Diamonds And Dominance Are A Girl's Best Friend
« on: Apr 20, 18, 01:54:04 PM »
Approximately twelve days after Lydia had visited Leif Tostain’s establishment to commission his craftsmanship, there came a letter via courier that the pieces were ready and Prince Tostain could deliver them, as requested, to the Kalas estate at the Priestess’s convenience.

Lydia fingered the parchment with a long, probing expression. Far too long of a moment for a woman of her stature to occupy when thinking of a lowly male like him. There was something about him that intrigued her and she now had a moment to puzzle it out. She was, perversely, attracted to the long haired Prince, but not the same attraction she held towards a mature male like her own Prince Kain. It held the flavor of fleeting, novelty, and as Lydia let the moment linger, she envisioned what it would be like to dominate the evasive Prince, to have him begging for her.

Perhaps a remnant unfulfilled of her battle with Eclipse, when her dominance and Craft were thwarted? Perhaps that was why. Kain had always been both properly submissive and properly dominant...when allowed. And that was how their relationship went: she was the ascendant personality and he was only allowed to rise above her when she deigned.

It had worked excellently so far.

Casting aside her adulterous thoughts, labeling them as the product of boredom and pride, Lydia set aside the correspondence and sent a thread to her loyal butler, Niko, to inform the courier that she had an opening at ten in the morning two mornings from then to receive the jeweler. Characteristic to Niko, he would also inform the courier to relay the emphasis that the High Priestess was a very busy woman and to not waste her time by being truant or absent.

The courier left with this information and Lydia went back to her work without another thought of fair jeweler.

How he fucking hated Dark Jewelled clients.  Some of their best business dealings were with these people.. and he still hated working with them.  They were moody shits, and just as likely to do something rude and against Protocol as they were to ignore him.

He'd prefer they do the latter - but in this client's case?  He knew better than to hope for that.  Lydia fucking Kalas had eyed him like a fat cat eyeballing a juicy mouse.  But at least this time his sister was staying at the store.  At least this time he didn't have to worry about those greedy eyes setting their sights on a sweet soul.

He could do the Protocol dance with Lydia Kalas.  He was excellent with it, with the intricate steps and making sure he did everything right.  It wouldn't necessarily save him if she decided to do something cruel - but at least he could genuinely say he'd done everything he could.

Everything except swallow the poison of the twisted Faith the woman represented, anyways... but unless she forcefully ripped her way into his head she wouldn't know that.  And as she didn't have his control ring?  Well that wouldn't happen.  Thank the fucking Darkness, because he had the feeling he'd fall dead in a half-breath if she ever got a look inside his skull.

He'd taken himself straight to her estate, a full half hour before the appointment time.  Better to be a little early and wait than to risk the Priestess' ire.  He also knew her ego would be massaged and sated by the idea of making a lowly Light Jewelled soul wait for her majestic ass.

He'd dressed well, of course.  Ensured that his suit was crisp, pressed, and well tailored.  He'd also left his hair down.  It wasn't traditional.  He didn't care.  There were no 'rules' about that - and so he'd leave it down.  His own little public rebellion against the chains that were wound so tight against him he sometimes felt he couldn't breathe.

Instead of pacing, as he felt like doing, he'd settled into a comfortable chair in the room that he'd been told to wait within.  His fingers had pressed together beneath his chin, eyes half closed as he waited out the intervening minutes.  Let some think he might be contemplating the 'glory' that her patronage conferred.  He wasn't.  He was contemplating how best to get his sister a better life.

How to get her out from under the thumb of his mother, and away from those like Lydia Kalas.  Smuggling wasn't an option - there was just no way for him to be able to pull it off.  But maybe.. maybe he could find someone less cruel?  He'd heard that the Priestess' sister was a Queen - and from the sounds of it, there were worse people to serve.

