Personality

Personality:

Cassica was once a student of obtaining instant gratification, whether it meant foregoing seduction in favor of a quick tryst or avenging an insult on the spot.  Two millennia of existence tempered this Black Widow into a deeper thinker and someone who can enjoy not just the final results of a good strategy, but the thrill of the chase as it occurs. Cassica is not a woman to sit still and accept what life hands her, however: the only things that one receives in life are those that they reach out and take, even at the expense of others.

The Tenebrosi Iarvis refined this desire, creating a woman who can define what she’s after, followed by locating the people who can provide it to her, whether by their own design or being brought around to her way of thinking.

This mindset is the root of her initial training as a courtesan and prostitute, drawing her to the study of the mind its influence on the body, as well as how one mind can affect others. Seduction begins in the mind long before two people arrive in the bedchamber. She still appreciates the importance of the physical: Cassica craves contact and tactile experiences. Whether it’s the feel of a silk on her skin, the touch of a lover, excellent food and wine, she enjoys finding and savoring new sensations. Even pain is something to be revered, because without pain one cannot experience pleasure.

In dealing with her prey, poisons are good for some, but Cassica prefers to alter a target’s thoughts and perceptions to suit her needs. Everything from the sound of her voice, her method of dress, and even the set of her shoulders is designed to provoke a number of responses that she alters based on the person she’s speaking with. The angry receive someone who receives that anger and seeks the root of it, even while she explains that they have every right to it. The fearful find a confidant who listens and offers gently solicited advice that feeds their fears. Cassica strives to be a canvas that anyone can paint upon and thereby see what they want to see.

And in showing people what they want to see, she influences them on deeper levels to carry out her designs.

These traits have made her a more thorough and deeper thinking Black Widow backed by ages of experiences in the study of Landen and Blood nature. Mind webs subtly gnaw upon the less flattering facets of her enemies’ personalities, bringing those facets to the fore and isolating them from their allies. When they are alone and at their darkest, she arrives to offer hope and a friendly ear, thereby indebting her targets to her wisdom and making them more pliable to her desires.

Likes:

  • 1. Working with the Mind: Cassica is fascinated by the workings of the Blood mind and, to a lesser extent, the Landen. Shaping thoughts, impulses, and experiences fascinates her. Her patients receive extensive time to discuss their issues while Cassica learns what makes them tick.

  • 2. Cooking: She is no Hearth Witch, but Cassica enjoys cooking small dinners for the few people whose company she enjoys. She still remembers many of her parents recipes from her childhood and has perfected them through years of trial and error.

  • 3. Children:  A child's laughter is music to Cassica's ears. A mother of several children over the course of her long life, few things delight her more than a baby’s scent or watching little ones build sandcastles by the sea. She envies the short-lived mothers she’s met over the years, for so many of them will never know the agony of birthing and burying the best parts of themselves.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Hot/Humid Weather: Cassica hates sweating. Her lack of skill with cooling craft has meant enduring one uncomfortable summer after another almost everywhere but her native Cirta.

  • 2. Disrespect of those who serve: She has the bearing of an aristo, but Cassica didn't start life that way. Her formative years before her caste manifested were spent in working in her parents restaurant, followed by being the personal cupbearer to a aristo couple. This is where she learned to listen, put aside her desires, and focus on the desires of another person. A shame that so many Aristos miss these lessons. She despises people who treat servants poorly, railing at them for every issue under the sun. A gentle correction often serves better than sharp, physical rebuke.

  • 3. The Hundred Families: Permanent wealth. Permanent power. Permanent indolence and corruption. The Hundred Families represent the worst of Hayll and its people, despite their blathering to the contrary. They waste their money on the Colosseum and their decadent pastimes while those outside their bubble scrape and claw for what they can get. A few of the families are worthy of respect, but the other ninety-seven can burn for all she cares.

    Fears:

  • 1. The Destruction of Hayll - Askavi did grave harm to Terreille and they saved their special brand of evil for Hayll. Despite their worst attacks, however, they never destroyed Hayll. They raped her people and slaughtered her children, but they did not destroy her homeland. Yet they came close. Hayll is vulnerable and Cassica fears that the next enemy that attacks Hayll will succeed wherever the Eyriens failed.

  • 2. Eyriens: Cassica fears the Eyriens on a primal level. Every great and notable thing about Hayll meant nothing when their war machine conquered her people’s lands. She helped with the great working that forced inflicted grievous harm on the women and children of Askavi.  Even birds in the sky bother her because their shadowed, winged forms remind her of being attacked from above.

