Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. Personality

Personality:
Lydia exudes refinement and grace. This is a woman who meticulously picks what style and color attire to wear for each function, who moves with purpose and elegance, who uses her words precisely. She carries herself with great pride. She believes that she has been chosen, first by Mother Night as a Priestess to serve the Darkness, and later, by other causes as the hand of justice and vengeance. She sees herself as holy though not without righteously bloodied hands. The inferior may call her sanctimonious -- Lydia sees them as ignorant and unenlightened. All it takes is just a bit of education to set them on their proper path in life, as deemed by Mother Night.

Her strong sense of confidence comes from her deep, unrelenting belief in the Dark Religion's purpose -- the Light Jewels must be protected by the Dark because they are a danger to themselves. She is a fanatic but the worst kind. Lydia is not blinded by theology, nor does she give into holy rage. She uses the Dark Religion to further her cause because she believes that the both of them are correct, and her ambition to see the Dark Religion cover all of Kaeleer is unmoving. For Lydia, the ends justifies the means. And everything that Lydia does, from her engagement to Kain, to the time she spends reading about other cultures, to the reverent way she performs the monthly blood ritual, is all for a purpose, for advancement, for the Mother.

Lydia’s “relaxation” time is usually spent in the caves that serve as the altars for the Dark Religion. She truly does enjoy meditating in the silence there, feeling as though she is a cherished daughter in the womb of Mother Night. Any interruption to this communion better have a good excuse behind it. She is at the point in her life where she is well-known for her Craft and sought after for her intelligence, and she sees herself as poised to take over the role as High Priestess of Glacia someday very soon.

Likes:
  • 1 - Fine things. This is a woman who will only drink certain vintages of wine, or chocolates from a particular vendor, or certain thread count sheets. There is nothing in her wardrobe or quarters to suggest cheap or unrefined. She considers her tastes in opulence to be rightly deserved, since she is one of the Mother’s chosen.
  • 2 - Success that affirms her ambition. Lydia has a strong drive to succeed, both for her own personal gain and for the Dark Religion’s gain. Whenever this happens, she sees it as a sign from the Mother and is overwhelmingly pleased.
  • 3 - Being seen. Lydia thrives in the spotlight as well as she does in the dark ritual caverns. She loves being the best dressed woman in the room, the one everyone wants to be.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Unexpected change. Lydia is a calculating woman, who has planned much of her advancement in the next few years around certain events that have already happened or will. Any change to this plan, or others, are usually met with, at minimum, minor annoyance over the inconvenience, or, at the worst, a taste of Lydia’s wrath.
  • 2 - Failure. Should one of her underlings fail, Lydia is unforgiving. They will become a lesson in what not do, sometimes a very terrible lesson. The only ones mostly exempt from this are her sister and her close cohorts.
  • 3 - The Underground. What an idealistic fallacy. Do they really believe that the Jewels were meant to work together, to be free to make their decisions? Mother Night instituted a hierarchy of Jewels for a reason, and the Underground works against that perfectly established order. Lydia originally saw the Underground as a mere gnat going up against a lion, but now, she sees them as a disease she cannot seem to cure.
Fears:
  • 1 - Humiliation. Lydia loathes being publicly humiliated, for whatever reason, and her retribution runs deep. She has systematically destroyed her enemies, either by breaking them or seeing them off into quiet little corners of the Realm where they will remain for the rest of their pathetic days. She must remain unblemished in the sight of the Mother or else she will lose her divinely appointed position.
  • 2 - Personal failure. If Lydia fails at her task, then she has failed Mother Night, and that is unacceptable. Perhaps she could justify earlier failures as inexperienced attempts, but now that she has a taste of power, she cannot allow this castle of glass to shatter.
  • 3 - Being wrong about the Dark Religion. There is a seed of doubt, very far down, within Lydia that whispers that everything going on in Glacia is wrong, wrong, wrong. Lydia has learned to ignore it most of the time, but every so often, it wraps one little tendril around her mind and she will be thrown into such a sense of unbalance that she will spend a day at the Altar, reaffirming her life’s work through meditation and ritual.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Blood rituals. Lydia was one of the first followers to learn the monthly Blood ritual from Elisif and for her, this ritual consecrates her to Mother Night every time, renewing her devotion. But Lydia is far beyond spilling her own blood during a ritual nowadays -- oh no, that’s what her inferiors are for.
  • 2 - Compulsion spells. Though she will make a disdainful sound if she has to use one, Lydia has found them very useful for getting some of the more dirty work done in her Province. Plus, it gives her a little thrill of satisfaction should she get to use one as her keen blade of retribution.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Sight shields. Lydia feels these are beneath her, since what does she have to hide? She lives every facet of her life in the open, daring for someone to critique her, so she has forgotten most of the teachings about sight shielding.
  • 2 - Hearth craft. Again, this sort of thing is beneath Lydia. Her servants should be the ones who remember how to do these things, much like they should be the ones who set warming spells on her blankets. She has much more important spellwork to remember!
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Bena Kalas - Rose to Purple Dusk witch, aged 67 (born 127 AP)
Father: Olavi Kalas - Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk Prince, aged 73 (born 121 AP)
Siblings: Miinas Kalas, Opal to Red Queen sister, aged 36