Perhaps he could write the Queen Kalas and request.. what?  That his brilliant sister help keep her court clean?  He barely held that sigh back.  Something would come up.  He was certain of it.  He just.. had to keep an eye open.

Even though her butler had informed her that the jeweler had arrived not only at the proper time but early, Lydia continued to do her work until approximately fifteen minutes before their meeting time. At that moment, she paused, inhaling with practiced mindfulness, and arranged her desk (though it truly did not need arranging) into a more presentable state, clearing a place right in front of her and concealing the papers that had her business written on them from prying or curious eyes.

Ten minutes before their meeting, Niko -- treasured and impeccable as always -- delivered refreshments in anticipation. The barest warmth of approval brushing against his mind came from Lydia as he left. He served her so well. They all did. Lydia’s household ran like clockwork, an abode of Protocol and the Dark Religion. Pristine and untouchable.

Five minutes before their meeting, a servant brought Prince Tostain into Lydia’s study. The High Priestess of Ivalo gave the jeweler a prim and polite smile, rising from her desk and rounding it with the slow, graceful surety of a dancer. She wore a slim fitting black and white dress that showed her shapely calves and fine ankles. Her golden hair was gently curled, its waves arcing around her face and beyond her shoulders. Balanced perfectly atop her black heels, she paused as Leif entered, the expression on her face mysteriously and slightly pleased. “Prince Tostain,” she greeted with chilly neutrality. He was dressed well, for a simple delivery, but it was as she expected. And she approved of him just a little bit more.

With a gentle toss of her hair, she motioned towards the seating available. “Please, have a seat,” she said. “May I offer you something to drink?” There was obviously tea and water on the table that would be between them, plus some finger sandwiches. For a supposedly simple delivery, this looked awfully like something that would take far longer than that.

Lydia had, of course, planned it that way.

She liked watching him squirm. Or try not to. It was...so deliciously gratifying.

She did not make him wait past his appointed time - that was something that was both pleasing and slightly alarming.  The only time he'd ever known a Dark Jewelled... Anyone.. To not make someone like himself or his sister wait at least another half hour was when they planned on enjoying themselves at him or his sister's expense.

It wasn't something he enjoyed.

But as with every time it had happened - he always had that hope that perhaps it was a sign of respect.  Or, if he was just slightly fortunate, it would be a sign that the unpleasantness would end quickly in some fashion or another.  He wasn't sure what he would prefer right now.

If Lydia Kalas showed him respect, he would know that his life was likely over - at least in the fashion in which he lived and found some small form of happiness.  It would mean that she did something he truly  did not want her to do - she would notice him as more than a Jeweler and approach his family.  Something he'd rather avoid.

And if she simply wanted to make his life uncomfortable?  It would be more time spent with the frigid bitch, constantly reminding himself to keep a Protocol-Neutral expression and dance a dance that - while he was quite good at it - he despised.

So he gave her his bow, keeping his eyes just slightly lifted to keep her in his field of view before straightening and tugging on his cuffs to straighten them out after such a maneuver.  "<I>Priestess</I> Kalas."  If there was a faint hint of heat in that voice, she'd likely assume it was in response to her loveliness.  Let her assume it was that.  He had, after all, done the polite thing of looking over her attractive figure when she presented herself.

To not do so might invite worse.  To not react would undoubtedly cause trouble.  TO do more than put a little heat in his voice would also cause trouble - and unless she went peeking, she couldn't 'know' for sure that the heat wasn't lust.

Also something he'd had practice managing.  His eye turned back towards the table, and if she expected a twitch of annoyance she would not get it. Such a set up meant a longer visit -  to him that meant she was not going to try to 'keep' him, only annoy the hell out of him.  He could handle that.

"A little water would be pleasant, Lady Kalas.  I have already eaten, however."  That wasn't entirely true - he'd eaten one pastry on his way out the door.  But she didn't need to know that, and he wasn't going to drink her damned tea or eat her damned sandwiches.  Not unless she made him do so, anyways.  The less time he spent here, the better.

