Appearance

Distinguishing Features:

Wulfryck is Tattooed over most of his chest, arms and back, however they are not easily seen.  They require Craft to make clear, or the active use of his Mind Delving skill, at which point they take on a Blood Opal glow.  He is, quite simply, covered in webs inked in to his skin in a mandala pattern.  Glowing, it almost appears like he is wearing an artistically applied skin tight shirt that curls down to his upper thighs and over his bottom, up to his collar line, front and back, and down to the first knuckles of either hand.  These were applied by the Midnight Keepers, to assist in his role as Rook.

Personality

Personality:

Wulfryck has an air of absolute confidence about him.  He was recruited from roughly the age of eighteen into the Midnight Keepers, and selected to be a Rook.  This, more than anything else, has shaped and molded the man that he became and continues to be.  His apparent fearless nature, or his recklessness, depending on who you talk to, is a result of both training and experience.  Wulfryck has not trained to be a Black Widow, but he has studied them extensively, and worked with them exclusively, and he cannot show any fear of them, nor any trepidation when these women worked their mysteries.  Fear will not keep them safe.  Fear will not pull a Black Widow from the Twisted Kingdom.  Overcoming his fears of the mysterious and the strange were among the first lessons he ever experienced, and after so many years, and so many Black Widow wards, he has seen and experienced so much that other experiences fail to inspire worry or concern in him.  He has gone where others dare not tread, and it lends him the sort of swagger that a lifelong adventurer might have, though some might say arrogance, whenever he is forced to interact with people that are not either Black Widows or Midnight Keepers.

Privately, Wulfryck has absorbed some of the behaviors of the Black Widow, particularly when it comes to explorations of sensuality.  He becomes a far more introspective and thoughtful man when he is alone, or alone with his ward.  He has seen a great many things thanks to the Twisted Kingdom, and he often takes the time to put those experiences in some kind of order in his mind.  He can be meditative, when doing so, but it is also an obvious part of him being a Prince.  He prefers organization and efficiency, when he can make those things happen, but he also understand that such things are not always possible.  So, he attempts to keep himself as organized and orderly, in mind and body, as possible--with the exception being his enjoyment of the sensual side of the Black Widow Caste.  He feels no particular natural urge for such things, but he has found it an enjoyable part of his life, which also means his work, as the Midnight Keepers are both lifestyle and occupation.

Wolf, as he is sometimes called, is not particularly religious.  His duties and training were not those of the Faith, at least not directly.  He believes in his duty to the order, and to the ward he has been assigned.  He understands both Blood Law and Protocol, and can and will adhere to them, but not without a fair measure of the confidence he typically displays.  He absolutely knows when someone outranks him in both Law and Protocol, but the lottery of birth and Offerings does not immediately command his respect.  He understands power, and when he is outclassed, but when one guards Dark Jeweled Black Widows from threats both external and internal, one is always aware when one is in danger.  If he is not afraid to protect his ward, why then would he be afraid just because someone his Darker, or even, much Darker, than he is?  Emotional decisions, whether that emotion is fear or love or hatred, are often poor decisions.  Wolf tries his very best to avoid poor decisions.

