Her singing voice is pleasant, sultry, and easy to understand even when the melody is quite fast.

Personality

Personality:

You have to look out for yourself in this world or no one else will. That’s one of the rare lessons from her father that Ripley heard but didn’t take to heart. It’s one thing to be careful and another to go solo. She grew up with precious few privileges and many disadvantages. She is tough but she isn’t jaded. Life is hard in Little Terreille and all over Kaeleer. People who spend time feeling sorry for their lot are the ones who never change it. She’s quick to laugh and quick to make jokes. A vibrant women and Lady Martin’s choices in fashion and company make that evident. Some people are made sharp by hardship but Ripley is fiercely protective of her softer qualities and tendencies. The strengths she’s honed the witch uses to protect herself as well as those she loves but Ripley’s no Healer, at the end of the day she does her best to put herself first.

Feelings complicate things though, and unlike many Blood, Ripley does a poor job ignoring their call.

However, certain things that are unavoidable when born and raised in the poorest parts of Goth that will make someone’s softness strong. By the time she received her birthright jewel Ripley was, like many other children, running errands for her neighborhood's rival gangs. That pack mentality culture has stuck with her. She feels uncomfortable out on the streets without a crew and seeks out family and support in the strangest places even to her detriment.

The witch is always drawing people around her to form crews. She likes to have a gang to roll with whatever it is she’s doing even if not the Goth traditional sense of a gang. What it is is that Ripley likes being part of a team. Being alone for too long makes her nervous. At her core she’s social thing well suited to her career as an entertainer.  Unfortunately, she has a bad habit of picking the wrong kind of people. Lady Martin has a tendency to develop blind spots for people of questionable character due to their potential for good.

Because of this the witch has been abandoned or hurt enough times that she has issues trusting even those she loves. This lack of trust doesn’t make her care about those questionable individuals less she just forgives a lot from those who grew up like her. It isn’t easy to shake the urge to look out for yourself and yourself alone.

While many grow up in Goth to learn that forgiveness is the quickest way to get yourself burnt Lady Martin has a difficult time pushing people, even ones who have proven themselves toxic, out of her life. Her fear of being alone is great enough that she worries any person turned away is another person who won’t be there for her when things get rough. In Little Terreille things never stay smooth for long. Besides, enough people walk away on their own without being told to go. She’s used to making a lot of happy out of nothing pretty. The art of spin is one Ripley wields well.

What she lacks in means she makes up for with innovative cheap, illegal (or both), solutions to her problems. Though she isn’t eloquent, or usually the smartest in a plot Lady Martin is quite charming, the witch has a tendency to lean into improvisation than traditional planning. She stopped going to school as soon as she was old enough that the Territory would no longer provide lessons. When she did attend Ripley was known for skipping classes and always being around but rarely being the one directly in trouble. It isn’t that Ripley lacks the classical markings of intelligence so much that her mind excels with and through motion. What would’ve made her a poor fit in academia makes her a survivor on cutthroat streets.

She always preferred sports and recess to indoor activities and her preference for movement to study helped her find the path she’s on. Ripley is a singer and a dancer in one of Goth’s most popular Gentleman’s Clubs, Gilded Lily’s. The clientele are a mix of well to do criminals and legitimate businessmen, even politicians, who understand that certain lines sometimes need to be crossed or blurred in order to get things done.

It’s not her only gig, or even the one that pays most of her bills but it’s where she makes some of her best connections. Performance isn’t a passion for Ripley so much as it is something she’s good at that she didn’t have to pay anyone else to teach her to do.  Her numbers on stage are more about charisma, flair, humor and sex than they are technique.  Technique is for the ballet. Entertainment? That’s for Lily’s and that’s what Ripley’s about when she’s in the spotlight.

What Ripley considers her real calling and vocation is the business of turning some into more and more into a lot. Some money is always one smart turn away from becoming a lot of money. Unfortunately, because she got involved in the outer rings of Goth’s gang economy from such a young age, most of the big scores Ripley’s managed have landed in the pockets of others. Ripley gets a cut but the witch wants more.

She’s known on the streets as a woman who can hook you up with who or what you need.  Her sphere of influence, when it comes to matters of the street, is quite wide.  Ripley is a people person and it’s a skill she uses to keep a large circle of friends as well as turning profit. Her passion for flare and her tendency to go for the laugh often make people underestimate her and that tendency is one Ripley is adept at exploiting.