"Your time is precious, and your hospitality impeccable.  To avoid unnecessary delays, I would be more than happy to show you the pieces you purchased now if you would like, though I will understand if you wish to partake of your repast first."

Polite.  Even that faint hint of heat had disappeared as if it had never been, his hands folding lightly across his lap as he sat in her chair looking at her.  Through her, almost.  Like an obedient dog who simply wanted her to get her attempts at entertainment over with.  <I>Sit. Stay.  Good boy.</I>

He could imagine her purring such words over any object that happened to have dangly bits - dog, cat.. Blood Male.  Hopefully her getting married would keep her out of his hair.  A male could dream.

His bow was Protocol-perfect, his mannerisms acceptable of a (mostly) subservient male, and it made Lydia smile just a bit more. When he said he would take water, she poured it for him with the deftness of someone used to entertaining guests and the grace of someone who understood that sort of entertainment as an art form. Even though he had refused something to eat, there would, nonetheless, be something consumable offered, because to do otherwise would be a slight to her guest and reflect poorly on her hospitality.

Inwardly, she was highly amused that he thought the reason for her drawing out this meeting was so that she could merely eat in front of him. What simplicity he hid behind! How...quaint.

“How kind of you,” she politely oozed even as she picked up a small morsel to nibble on. “But I would not waste your time with such mundane matters,” she added after delicately biting into the tart captured by her perfectly manicured nails. “No, we are waiting upon a third party to arrive -- someone whose opinion I hold in high regard.” Even if he wasn’t interested in fancy items at all and had left the majority of the details regarding the wedding in her care.

No, Lydia was doing this next part just to see Prince Tostain’s reaction.

On a Blood Opal thread to her beloved, she said, **My dear Prince, would you come to my office for just a moment? I would like your opinion on a gift.**

And then, the summons to her darling dangerous Prince sent, Lydia smiled at Leif like a shark scenting blood in the water. “He should be here shortly. I do apologize for the wait.” She waved her hand towards the tarts, insisting that he should reconsider his earlier decision. “Please, help yourself.” Her eyes lingered upon him momentarily over the rim of her cup as she sipped at her own tea. Unless Prince Tostain dragged up some anxious conversation, Lydia would remain the picturesque model of quiet patience, delicately nibbling away at food and drink, while she waited for Kain.

For once, Kain wasn’t outside with his bow or preparing his weapons.

He was in his office when the mail arrived that morning. Lydia’s butler arrived with the letter while Kain was sorting through some overdue correspondence from several people. Letters from his parents, missives from people he’d known growing up, and even a letter from one of his cousins in the south, near Viratt. He’d enjoyed that letter and written back to her with a rare smile on his face, deciding that he should take Lydia to Viratt at some point to the meet the rest of his family. Kain had his mother and father and he respected them. He even loved them, in his own way. But if they both fell over and died tomorrow, Kain would move on with his life without batting an eye.

Correction.

He’d shed a tear for his mother. She was his first Priestess and the first deity he worshipped before he learned of Mother Night.

Correspondence from his fellow Summits was treated with greater respect and a keener eye. His former trainer and mentor was offering Kain a job to find a Black Widow who’d escaped her family, but not before having her sister smuggled out by the Underground. The missive made Kain’s blood boil, even as the room chilled. When read the name of the family in question, Kain blinked twice.

Danielsen.

Yvetta’s surname was Danielsen. And she’d mentioned a pair of sisters, cousins really, that she’d grown up with before coming to serve in Lydia’s home.

**My dear Prince, would you come to my office for just a moment? I would like your opinion on a gift.**

Kain rose and straightened his tie. He put on his black blazer and left his office, note forgotten...for now.

His Priestess needed him.

