For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

Appearance
Play By: Zoe Bray Cotton
Distinguishing Features: Ritva's eyes are closer to grey than the common icy blue, the only feature she has that might distinguish her from any other Glacian woman.

Personality

Personality: Growing up light-Jeweled in Glacia has forced Ritva to learn how to conceal her emotions. She knows the behaviors expected of her, and conducts herself accordingly by working hard not to attract unwanted attention. In front of others, she is deferential and withdrawn, and tends to fade into the background of her village. The few who do interact with her would call her polite and agreeable, as much of a good example as it is possible for someone with her Jewels to be.

Quiet and reserved by nature, she has never found this act too difficult to maintain, but that doesn't make it any less of an act. She resents the need for it, especially when it comes to her relationships with others. These are almost nonexistent, because she struggles to allow anyone to get close to her. Trusting other humans feels absolutely impossible. She secretly longs to connect with people, to be acceptable to others just as she is, but considers it a childish dream she can never actually have.

Even with patients, Ritva is calm and distant, often to the point of appearing as if she does not care. This is not at all true; she feels deep compassion and empathy for her patients, and truly loves her work. If this can't be seen by anyone else, it is because she works so hard at repressing everything she feels.  There may be nothing objectionable about caring for her patients, but Ritva is convinced that if she lets even that much show, she might slip and display some of the more negative emotions that so often lurk in the back of her mind. She won't take that risk, no matter how much her pretense hurts her.

While she is introverted, and long used to her solitary life, Ritva does get lonely. When she does, she turns to the one being she can trust completely: Mother Night. In the Darkness, she has never felt the judgment the Dark Religion claims is waiting for her. She has instead found unconditional acceptance and the only love she's ever known. Her belief in Mother Night's love has given Ritva a confidence in herself and her abilities which she has never been able to doubt. More than anything else, it is Ritva's deep faith in the goodness of Mother Night that sustains her.

Likes:
  • 1. Learning- Born to a family who ran a bookstore, it was perhaps inevitable that Ritva would grow up with a love of books. While she doesn't object to a good fictional story, she prefers to read non-fiction books. Most often, these are religious in nature, something which has earned the approval of her parents while allowing her to study the Dark Religion and its rise in their country.
  • 2. Her Jewels- While Ritva understands that her light Jewels mark her as inferior in Glacian society, she has always thought of them as a beautiful gift from Mother Night. She knows that they are special, meant to be hers, and while she'd never speak of it, does not consider herself to be lessened by the Jewels she was given.
  • 3. Stray Animals- Ritva pities the strays that roam Glacia's streets, and in some ways, prefers their company to that of humans. She feeds them leftovers when she can get them, and will always take the time to work Healing Craft on any injured cats or dogs she comes across.
Dislikes:
  • 1. Cleaning- It may be an essential part of a Healer's duties, but Ritva just hates cleaning. In the clinic where she works, this task often falls to her due to her light Jewels, something she finds frustrating. At home, she keeps her space neat, and willingly cleans anything obviously dirty, but doesn't feel inclined to do anything more than that until absolutely necessary.
  • 2. Unnecessary Violence- As a Healer, Ritva cannot understand the desire to hurt or kill. She feels that physically harming another should be the absolute last resort, to be done only when all other alternatives have been tried, and doesn't think she'd ever be able to hurt another person.
  • 3. Drinking to Excess- An occasional glass of wine, or even two, is fine, but drunkenness holds no attraction for her. It makes people act foolishly and take risks they shouldn't, and she can't see what others like about it.
Fears:
  • 1. Discovery- Ritva has come to believe that Mother Night as Ritva knows her has nothing to do with the Dark Religion as it is practiced in Glacia. To her, it is not possible that any of her children were created to be less than others, and Ritva is certain that the treatment of the light-Jeweled in Glacia is nothing that Mother Night intended. She is aware every day of the potential consequences she could face for holding these opinions, and greatly fears the consequences of anyone finding out what she truly believes.
  • 2. For Glacia- Her country is far from perfect, but Ritva still loves her homeland and wants to see it thrive. Growing up, she's seen how life for those with light Jewels has become just a little more restrictive with every passing year, and she fears that her country will continue on this path.
  • 3. Geese- It's silly of her, and she knows it, but Ritva will go out of her way to avoid them. When she was little, she saw a nest, wanted to look at it closer, and when she got too near, she was chased and pecked at by the mother. Since then she has tended to take alternative paths if she sees them, and avoids the lakes where they live.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Strong Inner Barriers- The thought of anyone breaking through her barriers and learning her secret has terrified Ritva since she was young. She has put a lot of effort into strengthening her mental barriers, which has made them harder to break through than one would expect from someone who wears the Purple Dusk.
  • 2. Healing Tonics- The creation of Healing tonics is another duty that is considered appropriate for a light Jeweled Healer. As a result, Ritva has had a lot of practice at the task. She is quick at making them, and while her creations can't cure every disease, they almost always result in a faster recovery and milder symptoms, if not an immediate cure.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Seduction Craft- Ritva has absolutely no desire to learn this and has never tried. She's not looking for a lover, but if she were, she'd want someone who was interested in her, not her use of Craft.
  • 2. Whimsy Craft- She's simply too serious to be any good at this sort of Craft, and would rather focus her Craft on more practical uses. The few attempts she's made at practicing this have produced faint illusions that fade away almost immediately.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Tarja Toivonen, Rose to Purple Dusk Witch (53, born 142)
Father: Antero Toivonen, White to Tiger Eye Warlord Prince (56, born 139)
Siblings: Older Brother, Henrik Toivonen, White to Rose Warlord (26, born 169)
Younger Sister, Katri Toivonen, White Black Widow (18, born 177) (will descend to Rose)