On the occasions her duplicity is spotted Ripley often manages to spin situations in such a way that most parties end up mollified if not satisfied.  When her street honed wits fail her the witch who is well connected in (mostly) all the right wrong circles is rarely far from an ally to help her out of a bind. Need something or someone?

Ripley Martin can be your girl for a price and she’s on four nights a week at Gilded Lily’s.

Likes:
  • Fighting and Fight culture/tournaments. The Blood often believe that fighting is the domain of the male arts solely. To them Ripley curtly points out that tradition is fine as fuck until that tradition leaves you hungry cause you got knocked out while everyone was fighting for scraps. When she was a girl sometimes throwing a good punch or knowing just where to jab her elbow was the only thing that let her get a meal or escape the pursuit of unsavory characters. When she was a girl Ripley learned to fight as a matter of survival. Now as a woman grown but still living in Little Terreille’s slums Ripley keeps those skills honed to keep fit and sharp. The world is just as dangerous for a woman grown as a girl finding her way, the shape of the troubles just change.

Ripley enjoys it enough that it is part of her regular fitness routine, a necessity when singing, dancing and flirting all at the same time is her job. She can't get involved in any competitive fighting, only sparring with trustworthy partners, because of her job. However Ripley often enjoys her free time at boxing matches and the like.

  • Her Neighborhood and Goth in general. Troubled though the streets she calls home may be, Ripley loves the city that raised her. Goth isn’t all crime and strife. Is there a lot of it? Yes, but what Goth lacks in security it makes up for with variety like no other place in the world. Ripley loves all the small ethnic neighborhoods that pepper the streets and alleyways of Goth’s less marketable sections. What she lacks in formal knowledge of history she makes up for with a varied knowledge of different customs from all across Kaeleer and even some lore about Terreille. There’s always something to do, something to see, taste or learn. Ripley was raised by those streets and she considers that to be a blessing and only laughs when others offer pity at the knowledge.

  • Gossip. When you’re one of the People to Know in Goth’s less refined sectors, you have to keep an ear to the ground. Powers come as quick as they go and Lord Black’s takeover has been a sharp reminder of that to Ripley. However, she knows when to listen and how to get people talking because it’s always been fun for her. Being an orphan, and a runaway by choice, Ripley still craved adult interaction and advice. She learned first how to get shop keepers chatting just enough so she could snatch an extra apple. Eventually Ripley was getting meals, odd jobs, and help finding places to sleep all because people liked her. It feels good to be looked out for, admired, and to be everyone’s confidant. There’s a special feeling Ripley gets from knowing things other people don’t that thrills her and it’s that thrill that keeps her discrete with people’s secrets. No one tells a blabbermouth anything.

    Dislikes:
  • Aristos. Some people, even at their nicest, are stuck up and awful. There’s a classism inherent to people born into certain parts of society that no amount of education can rub off.  She takes note of people who look down their nose at her and it affects how close they can get to her. Because Ripley has a hard time kicking people out of her life she makes it difficult for many to get really close.

Not that she’s ever had much of a chance to rub elbows with that kind of money on the regular but if she did? It would be quite some time before Ripley could develop any kind of trust with that sort of person. Some people are just different and old money? Old money has a way of turning people mean. Ripley’s seen enough careless cruelty from the extremely wealthy to know better. Plenty of pretty girls get caught up in the affairs of the rich and well off for a time only to be discarded, often worse off than they started, back where they were found. Old money doesn’t marry street, it just plays in them for a while.

  • Flings. Ripley is proud of the fact that life hasn’t made her heart hard. It could’ve but throughout her hardships she’s always seen or been the recipient of enough kindness to remain hopeful. She’s positive and self-possessed but also a romantic. Those are qualities that don’t mesh well with many of the relationships that take place in the circles she runs in. Love is for people who don’t have to worry about getting and staying fed.

When she was younger Ripley tried to occupy her free time with casual dating and one night stands but these trysts always left her feeling hurt. People leaving never gets easy and romantic flings are just people getting comfortable in your warmth and taking off without leaving anything in return. For all her wild flirting, of which there quite a lot of in her jobs, Ripley’s bed belongs to her alone.

