I Have A Concern

Danyal did not like Hayll. He had not liked Dena Nehele either. He was a desert man; it was his home as much as his identity. The sun had baked his skin into a leathery brown, sand had scoured his heart clean, and the Worms had lulled him to sleep with their song. Here, there were no Worms or sand, and even the sun was less present, hidden as it was behind clouds.

There was so much water! Everywhere he looked there were rivers, lakes, oceans, rain, fountains, puddles. It made his skin crawl and made the old man wonder what people did with themselves if they were so water fat? At least Hayll was warm, unlike Dena Nehele. Here he could go back to wearing his traditional robes and think about anything other than the way the cold weather made his joints ache.

Lady Sabbah had been crazy to undertake such a journey. Danyal still held firm to that, but at least it was over halfway done. That was for the best because it seemed as though anywhere they went she managed to pick up new Bonded. The most recent of these was another part long-lived just like the Lady. Prince Dyslin seemed a reasonable fellow but Danyal didn’t like how attached Elenor seemed to be getting already. It would be better for the image of the Sabbah for her to focus more on her Pruulian bonded and Courtiers. Not because Danyal thought it was worth giving a damn about the color of one’s skin, but because others did and Elenor had enough problems. That and that these foreign men, however well-intentioned, would not be able to teach her anything about the Territory in which she ruled, and there was so much the Queen still needed to learn.

Whether he approved of Prince Dyslin or not, it was clear that the man was already very dedicated. That spoke to his character and as Master of the Guard it did his heart good to know that his Queen had another protector who would give his life for hers. For this reason, when he received a note from the Prince mentioning that he was concerned for Lady Elenor and wanted to speak in private, Danyal took it seriously.

While Elenor was out swimming, watched over by Leila and overseen by Luc from the window of the Guesthouse -because Danyal didn’t want to take chances- the Master of the Guard sent a reply to Michael, instructing him to come to Danyal’s room. When he arrived, the older-looking of the two was sitting at a small table near the window, looking out over the pool and the two women down there. He rose, motioning to the seat across from the one he has so recently vacated. “Please come in. I’m glad we’re getting a chance to speak, but before anything else can you tell me what your note meant? If there is a threat to the Queen’s safety I need to know.”

Michael had spent the last several minutes thinking of how best to approach Elenors Master of the Guard. What he had to say did not concern any immediate threat, of course, but… He still thought it would be easier to talk about if he didn’t have the distinct sensation that Danyal did not like him. Or, perhaps it was not he, himself that the Master of the Guard disapproved of, but what he represented? Mike hated guessing games. He preferred his puzzles to have logical solutions, but human interaction was rarely as logical as all that. Eventually, Mike just gave up and headed to his meeting with the Warlord.

When Michael was ushered into the room, he nodded his greetings, protocol-perfect. “Lord al-Hague. Thank you for the invitation and for your time. Please though, be at ease. I assure you if the concern I had was an imminent threat, I would not have waited for a polite time to seek you out.” The thought briefly occurred to Michael that for Danyal to have this worry meant that there HAD been threats to Elenor that people waited to report to him. And that... That was just plain unacceptable.
It was an effort of will, but the Warlord Prince managed not to grow, either at the thought of a threat to Elenor or the thought if it being handled with ineptitude. Making the other man defensive, as a growl was sure to do, was not going to do anyone any good, and he needed this to go well, to help him understand better.

“No, my concern is of a different nature,” He nodded in deference to the Master of the Guard. “Would you please sound shield us? What I do have to say is sensitive, and I don’t know every person in this building.” And the man’s Red was dark enough that Mike would feel comfortable speaking once the man agreed. Michael sat in the offered chair and once he felt the stirring in the Abyss below him that was the use of a much darker jewel, he continued.

“I am worried about our Lady’s Chalice and Inner Webs. I spent yesterday with her in part because I could not fathom leaving her alone, even for a minute. Something is… wrong. A vaguely grasping gesture accompanied that word, as though Michael sought for a better term, but it eluded him.

Danyal relaxed when Prince Dyslin confirmed that the concern he had for Lady Elenor’s safety wasn’t immediate in nature and allowed his old, stiff muscles to relax a bit. With a nod he called in a bottle of wine and two glasses, pouring some for both. “In that case, settle in and let me know what’s on your mind while the Lady splashes around down there. She seems very happy to be in the water.” Even as he said it, Danyal shuddered, uncertain as to how the Queen could swim the way she did, in water that reached over her head. It was nice to see a smile on her face after so much pain, but being submerged in liquid voluntarily seemed altogether alien to the old desert dweller.

The Warlord Prince across the table was emanating displeasure for a moment. Danyal’s eyebrows rose as he slip the wineglass across to Michael but he said nothing, allowing the other male to deal with whatever prickle he had in his pants in quiet dignity instead of trying to guess. If it was important, he’d find a way to speak of it, Warlord Princes always did.

His request for an aural shield had Danyal’s eyebrows rising even higher though. “Of course.” A moment later, “it is done. Speak freely, Prince.”

He leaned back getting ready to address whatever his worries were.

I am worried about our Lady’s Chalice and Inner Webs. I spent yesterday with her in part because I could not fathom leaving her alone, even for a minute. Something is… wrong.

Danyal let out a long sigh and rubbed the bridge of his nose. This beast. His hand lowered back to the table and he straightened to look Michael in the eye. “You’re right to be concerned. Our Lady’s mind is a known issue. Before we left Pruul she required the services of a skilled Mind Healer for a crack in her Chalice. She had not informed any of us that she had been having difficulties before then but we should have realized it. Elenor is… a private person, a caution she learned too well in her life before Pruul. We’ve been warned by Lady Shadya to keep a watch for self-harm, especially when she gets stressed, and for self-destructive behavior. I’ve caught her digging her nails into her thigh hard enough to leave bruises during meetings on many occasions. She’s very good at shielding things from sight and scent so it’s sometimes hard to tell what she might be hiding. I -we-worry about her all the time.”

Danyal leaned forward, “Lady Elenor has promised she’s not a true danger to herself, but with a cracked chalice I’m not sure how… reliable her promises are. It’s why she’s rarely if ever left alone and why she’s not allowed to lock the door to whatever room she’s in if she is. I know that’s probably not the news you want to hear, Prince. I’m sorry.” And he truly was. A Queen should not have been allowed to suffer so much emotional damage, though it also worried him given that she ruled his people. “She’s not crazy, that much is obvious. Her judgment is sound and her mind is clear, but I agree, something is wrong and it’s probably impacting her life far more than she will ever let us see.”
