Appearance

Distinguishing Features

Flawless, typical Long-lived skin, sometimes altered by craft to brighter or darker. Pure, abyssal black hair. Well-trained Alto, rippling laugh, mischievous giggle. Floats across rooms, lounges, reclines. Smells of sizzling craft and spicy wine; cultivated, gentled demeanor. Proper smile. Her eyes are her best feature, somehow both classically Hayllian and exotically unique at the same time. They are a soft, shimmering gold. Her worst feature is that she is too slender for a proper Hayllian beauty, being only sweetly curved and not full-figured.

Personality

Personality:

Maerina is a young woman born to every privilege and advantage. She has a loving family, and a Queen mother with both the time and inclination to use her gifts to not only enrich the land but to be certain her family is heart-whole and sane. While Maerina is aware that she is a living embodiment of the peace that followed the Purge, she is also painfully conscious that a terrible Price was paid that she might come through the Purge unscathed. She is a unifying symbol to the people of Citra, and spreads her healing generously throughout that District.

Her dual awareness of her value, not merely for what she can do and what she represents, but also of the cost of her existence lends a gravity to her nature unusual in one so young, and leads her to a fatalistic outlook. The added burden of being a Healer only strengthens her innate, instinctive understanding of her place as a chosen leader of her people. She believes in destiny and fate, courage and purpose in life. She feels that each person is carefully chosen and placed in their lot in life, and if everyone does their part, then each and every person would  receive all that they need to be happy and fulfilled within their station. Yet the acts of others impact all those around them, and so Askavi was able to (briefly) conquer Hayll.

The only time such a view fails her is at Winsol, when people celebrate Witch and the Purge which freed both Realms from the Askvai threat. The pressure she feels at that time threatens the world view she has been raised to. She is torn between guilt, pride and the terrible burden of repaying the lives and Jewels of all those who sacrificed themselves to ensure her birth.

Generous by nature, she has never known want or hunger. She has never greatly desired anything that she could not easily achieve. Neither has she ever feared for her life in any true sense. The most risk she experiences occurs at formal political events at the capitol, dealing with Warlord-Princes, and the risks inherent in her own Caste. Untempered by life, not yet tested by time, the coming years will refine who and what she is.

Compassionate, she is the sort to mix Emotion Craft, Seduction Craft and Compulsion Craft with her healing, so that her patients are not afraid or shocked by what she does. It never occurs to her that she might not have the right to so affect her patient's mind and heart while seeing to their body. She has the right to do whatever is necessary. That is why she is not merely Blood, but Hundred Families.

Likes:
  • 1 Owning Land. The only presents that really make her happy come with a land deed. Owning land is personal wealth and power, a right restricted to the Hundred Families. Land offers her a chance at independence from her family, that longed-for status of adult. She is the youngest child, and though much cherished, unlikely to inherit any sizable land through normal means. Large estates stay together because the family passes them down to only one child, fully intact. So her favorite presents are flats, farms and other assorted bits of land. Keep your diamond rings, three-thousand gold an ounce perfumes, and fancy shoes. She wants land.
  • 2 Doing the impossible. She loves all facets of Craft, and studies extensively, but her favorite actions are when she does something deemed impossible. She has never lost the mystic, amazed view of Craft she held as a child, nor has she ever sought to hide or minimize the glory of her power, even when dealing with Landen. Using Craft to achieve things Landen could not, and especially those things other Healers cannot accomplish, reaffirms her place in the scheme of things: a privileged child of Mother Night, Scion of the Hundred families. While Healing is a reminder that she is a Symbol of peace and prosperity, any use of Craft asserts her right to power and authority. While her very existence helps to both unify Citra against the True Threat (Askavi), her power to bring back even missing limbs is a reminder to the people that they have such a gift only because each person works harmoniously within their station. Those who reach beyond their station, such as the Askavi, invite the wrath of Witch herself. And Witch was willing to punish all of the Realms in order to force the Askavi back behind their own borders.
  • 3 Art. Not mere prettiness, but the heart-wrenching beauty of true art. From sculpture, to painting, to a well performed play, art soothes and thrills her both. It taunts her with emotions she has never felt, stirring that indefinable, existential ache that dwells within her soul. Despite having tried ardently throughout her life to create such painful beauty herself, she's never managed it. Her own work is technically proficient but lacks soul. This makes her uneasy, filling her with a sense of internal failure that is neither logical nor easily dismissed. Yet the pain is real; it is the only thing she has ever attempted at which she has failed. She compares herself regularly to the Hayllian Masters, and finds her work to be hopelessly lacking.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Filth. She hates dirt, filth, blood. When she Heals, she is at pains to keep it neat. She never resorts to physical surgery, and in truth finds the sight and scent of blood distasteful. Even signs of disease make her queasy. She wastes power wildly to erase all such stigma and sign of illness or injury entirely though Craft (even Cleansing Craft) rather than though physical washing or surgery.
  • 2 Short-lived. They are ignorant, hasty and Jealous. She sees no value in them, not even to pity them. They are deeply flawed, genetically, and the Long-lived can only wait patiently until they die off. Her only true interest in one would be to try to and find a way to fix them, by extending their lifespan. It is worse to mix short-lived and long- lived bloodlines than Blood and Landen. In fact, having dwelt her entire life in an area that was 96 percent Landen, she is much more aware of their sensibilities and value than she would be of any short-lived.
  • 3 Cruelty to Animals/slaves/children/elders. Raised that slavery is normal, that those in slavery have demonstrated an inability to cope with the responsibilities of freedom, she nonetheless would no more condone cruelty to a slave than she would to an animal or child. She sees no value in torture, no justification in rape, and has contempt for those who rule only through fear. Thus she has developed a true aversion to the mixed blood, mindlessly cruel queen on the throne. True strength, and the divine right to rule, are both indicated by the ability to earn wiling service. The two universals of Blood Law (No Rape, and a Queen must find males willing to serve) are best applied to all of the Blood.