History:
Lydia was the first daughter, the prized daughter for a few marvelous years until her sister was born. Young Lydia resented her sister's birth, because she was a Queen, and therefore, upstaging her, the Priestess. So Lydia pushed herself harder to once again be the darling of her parents.

Realizing that her little sister was not going to go away, shortly after receiving her Birthright Blood Opal, Lydia switched tactics. She discovered that using honey, even if it was faked, drew about more flies than the childish vinegar she had been using. And thus Lydia began to learn how to charm even adults into doing her bidding. No longer did tantrums suit her cause -- no, she used her words and big ones! As she entered her teenage years, she cultivated a very elegant look to her, determined to be in the spotlight even more. She obediently studied every text given her, accepted no failure in her Craft lessons. She became driven.

When Lydia walked out of the Sanctuary with her dark Red Jewel, she knew she was destined for greatness.

Now an adult, Lydia tolerated nothing below a certain (high) standard in her life. She intended to become the High Priestess of the whole Territory and plotted out exactly how she would attain that goal. Everything in her life became a stepping stone towards something else. There was no move she made without careful thought and planning. She made powerful allies. For the first few years of playing in politics, Lydia avoided making enemies because she believed that she could best them with her charm. But once that failed, Lydia learned how to deal with political enemies another, darker way.

She played this game of chess for years until, finally, she was ordained High Priestess of the Ivalo Province. And she didn't stop there.

Even her engagement became a political move. Lydia isn't lying when she says that Kain Eskola is an attractive man, and Lydia performed all of her wifely duties because that was what was expected of her, but the driving force behind their romance was their shared goal to see the Underground destroyed. She’s in this engagement for what she can get out of it -- personal advancement. The people around her, even her sister, became little more than chess pieces to be arranged for her bidding.

But currently, things are perturbing for Lydia. Queen Elisif is making changes to the Dark Religion that could undermine the Priestess’ power. Lydia knows better than to defy the Territory Queen, but there are other ways to make sure that her power remains secure. She’s certain that Queen Elisif’s plan will ultimately fail, it’s just a matter of how quickly and how spectacularly.

Character in Play:
The perfectly manicured fingernail resting against her rose petal soft lower lip held back the frustrated sigh that Lydia so very badly wanted to release.

Her other hand rested on yet another disappointing letter from one of her priestesses in a small village near Lohja. Yet another litany of excuses as to why the Light Jeweled Blood there were being so resistant to the Dark Religion, and how the Queen refused to listen to the girl's impassioned pleas. Pretty little words written so femininely on pretty little parchment that failed to dress up the failure that was happening. This would not do at all. Did no one understand the importance of protecting the Light Jewels? They were like sheep without a shepherdess.

With practiced grace that she was no longer conscious of, Lydia's pale fingers lifted the letter over a small flame of witchlight, letting her eyes settle on the flames licking hungrily. The corner of her mouth quirked in the tiniest of private smiles as she imagined that pretty little failure of a Priestess in those flames, screaming and writhing to escape the punishment that she deserved.

But, Lydia knew better than to take such direct methods. A lesson was in order, yes, but merely one that involved a simple redirection of talents. The young Priestess was not inept, just...hm...ah, yes, presented with far too great a challenge for her current set of skills. Yes, that would do nicely. Just enough of an insult to chastise the girl, and remind her what was at stake, while still veiled enough to hide Lydia's greater purpose in being there, which was to remove the Priestess from her position. Eventually, of course.

The flames licked away the last of the letter.  Lydia called in a quill and began penning instructions for her servants to attend while she was away. She would not be gone long, a day at most, but servants should not be left to their own devices. Discipline was key to maintaining a strong hierarchy. Her little failure of a Priestess would do well to remember that. Pleased that this matter would not be crossing her desk again, Lydia called in her fur cloak, draped it perfectly around her shoulders, and headed towards the Coach waiting for her.