History:

Ritva's earliest memory is of kneeling in prayer beside her mother on the cold floor of her home on the night of her older brother Henrik's Birthright Ceremony. At her young age, she had already learned that the Tiger Eye and Purple Dusk Jewels her parents wore were something to be ashamed of, and that they were desperate for all of their children to be found worthy as they had not been.  She was too young to really understand what that meant, or what she saw that morning: the front door slamming shut, her father yelling, her mother sobbing on the couch, and Henrik running to his room, small fist tightly closed around a brilliant White jewel. She fell asleep on that floor eventually, too frightened by the commotion to move from her spot, having learned that what waited in the Darkness was something to be feared.

The next few years were confusing for Ritva, who couldn't understand why she wasn't allowed to play with Henrik anymore, or why their parents were so careful to keep their baby sister away from him. The Healer in her protested that it wasn't right to treat him so, but Ritva couldn't think of anything to do about it that wouldn't anger their parents. Still, the wrongness of it nagged at her, and she grew into a quiet, isolated child, who could more often be found reading in her room than spending time with her family.

When she turned eight, it was her turn to have her Birthright Ceremony, something which Ritva had been dreading. She trembled as she stood before the Priestess who would oversee it, acutely aware of her mother's eyes watching her.  She didn't want to go through with it, afraid of what her parents would do if she failed, but even as she shivered, Ritva felt something in the Darkness calling her. Still nervous, the child closed her eyes and let the Priestess guide her into the Abyss. White and Yellow flashed behind her eyes as she descended, coming to rest in what Ritva perceived as a warm, golden mist that dissolved all her fears. It enveloped her in acceptance and love, and she wished she could stay there forever.

She could feel the Jewel in her hand before she opened her eyes to see her Tiger Eye.  It was more beautiful than any Jewel she'd ever seen, and it was hers!  Ritva loved it at once, but her excitement dimmed as she remembered that her parents wouldn't see any beauty in the Jewel she held. Nervously, she held it out to show her mother, who sighed and shook her head.

From that point on, her parents treated her with the same sort of disinterest as they had previously reserved for Henrik. They'd never been especially warm towards her, but it was still hard for Ritva to bear, and she was often lonely. To cope, she worked hard at her lessons, both those she learned in school and those that were part of the training she'd begun as a Healer. Those occupied her days, and her evenings were spent in prayer, seeking solace from the loving Mother Night she'd encountered within the Abyss.