  • 3. Mental Domination: Cassica manipulates the minds and thoughts of others while living in terror of another doing the same to her. She researches and tests Craft applications built to protect her mind from tampering and to counterattack those who would do so. Right or wrong, good or evil, her actions are, and have always been, her own. So will it remain.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Fine Telekinetic Craft: Cassica spent her formative years working in a restaurant where excellent service wasn’t merely desired, but expected. She often felt like she needed more hands to keep up. Salome’s training forced her to alter her perceptions and develop this craft. Cassica can move six objects independently of her arms with deep precision. This allows her to, dictate her thoughts and write them, lift and throw a knife, or weave her webs quickly and accurately.

  • 2. Widow’s Webs: Cassica’s earliest lessons with Salome focused on the various webs a Black Widow can weave and their conventional applications. Cassica spent her free time practicing unconventional applications for her webs to add versatility to her craft while working with the Tenebrosi Iarvis.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Travel Craft: Even in the centuries before the Purge, Cassica's strength with Travel Craft was abysmal. The Yellow Wind is the highest wind she can fly; otherwise, she's better off in a coach with someone who can operate on one of the few winds still intact. While this has allowed her to see much of Terreille in a way that most people haven't, it's nonetheless an extreme issue in terms of time spent traveling.

  • 2. Cooling Craft: Years spent living near the cooler coastal regions of Hayll spoiled Cassica. She didn't bother to learn much about cooling Craft because she didn't need it. Now that she's spending time in a place where hot and dry weather is the norm, she is paying for her oversight.

    History:

Cassica Laertes was born to Dario and Simona Laertes 2400 years before the purge in Cirta, Faro, Hayll. Dario worked as barrel making for a large vineyard while Simona worked as a chef. The pair had little but were very much in love. Dario loved finding the best trees to make his casks and he spent many days hard at work, trying to gather the money to buy his family a plot of land where he could start his own business in earnest. Simona could make an excellent meal out of meager ingredients and her skill with a needle kept their clothing in excellent repair even if it was a few years behind the current fashions. When Cassica arrived, the proud parents showered her with love. Many of Cassica’s fondest memories are the small sips of wine that her father allowed her during his work, or the where she sat down to dinners with her family, the smallest of meals feeling like a feast when combined with the love between the three of them. The dinner for her Birthright Ceremony was fresh crab from the coast, a delicacy rarely enjoyed in their home.

Cassica knows that her Tiger Eye was a blessing from Mother Night, but she likes to tell herself that the seafood had something to do with it.

Growing older, Cassica’s parents included her in their plans when they opened a small restaurant in the city. The young woman learned to pour wine with a steady hand, learned how to pair wines with different meats, and the proper way to stitch a tablecloth. The money came quickly and their repeat customers often noted Cassica’s transition to a young ingenue into a beautiful teen approaching the spring of her beauty. The appearance of her snaketooth worried the young woman even more than the abrupt shifts in mood that preceded it. She told her parents and the trio visited a local Black Widow, Salome Accorsi, who frequented their restaurant in the company of her husband, Troius Accorsi. Troius desired Cassica as a lover, despite her young age. Salome, for her part, saw a new apprentice to teach, one who would have further use than merely as her husband’s bedmate (though she did not mind indulging him).

Sunrise brought hours of training in reading, writing, math, and refining the food service skills she learned under her parents. Lunch was a hasty affair where Cassica had barely enough time to visit her parents before rushing back to Salome’s home for training with illusion webs and compulsion craft stretching into the late afternoon. Nights were spent serving dinner to Troius and Salome while they discussed the events of the day. It was here that Cassica first learned of the wider world she lived in, hearing more and more about the other Territories of Terreille.

Her Offering gifted her with the Summer Sky and her Virgin Night occurred shortly after the Ceremony, performed by Troius, leading to the start of an affair between the two shortly after. She also engaged in an affair with Salome. When the pair invited her to dinner one evening and began discussing it, Cassica admitted that she loved them both; if forced to choose, she would not. She didn’t know if she meant it, but she never had to find out: Troius and Salome laughed and revealed that they would not force her to choose, nor would they let her go. The relationship between the trio was always about the three of them, with Cassica began an equal partner and lover to both. Cassica was the focus of several of Troius’s Ruts over a few centuries, but it was her relationship with Salome that evolved enough for the older woman to share deeper secrets with her.