    Fears:
  • 1 Upsetting the Social Order. Witch brought the Purge because the Askavi nations had forgotten their assigned place. Maerina believes that upsetting the social order invites another vicious reprisal from Witch and Mother Night, whether that be from freeing a slave, trying to conquer a land not traditionally your own, or even passing a law that brings too much change, too fast. She is exceedingly wary of placing a Landen on the Senate; a Landen is clearly, most certainly, no scion of the Hundred Families. It invites disaster to do such a thing. The Landen where she grew up are content to wield power through service, wealth, and the crafting of goods; in return, the Blood both offer protection and turn their talents to areas that do not compete with the Landen.
  • 2 Spies. While most of her Nightmares center on Eyriens in general and their hated half-breed spawn, she hates the idea of any foreign spy getting a foothold in her home. To her mind, they are a group of people steeped in deception and betrayal, sure to envy Hayll's wealth, beauty and order. While irrational, her fear has been carefully and purposely stirred by the dreadful rumors regarding the Askavi envoys, the near-constant discovery of spies from every realm, and the knowledge that so many Territories are desperate for the wealth Hayll holds. Even now rumors of diverse factions, likely stirred by outside interests, abound.
  • 3 Eyriens. The Winged Ones, more bestial in nature than even the true Blood themselves, terrify her. Unnatural, unbalanced and willing to destroy the world in order to posses it, she fears them greatly. She was born after they were banished by the Purge, and was raised on the legacy of the wounds, wrongs and cruelty they left in their wake. She has never met a purebred of the species and the half-breeds she has met had crippled, tiny wings and a desperate desire to fit in.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Flesh Shaping. She has an instinctual grasp of how to shape the soft tissues. She can coax them into growth, remove them, or strengthen them. She can even affect the color of hair and skin. She seeks to use this gift to avoid bloody surgery or other, messy healing arts. Indeed, she first learned it entirely to stop bleeding via Craft, so that any Healing she did wouldn't be gross.
  • 2 Bone Shaping. Deep within every Healer lies a desire to do the impossible. And so it is, even with Maerina. She can bring forth bone, provided her patient is strong enough to provide the raw materials, or another is willing to sacrifice their own for the patient. She has so far mostly used this to remove crippled wings from half-breeds longing to be able to hide the curse of their birth, to restore a face to beauty and hands to fully functional. But she can, if the patient is strong enough, bring forth whole limbs.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Herb and Knife healing. Maerina does not do physical surgery or perform any other part of healing that is revolting and gross. To her, only those lacking in proper Craft training would do that part. When she Heals, she has other, lesser folks to make tonics and brews, or provide minor surgery. She does everything with Craft, even setting bones.
  • 2 Tonics and medicines. Maerina does not make tonics, medicines or poultices. She does not waste her time making medicines others are perfectly capable of concocting. She has no interest in making them, and plenty of money to buy tonics from Darker Jeweled healers than herself. When possible, she buys them from Lene's healer. Making these things is boring, messy and tedious. She'd rather spend the hours sculpting a perfect eye socket. She works often with the Landen, and that requires time and patience all on its own; those areas, of knowing her patients and perfecting her Healing, are where she spends her effort.