  • Religion. Prayer didn’t save her mother, being a devotee of the Priestesses’ words and dragging her to the altar at least once a week for blessings and donations didn’t spare her father from The Gatekeepers’s greed. While she can’t shut people out for wronging her, she can forgive the world’s denizens for being flawed and fucked up. Those two things are quite big part’s of her wheelhouse but what she can’t forgive is a Mother that would have so much power and do nothing to save the children left forgotten. Either the Darkness is cruel and the Mother Doesn’t Give a Shit or power is power. Either way Ripley has little time for Priestesses who don’t respect her abstaining from the faith and she hasn’t been to an altar since she made a full descent in spite of her disdain for the supposed power responsible for her success.

    Fears:

  • Being Alone. The world is no place to be without friends. People who forsake allies are people who don’t do well in Little T. Only a very few make it and it seems like a lonely existence. Ripley spent her earliest years wanting for comfort and security at a time in her life she really should’ve had it. She’s grown now and things are different but Ripley still can’t fully shake the anxiety being alone gives her.

Normally, she avoids it. The witch’s work keeps her busy and around people. She shares her home with a dancer she befriended in her early years at Lily’s. Most night’s Ripley is alone in her bed, but her roommate likes to entertain and Ripley falls asleep best listening to the soft hum of people going about their lives. For this same reason she prefers apartments to houses and in general tries to be friendly with all her neighbors. It’s not just her social nature, Ripley just never feels safe alone. The few times she’s been out of the city and in to the country the fear wasn’t present but it became a strange, manic sort of loneliness she didn’t like much more.

  • The New Court. In the last decade Goth has seen much upheaval but nothing quite like Lord Black and his Queen Lady Tiernan. Everyone is scared and fear often makes people stupid and greedy. Ripley’s seen more fights break out in recent weeks than ever before in her time at Gilded Lily’s. Drunk, happy, vaguely horny men can turn cold in a blink. Accidents happen and dancer’s can too often be casualties. She’s not scared enough to stop her work, but she’s enjoying herself less in recent times.

Her fear continues because no one who takes power in such a messy way can really care about the little guy. Ripley is pretty sure they don’t give a damn about the chaos emerging from the power vacuum left in the Hell Lords wake. It makes her as angry as it makes her scared.

  • Not Having a Family. While Ripley’s career is far from conventional, she is at heart a woman of simple desires. She likes comfort, security, and having a house full of people she cares about. For now it’s nice enough to live with some of the girls she works with. However, Ripley would really like to marry and have a family one day. She also knows that would mean giving up her lifestyle and without it, Ripley has no means of providing for a family. Rich men saving girls from Goth’s less savory sectors are always fairytales or cons. She’s helped nurse together more than a few broken hearts after rich patrons at Lily’s tired of their tawdry affair and went back to their debutantes. Ripley knows better than to date any kind of customer but especially not the rich ones.

Meeting people in her line of work is easy if the goal is to find buyers for substances frowned upon by the district Queen. Meeting people in her line of work who want to settle down into an honest life with a family, and who really mean it? That’s another story altogether but the short of it is that, so far? The witch’s dating life has been more comedic tragedy than romance. While Ripley is aware she has plenty of time to start a family, the world isn’t a fair place and plenty of wonderful people never find their person. She’s further fearful of her ability to run a household and be a good mother as she largely lacked for good examples in the subject growing up.
     Craft Strengths:

  • Physical Enhancement.  This bit of craft is straight up handy and it comes naturally to most Blood without a lot of teaching. Since Ripley hasn’t had a lot of teaching, she’s gotten quite good with this bit of craft. Time, experiencing, and the performing arts have given her significant finesse and control with the talent. She uses her jewels with expert efficacy when doing this type of craft.

Ripley uses this ability to best effect in a fight, during shows, or any type of physical activity. It’s not through her, but around her. Ripley best works with her body as a focus for her power not a medium through which it’s delivered. Using her skill in this particular way has given the witch a great ability to leverage her environment and create environment when she needs it.

More than once when being pursued Ripley has taken to the Rooftops of Little Terreille where she is able to leap and run across great distances using her Rose and Opal jewels to create the superhuman strength or agility she needs to “step,” from, or help her extend her grip.  (note: this is not “airwalking,” per Jaenelle’s invention in the books. Instead it is more advanced parkour/gymnastic ability because she can use her craft to give her the leverage/momentum she needs. It is as useful in her career as an entertainer as it is to getting away from dangerous elements as a person not particularly adept at any cloaking craft.)