Kain knocked the door to her office two minutes later and then opened it to find Lydia in the presence of male he didn’t know. Kain nearly crossed the room to gouge out the man’s eyeballs for looking at his woman, but stayed his hand. Lydia was enjoying a pastry, clearly not afraid or intimidated by the Warlord Prince before her. Kain walked over to Lydia and stood beside her, waiting for her to guide the conversation. Affection could wait until after the man, known hereafter as the Interloper, left this house.

The Interloper had a glass of water, but no food, though it was clearly available.

Hello, my lady.” he said, his tone warm, even reverent, as he stood beside the High Priestess of Ivalo. He loved that dress on her. His eyes roamed over her body slowly, eyeing her cleavage and her legs. He wanted to bend her over her desk today. Or his desk. Or over any flat surface they could find. Kain wasn’t picky. Fucking Lydia was a holy, heady thing, but he wa prevented from doing so by this interloper presence. Lydia’s screams belonged to him and the longer this man stood in their presence, the more Kain’s tempered simmered in its cold rage.

Who is your guest?” Kain asked, looking to the Interloper. He smiled through his graying beard at the man but did not offer his hand to shake, preferring to fold them before him. A heavy silver ring was visible on Kain’s right ring finger, etched with three X’s. Few in Glacia were utterly ignorant of the Midnight Keepers or their most fearsome branch, the Summit. Kain had no need to say anything further, really. If Lydia wanted this man’s eyeballs to roll like dice across her desk, she had only to say the word.

The presence of the new male in the room was.. aggravating.  Mostly because he could sense the Jewel they shared.  But where Leif's was his Darkest, this male had it as a Birthright.  Leif turned his attention to the male anyways, keeping his own emotions bottled tight, shielded and invisible to those in the room.  Well, so long as they didn't go breaking his shields down, anyways.

The Priestess, he was fairly certain, would need a reason to do it.

The male?  That was more unpredictable.  So he inclined his head, dipping low enough to acknowledge the Darker male appropriately, though not nearly as much as he had for Lydia.  That was only proper.  It was in that head dip, where his eyes remained up, that he saw the ring on Kain's finger.  It took willpower to keep from narrowing his gaze, or from flinching.  It took willpower to treat Kain as he would any other Dark Jewelled client.

But if he had been wanting to get this done and over with before, now it was even more so.  A Warlord Prince, Dark in nature, who worked for the Summit?  Yeah.. not his idea of a good time.  Still, he gave a polite smile.

"An honor to meet you, Prince.  I am Leif Tostain, here to deliver the pieces the Lady Kalas ordered from my family's business two weeks ago."

With the presence of Lydia's requested guest, however, he conjured the pieces that Lydia had commissioned.  They were currently hidden in their boxes, one of which was a brilliant and flawless white.  The others were done in softer creams.. her maids' bracelets, of course.

He didn't move to open those boxes, but he did set them on the desk.  He knew better than to simply open them.  The Priestess' Escort would likely wish to ensure they contained no danger - which naturally, they did not.

He wanted this appointment over with.  He wanted to never have to lay eyes on Kalas again, and especially not her Summit monster.  Somehow, he had the feeling that was a vain hope.  Still - he could dream that this meeting would not take too much longer.

The white box, meant for the bride and Priestess before him, held a bracelet made of Gold.  Engraved on the bracelet were delicate lines of winter roses, each petal done in the finest shavings of Ruby that he could get his hands on.  The appearance, over all, was something dreamy and fantasy-laden.  It would make her seem.. more delicate.. than she truly was; though the thickness of the gold band would make it clear she was also strong, capable.  It wasn't too thick - just thick enough to ensure that those looking knew what they were dealing with.

He had even laid diamond dust in some of the thicker engravings, meant to draw the eye and enrapture the senses.  A small bit of Craft spell, but nothing that would be too obvious.  Very subtle, really, in the way it was meant to bring attention to the wearer.