It was no accident that her parents brought her to Salome for training as a Black Widow. Salome had foreseen long ago that Cassica would be her apprentice. It posed no difficulty to frequent their restaurant and watch the young woman mature until the time for her teachings began. Salome further revealed that it was time for Cassica to take the next steps in her training and to become her true companion in more of a sense than just satisfying their mutual physical needs.

But only if she could pass a test.

You will make your parents leave Faro without the use of Craft. Do this and you will be ready.

Cassica agonized over the idea. Her parents were successful and wealthier than they had been when she was a child. They were even considering having another child. Hurting them felt wrong but she hungered after the opportunity that Salome offered her. In the end, Cassica knew that the only way to succeed was to strike at what they loved most: their restaurant.

A place with a reputation for excellent service, better food and camaraderie slowly morphed into a substandard establishment. Once award-winning cuisine now routinely made customers ill. Competent workers found private contracts with wealthy families work while less reliable workers served poorly, when they even bothered to report to work. Dario and Simona fought to turn things around, but when young bravos brought their fights to the restaurant business suffered. The fickle aristos who once spoke her parents praises now slandered them to their friends. Cassica, already soured on the aristos through their other dealings, began to hate them, especially those who numbered among Hayll’s Hundred Families . Business floundered and reversed her parents’ fortunes. Reputations shattered, Dario and Simona Laertes packed their things and headed far to the north to start again. Along the way, they realized that their daughter had become a plaything of the aristos; she was too accustomed to the “good life” and had forgotten where she came from. They left her behind in disgust.

Salome comforted Cassica through her heartbreak.

"Do not worry, my perfect companion. This, too, shall pass."

Though Cassica’s training was interrupted with the births of her twin daughters, Salome offered her continuing opportunities to hone her craft. Three centuries after meeting the Cassica, Salome considered her trustworthy enough to even discuss the Tenebrosi Iarvis. One century later, she consider Cassica worthy of training, though she did not actually explain the whole of the Tenebrosi Iarvis until six months prior to her confirmation. Cassica learned that Salome’s true name was Invicta, meaning the Unconquered One. Cassica chose her true name, Hetaera, and accepted her mask. She bore two more sons in the centuries following, even as the Eyriens began the preparations for their war against the rest of Terreille. Salome left for long periods in the service of the Iarvis, allowing Cassica to hone her skills while Troius maintained his family’s Senate and place of power in the Hundred Families.

Her children grew old and Cassica grew restless as Troius found other lovers to seduce. Invicta had not returned after two centuries of work; Ignoto assigned Cassica to locate mentor in her last known location in Dhemlan, Terreille. Much of Dhemlan was hot and oppressive, leading to a life-long dislike of hot and humid weather. It was here that she met the Eyriens for the first time. Their savagery terrified her and prevented her from continuing the search for Invicta as she aided the Dhemlanese against their Eyrien oppressors.

Returning to Hayll, Cassica reported all that occurred. She also birthed to Troius final sons as the Eyriens sacked Raej. She celebrated her eldest daughter’s marriage to a naval captain and the births of her first grandchildren. But sorrow followed soon after when her eldest daughter’s family was slain by the Eyriens in Dhemlan. The war against the Eyriens was now deadly personal.. She went to Dena Nehele to provide information on the Eyriens to an Iarvis member there, only to encounter the Askavi war machine as they arrived. Narrowly escaping, she returned to Hayll, where she agreed to help with a working meant to cripple Askavi and end the Great War.

The deaths of their women and children slowed the Askavi advance but did not halt it. More disturbing was the number of children slain in the attack. While she hated the Eyriens, the murder of children absolved her of any moral high ground she held prior to the attack.  From that point, she would not involve children if ever she could prevent it. Hayll would throw back the Eyrien advance. They were better equipped, civilized, and more skilled. Their Queen would fight to death for her people.

She was wrong and three more of her children paid the price.

Disguised as a Priestess, she was captured by an Eyrien unit that sacked Cirta. She prepared herself to die, but was shocked when an Eyrien warrior murdered his unit as they tried to goad him into raping her. The ensuing fight left him wounded and at Cassica’s mercy. Even today, she still doesn’t know why she let him survive. The wounded warrior flew west, away from the carnage and Cassica wonders if she made the right decision.

Her youngest son, Stefano, died with Troius, protecting her from the Purge with their jewels. Her parents were also slain by their oppressors. Troius’s family, lead by his brother Gaetano, carved up his estate and left her with no money. Invicta’s teachings, however, have made her far, far richer than money can measure. The Tenebrosi Iarvis are her people, even more than the Hayllians that spawned them. Perhaps someday she will avenge her family, but not before she avenges herself on the Accorsi family for their avarice. Her children were Accorsi, too, but they were denied the funerary rites owed to them and a place in the family tomb. The Hundred Families use their power to choke the life from Hayll, to step on those that they look down upon but never look down at.

