord Prince clung to the loudly crying babe. Alis loved him.

As he learned to crawl, then walk, Alis was there to hold his hand just as much as his parents. By the time he was three he already had all the Warlord Prince bossyness down to an art, and was the only one Alis would ever allow to order her about. She taught him how to pull pranks and made him laugh until he cried with her made up stories, and when he was tired, she would let him curl up in her lap and sing to him.

Just after puberty, Alis’s life changed dramatically. Her father came and told her that he had arranged for her to become the ward of Lady Blodwen Lyons, in Tramore. Alis balked, not wanting to leave home, but she was still, after all, a child, and Nolan insisted, promising she could come home for a few months each summer, and for Winsol.

Alis arrived in Tramore full of annoyance and with no hope of liking it, for surely it would be a city and one visit to one of those had made its mark. She was pleasantly surprised with the country manor, full of laughing, happy people. The sheep were less of a good development, at least until she realized how good an audience they were for her singing.

In her time studying with Blodwen, Alis befriended her little sister, also a Queen of around Alis’s age. Carys was Alis’s first real female friend, and being able to learn to be Queens together was a delight. The girls occasionally got in trouble (like the time they dyed a whole herd of sheep all different colors, sticking the dye on with Alis’s Opal Craft), but their studies kept them busy most days.

By the time Alis was blossoming into womanhood, Nolan was getting older. When she saw him, he spoke often now of plans he had and promised Alis that after her Offering, he would tell her everything she wanted to know.

Her lessons grew harder and more serious. She would be an adult soon enough, and with that freedom and power came all the responsibilities that would come from being a Queen ready to form a Court.

When the news came about the bloody fighting between the Sheanes and the Killans was the first time Alis really thought about her mother in years. She had never spent time considering it, having always had the last name Clery, but given that her mother had never officially granted Nolan paternity, having died much too early to do so, meant that legally at least, Alis was, in fact, Sheane. When the news came that the whole Clan had been outlawed and many killed, it left the usually unflappable young Queen in trembling, uncontrollable fear.

She called out to her father on a Psychic thread, begging him to tell her that there was something, anything that was keeping her safe other than the fact that no one currently in her life other than Nolan and Alis herself knew the identity of her mother. Had he officially petitioned for guardianship? Had Donella and Boyd? Was she safe?

No. Nolan had not claimed her because that would have involved telling his other family about her existence. Donella and Boyd had not because Nolan had never asked it of them. Everything in her life had been agreed upon with a handshake over a glass of whiskey and it pissed her off.

She stopped talking to her father, blocked him out of her life. When he visited, she walked right by him and would not acknowledge his existence, going out to ride for hours, but as first months, then years, passed and no one from Clan Killan came looking for her, Alis’s fear started to fade. She decided it might be time to forgive Nolan.

In Blodwen’s Court, Alis visited other Provinces on occasion, getting a chance to meet people from other Clans and Provinces. Her one trip to the capitol reinforced the notion that she wanted nothing to do with the sort of power that would force her away from living, growing things. The big city was so impersonal and dingy, without enough green places. She would gladly take the greasy nausea that overcame her every time Nolan took her out on a boat over having to live her life in a city. No, what she wanted was to take care of the land and the people who lived on it. She wanted a quiet life, but one of hard work and value. With a bit less levity and more drive, Alis underwent her her Virgin Night and prepared to make her Offering and complete her apprenticeship.

Her work and the attention she was getting from other members of Clan Clery and elsewhere kept her from thinking much of her father or his many secrets, and unfortunately, before she could reach out to him once more, he died.

Alis didn’t find out about it until the wake and funeral had passed. She had spent those weeks back home, and when she returned to Court, Blodwen sat her down and told her, and she turned around and went right back home again. She spent that night out under the stars, crying and cursing herself for her pride and anger. She wanted to see him just one more time, tell him that she loved him, but he was gone. Kester found her in the morning with a plate of honey cakes and sat with her, telling her stories and jokes until her smile shone once more, but it took months before the weight of grief began to truly fade.

When time came for her Offering she had recovered as much as she ever would, a little less carefree and a lot more determined to do his memory proud. She entered the sanctuary and the next day sat in silence, a Sapphire Jewel in her hand, cut. She never would speak of it out loud for fear that she would be laughed at, but in that moment and in many that followed, she was so very, very sure that the cut on her new Jewel was exactly the same as that of the one her father had worn.

    Character in Play:

Alis sat on the large rock overlooking the sea, legs dangling off the edge as the sky roiled, gray and smoky. For once she did not long for sunlight, the dreary mood echoing her heart today. She turned the Sapphire pendant over and over in her hands. She had arrived back home after the trip to the jewelers to have her new Jewels set. She had sat with the kindly older woman for hours a week ago, drawing sketch after sketch, trying to remember the exact setting that her father had has his Sapphire in. Alis knew perfectly well that there was no way to know for sure if her Jewels had been the ones that belonged to Nolan, but in her heart she was sure of it. The only alteration she had chosen to make was to turn the chips that had once been cufflinks into starburst earrings, and to add little stars around the bezel of the pendant and ring.

    Her father was dead.

She still didn’t quite believe it, kept expecting a letter from him saying it was all a misunderstanding. Kept expecting a box of sweets to arrive by mail for her, as he had often been prone to doing, but it had been weeks and there was nothing but silence.

Her eyes drifted over the sea, waves crashing against rocks, dark blue-gray water churning and frothing. She always thought of Nolan when she sat by the sea. He had loved boats and waves and the smell of salt in the air as much as Alis loved the feel of dirt under her nails and the crackle of dry leaves underfoot in the fall. She had spent a lot of time overlooking the ocean since his death, even when the wind was so icy it made her eyes water. It wasn’t as if she wasn’t crying half the time anyways.

Sighing, she fixed her eyes on the ocean and crossed her arms. “Damn it, old man. Why did you have to go and die just when I needed you the most?”

She had never worried about her future because Nolan had a plan. Nolan knew what had to be done, what she, as a Dark Jeweled Queen, should be doing. Alis had never considered that when the time came for her Offering, his would not be one of the faces waiting for her at the other side. That night was supposed to have been theirs, to sit and drink and talk about the past and the future. Now her future was as up in the air as the gulls circling above, and nothing in her life had prepared her for that.

    So she sat and waited.

Surely, if the Darkness had granted Alis her father’s Jewels, it must mean that his power -now her power- was still needed. If only she understood how.