    History:

The Augustinus family is one of the Hundred Families, those who trace their ancestry back to the founding of Hayll itself. Maerina's family hold vast ancestral holdings in the District of Cirta, and have several times crossed with the Agrippa family. In addition to great wealth, her mother is the Cirta District Queen, and her eldest brother holds the Senate Seat for the Augustinus family. Her family holds a prominent position guarding the border of Dhemlan, and they own a huge, contiguous swath of land which includes the river mouth coming out of the mountains and most of Hayll's best wine country.

It is there, in that lush and beautiful valley, that the city of Quvopa dwells. Every stick and stone within the area is owned by her family. The city is a paradise year round, with little variation in temperature other than beautiful, subtle colors in fall, more blooms than normal in spring, and brief winter thunderstorms that are so lovely poets travel to the valley to write of them, and artists to paint them. While in no way rivaling the glorious capitol, Quvopa is still a sophisticated and elegant city filled with art, education and a truly remarkable temple. Rolling hills filled with grapevines and fruitful vineyards (much like Sonoma Valley, CA) flow down river, while a rich forest flourishes within the mountains.

The forest is both violently protected and carefully maintained. It is bordered with exquisite orchards and gardens that display every exotic and expensive tree used for luxury items or rare cuisine, including chocolate and vanilla trees, cherry and manzanita. The native trees give a dark, luxurious lumber, the steady, year-round rains a perfectly even board without flaw or knot. The Long-lived know forestry as no short-lived ever will, and the best of the individual trees are carefully nurtured by the District Queen and her Court. The wood from the forbidden forest creates unequaled musical instruments, sold for prices which can beggar a minor noble. The district Queen herself has the right to harvest as many as 11 trees per year, but this is not the rough, careless lumbering that clears mountains or builds houses, but a pinpoint harvest of perfect trees cultivated individually over a 1000 years, and chosen only just before their natural death. The Augustinus Queens are renowned throughout the Realm for their ability to discern precisely when to harvest each one, and their gifts cause the trees to produce truly superior lumber for luxury items, even furniture and jewelry.

Or, in darker times, profoundly dangerous weaponry. Darkwood bows are known to hit harder and resist damage better than those made from other woods, and the arrows made from the wood are both deadly at piercing armor and highly accurate. Darkwood shields are stronger than iron, lighter than steel, and easily shaped. Because of this, it is a constant challenge to keep the forest from being forested out of existence by poachers and raiders, or even rival Hundred Family members.

The Landen in Cirta are not brutalized, but close partners in the husbandry of the land, the sanctity of the border and the glories of the Hayllian life. Unlike many Aristos, the necessity of holding this border has kept most of this branch of the Augustinus family as in touch with the duties of their heritage as the rights, lending an organized, almost martial air to the locals. Bordering Dhemlan, rather than Askavi, the actual estates and town were never destroyed during the Great War, the forest never burned. The local Landen males are universally trained as militia, the Blood males as their officers. With 96% of this District being Landen, All Jeweled blood within this District are trained by the Quvopa Court, and employed by them unless they receive permission to transfer to a different court. Even the Jewelless Blood are carefully cultivated and employed. It has not occurred to the Augustinus family to change the traditions they have lived by for 50,000 years, even Queen's are scarce and Blood so few that Landen hold some prominent positions in the area.

And that refusal to change could end up having bitter consequences for the entire family.

Maerina, like her family, is so accustomed to the unquestioned receipt of the privileges and respect due her birth that she is almost unconscious of the assumptions and prejudices that define them. In her family, Class boundaries are closely held too, with even a purebred Landen Hayllian being deemed more worthy than a Blood from another Territory. Mixed breeds, of any Caste or Jewel strength, are quietly encouraged to remove themselves from Hayll, and a fund is kept to allow them to set up comfortably anywhere but here.