  • Social Craft. While her gift with Telekenesis is a honed talent this art came naturally to Ripley. From an early age she discovered the benefits to being liked. Much of craft is will and the girl has just always wanted to not just belong but be wanted. There is security in the desire of others. While wanting the approval of her loved ones can be a problem for Ripley, her will to be loved was one of the first things to stir magic within her after she got her Rose Birthright jewel.

The pathways of the art are familiar and she’s particularly skilled with enhancing herself, her features, and even her psychic scent to be more appealing or better convey the emotions she’s seeking to convey, true or not.

In Ripley’s line of work it’s important to sell the illusion of desire and her talent for these subtle, tricky manipulations make her quite good at her job. It takes a special sort of finesse to be trusted while dealing with information trading as a source of income and it helps with the dancing too.

Due to a particularly large gap in craft ability with a skill set that would be very valuable in her trade, Ripley has also honed the areas of social craft which focus on reading the psychic, physiological, and body language tells associated with lying. Since everyone lies it’s not as helpful as it could be but in her line of work it at least gives her a place to start. At the very least what someone lies about and when they do it says a lot about them.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • Sight Shields and Trail Masking .  For all her skill manipulating her essence even at the psychic level the same deep wants and insecurities that make Ripley so excellent at social craft make her terrible at craft that revolves around not being noticed. Some of her worst nightmares are dreams where she is in a room full of friends and loved ones and no one sees her or talks to her. This deeply rooted fear is a psychic block that makes this magic at its best unpredictable and always below the strength of her Jewel of Rank. Part of the reason the witch has learned to fight as well as she has is because if she runs, and her attacker is persistent, they can find her.

Unfortunately in recent years her Opal jewel of rank isn’t as reliable in its chances to be the darkest power in a fight. Queens like the Marchalan’s, Logain’s fuckery, and now Lord Black’s indomitable regime made sure of that. It’s not an accident that Ripley tries to keep a friend or five in every neighborhood she frequents. It’s good to have friends when you’re a woman to know when it’s not always exactly safe to be known.

  • Mind Delving. While overall detection of falsehood for Ripley is covered by her skill with Social Craft, the witch is not very skilled with the craft that would allow her to determine the nature of lies and the truth of matters.

This particular failing complicates her work as a woman who trades in information. This is part of the reason Lady Martin is exclusive in her trading. Exclusivity is also good for business. Instead of relying on tricks of craft to uncover the falsehoods in her dealings because there’s always something to suss out because everyone lies Ripley checks and doubler checks her sources. When it comes to this craft the witch never can pass undetected and that’s a problem for many reasons. Furthermore, she’s just not good at it. It’s easy for even a minor talent with psychic shielding to hide some, of not all, important data from her.

This is a lesson Ripley learned the hard way and why she relies on investigation and her own network of sources to get the snippets of life she turns for a profit instead of fancier tricks that would be much easier. Martin wouldn’t bother but the marks are good and the work, dangerous or not, is fun.

They trained her to pan handle and bring then the profits and to eventually pick pocket while she did it. It was while learning to do the latter that Ripley discovered her knack for telekenetic manipulation and control.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Marina Martin.  Blood Female. Deceased. 168 AP.
Father:  Percy Hart. Blood Male.  Deceased. Gang related violence 172 AP.

    History:

Marina Martin died in 168 AP. The family picked poorly in the Healer that was hired to tend to what seemed like a common fever but was in reality something more sinister that turned deadly too quickly for another more reputably trained witch a chance to cure her. Percy fell four years later when the strain of trying, and mostly succeeding, in raising his daughter well lead to him turning to an unsavory sort for a loan and soon being made an example of.

At Twelve, Ripley was left an orphan. Both of her parents had immigrated, her Mother from Terreille and her father from Nharkava, under circumstances that left them all with no family but each other. By thirteen the young witch of Rose descent was fed up with the life in the corrupt orphanage into which she’d passed by default when no guardian came forward.

