I Have A Concern
« on: Jul 09, 18, 11:53:43 PM »
Danyal did not like Hayll. He had not liked Dena Nehele either. He was a desert man; it was his home as much as his identity. The sun had baked his skin into a leathery brown, sand had scoured his heart clean, and the Worms had lulled him to sleep with their song. Here, there were no Worms or sand, and even the sun was less present, hidden as it was behind clouds.

There was so much water! Everywhere he looked there were rivers, lakes, oceans, rain, fountains, puddles. It made his skin crawl and made the old man wonder what people did with themselves if they were so water fat? At least Hayll was warm, unlike Dena Nehele. Here he could go back to wearing his traditional robes and think about anything other than the way the cold weather made his joints ache.

Lady Sabbah had been crazy to undertake such a journey. Danyal still held firm to that, but at least it was over halfway done. That was for the best because it seemed as though anywhere they went she managed to pick up new Bonded. The most recent of these was another part long-lived just like the Lady. Prince Dyslin seemed a reasonable fellow but Danyal didn’t like how attached Elenor seemed to be getting already. It would be better for the image of the Sabbah for her to focus more on her Pruulian bonded and Courtiers. Not because Danyal thought it was worth giving a damn about the color of one’s skin, but because others did and Elenor had enough problems. That and that these foreign men, however well-intentioned, would not be able to teach her anything about the Territory in which she ruled, and there was so much the Queen still needed to learn.

Whether he approved of Prince Dyslin or not, it was clear that the man was already very dedicated. That spoke to his character and as Master of the Guard it did his heart good to know that his Queen had another protector who would give his life for hers. For this reason, when he received a note from the Prince mentioning that he was concerned for Lady Elenor and wanted to speak in private, Danyal took it seriously.

While Elenor was out swimming, watched over by Leila and overseen by Luc from the window of the Guesthouse -because Danyal didn’t want to take chances- the Master of the Guard sent a reply to Michael, instructing him to come to Danyal’s room. When he arrived, the older-looking of the two was sitting at a small table near the window, looking out over the pool and the two women down there. He rose, motioning to the seat across from the one he has so recently vacated. “Please come in. I’m glad we’re getting a chance to speak, but before anything else can you tell me what your note meant? If there is a threat to the Queen’s safety I need to know.”

Michael had spent the last several minutes thinking of how best to approach Elenors Master of the Guard. What he had to say did not concern any immediate threat, of course, but… He still thought it would be easier to talk about if he didn’t have the distinct sensation that Danyal did not like him. Or, perhaps it was not he, himself that the Master of the Guard disapproved of, but what he represented? Mike hated guessing games. He preferred his puzzles to have logical solutions, but human interaction was rarely as logical as all that. Eventually, Mike just gave up and headed to his meeting with the Warlord.

When Michael was ushered into the room, he nodded his greetings, protocol-perfect. “Lord al-Hague. Thank you for the invitation and for your time. Please though, be at ease. I assure you if the concern I had was an imminent threat, I would not have waited for a polite time to seek you out.” The thought briefly occurred to Michael that for Danyal to have this worry meant that there HAD been threats to Elenor that people waited to report to him. And that... That was just plain unacceptable.
It was an effort of will, but the Warlord Prince managed not to grow, either at the thought of a threat to Elenor or the thought if it being handled with ineptitude. Making the other man defensive, as a growl was sure to do, was not going to do anyone any good, and he needed this to go well, to help him understand better.

“No, my concern is of a different nature,” He nodded in deference to the Master of the Guard. “Would you please sound shield us? What I do have to say is sensitive, and I don’t know every person in this building.” And the man’s Red was dark enough that Mike would feel comfortable speaking once the man agreed. Michael sat in the offered chair and once he felt the stirring in the Abyss below him that was the use of a much darker jewel, he continued.

“I am worried about our Lady’s Chalice and Inner Webs. I spent yesterday with her in part because I could not fathom leaving her alone, even for a minute. Something is… wrong. A vaguely grasping gesture accompanied that word, as though Michael sought for a better term, but it eluded him.