Her family do not require or wish aid, and despise change. They are greatly relieved that slowly their Territory is returning to the traditions it held before the Purge and Great War, but are too far removed from the Draega to truly understand the dangerous rumbles of rebellion and war coming from the capital. And they are distant enough culturally to not fully believe the rumors of the brutal oppression and cruelty prevalent in other Hundred Family domains.

Their largest current political tie is that they were amongst those who invested in and funded the rebuilding of the coliseum, for it is an important cultural landmark, and restoring it to the glory days before the Great War a proof to both Mother Night and the Askavi that Hayll cannot be dominated.

Quvopa is of particular importance to Maerina as she was born there, at the heart of her family's power, only months after the Purge. She feels the burden, each Winsol, as her family recalls the Price that was paid to bring her safely into the world. Two relatives Broken, two dead, trying to shield the pregnant Queen who bore her. And then her mother Broke her own Offering, in a grief-driven attempt to aid, feed and Emotionally Heal her people. The young Healer privately despises Witch, and Winsol provokes a sort of desperate fervor, soothed only by the peace of Communion and the guidance of her oldest sister, Caelissine. Yet the fact that the Purge drove the despised Eyrien invaders away is often considered, at least in her family, as an acceptable Price. Far, far more of their relatives had died in the Great War and following Occupation than had in the Purge. And so she bears also the mark on her soul of the peace bringer, a solace to her family and symbol of hope even in the darkest of days.

Maerina feels deeply the Price of her life, and has striven always to be worthy of the great wounds suffered on her behalf. She moves through her privileged life in a state of grace, able to Heal whom she wills without worry about cost, or providing a living. She serves in her mother's Court, though not yet as High Healer or even First Circle; she is far, far too young, scarcely deemed able to make legal decisions on her own.

Both her Birthright Ceremony and Offering were overseen by her beloved sister; the gentleman chosen for her Virgin Night chosen by that wise counselor as well. Unlike most Hayllians, her sister's service in the Temple was deeply spiritual. That centers the Augustinus family in an unusual way, but is yet another social divide between them and the land of their birth. Caelissine does not serve full time at home, though she has many times been offered High Priestess. Instead, she prefers to live in Draega, though whether that is true preference or a desire to protect the family interests Maerina could not say.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

Maerina Varinia Quvopa Quarta Augustine's-Agrippina made an effort to always look her best. She found it far, far less nerve wracking to always be ready for a surprise visit from her mother or other notable, than to be caught off guard. Yet at the moment the pure, abyssal black of her hair was obscured by a truly hideous amount of raw, power-infused blood. Her flawless skin was spattered not merely with more of that odd blood, but also with bits of bone and marrow, and she could feel the horrid imprint of each and every speck of filth. Her softly golden eyes, shimmering with power and intent, lowered.

Her patient, however flawed, did not need to be the target of her rage and disgust. No, that was for the defiling and heretical Askavi Warlord who had dared to father her. The soft, meant-to-be-soothing murmurs of her patient's mother grated on nerves already raw from the shear effort of what she had attempted. Maerina's jaw clenched, and a wash of Craft locked that woman's mouth shut. The silence soothed, and even her patient visibly relaxed. Because no matter how wise the course her patient's mother suggested, no one at all would ever want to leave Hayll.

Maerina allowed a second wash of power to Cleanse the external taint from both herself and her patient. She felt a pull, a tang of power ... if only she had the correct skills, she might truly, actually excise the hated Eyriene blood from the unfortunate patient before her, and restore to her to all she might have been. Yet though that particular desire had coursed through her veins since the very first half-breed had come to her, begging for help, she had never managed it.

But then, until today, this Healing Maerina had just completed had been deemed impossible, as well. So perhaps her desire to cleanse mixed breeds might one day come true, as well. She used Craft to nudge her patient to the right, and carefully examined the now-flawless expanse of skin. No scar marred her shoulders, no ragged or uneven growth of bone showed where the missing wings had once been. Neither did those odd, double-faced shoulder plates reveal the truth of their function; to the eye or simple touch, the patient was no longer deformed.

Good; Maerina was done here. Her Coachman would give the pair a purse of coins, and see them away from here. Far, far away.

Without speaking a word to either the patient or the patient's mother, Maerina glided peacefully into her inner sanctum, and became violently ill into the waste basin therein. She shook, and tears threatened, though not even she could say if it was triumph or horror that coursed through her soul.