The other bracelets were smaller.  Thinner.  One was engraved with artful renditions of birds, the edges of the feathers done in opaline dust while rubies crusted the eyes and talons.  The other was done in an artistic filigree that would remind those paying attention of the weaving of a web, delicate drops of ruby on the engraved lacing to resemble dewdrops.

When Lady Kalas had said what she'd wanted, she'd said she wanted identical pieces.  He had promptly told her he didn't do identical.. and he'd meant it.  But he'd ensured that from a distance, they looked so similar that people might think they were identical.. and only on close inspection would they realize that the pieces were familial, but not identical.  A triplicate set, to tie three females together while also allowing each of them their identities.

Each bracelet was capped near the center of the wrist with a larger Ruby, though the Priestess' was by far the largest and most clear.  The engravings all circled and centered that centerpiece, holding the Red as the best place of honor.  The other bracelets held slightly less clear, more clouded centers.  That was on purpose.

The bride, in this case, was supposed to be the center - the piece that drew the most attention. She was also the Priestess, and thus more clear of purpose in regards to the spirituality of their people.  Or at least, that was the response he would give if she bothered asking about the details.

In reality, he'd wanted to give her the more clear center jewel because he liked to think that her nature was clear - she was an arrogant bitch who thought her light-Jewelled cousins were less than her.  Both were true - he'd only speak of the one she would likely be pleased to hear though.

Protocol was both his prison.. and his safeguard.  So long as he did not make a mistake, theoretically, these two sharks couldn't touch him.

When Kain entered the room, the temperature dropped a few degrees the moment he noticed the other male, and then rose for a moment while Lydia stood to greet with, “Ah, my Prince. Thank you for joining us.” She rested one perfectly manicured hand against his salt-and-pepper beard -- which was about as much affection as she was going to show her beloved in that company of others -- before returning to her seat to pick at her pastry. Kain took his rightful spot at her side, indicating that he was in her service.

Lydia inwardly crowed at the way her little jeweler Prince tried not to squirm as he introduced himself to the Summit Warlord Prince.

“Prince Tostain has graciously made those bracelets for my maids of honor that I was discussing with you the other night,” Lydia reminded Kain. Though she didn’t expect him to remember such mundane things, he usually did, only because they were details important to her and he thrived on details. “I was hoping you would give me your opinion on them, since one of them is going to my dear sister.”

In response, Leif withdrew the boxes containing the bracelets and then displayed them in front of the pair. Lydia appreciated even the containers they held them -- presentation was key, after all, and she did not miss the sparkling spray of fine gem dust made to capture the light. And, true to the jeweler’s word, they were not identical pieces, but from afar, it was hard to tell.

Without asking for his permission, Lydia used Craft to float the first one -- the one that would go to Miina, she realized after a moment -- closer to inspect. “Exquisite,” she declared without emotion after a critical silence. She floated the piece towards her mate for his opinion. “Did he not do a marvelous job, my Prince? What do you think my dear sister will say?”

Lydia knew that Kain knew she was toying with the male. She was testing him, trying to get him to break in some regard, and then she would bring down an avalanche upon him. She doubted Leif would be so stupid as to do so in front of her, in her seat of power, but it was certainly fun to play.

It also stirred another appetite within her that would be satiated once the jeweler Prince left. Lydia always made it worth Kain’s while to waste his time on things like this.

While Kain brusquely looked over the bracelet, Lydia inspected her own, floating it in front of her, slowly spinning it so that she could examine every aspect. When she found no imperfections worth commenting, she extended her slim wrist and floated the bracelet into Kain’s reach. “Put it on me, please, my Prince,” she commanded with a low, anticipatory purr to her voice.

