For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

Personality

Personality:
There are two distinct sides to Polla Voll: her public face and her private one. To the outside world, she’s a smooth, unshakeable bastion of the Glacian faith, regal and civilized. She comes from a well-bred line of Glacian aristocrats, and displays a respectably-tempered fervor for doing as Mother Night wishes. She delights in Glacian culture, respects an educated mind and is committed to helping her Territory thrive with the determined grace for which Queens are known. She is affable even if coolly reserved when not directly engaged, and is easily drawn into quiet conversations about politics, social concerns, history, or art. When interacting with others she is moderately expressive, easily slipping into small smiles of agreement or soft frowns of concern when the topic dictates. When not actively speaking with others she withdraws into a more neutral stance and rarely broadcasts her feelings or thoughts. She is intelligent and well-spoken, having learned early how a well-placed beat of silence can have as much impact as the right word chosen. She is careful to avoid rambling, but comes off as confident in her opinions and unafraid to offer them when asked.

Polla views the Light Jeweled around her as inherently flawed, though not necessarily through any fault of their own in their current life. In her eyes, it does little good to attempt to punish such a flawed soul for the sins which tarnished it in past lives; those deeds are done and out of reach already. However, a soul may be restored to soundness in its next iteration through a life of piety, service, and learning, and it is the responsibility of those more enlightened to help guide these fumbling souls towards this restored fate. She likely would not have advocated the use of collars had it been left up to her, but she understands the usefulness of them nonetheless. Those Light Jeweled who successfully flee only escape the aid of the very people who would help them steer their souls back towards purity. That being the case, sometimes it’s necessary to take a forceful hand for the sake of the soul in question… even, unfortunately, if the owner of that soul objects. Polla takes no delight in the suffering of others, but sees her work to quell the success of the Underground as ultimately helping those involved. They may not want to be so helped, but the weight that forcing the issue puts on her heart is a sacrifice Polla is willing to accept for the sake of the greater good. With power comes responsibility, and she is determined to not shy from her Darkness-given duty.

In private, Polla is plagued by uncertainties and doubts about her worth that are jealously guarded secrets. She understands the world she lives in enough to know what a weakness such failures in confidence are and how devastating to her political career it would be if anyone even suspected that she was so afflicted. She clings to faith as justification for her success and her right to be where she is, but in her heart she feels unworthy and just as flawed (or moreso) than the people she is trying to help. This leads to feelings of hypocrisy, which only antagonize the guilt she feels from forcing people to act against their own choices. She is compelled by her most basic of natures to care for the world and people around her, but she never wanted to be the warden she sometimes feels like she’s become. The fact that the Light Jeweled around her have, in her mind, “forced” her to become so strict and severe generates some animosity towards them that she hasn’t fully acknowledged to herself yet, but that manifests now and then in a harsher hand than she’d normally deal.

This hidden, more brittle side of her creates a stormy, tumultuous woman beneath the refined veil of Glacian civility. With a heart pulled towards both sympathy and resentment and a mind cognizant of how neither one are appropriate, Polla expends alot of energy daily just to maintain a serene facade throughout the day’s social events. She only ever allows herself to express this turmoil at home, in the privacy of her own rooms where there are no witnesses save for perhaps her Bonded, from whom she feels no need to hide such things. In fact, she leans more heavily on him than even she realizes, as he is the one person to whom she has bared her soul entirely. His support is the crutch on which she manages to carry out the same act day after day without cracking. That he still stands beside her and desires her despite all he’s seen of her is a formidable source of strength for her, and she is passionate in her appreciation of him.

Likes:
  • Loki. Like is not a strong enough word. She needs him to function properly, at this point. She respects him as a blessed man of the Blood, and his approval of her and the fact that the Darkness has tied him to her is one place she can always look to find confidence and validation for herself. His presence in her life has saved her from spiraling into something dark and unpleasant, she is certain.
  • Wealth. Polla has never known want, but she hasn’t needed to in order to appreciate the fine things her life affords her. She loves high culture, and being able to be comfortable while appreciating it. Her home is extremely well-appointed, though tastefully so, and a good bit of the Voll family fortune is routinely funneled into appointing her appropriately for court. She’s not ostentatious, but if one knows how to look for details they’ll find that her dresses are all custom made and painstakingly detailed.
  • Elisif Brenden. Polla isn’t a fanatic the way some of the Brenden-worshippers are. She didn’t consider Elisif to be the reincarnation of Witch or anything so dramatic. But she does believe that the tri-casted Queen was special, touched by the Darkness in ways most people are not. She believes Elisif’s vision for the united Territory was divine, and even if her plan to accomplish it was an ambitious one, it was ordained by the Darkness and therefore worthy. Elisif’s early death was a personal blow to Polla, who saw her as something of a distant mentor.

