Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Every person has their secrets, but some people’s run deeper than others. Despite his Priestess caste and female body, Adel al-Sabbah’s mind and soul scream that they are male in a way that is indescribable and inescapable. He has hidden this since he was old enough to recognize that Blood society held no place for him.

While it is profound in its implications, this is arguably not Adel’s greatest deception. His mother leads the seditious True Sabbah. He resisted involvement for years, their goals and methods countermanded by his impulse to serve his Clan and help its people; he was young did not know how he would do that, but he was sure it would not be by drawing divisions in the Sabbah and following in the steps of a madman. He has now publicly joined their cause and finds himself as at his mother's right hand, using his influence and gained knowledge to subvert the faction’s goals and serving the very Queen that they aim to remove.

The burdens of his secrets and his family's pretensions led to the development of a solitary nature. Adel is not prone to great shows of emotion or acting brashly and speaks with the cadence and vocabulary of a well-educated individual. He is careful but not calculating, preferring to trust his instincts in a situation rather than over-planning and over-thinking. This has led to him being something of an outcast among his family, who see him as less ambitious and lacking promise, adding to his sense of isolation. Constantly fighting the pressure put on him to follow a certain path has given him a stubborn streak on the things that matter, and a practiced ability to let go on the things that don't. When the passion that is typically roiling behind his composure comes to a head, he developes a single-minded focus on his goals and shows a fierceness that is usually hidden outside of combat.

Behind the reserved facade, Adel is a very different person. When his guard lowers he radiates energy, slipping seamlessly from intense debate to snide quips to giddy laughter as if every emotion that he suppresses in his daily life is bursting out at once. His intellect becomes a vessel for jokes and banter and his usual caution is put to use determining best moment to spring a rhetorical trap.

This apparent ease is its own mask, hiding Adel's vulnerability and fear behind shows of bravado. With his Queen and the precious few people who know his biggest secrets, a third personality appears, melding elements of the first two with whispers of who he might be without his walls. He is still cautious and soft-spoken, but there is a rare warmth to his voice that sharpens to intensity when his emotions are running high. His service to Elenor has also granted him a sense of purpose he had previously lacked, reinforcing his own faith in the Darkness as a guiding force and giving him a taste of the joy and completeness he feels as a spiritual herald for others.

For the purposes of in-character play, this character will be referred to using pronouns and gendered language based on the perception of the point-of-view character.

Likes:
  • Combat. Whether training and sparring or in an actual fight, this is Adel’s element. His dedication and considerable skill aside, this is one of the few times when his body feels like his own.
  • Meditation. If fighting connects Adel’s mind to his body, meditation connects it to everything else. He makes a practice of spending time daily in quiet solitude, whether drifting through the Abyss, contemplating difficult matters or simply lost in thoughtlessness.
  • Salma. Adel rarely sees his niece, due to his brother moving separately from the rest of their family, but he adores the young witch. He also worries for her future as a child born to the Geiba before they were summarily executed, and hopes to be able to provide guidance as she grows.

    Dislikes:
  • The True Sabbah. Despite being raised with their ideology and by the woman who now leads them, Adel rejects the faction’s doctrine and methods. This isn’t to say his spurns tradition, just that he tends to interpret it differently. He is very careful to conceal this opinion around others, waiting for opportunities to undermine their cause.
  • Chess. Adel doesn't have much of a mind for the abstract strategy of the game. That would only earn a vague disinterest if it weren't his older brother's favorite pastime. They spent many evenings of his childhood playing games which Adel inevitably lost, and Matin was rarely a gracious victor.
  • Overcomplication. In Adel's experience, the most direct solution to a problem is usually the best one. While his family weaves their elaborate plots and play subtle social games, he trusts his intuition and follows the straightest line to his goal that he can see.