Lydia’s touch was fleeting, like a sip of water given to a man who’d spent a thousand years in the desert. It filled every part of him, but it was gone to soon. He chafed at that absence, hunger in his gaze as his High Priestess returned to her seat. He wanted to pull her back to her feet, sit, and then pull her into his lap for more of the comfort that she provided to him. His gaze sharpened when it returned to other Warlord Prince. He was diverting Lydia’s attention from Kain, a situation that could not continue. It would be easier to kill him and then fuck Lydia right beside his still-cooling corpse in a pool of the man’s blood. But then he’d have to listen to Yvetta trying not to cry while she mopped up the blood and he’d listened to enough of that this morning when she was supposed to be fulfilling her other duties to him.

Kain hated crying, so Leif was allowed to live. For now.

Yes, I remember. I was starting to wonder if they’d ever be complete. But I understand the delay now. If a man doesn’t commit himself to putting forth his best effort, there’s no point in starting. Don’t you agree, Prince Tostain?” Kain asked. He sounded curious enough, even friendly, but Kain’s eyes focused on the other male, searching for any hint of his true feelings. Kain liked to take his time, especially when skinning something. The right knife had to be chosen and then every cut had to be made with purpose and foresight. Otherwise, one ruined the very skin they hoped to preserve and use in the future. A number of Landen trappers understood this, but some of the Blood were just too damned sloppy with their work to appreciate it.

He looked at Prince Tostain’s work and noted that the other man at least seemed to know his Craft. Mother Night had declared him unworthy, but she hadn’t made him an utter failure.

Small favors, Kain supposed.

Kain looked over the bracelet for Miina and whistled softly. “Well done, this one. Lady Miina will love it. She’s fond of pretty things. I daresay she’ll commission Prince Tostain for her own project based on this. You’ll be setting trends as usual, my lady.

*She’ll probably put him in her First Circle by year’s end once she sees this.*

Kain studied the other bracelets quietly, scanning them with his own senses to ensure that there were no surprises left by this inferior male. Kain didn’t think the man would be stupid enough to put his hand in the wolf’s mouth and then punch him in the throat, but...the Light Jeweled weren’t known for their prudence. Some were foolish enough to challenge the worthy and think themselves capable of winning.

Kain watched Lydia look over her own bracelet. He imagined the way the metal would feel on his back as Lydia’s nails dug into his shoulders and clawed their way down his back while he took her. It would probably feel very, very good. He was eager to find out. Lydia asked him to help her put it on, so Kain did just that. He fastened the clasp on the bracelet and then admired both the woman and the jewelry, a rare smile favoring her.

Yes, exquisite. Though I think it has more to do with the wearer than the piece. After all, even the best work that a man like Prince Tostain can muster means nothing in a box. It needs Glacia’s finest Priestess to make it truly shine.

What do you think, Prince Tostain?
” Kain asked, looking toward the other Warlord Prince.

Did he know he was being poked at, toyed with, and generally made an object of amusement by his Dark Jewelled 'superiors'?  Yes.  He wasn't stupid.  Compared to his 'father', they were downright gentle about their inferences.  Still, it didn't mean he liked it.  It didn't mean he was comfortable.

It didn't mean that there wasn't a thread of fear buried in his heart.  Not for himself, no.  They could do whatever they wanted to him - the fear was for his sister.

She wouldn't survive these two bastards.  They'd ruin her.  They would break her spirit, her soul, her heart and her flesh.  And like most Dark Jewelled souls in Glacia, they would likely be more than happy to dump her in a ditch and find their next toy in the box.

His sister was not a toy, and the idea that he might do something to get more of their attention and thus their interference bothered him.

So when Kain Eskola, his royal prickship, decided to make a snide remark about how much time it had taken to make the damned bracelets.. he said nothing.  He did not growl, or glare, or even flicker an eyelash.  Lydia Kalas had made sure that he knew he was not to finish the work early, and so he hadn't.  Kain Eskola could snarl, snap, and growl his attempts at making Leif flinch, but Kain Eskola was not the true threat in this room.  His leash was held by the Priestess at the desk.

If the worst that Eskola could do was to try to poke at his pride, then it would be a fine day.  So he simply pressed his fingers together, waiting for their judgements.