Eventually, her formal schooling ended, and Ritva spent her days continuing her training as a Healer. She worked hard, and spent much of her free time studying, but her efforts never seemed to be enough to please Anja, the Opal-Jeweled Healer who ran the clinic where she worked. She did a lot of cleaning, and a lot of tonic brewing, and was only occasionally allowed to work with patients, all of whom were as Light-Jeweled as herself. She found this frustrating, knowing that she was capable of more, but was very careful to keep that emotion controlled at all times.  She turned to her collection of books, doing what she could to learn more despite the limitations placed on her training.

Those years were hard ones for Ritva, and she grew more critical of the Dark Religion and more aware of how dangerous it was to hold such opinions. While that did concern her, Ritva had long ago learned to keep her own secrets. She didn't fear for herself nearly as much as she did for her younger sister, Katri. Far more outspoken than Ritva had ever been, the young woman seemed to enjoy engaging in arguments with their parents. Ritva didn't dare involve herself in that, but she could see the coming disaster if Katri continued to provoke them. To prevent it, she tried to spend time with her sister when she could, encouraging Katri to come to her when she was feeling frustrated. Over time, the sisters grew closer to each other than they'd been as children, though Ritva never let Katri know that she shared her feelings. Still, Ritva felt protective of her, and worried about the future Katri would have in Glacia as a Black Widow with no potential to wear a Jewel darker than the Rose.

At twenty, she qualified as a full Healer, though this didn't change her responsibilities much. She still did most of the menial cleaning and nearly all of the brewing, but was expected also to act as a Healer for the clinic's light-Jeweled patients when she could. While she was pleased to take on that role, the nervousness of many of them troubled her. Some wouldn't even look at her, and the helpless resignation she saw in those few sometimes kept Ritva up at night. She was sure that this was not what Mother Night would want for any of her children, and that what was happening in Glacia was very, very wrong. As more and more of her patients began to arrive wearing thin, metal collars locked around their necks, Ritva began to set most of the small amount she earned aside and make plans she hoped she'd never have to carry out.

At twenty, she had her Virgin Night, an event she found rather unimpressive, and shortly after made her Offering, receiving a Purple Dusk Jewel which she wore with pride. Little changed in her life until the day Anja approached her with the news that she'd ordered a collar for Ritva and had been granted permission to wear its controlling ring. It was something Ritva had feared as more and more of her patients came in wearing them, and she couldn't stand the thought of being collared like an animal. She managed a smile, polite words about how pleased she was, but when she left that night, she prepared to follow through on the plans she'd made. Though it terrified her, she was going to leave Glacia...and she was taking Katri with her.

Character in Play:
Dressed in her warmest clothing, Ritva stood at her bedroom window, gazing out into the night. It comforted her that Mother Night would be watching as she left this house behind her, taking a dangerous path to a country she didn't know. Still, she shivered as she mentally ran over the list of items she had gathered for the journey and now carried with her. Reassured that she hadn't forgotten anything, Ritva bowed her head and closed her eyes. If it is your will, Mother Night, she prayed, cover us in your darkness and let us reach safety. When she opened her eyes again, the young woman took a deep breath, forcing back her fear of what lay ahead, and left her room, closing the door behind her.

She crept silently down the hall, barely remembering to breathe as she pushed open the door to Katri's room, walking across it to stand beside her sister's bed. Sleeping, Katri looked entirely content, but Ritva knew that was something the younger woman would never be if she remained here. She reached down, pushed back the blankets, and gently shook Katri's shoulder.

Katri stirred, rolled over, and sat up in bed, blinking her blue eyes. "Ritva?" she whispered before switching to a White thread. *It's still dark out.*

*We're leaving,* Ritva sent. *Get your warmest clothes on and vanish anything you want to take with you.*

* Leaving? Really?* Katri sent as she got out of bed. The eyes that looked up at her were filled with more hope than Ritva had seen in them in many months.

Ritva nodded, then turned her back so Katri could dress. She stood there, looking at the door, until Katri was finished and standing beside her. She laid a hand on her sister's shoulder. *Let's go.*  She removed her hand, and the pair of them moved quietly down the hall and out the door, heading towards the mountains and the hope of their freedom.