    Fears:
  • Connecting with people. When Adel was a child, he was taught the importance of honesty while he watched those around him cheat and lie for their own gains. With the depths of the secrets he now keeps, his difficulties with trust have been compounded and he rarely allows people to get very close to him.
  • Elenor dying. Service to his Queen is still new, but his fear for her life is visceral. She fills him with hope and promise and light and represents an opportunity for a life he had barely imagined, but he knows very well the amount of danger she is in. If she dies, he stands to lose more than a person he cherishes; were his contract to be found by the wrong people, his mother and the True Sabbah would learn of his betrayal and he would have no one to protect him from their retaliation.
  • Facing his truth. Once a secret is brought into the light, it is rarely possible to hide it away again. Adel has kept feelings about his sex and caste hidden until he decides what course he will take. If he accepts what he feels and lives his truth openly, he will be choosing the life of a pariah. If he makes that choice and regrets it, there will be nothing he can do to escape its consequences. If he resigns himself to living as a female within his society, he is not only stealing his own chance at happiness but will need to spend his life protecting this lie.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Connecting with the Darkness. The call to the Darkness that defines Adel’s caste has been strengthened and honed through years of meditation and focused communion. When the uncertainty and anxiety in his life become too much, the Abyss grants him comfort, strength and a sense of absoluteness. This practice has the secondary effect of making him especially aware of the psychic energy around him, allowing him to read weak and obscured psychic scents that most Blood would miss or be unable to decipher.
  • Physical Enhancement. Adel may have little control over the shape of his body, but he excels in using Craft to influence its function. He primarily uses this ability in combat, but enhanced speed and strength allow him to easily perform mundane physical tasks that would typically be relegated to a male. As a spy for Elenor, he can quickly move between locations and place himself where he might not otherwise be able to, eavesdropping from a hidden spot he was able to leap up to or sneaking a document onto his person while his mother is briefly occupied.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Healing Craft. Even the simple mending small wounds on one’s own body that most Blood are able to do without much thought is difficult for Adel. What Healing he is able to do is often crude and incomplete, and takes far more energy than it should.
  • Funerary Water Craft. The specialized Craft that allows Pruulian Priestesses to draw pure water from the blood of a corpse has evaded Adel from the beginning of his training. In addition to struggling with the skill itself, a feeling that he would be disrespecting the dead by not properly caring for their body makes studying this Craft frustrating, which then inhibits further progress.

    Life Story
    Family:
Mother: Zhaleh al-Sabbah, Summer Sky to Green Priestess (age 49, b. 144 AP)
Father: Isfandyar al-Sabbah, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Prince (age 48, b. 145 AP)
Sibling: Matin al-Sabbah, Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk Warlord Prince, (age 29, b. 164 AP)
Taken from character sheet and family rolls of Matin al-Sabbah

    History:
When Zhaleh al-Sabbah’s secondborn was marked with the psychic scent of a Priestess, her ambitions began to extend farther than they ever had before. Her firstborn, a Warlord Prince, could grant their family power and influence, but a child who shared her Caste would propagate her legacy.

Unfortunately, young Adileh did not comply with these plans. Where Matin had always been eager to please and quick to learn, the youngest member of their family resisted and struggled at every opportunity.

Adileh was not quite four years old when the relationship between Caste and gender, typically taken for granted without thought or question, began to trouble the child. Any actions or words that defied tradition were punished, and after that they were hidden well.

At six, like all Pruulian children, the young Priestess began to train as a warrior. Unlike for many Pruulian children, one of the instructors was a person who had the psychic scent of a witch, but was called “warlord.” Adileh had been shown a place in the world. It was soon made clear that this was not an option for every caste, but the seeds of possibility had been planted in Adileh’s mind and there was nothing now that could dig them up. In the safety of inner thought, away from family and mentors and Clan and Protocol, Adileh had quiet safety to explore beyond the reaches of what was possible in the open. Language defines how we think of ourselves, and as the words shifted, so did the self; gradually, from the depths of this troublesome and querulous child, the shadows of a bright, reticent little boy began to emerge.

