For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

Personality

Personality:
Reija is fairly practical, for a woman so devoted to her faith. She approaches life like it's a puzzle, meant to be arranged into a piece of art that will never quite be complete - at least not from her vantage. She accepts that she can simultaneously not understand what picture is being completed even while her faith assures her that the piece she's just put down is correctly placed. Sometimes she's granted glimpses of what the whole picture might be, and that is enough to keep her working at progressing. She was not born with the easy faith that so many of her peers seem (to her) to possess. She has always had a fairly analytical mind, and has had to fight for every ounce of faith she has through a lifelong process of testing and learning and submitting her will to what she believes the Darkness has decreed. As such, her faith is precious to her. She is not afraid to question it, but neither does she equate not having an answer with her faith being misplaced. She is well aware that she is still learning, and will continue to learn for the rest of her life.

That, however, is an intensely personal viewpoint that is not shared with anyone outside of Reija's own mind. She has her share of flaws, but her devotion to the Darkness and Mother Night has always been genuine, and that comes across easily to anyone willing to spend the time speaking with her about the matter. The circumstances of her life have made her a little bitter and cold as far as the rest of the world is concerned; faith is the one matter where she might be tempted to soften when speaking to someone with whom she is not close.

To the majority of the world, Reija comes across as a typical Glacian woman: aloof, exacting, beautiful in a sharp and intense sort of way. She is fairly reserved with most new associates, though this is more from a penchant for diagnosing and calculating than from any sort of shyness or awkwardness. Though Reija is undeniably ambitious she has forced herself to learn patience over the years. This discipline has served her well in gaining favors and appointments, and flows over into her personal preferences as well. Since childhood she has enjoyed order over chaos, structure over wild abandon.

Reija has never been a fan of dramatics, and would vastly prefer it if people would stay in their assigned place and role. This makes it quite unfortunate that half of her family has chosen to shun tradition, law, and common sense for the sake of pursuing their selfish passions. Svea ran away to escape being collared when the time came, a trespass that stung Reija more deeply than most things had up 'til then. Not only did she worry for Svea's future, but the sheer selfishness the act required galled her. Jonothan, who'd been so much more reasonable for the entirety of his life, suddenly murdered the Bound First Escort of Glacia's Black Widow Priestess Queen and then fled the Territory rather than standing for justice. She loves him enough to ache for his losses, but not so much that she isn't furious with his choices.

But like all good Glacians, Reija's fury burns cold.

Likes:
  • Order. This was helped, no doubt, by Reija's first caste training mentor, an aged Priestess who demanded cleanliness and structure wherever she went. However, Reija has always been an over-achiever at heart, and knowing the rules well was just one more aid in excelling.
  • Einar. Though she initially shunned him based on the chaos inherent in his caste, Einar has since truly become Reija's other half. She respects him the way she respects no one else alive, and loves him deeply as well. He is an absolute brute, but she enjoys that far more than she ever imagined she would. There are few things they are not of one mind on, and reuniting with him after her duties are done is usually the highlight of each day.
  • Status. Sheer ambition has driven Reija through much of her life. She enjoys competition, but mostly because she typically comes out on top. She is bright, resourceful, and a diligent worker. When applied to a task, it is the thought of public perception and advancement that motivates her to give her all.

Dislikes:
  • Jonothan. As much as it hurt, Reija could overlook Svea's betrayal, in time. She is, after all, lacking in the grace and righteousness that Reija and Jon possess, and Reija partly blames herself for Svea's mistakes and those consequences. But Jon… Jonothan had no excuse. His selfish obedience to his own lusts and passions has wrecked Reija's life, and though she cannot ignore that some part of her will always think of him as her brother, she's no longer convinced that she'll ever be able to forgive him for what he's done.
  • Pushovers. Reija can be endlessly patient when she needs to be. The one area where she struggles with this is when dealing with people who do not have clear goals for themselves, or clear understandings of their own wants. Getting new information and making an educated choice that differs from a previous one is one thing. Waffling on decisions because you're indecisive or because you've let someone sway your emotions in a new direction is another. Reija has little patience in particular for those who are positions of leadership but lack the confidence or direction to lead authoritatively. She respects confidence and poise, which is one of the reasons she is so fond of watching Lady Elisif speak.
  • Her Opal. When she first received it, it was a joy to her. For most of her life, in fact, she has delighted in both of the Jewels given to her by the Darkness. In recent years, however, she has found herself more and more frequently coming to the very edge of the power available to her without accomplishing the work she wants to accomplish. She is forced to stop and recharge, and it frustrates her greatly. She began imagining what she might be able to accomplish if she'd been given the Sapphire as her Birthright instead. Her ambition would no longer surpass her stamina, and there would be little to hold her back then.