Though she wore the Rose as her birthright, a jewel with more promise than many could even hope to get upon their descent, Ripley was an older girl whose father was known to have fallen on the wrong side of The Gatekeepers.  No one wanted to bring that kind of trouble into their new life and family. By thirteen she tired of the life of a girl with a tarnished reputation in a home full of secrets, misappropriated funds, and never quite enough to go around.

Like many in her situation do, Ripley ran away determined to make a better life for herself. Mostly, she did, but not before getting involved with the same gang that saw her father ended for a minor debt. It had been their design all along to get a girl of Rose birthright and possible Dark descent under their control. They’d hoped she’d run away and saw to some of the circumstances in her orphanage that saw her flight in the early morning hours one stifling summer day.

As a girl she met Roland Cade and, when not pressed by gang business or under the too-watchful eye of the Gatekeepers, they were friends. The youthful bond was short lived as Roland’s caste, jewel and timing saw him taken in by the right kind of people.  When Ripley got out it was through bargaining, hustle, and making friends with those who held leverage over the people who had her chained.

It wasn’t until she made her offering a bit early, at nineteen, that Ripley had the skills, confidence and connections needed to extricate herself from the direct control and “employ,” of the Gatekeepers. By then she was already dancing to earn extra money and she’d gotten into the business of trading secrets for friends, favors and money the first time she heard one of the keepers who liked to smack her and the kids like her around talking out of turn. In her first trade she slipped a piece of truth that got him docked to the tune of losing a finger and from it Ripley earned her first few hundred marks that no one else took a cut of.

Over a decade later she’s chummy with different crews but not in deep with any. Because of her wares, and her habitual friendmaking, Ripley is a woman of the streets able to pass safely-ish through most.

However, the  Gatekeepers still have leverage on her, and members she cares about so her ties with them are more than she’d like. They continue to make it difficult for Ripley to extricate herself from the dangerous trade in which she first bartered for her own brand of street neutrality. She’s ever looking for a way out, caring for her own, and keeping a stash of her jobs and earnings hidden for a rainy day.  Right now it’s not much but with the dedication the witch has to herself and her future one day it could, and will if she has her way, be something completely hers and completely safe

    Show Us What You've Got
    Character in Play:

Running wasn’t easy and it wasn’t exactly fun but in that moment for Ripley it was absolutely necessary. She breathed through the pain and used the strength of her Opal to to help propel her across jumps her legs were too tired to make. More that a bit had passed since the witch was in the sort of trouble she needed to book it across rooftops away from being or making a mess. Three weeks ago the turf she’d been on moments before was part of the city’s neutral route; a route that rarely changed. Some roads needed to be free for everyone or Goth just didn’t turn a profit for anyone.

Thanks to Lord Black everything was in flux. Not even the city’s long certain constants weren’t immune to the chaos brought in the new court’s wake. The ruling class never worried about the effects their power plays effected on the people below a certain income bracket. On the horizon Ripley saw a chance to bring her problem to its climax and conclusion on her terms. Profit was best won when the deck was stacked.

Rapidly approaching to the beat of her racing heart was the perfect deck with which she could deal her favorite hand if she spun the cards just so. It was all about timing, and timing was most of her trade. Yesterday’s bit of nothing gossip was two seconds away from becoming the hottest news in town depending on what winds went which way. All that aside, a dancer knew her cue, the beat, and how to make an entrance.

The upstarts too stupid to recognize her name and the consideration it was supposed to warrant chased her across more city blocks than the witch found helpful to count. Sometimes keeping track was defeatist and it was smarter to focus on how many more could be done. It was a game and Lady Martin kept track in roof tops. One more. Two more. Three more. Four.

Pacing Herself Lady Martin assessed the leap ahead. The next building was a library but it wasn’t what mattered. The space between was an alley Ripley knew well. It lead to one of the few parks in that end of Goth’s less gentle neighborhoods. She’d slept their often enough as an orphan to be certain she held a home advantage on its terrain.

Beneath her the rising gang’s lackeys chased and six steps away from one hell of a jump Ripley smiled. Four men, none darker than the Summer Sky’s gifts, chased. They’d never expect her to come down from above. They'd still be in shock as her first blows landed. Surprise was the best advantage next to outright power.

That late night Ripley was lucky enough to have both up her sleeve. Eager to strike she jumped using her control over the forces of push and pull (as she liked to think of them) to make her landing near silent. Just behind the unsuspecting hunting party the witch landed with a hungry grin.