Dislikes:
  • Her demons. If there was any one thing Polla could reach out and just change about the world, it would be to silence the doubts and fears that plague her in her heart of hearts. No matter how much she assures herself that she’s been deemed worthy by the Darkness, she can’t escape the little voices assuring her that she’s never going to be enough.
  • Abuse of the Light Jeweled. They are to be guided. Shepherded. Helped. Punished, perhaps, when they act out, but only ever with a purpose in mind, like one would correct an errant child. The goal should always be to teach for the sake of growth, never to harm out of anger or sadism. The Light Jeweled are meant to be guarded and tended, not abused.
  • Her single descent. While Polla feels very at home in her Sapphire and doesn’t feel like she was given the wrong Jewel, she is very much displeased by what it might say about her that she only descended one rank past her Birthright. She does not necessarily desire the Red or even the Gray; those are cold and distant ideals that intimidate her somewhat. But she despises that she could not stretch herself further across the spectrum, and wonders if others around her don’t view it as a very obvious flaw in her makeup.

Fears:
  • Bearing Children. She never gave it much thought until Elisif’s death. But if the trials of labor could cut down such a phenomenally strong woman as Lady Brenden, then it could surely happen to anyone. Polla cannot imagine a more agonizing or humiliating death, though she’d never say that aloud to anyone, considering the circumstances. No one's asked her to do this yet, but she quietly dreads the arrival of that day.
  • Loki leaving. This isn’t a rational fear, because Loki is not only bound to her by the Darkness, but he’s also given her no reason to think he’s going anywhere. Still, Polla is aware of how much strength she draws from him, and she sometimes works herself into a quiet panic thinking of how much more difficult her life would be if she didn’t have him to lean on. She’s not the sort to make a comment or act bothered when he flirts with other women, but the thoughts that go through her mind when he does are merciless.
  • Finding her mother and brother. Polla’s Great Aunt was savvy enough to get the scandal of Polla’s mother and brother’s disappearance swept under the rug, for the most part. It hasn’t terribly wounded Polla’s ascent, and the matter could be left well enough alone. But part of Polla knows that some day, she’s going to have to give in to the urge to try and have them tracked down. It’d be a feather in her cap to have them brought back, and there is an angry part of herself that insists that one day she’ll be able to look her mother in the face and demand she answer for her crimes.

But then what? Would she see her own blood killed for treason? Would she drag her sweet brother back home and lock him in a collar for the sake of his soul, even if it meant he’d hate her forever? The only real reason Polla hasn’t tried to find them yet is that she fears having to make the choice of what to do with them once they’re found.

Craft Strengths:
  • Queen’s Touch. Polla is capable of soothing and ministering even to those to whom she is not Bonded. When dealing with those to whom she is Bonded, she’s able to soothe them without the need for actual physical contact, though she dislikes doing so.
  • Emotional Manipulation. Polla has taught herself to excel in the subtle use of this Craft. Her work in trying to bring the Underground to justice has given her a great deal of practice, and she uses this extensively in the interviews she conducts with suspected smugglers who are brought before her. Her laudable success rate in bringing in deviants is due in no small part for her ability to sway them to confession via their manipulated emotions.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Breaking Mind Barriers. Polla used to have a talent for this, but ever since she ran into a trap spell while performing this Craft, it no longer works for her. She is terrified to even try, keenly aware of how close she came to more dire and permanent damage to herself in her last attempt.
  • Combat and defensive Craft. Polla could construct a shield to keep the rain off of her head if she needed to, but that’s the extent of her ability to successfully shield. If she was ever attacked while without an escort, she’d be fairly helpless. Power bolts and other such offensive Craft feel vulgar to her, and she cannot wield them with any precision or finesse whatsoever.

History:
Polla was sixteen when her mother disappeared from her life. She had been on the cusp of womanhood, a Queen from a socially respected bloodline who’d come away from her Birthright with a Green in her little hands. Her life up until then had been a charmed one; she was doted on lovingly by the Great Aunt who served as matriarch of the Voll family, and was the first Voll Queen in a few generations. She wanted for nothing, until she woke one morning to find that her mother had stolen away with Polla’s older brother Geir in the middle of the night. The note left at Polla’s bedside was brief, assuring Polla that it was only her strength that allowed her mother to leave like this, that she knew she’d be okay. That she loved her, but she had to protect Geir and leaving was the only way to do so.

Polla’s Great Aunt Lotta was the only reason the young Queen wasn’t entirely devastated. The two were already close, the elder Voll having taken a keen interest in the younger one from the time the Queen caste had manifested in her infancy. In truth, Polla had always found it a little easier to relate to Aunt Lotta than to her mother, whose capricious and enigmatic ways always seemed a little more dramatic than necessary to the reserved young Queen. Still, it hurt to be left behind that way, and it marked the first time Polla had ever thought to question her own worth. That was a question that would continue to plague her throughout her life from that point on, though most people would never know.

Lotta saw to her education and finishing, sparing no expense for the young Queen she could envision rising to the Territory seat one day. Polla met Loki Jotunnson when she was eighteen, and the Bond that snapped into place between the two was life-changing for Polla. He is the only male to whom she’s Bonded, but she is certain she needs no other.  He has been a constant at her side and in her life since they first met (save for a brief but dramatic span of time when Lotta was arranging to have Polla’s Virgin Night tended to by someone other than than the over-eager, under-experienced, Dark Jeweled Warlord Prince who was convinced he should be allowed to see to it).