Likes:
  • 1 Black Widows; The more he learned about them, the more curious he became about them.  The more curious he was, the more he learned, and the more he came to like and appreciate the talents, skills and varied personalities of the Black Widow.  That they were woman, and sensual, did not hurt at all, but he is truly fascinated by the things they can do, and has trained to recognize their Craft, even though he cannot participate in it.
  • 2 Fishing; A rod, a reel, a quiet place with a body of water.  It is nice to take a moment of calm.  He enjoys danger, and the rush of risk, but every now and again, the orderly and calm nature of this activity appeals to him.  It is a meditation, in a way.  When he cannot fish, and needs to order his thoughts, he will sometimes tie flies to be used when he does get the chance to fish.
  • 3 Thrills; Black Widows are dangerous, and there is a rush when dealing with them, whether it is to protect them, restrain them, or pull them from the Twisted Kingdom.  Mountain climbing, a fight, a gamble, a grudge sparring match with a fellow Keeper, a wild night with a Black Widow or two, drinking Absinthe, or some Black Widow concoction.  Wolf enjoys excitement when he can find it, and he finds it in the course of his work fairly often.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Unprofessionalism; Wolf prides himself on his work, and doing it well, and he also enjoys enlightening himself, which means learning more about what he does and who he does it for.  Others do not take as much pride in their work.  People, be they escorts or craftsman, will often cut corners to get things done, or fail to learn how to do a job better.  Wolf is displeased when he comes across these individuals, and will avoid them if he can.
  • 2 Dark Religion’s Male Inferiority; This never made sense to him, and doesn’t sit right.  The Territory Court has a Circle of the Darkest Males he has ever heard of in his lifetime, or in recent history, and somehow they’re less than an Opal Witch?  He understand Protocol, and believes that the Male and Female natures of the Darkness and Mother  Night’s blessings are meant to work together, a heretical view that he does not often voice, but the inherent structure of the faith has always troubled him.
  • 3 Slavery; Another thing that made no sense to him.  Lighter Jewels have much more refinement and control than the darker, and there are more of them.  To collar and enslave them because of this does not feel right.  They are absolutely necessary and of use in the grander scheme of things.  How can they not also be blessed by Mother Night?  It seems more likely to him, that like Male and Female, Light and Dark just exist in balance, but again, not something he would say out loud.  However, he does show his disdain for the collars, finding them somehow unnecessary--if we Dark Jeweled are so powerful and superior, why do we need the collars at all?
Fears:
  • 1 Becoming Lost in Someone’s Twisted Kingdom; venturing into someone’s mind and bearing witness to their view of the Twisted Kingdom does not worry him.  After all, he’s not really meant to spend any time there.  If he has delved into a Ward’s mind, it is with the express purpose of getting them OUT of the Twisted Kingdom.  He does worry that he could become lost in there, he simply doesn’t let this fear paralyze him.  Every time he goes into the mind of a Black Widow, he knows that this is a risk, particularly if it is an emergency effort.  Most times, he is delving in to keep a Black Widow from losing control, a preventative measure, but if the Widow has already lost control?  If they already wander, that’s when it becomes scary.
  • 2 Priestesses of the Dark Religion (fanatics); Wolf has no problem with your average Priestess, handling Communions and Offerings and the like.  He believes in the Mother, in that Craft and other things are obvious evidence of the truth of some aspects of the faith.  The ones that scare him are the true believers, the ones that think collaring Light Jewels is too soft a touch.  They are the ones that look at him cross-eyed and wonder if maybe he’s learned too much about Black Widows. If anyone sets Glacia on fire, it will be that sort.
  • 3  Failing the Rooks; In a very real way his brothers in the Order are more his family than his blood relations.  He has lifelong friends in the Rooks especially, but also amongst the Summits.  He has trained alongside them, and worked alongside them, and knows that his success is measured by his reputation.  Thus far, he has been successful, and has done nothing to damage the reputation of his Order, but he knows that losing a ward is a real possibility--and now he has been assigned to arguable the most in important Black Widow in the Territory.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Mind Delving; Wolf is particularly skilled at not only touching a psyche, but slipping past their outer barriers and into their mind.  It is far more intimate than simple communication Craft, and his ability to do so is assisted by the Tattoos etched into his skin as part of his dedication to the Midnight Keepers.  This allows him, as a Rook, to touch the mind of a Black Widow in the Twisted Kingdom, and to attempt to draw them out without getting lost in there himself.  He has no particular view of the Twisted Kingdom, as his experiences are always filtered through the mind of his Ward at a given time.  However, time and experience have given him the ability to recognize certain constants, which allows him to provide an anchor for the Black Widow subject he is working with.
  • 2 Seduction Craft; Wolf has developed this skill with the Black Widow in mind.  Sensuality is part of who and what a Black Widow is, and most equate this to sex.  While Wolf is aware that is the ‘risk’ of this skill, he uses it to change the focus of his Ward.  It manifests physically, usually focused on the target’s sense of Touch.  It can be as subtle as a feather-like touch along a target’s spine, or as obvious as the sense of knowledgeable hands roaming over the skin, or as intimate as soft lips pressed to softer skin.  It is designed to inflame passions, and to direct the Widow towards other outlets that are not as psychically draining as the one they might be engaged in.  In short, it is a powerful distraction.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Power Bolts; Wolf has many tools to use in the defense and support of his wards, however Power Bolts is not among them.  He has focused too much on the psychic and other forms of Corporeal Craft, to have added this combat application to his repertoire.  It is, perhaps, too raw an expression of power for a man that has focused on the more psychic elements of his work.
  • 2 Diplomacy; Whatever diplomacy Wolf has developed is strictly mundane, and often a matter of choice.  He has seen things, thanks to his Wards over the years, that would either make people sick, or curl their toes in the best way.  It’s hard to take someone’s petty problems or obstacles or experiences too terribly seriously after that.  He’s been to the Twisted Kingdom and back, and while he can never go on his own, it has absolutely left a mark, and made this Craft too difficult to bother with.