To survive, however, the boy needed to remain hidden. In most outward appearances, Adileh remained a Priestess early in training, if not a particularly well-behaved one. The warrior training was where Adileh’s latent strength shone. It was also where, for the few years until puberty, the division between male and female softened. The name Adel, which was without gender in their culture, was easier to bark across a training field than Adileh, and it seemed to fit in ways no one else understood. The pieces were slowly falling into place, even if they tended to bring anxiety and more questions rather than relief.

Priestess nature and training had brought a degree of familiarity with the Darkness, but Adel's Birthright Ceremony brought a sense of comfort and truth that could only be found in the Abyss. It also brought the gift of a Purple Dusk Jewel.

As Adel’s feelings of masculinity became stronger, so did Zhaleh’s insistence that her child follow in her footsteps. Adel resisted, as always, wanting to focus on combat training. Eventually they found a compromise in communing with the Darkness. It was useful enough that Zhaleh wouldn't argue with it, and Adel could spend hours in mediation, drifting through the Abyss, exploring the unseen maleness that was becoming stronger by the day.

The start of puberty brought that confidence to a quick and decisive end. Lines started to become curves, which was almost bearable. The first Moon’s Blood brought an end to warrior training, which was less so. Against Zhaleh’s insistence, Adel began training with the Sabbah’s oasis guardians, Priestesses who protected the Clan's water claims. It wasn't the Trials, or the Brotherhood, or becoming a warlord, but it was better than remaining in Zhaleh’s shadow. When the elder Priestess’s attempts redoubled after the execution of the Geiba, so did the younger's determination to not become intertwined in their family's politics. This stalemate continued until shortly before Adel’s Offering to the Darkness and ended with the rise of the Sabbah’s new Queen.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:
Spring, year 192 AP, during the events of Thrice Lost. Thrice Found.

Adel watched Elenor Lirion draw lines in packed earth, puzzling through the first of the three Trials that would make her a member of his Clan. There was no reason for him to be here other than his mother's insistence; he had no interest in her schemes, and this was unlikely to change that, but it had been easier to be here than to deal with the fight that would have inevitably followed if he hadn’t come.

The first test ended, jostling Adel from his thoughts. His brother stood in front of him with tense, drawn shoulders and white knuckles, a spring pressed so tight that the slightest nudge will make it unfurl with force and speed. Something in the center of the courtyard, unseen by Adel, was that nudge and Matin burst forward, a flash of movement that was immediately swallowed by emptiness.

Adel caught their mother’s self-satisfied expression and the smoldering anger he had been carrying ignited his shock and confusion. He reeled behind a placid face, trying to make sense of this as he reached out a tendril of psychic power and brushed against her sight shield. She let him in, focusing her strength on the physical shields that Adel now saw Matin slam his body against, screaming in wordless, agonized rage.

Adel finally looked back to the center of the courtyard, where the light-haired Queen was engaged in close combat with the Black Widow Shadya.

    Matin was Bonded to her.

A chill ran up Adel's spine, too aware of the implications of this to find humor in the irony of it. He looked back at their mother, the Priestess who had no doubt orchestrated these trials to kill the supplicant if possible. He didn't know what a Warlord Prince might do in that situation when he had hated the Queen and his Bond was fresh.

And if the Lirion survived this, then… then what? Matin might have been avoiding Zhaleh to protect his daughter, but he still believed most of what the True Sabbah were doing was right. It would be a small matter for their mother to twist this Bond to her advantage. Any love she bore for her children was too overshadowed by her desire for power, and Matin had never quite been able to withhold what she demanded of him.

That would leave Adel alone in wanting no part in this. Adel, who would shortly make his Offering to the Darkness. Who was such a gifted Priestess, who felt such a strong call to the Abyss, that Zhaleh was sure he would wear the Sapphire. After that, she would send him to The Peaceful Place, where could learn some propriety and poise, traits he clearly lacked the discipline to develop on his own. Then he would be ready to be a pawn in his mother's games. Adel wondered if she had ever considered that he might understand what he was doing when he refused to have a part in her plots, or if she just saw one more piece of adolescent stubbornness that her daughter should have outgrown.