Polla’s Offering was the second time in her life that her confidence was grossly shaken. Not only did she not descend to the Gray on which Lotta had begun planning, but she rose with a Sapphire. Not even two steps, like so many of her peers. Just one. Lotta said the words she was expected to say, that the Darkness had a plan for everyone and that Polla would do great things with her Offering, no matter its depths. But she was disappointed, and scarcely even attempted to hide it.

The subconscious need to prove herself translated into an over-achieving young Queen. Polla had always been a diligent worker, but her Offering made her ambitious in a way she hadn’t been before. Determined to prove to Lotta and anyone else watching that she would do great things with the power given to her, Polla dove into the issue that she felt was most harmful to the Territory she loved: smugglers who preyed on emotionally unstable and frightened Light Jeweled Glacians and moved them out of the Territory. As an established and esteemed Priestess, her Aunt Lotta was already involved in attempting to bring those deviants to justice. With Polla’s caste-enhanced gift for delving through minds and her natural skill with manipulating emotions, she made an excellent interviewer for those who would admit no guilt. When a district Queen in Tornio was promoted to another seat, Polla had made enough of a name for herself despite her youth to vie to replace her. The family’s connections helped fill in the gaps, and she began her rule in a District seat at age twenty-one.

For three years, Polla helped to find and expose those connected to the Underground in Salo Province. She performed well enough that when Elisif Brenden made her rounds during one of the Spring rites, Polla was granted a few minutes of the Territory Queen’s time. Her faith and enthusiasm were well received by Lady Brenden, and the tri-casted woman made an indelible impression on Polla in turn. When the Tornio provincial estate burned and Lady Maarika disappeared, it was Polla that Lady Brenden invited to establish a new seat in Tornio Province as its Queen. Lady Brenden’s recent and tragic death has torn a hole through the soul of Glacia, Polla feels, but she is determined to carry on that divinely inspired legacy in the tri-casted witch’s name.

Character in Play:
What do you think, my dear?

Her father’s voice sounded deceptively droll, as though he couldn’t possibly be more bored than he was right now. Polla knew better. He was possibly more excited about her recent elevation than even she was, though his decades of being trained by polite society forced him to affect an apathetic veneer over his comments. She didn’t answer him right away, but took another few seconds to let her eyes again sweep over what could potentially be her new throne room, with some aggressive redecoration. She moved forward a few more steps, trying to imagine the space outfitted in dressings more sophisticated. Yes, she thought to herself, with a flutter of quiet excitement rippling through her breast. Yes, this will do nicely.

Choosing a new estate for the Province seat was, by necessity, one of her first tasks as the ruler of Tornio. This one was in Forssa, a good deal further south than the old Kerava seat. It was farther away from Vaasa, which might seem like a drawback, but with the widely available Winds within Glacia it was hardly a concern. Being nestled into the crook of the Tulsa River meant the views from the upper levels would remain lovely throughout the year, and being so far south would put her nearer to the southern border, where so much of the Underground’s crimes were perpetrated. It was a short trip across the river to both Virratt and Salo, which created easy opportunities to collaborate with at least two of the other Province Queens. Yes, this location would serve well.

She felt Aina’s approach before she heard it, which was unusual. The Black Widow was one of the more outwardly tumultuous members of Polla’s court, but perhaps that was to be expected, given her caste. Still, the storm of emotional turmoil that preceded her arrival into the foyer in which Polla and her father stood was rare and unusual, and Polla turned with a concerned expression to meet her Seer. She was stunned to find that the woman seemed a stricken shade of pale.

“She’s… she’s dead…” Aina whispered, and only then did Polla notice a paper missive clutched in the Black Widow’s hand. The Queen frowned, concerned, and closed the distance between herself and her Seer.

“Who, dear?” she asked, a hand drawn forward to touch Aina’s arm gently. The Black Widow looked lost, and Polla began sifting through the women Aina knew, family members, friends, lovers. Who could have perished that would’ve wrought such a near-stupor in the normally willful woman? Aina stared at Polla, eyes wide and uncertain, and the silence stretched for a beat while she seemed to struggle with finding words.

“Lady… Brenden…” she finally said, which Polla was certain she misheard.

“What are you t--”

“Childbirth. She perished delivering a child,” Aina interrupted. Having been unaware that Lady Brenden was even carrying a child, the explanation did not make nearly enough sense to Polla. She smiled, the wry, willful smile of someone denying the truth, and shook her head.

“You’re mistaken, dear. It’s naught but a vicious rumor, I’m certain. Really, can you imagine someone of Lady Brenden’s pedigree being felled by something so common? The best Healers in the Territory would be attending her even if she was with child.”

“But the--” Aina began to object, but Polla cut her off again. A little too quickly. A little too coolly.

Enough. It’s preposterous and I’ll hear no more of it. Now. Come and help me decide: silks or velvets for the drapery in this room?” Polla turned and focused herself once more on the tasks at hand, perfectly unwilling to entertain such notions of the impossible.