Danyal relaxed when Prince Dyslin confirmed that the concern he had for Lady Elenor’s safety wasn’t immediate in nature and allowed his old, stiff muscles to relax a bit. With a nod he called in a bottle of wine and two glasses, pouring some for both. “In that case, settle in and let me know what’s on your mind while the Lady splashes around down there. She seems very happy to be in the water.” Even as he said it, Danyal shuddered, uncertain as to how the Queen could swim the way she did, in water that reached over her head. It was nice to see a smile on her face after so much pain, but being submerged in liquid voluntarily seemed altogether alien to the old desert dweller.

The Warlord Prince across the table was emanating displeasure for a moment. Danyal’s eyebrows rose as he slip the wineglass across to Michael but he said nothing, allowing the other male to deal with whatever prickle he had in his pants in quiet dignity instead of trying to guess. If it was important, he’d find a way to speak of it, Warlord Princes always did.

His request for an aural shield had Danyal’s eyebrows rising even higher though. “Of course.” A moment later, “it is done. Speak freely, Prince.”

He leaned back getting ready to address whatever his worries were.

I am worried about our Lady’s Chalice and Inner Webs. I spent yesterday with her in part because I could not fathom leaving her alone, even for a minute. Something is… wrong.

Danyal let out a long sigh and rubbed the bridge of his nose. This beast. His hand lowered back to the table and he straightened to look Michael in the eye. “You’re right to be concerned. Our Lady’s mind is a known issue. Before we left Pruul she required the services of a skilled Mind Healer for a crack in her Chalice. She had not informed any of us that she had been having difficulties before then but we should have realized it. Elenor is… a private person, a caution she learned too well in her life before Pruul. We’ve been warned by Lady Shadya to keep a watch for self-harm, especially when she gets stressed, and for self-destructive behavior. I’ve caught her digging her nails into her thigh hard enough to leave bruises during meetings on many occasions. She’s very good at shielding things from sight and scent so it’s sometimes hard to tell what she might be hiding. I -we-worry about her all the time.”

Danyal leaned forward, “Lady Elenor has promised she’s not a true danger to herself, but with a cracked chalice I’m not sure how… reliable her promises are. It’s why she’s rarely if ever left alone and why she’s not allowed to lock the door to whatever room she’s in if she is. I know that’s probably not the news you want to hear, Prince. I’m sorry.” And he truly was. A Queen should not have been allowed to suffer so much emotional damage, though it also worried him given that she ruled his people. “She’s not crazy, that much is obvious. Her judgment is sound and her mind is clear, but I agree, something is wrong and it’s probably impacting her life far more than she will ever let us see.”

Mike accepted the wine with a polite and heart felt word of thanks to Elenor's Master of the Guard. Danyal had been right about that. What he had just said was in fact not what Michael had wanted to hear. He had hoped to be told he was off base. He had kinda looked forward to being chewed out by the Master of the Guard for thinking something was wrong with Elenor. The fact that he had not been... Made Michael's skin itch. He took a hearty swallow of his wine to clear the unpleasant flavor of the conversation from his tongue, before leaning back in his chair to watch the pair of females below.

After a few minutes of companionable, if contemplative, silence, Mike thought to ask another question that was very related. He steeled himself because no matter the answer, the next bit of conversation was not very likely to be kind to his emotions.

"Lord al-Hague, tell me, does the rest of the court know about the scar on her leg that Elenor keeps sight-shielded?" He hoped he was not the only one. Even talking about it felt somehow like betraying a confidence, even if it was a confidence El didn't even remember placing.

He watched the older man - Michael could not help but think of him that way for all that he was easily ten or twelve times the short-lived man's age - hoping to see something in him that would ease the dread curled in the pit of his stomach.

He had a feeling his wish would not be granted.

Danyal blinked, then blinked again. “She has a sight-shielded scar? Why would she cover up a scar?” He had never been one to understand female vanity but…

He leaned forward, concern knitting his brow. “It’s not just for looks, is it? On the morning she formed her Court… No, I don’t think I can properly explain, here.” Danyal called in a memory crystal that he had tracked down after the event. He had wanted to go back to his Tribe, to show the Queen who ruled them Elenor’s speech and explain why he had chosen to serve in her Court and thus deny the Hague one of their Darkest Jewels for a time.