History:

Wulfryck was born to the somewhat well-to-do Glacian Sigurddottir family whose Male founder had long ago been forgotten, or was buried with the advent of the Dark Religion.  The Males of the family, born or married in, were allowed to use the name Sigurdson, for reason that might seem obvious, but that were also bound up in the family’s view of the Dark Religion.  The women would dictate the line, and a Sigurdson by birth or by contract, would not.  Wulfryck grew up uncertain if other families that had an ancient Glacian name related to being the ‘Son of’ or ‘Daughter of’ someone either famous or notorious had this  quirk, but his certainly did.  It made clear, from an early age, that there was a division between Male and Female, and that until Wulfryck could prove he was an asset to the family, he was simply one of several children born into the family at the time.

His Father was a Light-Jeweled cousin of his Mother’s, once or twice removed, he was never entirely sure, other than the fact that his Father was supposedly attached to his Mother’s family for some years prior.  It is a strange thing to see that one’s Father as a lesser citizen in his own home and family. Despite this added layer of disparity between his parents, Wulfryck had a fairly decent childhood.  He was educated and trained from an early age, with the hopes that he would one day bless the family with a Dark Birthright.  He had been prepared with Craft concepts, and education, in the hopes that he would come away with something Darker than either of his parents, after all, his mother was always dutiful.  When he came away with the Rose, the disappointment in the air after his Birthright was almost palpable.  There was some hope that he might still descend well, at least to the Opal, but it was after his Birthright that young Wulfryck became concerned about essentially being discarded by his Mother.

Wulfryck understood the Dark Religion, as much as any child could at that age, and he did not think it was right.  How could it be helped?  Wouldn’t an absence of ANY Jewel be more a mark of disfavor than a Light Jewel?  Why is it that a Light Jewel can act with more precision than a Dark?  And dozens of other questions that were largely silenced or ignored.  Whenever he had a spare moment, Wolf, as he was called by the other children, pursued outdoor activities, not wanting to be indoors where his Mother and Father were, or the other adults.  From his perspective, every glance in his direction was one of disappointment, so he avoided them.  He went fishing, hiking, even began to climb the mountains whenever there was an adult available to take him.  Anything to avoid having to see either of his parents.  As it was, it seemed that once he received his Rose Birthright, he was sensitive to the thoughts and feelings of others, so avoidance was easier.  One of his cousins, Matias, had a Sapphire birthright, which made Wolf’s being overlooked almost a certainty.

He continued his education and training, with his Mother remaining distantly hopeful that he would fully descend.  Wulfryck took to his Craft lessons well, his secular education went well, but he had little interest in mastering all the tenets of Glacia’s faith.  His family put a lot of stock in the Dark Religion, marking it as part of their success, but Wulfryck saw it only as an obstacle.  His Father was clearly considered less, and if Wulfryck didn’t descend fully, there were rumors that his Mother would put them both aside in hopes of a better match, and another child.  When the time came for Wulfryck’s Offering, as chance would have it there was a Midnight Keeper in attendance, working for a member of the household.  He had been there for days with Wulfryck’s aunt, and it was this man that recruited young Wolf to the order.  His Mother, finally, was so proud of him coming away with the Blood Opal, that she showered him with praise for the first time since his Birthright.  For his part, Wulfryck couldn’t wait to leave.

He joined the Midnight Keepers, and discovered that essentially, it functioned the merit of the individual Keeper.  He was considered Dark Jeweled, so he received a great deal more training in that regard, and once they figured out where his talents were he was passed to the Rooks for further training.  It was physically and psychically demanding, but Wulfryck enjoyed the fact that his reputation and ability was entirely based on his own work and skill.  He worked hard, and trained harder, molding his skills and efforts to suit the women that would one day be his Wards.  He was happy to be assigned to Black Widows, and while they could be pious, it was rarely the insufferable piety of a truly believing Priestess in the Glacian Dark Religion.  In time, Wulfryck gained a new appreciation for the Black Widow, and became dedicated to learning all he could about them, the better to tend to them.  Graduation and the foci imprinted into his skin helped him focus his Gift into truly useful talent for his Wards.

Wulfryck became a seasoned Midnight Keeper quickly, in what can only be called a trial by fire.  His first Ward almost became lost in the Twisted Kingdom, forcing Wolf to put his skills to the test, that had until that moment, been entirely theoretical.  Success, harrowing as it was, bolstered his confidence, and earned him a good reputation in the Rook branch of the Midnight Keepers, and among Black Widows that contracted them.  Wolf was assigned to a few of their riskier prospects, early in his career, and he continued to do well, fulfilling his contracts without losing any Black Widows, or their Jewels.  One of his short term contracts involved a young woman named Lilja Syklee, a Blood Opal birthright Black Widow, that the Keepers were aware of.  Wolf was brought in to monitor her Virgin Night, and while he was not directly responsible for it, he was forced to take part.  Lilja’s partner meant well, but he put her Jewel at risk, so Wulfryck shielded it as well, and applied a bit of Seduction Craft, so it was not a total loss for the young Widow.  He was not even in the room, but it was known that he had intervened.