Fears:
  • Einar finding his Queen. Reija is aware that she leans on Einar for support to a degree that may not be entirely healthy. It isn't a problem for her because she does not have any plans to be without him for any substantial length of time. Yet in the back of her mind she knows that there is one thing that could tear him away from her and ruin him, the same way Jonothan's cursed Queen ruined him. She can't think on the prospect for long, because she doesn't deal well with that kind of fear.
  • Elisif's wrath. While Elisif might well be satisfied for the moment by the burning of the Kerava estate, the loss she suffered at Jonothan's hands is one that will pain her for the rest of her life. Reija fears that the fact that she shares a last name with Jon will not only prevent her from advancing as she should, but will summon
  • Having children. Einar has made it very clear that he wants children with Reija, but she has zero desire to risk it. Her fears around this are myriad, but the primary reservations stem from Svea's betrayal. Not only would it feel like something of a judgment if she were to birth a Light Jeweled child, but being betrayed again the way she feels Svea betrayed her isn't something she wants to leave herself open to.

Craft Strengths:
  • Managing Collar/Ring of Obedience. For some reason, Reija took to this Craft like a fish to water. She has an almost intuitive understanding of how to weave her Craft through the link between control ring and collar, and can not only control the sort of sensations sent through the collar, but can sense the general state of the wearer at will.
  • Scrying. One of the Priestesses who assisted with Reija's caste training had a fondness for scrying, and taught Reija how to do it. It requires Reija to commune with the Darkness, and she must have some connection to the person or place she's trying to see, but given these things and some time, she can peer across the distance to see other places.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Defensive Shielding. As a well-to-do, Dark Jeweled Glacian lady, Reija has almost always had an escort. She paid for the service of the Rooks regularly before she met Einar. She is with him now so constantly that she could not recall the last time she's erected her own shield. She could still do it in a pinch, but it would not withstand what a Sapphire shield should withstand before shattering.
  • Breaking Mental Barriers. This, Reija has tried, often and repeatedly. Had she been more thorough with monitoring her own family, she perhaps would not have been blindsided by their reckless and bitter betrayals so many times. When she has a need to question anyone in the course of the work she does for the Conclave, she must ask Einar or someone else to open the subject's mind. She simply cannot manage it herself, to any degree of success.

History:
Reija Harmaa had a plan for her life, once upon a time. She'd been her parents' pride and joy for a time, particularly after her Birthright Ceremony. Though neither of her parents had succeeded in acquiring a Dark Jewel, Reija's grandparents had descended properly, and Reija's Opal Birthright was seen as the family returning to its proper course. She took naturally to her Caste training once the scent of the Priestess manifested about her, and took great care to help shepherd her younger brother when he came along. His Purple Dusk Birthright was a matter of concern to the young Priestess, who'd gotten it into her head that the family line ought to be descending in Darkness again, not growing lighter.

As the years passed, Reija came to better understand how such things worked, and was content for the most part in watching over her small family - a role she took informally on herself when her grandmother, the actual matriarch, was absent. A bright and precocious child, Reija developed a preference for order and neatness early on in life, and this disposition affected everything from the tidiness of her quarters to the relationships she engaged in. The addition of a younger sister to the family in Reija's eighteenth year was unexpected, but not unwelcome. Reija took over much of the raising of young Svea herself, and as the years passed, the Priestess came to view the youngest Harmaa much like her own daughter. It was particularly painful then, when Reija led Svea through her Birthright Ceremony and the Healer emerged with a White Jewel. Ever a forthright person at that point, Reija did a poor job of obfuscating the tremendous shock that rocked her. Her relationship with Svea was never quite the same after that, from either side.

Reija internalized what she felt was the blow of Svea's Offering. She was 26 by then, and had just been named High Priestess of a District court within the Salo Province. That she had to relocate away from her family's native Tornio Province to accept the position was perhaps fortuitous. Though her family moved with her, the exposure to a new court and new position gave her much to focus on besides the disappointment she felt every time she looked at Svea. It was also where she met Einar Larsen for the first time, the man she would eventually marry. Their courtship was not a lengthy one.  Reija denied it for a bit, considering how averse she was to dealing with the inherent chaos that came with a Warlord Prince. She forced Einar to pursue her for a time, though in truth she knew fairly quickly that he was not so disposable as the other men she'd dated. Though their marriage has evolved significantly over the past twelve years, Reija has never once had cause to regret her choice. She and Einar are in lock-step on almost every matter of importance, and she draws a strength and support from him that she could never have imagined before she met him.