Cassica Laertes has operated her tavern for ninety-nine years, covertly gathering information about the Accorsi family and its holdings. Someday soon, she will hurt the Accorsi family as they did her. It pains her to destroy Troius’ family, but they have earned this fate.

    Character in Play:

Cassica’s footfalls echoed softly in the ancient tunnel, the soft pat-pat-pat of her bare feet on the cold, rough stone. The robe she wore was slight and the tunnel's chill bit deep into her bones. Yet her steps did not falter nor did she attempt a warming spell. The first signaled weakness. The second was impossible. She couldn’t cool herself when Shalador’s heat nearly roasted the flesh from her bones. Warming herself against the chill was likewise imposible, but the admission of such a basic deficiency was weakness. It was enough that Cassica knew. It gave her a new goal to strive for, a benchmark against which she would measure her evolution.

For now, she followed her guide down the tunnel toward her destiny.

Do not speak unless spoken to. No questions. Remain standing in place unless directed.” the guide said. The voice issued from inside of a black cowl connected to flowing black robe. Shadows obscured the guide’s face where even Witchlight could not penetrate. Those masks were the true faces of her chosen people, to whom her ties were even deeper than the Hayllian blood in her veins. Following one step behind her guide, Cassica spoke even as she willed her teeth not to chatter.

    I understand.

The hallway opened into a chamber that swallowed by liquid darkness. She hovered at the edge of the chamber in silence, peering into the inky blackness and trying to establish that she wasn’t alone. The chill in her bones that nipped at her heels now found her in one go and she couldn't stop gooseflesh from raising on her golden skin.

Extinguish your light. Trust the Darkness to guide you.” the guide said.

Cassica inhaled, exhaled, and dispelled her Witchfire, plunging the hall into Darkness. Gathering her resolved, she stepped forward into the shadows.

Something brushed against her feet in the Darkness, forcing her to move faster. Minutes passed as reason warred with fear inside her mind. Reason triumphed and she moved forward with more care given to her movements. When she stepped in error, the the brushing against her feet grew more insistent and Cassica adjust her course. Eventually, the stone beneath her feet changed in texture, becoming smooth and and somewhat warm.

    Undress.

Cassica unclasped her robe and dropped it to the floor, keeping hold of only the small cylinder in her left hand. She stood naked in the darkness for a seeming eternity before the first question came. They questioned her motives and her character. They asked her questions she’d never thought of and some that never left her mind. She answered them all, sometimes haltingly, other times with fluid grace. Dim light appeared before her and Cassica made out a handful of shapes arranged in a ring around her. Some wore masks that she could see. Others simply had faces made of pure shadow that shifted in accordance with the light. The questions continued, seemingly for hours, before someone else spoke from the darkness.

    She is ready.

A glint of steel flashed in the darkness and, for a brief moment, Cassica Laertes visibly shivered in fear. Yet the voice in her mind brushed at her inner barriers even as she felt several others pressing at them, some more insistent, more powerful than others. Steel slid along flesh and an animal bleated a final cry.

    Repeat the words you hear.

She recited her oath, then drank from the chalice offered to her. Blood passed her lips and it took the whole of her will not to choke upon it. She drank and drank until the chalice was empty, then felt knife slice her right wrist. Someone grasped her wrist and the chalice, held her wrist over it until it was half-filled.

Welcome, Sister, to our ranks. Show us your face.

Cassica unfurled the web and spread it over her face, allowing it to obscure her features completely. She had no eyes, no mouth. Her face was simply gone.

    Tell us your name.

    Tell us who you are.

Images flashed through Cassica’s mind. The years spent serving customers in her parents’ restaurant. The nights spent in bed between Troius and Salome, both hungry for her flesh. Years spent serving them, listening quietly as they discussed events in the realm as though she was nothing more than a common serving girl. More time spent standing at the side of greater powers, a reflection of the light yet never the source.

All the time spent unnoticed and rarely regarded as she watched and learned. Studied and experimented. Smiled and seduced. Weaved and waited. Always the apprentice, never the master.

    Until now.

Do not worry, my perfect companion. This, too, shall pass.

Cassica stood tall in the dim light, looking at each member of the Tenebrosi Iarvis that she could see. She spoke in the Old Tongue to prove her command of the language.

    My name is Hetaera.