Now, this might help Michael understand. “Our Queen decided it was dramatically appropriate to stomp around entirely naked in front of the whole Clan that day. I don’t think her mood at the time would have bothered to sight shield something that was just superficial. Before you look, though, take a breath and remember that she’s fine and there was no permanent injury done her that day. The blood can just be a bit distracting, especially to a male bonded to her.”

The Master of the Guard slid the crystal across the table to the Warlord Prince. “This is how she formed her Court and why we’ve all been worried about her ever since. She’s brittle and bold and that combination is dangerous. If you know of something that is adding to that or have any clue we might use to help not feel so unsteady, I would welcome it. I’m a… practical man. Matters of the mind are not something I have as much experience with as I’d like. I can keep her safe from outside attack to the best of my ability but none of that will matter one bit if she’s tearing herself apart from the inside. Do you think this scar has something to do with that?”

Michael, too, was a practical man, so he heeded the words of the older Warlord sitting across from him. He took a long moment to center himself, and to look out at his Queen splashing around below. He could remember when his Maricia used to splash at the spring of faintly brackish water that bubbled up in the woods at the home they lived in, together. Watching her swim over and speak with her healer made him smile, and it was that expression that was on his face when he took a deep breath and touched the memory crystal. A faint brush of his Tiger's Eye and he was able to access what was contained within.

Danyal al-Hague had been right to warn him. Distracting was one word for the sight of his Queen, so clearly hurt. She was, however, magnificent. Her declarations and pronouncements as she stood there half bled-out in the sands of Pruul were powerful. Foolish, but powerful. Michael was furious. Furious that someone had done this to her. Furious that he had not been there to stop it. Furious that he was not in a position to kill everyone who had ever harmed or thought of harming his Queen.

Michael set the crystal down with a click, very careful not to break it as he did so with almost exaggerated care. He closed his eyes again and leaned back, staring up at the ceiling. When he slowly opened his eyes with a long, slow exhale, he continued starring upwards. "Is she still where I can see her?" He knew if he opened his eyes and looked and Elenor was not in sight, very little could make him stay and finish his conversation before going to check on her. The memories he had just experienced were far too visceral.

Once he got his answer, Mike opened his eyes and checked for himself, relieved to see that El was out of the water and soothing the healer, who was crying for some reason. Woman's matters, he supposed. They were far from home, and perhaps the woman below had someone to miss. Michael dismissed that with a mental shrug, though he made a point to find out later. He did hate to see a Witch in pain.

Finally, he answered Danyal. "Yes, she has a sight-shielded scar, and no, you are very correct that it is not a matter of vanity. The sight of it seems to set her off, and with some of the dreams she's talked about having... do you know if she forgets her dreams often, even when they wake her in terror. Or rather... forgets having dreams or having woken in terror altogether? My gut tells me there is something more going on than meets the eye with our Lady, and yes, I think that scar is tied into it somehow."

Danyal watched the Hayllian’s face as he observed the memory crystal’s contents and felt for the man. He was not bonded to Lady Lirion but even so, that day had made him feel protective and angry enough to offer her his service. She had been inspiring and vulnerable and that was a heady combination for any male of the Blood. That this one was controlled enough to ask for confirmation of his Queen’s whereabouts before opening his eyes made Danyal’s respect for the man grow. “Yes, she’s where you can see her and is perfectly well.”

Michael’s eyes opened and Danyal watched him instead of the two women, wondering idly what it must be like to feel a heartbond. He had never been so fortunate but if it was anything like the love he had felt for his late wife, it must be the greatest blessing the Darkness could provide.

When they came, the Warlord Prince’s words were unwelcomingly familiar. “She’s had bad dreams for as long as I’ve known her but they have gotten worse over the past few months. Lady Judiah, Lady Shadya, Prince Matin, and several others have reported back to me from time to time that they are concerned about her mental and physical health given the quality of her sleep. While making the desert crossing north on this trip we woke up half the camp a few times. She shrugs it off quickly but there is nothing like hearing your Queen scream in terror to create a lasting memory. This forgetting business though… I had not noticed it and neither has anyone else reported it, though it would make sense. She has never acknowledged the bad dreams she has outside of the moment in which they happen in my recollection. However, it is not the first time it’s been brought to my attention.”