That has been particularly necessary in the past few years, when Reija's family betrayed her in all of the worst ways. She had been content to serve Glacia in the role assigned to her, to worship at the Dark Altars and facilitate the will of the Tri-Casted Gray leader Mother Night had put at the helm of the Star of Kaeleer. Elisif's version of the Dark Religion resonated deeply with Reija, and her relationship with her family reflected the careful shepherding the Dark Religion prescribed. She does love them, but sincerely believes that their weaker Jewels are evidence of some flaw inherent in their souls. She believes that a life of service and obedience to the Darkness is the best way to purge those flaws, and found every way she could to help nurture her parents and younger sister towards a respect for and understanding of the spirituality which had so defined their lives.

When Svea ran away, Reija was heartbroken. Not only did she see Svea as having given in to the deviant nature that'd netted her a Light Jewel in the first place, but it was an obvious stain on a nearly spotless public record for Reija herself. The biggest scandal she'd had to worry about prior to that was the one surrounding Jon's marriage. His wife was his Bound Queen, but apparently despised Jon for defending himself and inadvertently killing someone the Queen cared about. Jon was denied the right to serve in his own Queen's court and was sent instead to Vaasa to work under Elisif Brenden. It was a show of sacrifice and devotion from Jon's wife to Elisif, but it was an obvious and malicious slight against Jon himself. Reija suffered some embarrassment from the whole affair (not to mention fury on Jon's behalf), but that was nothing compared to the matter of Svea's disappearance.

Though Reija was serving in the Salo Province Court by then, another Priestess was chosen for the High Priestess position not long after Svea's disappearance. Reija understood then that in order to keep advancing, to keep serving in greater capacities, she was going to have to find a way to make herself more valuable and effective than the stigma of her ill-behaved family made her a liability. As with everything, Einar was entirely supportive in her endeavors, and the two have begun to chip away at the deviant power of the Underground.

Things have only gotten more desperate since Jonothan fled. He was now publicly accused of murdering Elisif Brenden's First Escort, and rather than standing to pay the Price for his actions, he's nowhere to be found. If Svea hadn't already broken Reija's heart, Jon's betrayal would've shattered it. It was one thing to kill a man and flee; it was another thing entirely to assault the Bound Male of Elisif Brenden, who gave of her life and blood for the sake of the Territory they all enjoyed. Reija feels sincere and deep shame that her family has shown such a lack of faith, devotion, and gratitude for all that they've been given, and she is now on a very personal mission to make up for their lack.

One way or another.

Character in Play:
Reija did not sigh outwardly; she was young but not that young. After all, the Prince across the table from her was a perfectly respectable man from a well-established family with impeccable credentials. It'd be poor form to be so gauche as to express her boredom when he was trying so hard to be charming and entertaining.

Even if he was failing miserably at both.

He'd been satisfying enough in the bedroom, which is the only reason Reija had agreed to spend her afternoon listening to him drone on not-so-subtly about his holdings and his family's estates. This would be the last time, though, she decided. Stamina he may have, but she lacked the stamina required to survive his endless prattle. Even if she couldn't find a longer-lasting bedmate, she could find a quieter one, by the Darkness.

She hadn't realized she'd let her eyes wander until she found herself holding the stare of one Einar Larsen, the brute from the Salo Court where Reija had recently taken a contract. There was no doubt that he cut a handsome figure, but she had no room in her life for the unpredictability and danger of a Warlord Prince, no matter how pretty. But she'd let her eyes linger a second too long it seemed, because Einar promptly began to cross the street towards the café where Reija sat. She cut her eyes back to the Prince at her table, and pretended to be entirely unaware of Einar's approach. After all, regardless of what he'd interpreted from her glance, she hadn't invited him over at all, and she was disinclined to invite any potential dramatics.

Turns out, she didn't have to.

Einar did not say a word at first, but picked up the Prince's chair and its occupant, and threw them into the street in one surprisingly graceful movement. Reija sat back in her chair and watched him as he asked very respectfully for her time despite how rude, foolish, and disorderly his actions had been just seconds before.  She should have sent him way. She should have given him a lashing of the tongue so severe that he'd not dare impose on her time again, ever.

And yet…

There was something not altogether unpleasant about the sight of him there, driven past propriety for the sake of winning her attention. Sensible or not, he'd managed to snag her interest. She nodded her assent, and the fool produced a chair from his cabinet and sat himself down upon it. Reija couldn't help but smile, the indignant Prince long forgotten in favor of the force of nature in front of her.