He has continued to be a successful Rook for the last 20 years or so.  Wulfryck has a good reputation, friends in the order, Kain Eskola among them, and connections that were hard earned in a long life of service to Black Widows.  He has learned to plan and equip himself for every contract, taking advantage of his knowledge, and the reputation he has built over the years.  It was this good reputation, and a familial tie to Matias Saari, that brought him his latest contract.  Matias wanted to contract him to the leader of the Coven, to the somewhat notorious Kaija Aili.  Wolf immediately agreed, when Matias tried to give him a series of warnings, all but listing all the reasons why he might want to think about it all first, Wulfryck laughed it off.  You only live once, and before Wolf died, he would have the Coven Leader as his Ward.  This suited him down to the ground, and so did Kaija.  She even wore the Blood Opal, as he did, a connection he found fortuitous.

Character in Play:

Decadence is learned.  Wulfryck was convinced of that, at least in his case.  He had trained hard and long to achieve his current position, up to and including combat training, and most of his work was learning to be still.  It was not his job to attack a Black Widow, nor was he an assassin like some of his brethren.  He was not dispatched to eliminate or remove a problem.  He was not even assigned to protect a Black Widow, though he would, of course.  His true purpose was to safeguard the Black Widow from themselves, and in practice that was something different altogether.  Every woman was different, a construct and a personality unto themselves, and this seemed especially true of the Black Widows he had known.  Some were born to it, some were trained, and while a Rook learned general rules that applied to any one might meet, no training could prepare one of every individual.  Like his most recent charge, wherein decadence had to be learned.

She was a dark haired beauty (they were all beautiful), and Wolf had to learn very quickly that she was at her most dangerous when she was at her most still.  She lounged in the sort of diaphanous clothing that covered her from neck to ankle, but teased the eye so very much, man or woman could not help but be stirred.  Wolf was her Keeper, but he was not immune to the sight of her.  His training lent him a certain amount of resistance to the waves of seduction the woman gave off as naturally as she breathed, and he had learned long ago to recognize the caress of compulsion.  Even if Wolf were moved to do something by her Craft, he would know, and steps would be taken.  This Black Widow had mastered the fine art of decadence.  Everything she did was without any apparent effort.  She walked with subtle grace, and a maddening sway to her hips that made silent promises about what an evening with her might be like.  She sipped wine in a way that made one wish they were the goblet, and her soft smile broke hearts and minds.

Wulfryck had learned to blend in to this aura of casual ease.  He had adjusted his entire attitude to better be able to predict his Ward’s true mood.  The Black Widow presented this facade so flawlessly, so effortlessly, that the only way to get to the truth was to join her in the act.  She had been visited by a wealthy man, a Dark Jeweled scion of one of Glacia’s mercantile families.  The man had paid dearly for an assignation, which could involved the use of Webs as often as it might involve anything else.  The Black Widow could evoke such pleasure that a client might leave believing they had, indeed, enjoyed the pleasures of the flesh upon their exit, or just as often, a client might leave with secret knowledge they might have preferred to leave in the shadows.  Wolf knew this scion, knew that he had a reputation of pushing what ought not to be pushed.  He claimed to be an adherent of the Dark Religion, but no true adherent treated women in such a fashion.  Wolf’s Ward did not push well, but using the Tangled Webs required focus, delicacy, and someone’s direct interference could cause the sort of problem that a Rook was specially trained to avoid.

So, of course, it did.

In his desperation, this wealthy fool attempted to ride the Black Widow’s mind into the Twisted Kingdom, insisting that he had to be sure of the vision he had asked for.  Wolf learned that after the fact, of course.  When he sensed the problem, Wolf rushed into the room to find the scion drooling on the soft carpet, and his charge adrift in her Webs.  Wolf cursed, and moved to wrap his arms and his mind around the Black Widow, Craft move and surged through his tattoos, and his mind slowly, carefully merged with the woman’s.  He felt a brief frisson of fear, like rappelling down his first cliff face, one badly tied knot, one poorly set piton, and he would tumble to his doom.  Wolf dove into the Twisted Kingdom, seeking out the Black Widow’s mind so he could bring her back.

We'll need to know your Birthright request as well, considering you cannot be Blood Opal to Blood Opal (though I'm sure that would look cool).

Blood Opal to Blood Opal would look pretty damned cool.  But, probably Summer Sky to Blood Opal, since the original Roll is 2 ranks of descent? Unless i can go Rose to Blood Opal?  I think that is 3?  Which ever of those two is within the requested range.