"If something must be done, it should be done to the best of one's ability, Prince Eskola."  He said it quietly, his eyes moving to settle on Kain's for a respectful moment, before moving back to the 'true' power in the room.

Frankly, he was just hoping to flatter the Priestess and get the hell out.  But let them both think he was being respectful, when really he just wanted to tell them to fuck off and never bother him again.  It wouldn't go well.  He knew it wouldn't go well.

So he didn't say it.

You'll be setting trends as usual, my lady.

No fucking Lydia Kalas would not be setting trends.  Leif would be setting the trends - but naturally no Light Jewelled Prince would be allowed to claim the credit.  That was fine.  It was safer.  Much safer.  He swallowed back the small flicker of pride, beating it into submission.

He was Glacian.  He was Light Jewelled.  He wasn't able to have pride. Pride would get him killed or worse.  Pride would have Analis delivered to people that would ruin her.  No, he needed to keep his calm.

The best work that a man like Prince Tostain can muster..

He turned his eyes towards Kain, narrowing them slightly.  Just a little.  He might fucking despise Lydia Kalas.. but he hadn't shirked on the work he had done for her order.  And something about that sentence rubbed him the wrong way.  He still didn't dare say a word about that emotion.  And for a moment, he didn't dare speak at all out of a sense of downright caution and common sense.

Pity that Eskola then seemed to prod at him, wanting an answer to yet more useless small talk.

"The Lady Kalas will outshine every star in Glacia's sky on the night of her Wedding, I'm sure.  That my offerings may assist brings my family pride."

It came out quietly, though he did not look at Lydia while he said it.  He thought she'd be lovelier as a bloody mess on the floor.  That too, he kept to himself.  "I am sure my parents will be happy to hear that the High Priestess of Ivalo and her Fiancee are satisfied with their order."

Now he turned his attention back to Lydia, dipping his head for a moment.  And then another.  Breathing in calm.  Forcing himself to remain as relaxed as he could while the Summit Monster breathed so close.

"Was there anything else, Lady Kalas?  This time of year the store can get fairly busy."  And I would hate to waste my time on mollifying your ego when the bracelets should be more than enough, you Red Jewelled bitch.

If Lydia showed any amusement towards Kain’s remark about Miina putting the little jeweler in her First Circle, it could only be seen in her eyes, which Kain was certain to be looking into just then. “I agree with you, my Prince,” she replied, to his audible comment about her sister quite probably commissioning Leif for her own pieces.

And when Leif offered his own, socially obligated comments, she favored him with a cool smile, a polite mask she wore to hide the predator underneath. She turned her wrist experimentally to make certain that the band did not cinch or restrain. It didn’t. As expected. It had a nice weight to it and she tested how it felt in motion as she glided towards the other boxes to hold them aloft again.

Our wedding,” she corrected Leif lightly. For even though she was the bride and held the highest honors of the day, it was still their wedding. “You will, of course, attend,” she said to Leif, turning that piercing gaze with its perfect mask of a smile his way. She made an elegant gesture with her hand and an invitation was called forth -- a creamy thick envelope with their combined seals in red and orange, smelling of some perfume. She floated it to him. “I absolutely insist,” she said with cool pleasantness and firm politeness. “For when word reaches my guests ears of who made these fine pieces, they’ll want to meet with the maker with haste.” A pause as she looked over one of the bracelets idly. “I suspect it will be a very...fortuitous night for you.” She was doing him a great favor, especially for a Light Jeweled, introducing him to such prestigious clients.

With a graceful flick of her wrist, the boxes all settled into a little line on the table, their inspection now complete. “Tell me, Prince Tostain,” Lydia said, her tone taking on the sharpness of one moving on to other business briskly. “Do you make weapons as well? Knives, to be specific.” She waited for his response with the stillness of a statue, not even the pulse in her neck betraying her.
