* Plot Information for Glacia

For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Riia is determination. She’ll say she gets it from her father but really, it comes more from her mother, who was always a bit of a rebel and always the type to stand her ground. The problem with her stalwart sense is that it usually borders too much on stubbornness and then Riia is her own worst obstacle so she’s having to learn how to get out of her own way.

She is meticulous, almost anal-retentive with her details. A very mental person. Lists everywhere. That’s another struggle she has -- letting some of details go. So what if it doesn’t come out perfect or there isn’t an answer for it just yet? And while she’ll quickly tell someone she’s not a perfectionist, she’s not entirely telling the truth -- she keeps her room in order and doesn’t like people messing with her stuff. She gets angry about things being wrenched out of her control. And somewhere in the back of her mind, there’s always an anxious voice that she tries to keep silent. A voice that reminds her of her own mortality, or plays ‘what if’ with her thoughts.

Riia cares what other people think about her because she tries deeply to be a good, attentive friend to others. She’d want the same for herself. She’s the person to have a calendar listing birthdays and major events to remember. She’s the one that knows what everyone’s favorite food and color is. She’s the girl usually found reading because there’s so much more for her learn and she can always better herself, plus distracting that anxious voice in her mind is high on her list. If she finds out that someone thinks ill of her, she doubles her efforts to win them over. She hasn’t quite accepted that not everyone is going to like her.

She’s the girl that doesn’t think she has leadership in her but doesn’t realize how many people actually look to her for leadership. Her natural tendency to take charge, to be at the heart of things because she’s a Queen is something she often forgets is very real. She hasn’t learned the weight of responsibility yet because she hasn’t really had to live with the consequences of her actions since she’s still learning. As a Queen, she can’t stand knowing that there are people out there suffering in some regard and she can’t fix their problems. She tends to rally around at least one charity cause in her social life so that she’s making a difference somewhere.

Riia does, however, know when to relax and stop trying so hard. Her family and a few close friends can easily coax her into shopping trips, hiking, swimming in heated pools, going to the theater, etc. Mealtimes with people she loves is one of her favorite things. She’s really shy when meeting males but if they show interest in her intelligence, then she opens up to them. She desperately wants to find someone who loves her for her, even if she still thinks real romance is a lot like fairy tales, but she hasn’t (obviously) had much luck in that department.

Likes:
  • 1 - Traveling. Riia loves seeing new things. Her family used to take a lot of family summer trips but recently they aren’t and she misses that. She makes up for it by reading about other Territories in her spare time.
  • 2 - Gifts. Whether giving or receiving, Riia’s love language is gifts and everyone knows this. And she has the hardest time throwing any of them away. She has boxes upon boxes of gifts going back to before her Birthright because of their sentimental value.
  • 3 - Her family. Riia comes from a strong, interwoven family that does nearly everything together. All of her favorite memories comes from this source, so much so that she doesn’t really seem to bond with other girls her age outside of her family. She’d much rather spend the day with her sister or her mother than with anyone else.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Being conflicted. Riia is slowly becoming a woman torn between two worlds, the one her parents believe in and the one she’s living in now. The Dark Religion holds the status quo and Riia can see logic in it but isn’t it supposed to be bad because it dehumanizes her sister? Growing up, it was easy to follow her mother’s logic but now that Riia is a woman grown, she struggles with what she really believes in.
  • 2 - Not knowing. Riia’s strength tends to be how much information she gathers. If she doesn’t know, she educates herself. If she can’t learn, she feels immensely frustrated. Whether or not she uses the information is irrelevant -- she collects it because that’s what she does.
  • 3 - Large crowds. They tend to jostle people in them and Riia would rather not get bumped and bruised. Also, large crowds have people that get into her personal space way too often. And they’re kind of super loud.
Fears:
  • 1 - Admitting that she has anxiety. Admitting this would be an insurmountable weakness, in her mind, and she’s very careful not to let anyone know how much thinking (and overthinking) she does. If someone catches her in an anxious moment, she’ll brush it off as just under some stress lately.
  • 2 - Rut. Riia already has a bit of a squeamish attitude towards sex so a male in Rut just flat out terrifies her. She knows that it’s possible that she’ll attract a Bonded male and then she may have to deal with it and she just keeps hoping that they’re all Warlords and sexless.
  • 3 - Enclosed spaces. The most people see Riia exhibiting this fear is if they ask her to look into a small closet -- she will leave the door wide open with one hand on it to make sure that no one shuts it.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Sensing spells. Riia’s high mental acuity aids her Craft sense in perceiving many spells, unless those spells cloud her mental status (like a compulsion spell). She is able to glean more about the spell’s intended effects than most.
  • 2 - Fine telekinetic Craft. Riia’s is quietly pretty proud of this strength, but she thinks it’s mostly useless day to day. She’s able to thread needles using Craft, or float saucers of tea without spilling, etc. It takes a lot of mental focusing and that’s why she enjoys it, but she doesn’t tell a lot of people about this because its lack of strong application (in her mind) is embarrassing.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Power bolts. Riia fumbles with these spells because she finds it tough to focus that much power quickly into that spell, so her power bolts usually fizzle out before being launched.
  • 2 - Seduction Craft. Riia struggles with this Craft personally because of her own embarrassment with sex and her body. She barely knows how to dress up sexy, much less give off the aura of it to affect someone else.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Ilona Lindgren, Purple Dusk to Opal Healer (age 52, born 141 AP)
Father: Jari Lindgren, White to Yellow Warlord (age 49, born 144 AP)
Siblings: sister Inari, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Black Widow (age 28, born 165 AP); brother Kalle, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Prince (age 24, born 169 AP)
Cousin: Hjalmar Lindgren, Opal to Sapphire Warlord (age 40, born 153 AP)

History:

Riia comes from a family that taught her to think. Her mother, who had always had an analytical way of seeing things, passed this along to Riia, teaching her ways to deconstruct, figure out, execute, organize, etc. She encouraged Riia to question everything. Riia remembers a childhood full of books, questions, and learning, along with late night giggling sessions with her little sister and taunting her little brother.