He called in a note, his face grave, and passed it to Michael. “This was given to me by Prince Mercer, the Shadow to the Queen of Dena Nehele. Apparently, our-” foolish and suicidal, “recklessly independent Queen took a walk alone in the Palace while we were staying with Lady Vlas after such a bad dream and ran into the Prince. They talked and she asked him to deliver me a note. You may read it id you wish but the short of it is that he was concerned because she seemed to be forgetting things the moment after they happened. He suspects a Dark Black Widow is involved and that it is somehow tied to Hourglass craft - that those are the memories she forgets while others linger. My concern,” here, Danyal stopped and rubbed the bridge of his nose, his heart aching for his Clan and the woman who ruled it. “My concern, Prince Dyslin, is that a Red Black Widow skilled at mind healing and trusted by this Court looked her over just before we left. He found and corrected a crack in her chalice but did not find anything else amiss. This means that if someone has messed with her mind, it wasn’t our enemy for she too wears the Red, but someone Darker even than that. There is no such woman or man in Pruul so it must have happened before she even arrived to us, which means that whatever it is has been working on Lady Sabbah for at least two years with none of us the wiser.”

The letter that Lord al-Hague hands over is well-written and upon parchment that, perhaps strangely, smells of a garden during the winter. Underneath it all is the touch of witchblood and sets a somewhat ominous tone considering the contents contained therein.

Lady Elenor Lirion al-Sabbah and the Triangle of her Court,

While the contents in this letter have already been discussed with the Master of the Guard, Lord Danyal al-Hague, it must also be recorded and written down so that Lady Elenor is able to maintain awareness of it and those that might be able to help glean further information.

In the early hours of the morning, I found Lady Elenor within the gardens of the Territory Court after suffering from a nightmare. Due to both my training and growing skill, I was awoken due to sensing her nightmares. This brought me to the Queen and lead to us sitting and speaking of the nightmares and otherwise that beleaguered her.

Make no mistake they are not simply nightmares. As much as I can determine at some point in her past (before my birth, I suspect) someone entered Lady Elenor's mind and sealed off some portion of her memories, a piece of her very Self. For what reason this was done, I know not. I will look into it further, spin what webs I can to discern truth, but I can at least assure that this was not done out of a desire to harm or otherwise debilitate the Queen.

That said: the bindings of these memories are failing and likewise creating other issues that are potentially dangerous and harmful to the Queen. While with me, Lady Elenor seemed unable to remember anything related to Black Widow craft if it was shown to her or discussed. I recommend that - for her safety - Black Widow craft be done outside of her presence unless it is absolutely necessary. To do so invites mental pain, anguish, and body spasms upon the Queen, worsening the headaches and otherwise that are born of a part of her mind having been separated from the rest for so long.

What else I can tell you is that whoever did this was doubly blessed by the Darkness with a Green as their Birthright and a Gray as their Offering. To unweave what they have done will likely require someone of a Dark descent as well as extensive skill in Mind Healing. (That is not to say that someone lighter could not do something but the Gray has left a presence behind within Lady Elenor. To work against that, as a lighter jewel, one will have to be both knowledgeable, cunning, and resourceful.) I advise that this is done as soon as possible as the longer the schism within her Self remains, the greater the chance of permanent damage done to her Chalice. long life lasting damage, and permanent memory loss.

Until such time that she sees a capable Mind Healer and all of this is confirmed, there is not much that can be done. Her body is slowly wearing thin as her mind cannot let her truly rest. What little I can do to help, in easing her sleep and allowing it to be dreamless, has been left with Lord al-Hague along with instructions. It is my sincere hope that you will not suffer this for much longer, Lady Elenor, and that you find the bird of Green and Gray that caused all this. That ultimately may be the fastest way to see you healed but until then you must simply hold together. Trust in your Triangle and let them support you in this time.

With regards and the sincerest hope for recovery,