Eventually this sort of critical thinking came into play as the Dark Religion began rising to power around Riia in her teenage years. Riia’s mother had taught her that fanaticism of any sort was bad, because bias led to judgement led to oppression, so even though they outwardly abided by the political structure being established, the Lindgren household did not share its tenets.

Riia’s Purple Dusk Birthright showed promise that she would not have to be confined by these beliefs, not as much as her Tiger Eye siblings, and so, Riia’s training with a District Queen began as soon as she reached her majority. Riia’s mother wanted her to experience more of Glacia -- something that Riia also wanted to do -- but the Queen who had agreed to take in Riia worsened in her health, and so Riia was thrust into more responsibilities than a young Queen normally handled. Still, she was capable, if a bit young. While Riia could recount a hundred little decisions that she could have done differently during that time, there was really only one big one that bothered her to this day -- how she handled her Virgin Night. It had been awkward, and she felt so very inexperienced, and the blood had grossed her out, so much so that for years if the subject of sex came up, Riia would shudder and beg for the conversation to be changed.

When the time came for her mentor to resign, Riia was passed over for the District position, a decision that caused her some consternation but mostly relief, since she felt she was still too young to take on such responsibility, even at twenty-five and with a Green Jewel. Her issues with close relationships still needed to be resolved, she felt, and as Queen of a Court, she would be thrown into such a thing long before she was ready.

For the next few years, she trained under another, sterner Queen, whose personality challenged Riia’s beliefs to the point of argument, but she knew she needed the experience and it kept her from having to think about what running her own Court with her own males would be like. Eventually, though, she decided that working with this Queen wasn’t worth the stress and began looking into studying with someone higher. Her mother’s connections to the Province Court enabled her to get a foot in the door. Riia’s work ethic and Jewel secured it. The Kalas sisters were very prominent in Ivalo, if not all of Glacia itself, and Riia, though nervous about such a large step, looked forward to learning from one of the best Queens in the Territory.

Character in Play:

Nervously, standing before a full-length mirror, Riia smoothed her conservative attire once more, wondering if it was still showing off too many curves somehow, even though it couldn’t possibly. Okay, maybe her calves were still a bit too bare but she had been assured that if she went with any longer of a skirt, it would be a dress, and that was be unprofessional as well. So, a creamy peach skirt, a bright mint silk shirt, and a lacy white cardigan to subdue it would have to do. Professional, she reminded herself, tilting her chin proudly -- nope, too proudly, bring it down a little. There. Assertive. Yes, that was the word. Assertive.

Again, she practiced her bow with her slightly heeled shoes. And then her firm but not too firm handshake. “Thank you for considering me,” she said aloud, practicing for the real deal. Gratitude. That would get her far in an interview like this. Assertive and gracious. The Ivalo sisters were a big deal in Glacia. Riia wanted to impress.

There was a knock on her door and her little sister Inari flounced in, her unbound hair a wild contrast to Riia’s Craft-styled straight look that day. “How do I look?” Riia asked her little sister as she flung herself on the bed to give her older sister a look over.

“Good. Professional. You’d never wear that color normally though,” Inari pointed out.

Riia picked at the mint green shirt first. “This one?”

Inari shook her head. “The skirt.”

Riia looked down. It was just a little close to pink, a color that Riia loathed mightily. But it looked really good, just enough feminine without being too girlie, and plenty professional for an interview like this. She sighed. “You’re right. I probably won’t wear it again after this. Now that you’ve pointed it out.”

“It doesn’t look bad,” Inari pointed out. “Just...not your usual color.” Riia strode towards her closet, intending to change it then. Black. Black would go good with the shirt and the jacket. She was halfway to pulling off her black suit pants when Inari used Craft to snap the closet door shut, cutting Riia off from the clothes. “Nope!” Inari said to her sister, grinning. “No changing your mind now. You have to go or you’ll be late!”

She was right. Riia sighed, resigned. And promised to ditch the skirt permanently once she got back.

“Quit overthinking it, sis,” Inari said as she left the bed to hug her sister. “Just do it! You’ll be great, I know it. Just go in there and show her what you’ve done!” Which was plenty. At the age of thirty-one, Riia should be looking at forming her own Court soon. She shuddered at the thought. Thinking that Riia was shuddering from interview nerves, Inari laughed. “Seriously! Just go in there and have a conversation with her. I’m sure she’ll love you!”

Riia gave her sister a thin smile. “I hope you’re right. This is the biggest interview I’ve done yet,” she said.

Inari winked. “First the Province, then the Territory. My sis, Queen of all Glacia one day.”

That made Riia laugh. “Hardly.  I’d hate it, you know that. I’d be happy in a little District somewhere. You could be my Seer.”

“I’ve already signed the deal on that, I told you. You set up a Court and I’m there,” Inari reminded her. She gave Riia a little push. “Now go! Don’t be late!”

Smiling at the thought of the two of them running a little District together put all nervousness out of Riia’s mind once more. At least, until she made it to the doorstep of the Kalas residence.
