For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. One of those rare Glacians with dark hair and dark eyes, not common, but not unheard of either.

Personality

Personality:

Lorcan Nivis has been an outdoorsman and hunter all of his life.  He has spent most of his formative years learning to survive in the mountains and hills of Glacia.  Doing so, when conditions can become unforgiving, requires skill, will, and Mother Night willing, good equipment.  On a regular basis, Lorcan has to trust in all of these variables, and absent the necessities of survival, it has given him a dangerous measure of confidence in almost all other areas of his life, as well as an ability to see the humor in a wide variety of situations.  Away from the serious needs of survival, hunting, climbing and smuggling, nothing else holds the thrill of danger (or death).  The specter of failure is minimized in civilized surroundings if failure doesn’t mean falling to one’s doom in a glacial chasm or being devoured by a cave bear.  Without serious stakes, Lorcan finds much of the world shallow and small and largely focused on all of the wrong things.

This perspective has given Lorcan a sense of humor, both light and dark.  He can tell a light and silly joke, as easily as he can enjoy and even utter gallows humor.  His confidence, and casual seeming competence, is of great use to him when he smuggling people out of Glacia.  There is nothing worse than having a nervous guide, even if the guide is good at their job, that nervousness leaks into everything they do and into everyone.  Even when the situation is dire, and every member of a climbing party could actually die, confidence is the only appropriate response.  It actually saves lives, and gives people a measure of bravery where they might not otherwise have any.  If Lorcan is sure he can do a thing, right or wrong, the people he is with are sure.

Lorcan benefits from being a Dark Jeweled Warlord Prince under the current regime, but he has misgivings about the Dark Religion.  He uses his privilege to work against the status quo where possible.  He tends to be leery of Courts, especially one’s that are Dark, though because of who and what he is, he does not shy away from those interactions.  He knows enough to keep his dissenting opinions to himself, and takes a bit of pleasure in playing the role of boisterous Warlord Prince.  People tend to be careful around him for all of the right reasons, and that does help keep him out some troubling conversations.  Lorcan believes the Dark Religion is ultimately causing harm to Glacia, which is why he is so eager to help people escape it.  At the end of the day, he is fundamentally decent and egalitarian, and believes that every member of the Blood has a role to play in the world, in balance with each other.  If the Dark Religion were the truth, it would not exist in Glacia alone.

Being a Warlord Prince is both a gift and a burden.  Alone, in the wilderness, it serves him.  He is another predator out there in the field, as feared as a wolf or a bear.  It makes survival a challenge, but no more or less than it is for other predators.  Out there, close to nature, he does not have to restrain himself.  He can satisfy the need for physical activity, and for the hunt, and when he is on his family's lands, or checking his family's traps and hunting posts, he can even exercise his territoriality.  Poachers are a real problem, both native and foreign, and a healthy scrap from time to time does him good.  However, the wilderness and solitude is not all that  Warlord Prince needs.  Lorcan cannot be solitary and do his work, and so he has to enter civilization often, and it is during those times that he is reminded why he prefers the wilderness.  Despite being gregarious, some would say loud, there is something unmistakably feral about him, and its not just the furs that he wears or his beard.  He is a hunter, a predator, and while he smiles and jokes, there is the sense that his humor could disappear in an instant, revealing the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Likes:
  • 1 Helping People; Lorcan enjoys the good feeling he gets after helping someone get free of Glacia, or defending someone against bullies, or whatever the circumstances are.  He has a hard time ignoring inequity, and an even harder time ignoring someone in honest need.  He has his Power for a reason, and it is not domination--it is protection and appropriate service.
  • 2 Thrills; The thrill of the hunt or mountain climbing, or skulking into a cave hoping there are no predators other then him within it.  There is excitement and life in danger, and Lorcan enjoys the feel of it, and the adrenaline rush that goes with it.  He is at his best when his life is on the line.
  • 3 Hunting; Lorcan enjoys the hunt, when the challenge is just him and nature.  He has hunted people before, because of necessity, but that is not his favored prey.  Hunting another predator, like a bear or a wolf, is always challenging.  Hunting people only ends one way, and he laments that.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Dark Religion; He disagrees with the tenets of this faith, particularly with the more recent treatment of the Light Jeweled.  They all have a part to play.  Men and Women, Light and Dark, and he has seen first hand that there are tasks that a Dark Jewel is not as suited to as a Light.  He has been over the mountains, and the Dark Religion was not in those places before Glacia came along.
  • 2 The Exchange; This group in Rihland has both helped and been an obstacle to his migratory efforts.  Lorcan understands that profit turns the world, and without some money, he would not be able to get anyone out of Glacia, but he only takes what he needs.  The Exchange is profit motivated, and displaced refugees are vulnerable to their predations.
  • 3 Warmer Climates; Lorcan likes the cold.  He rather despises the climate of Nharkava, and does what he can to avoid jobs that take him there.  If it's not cold, it can be temperate, but humidity and rain forests are things he prefers to avoid.
Fears:
  • 1 Betrayal; Lorcan leads a dangerous life that relies on others to keep his secrets, whether they're part of the Underground or escaping the collar.  He must rely on the intelligence and good will of others, and in his experience, those can be very precarious things.  He is in a position where he is forced to trust, knowing that trust misplaced can be his undoing.
  • 2 Losing a Refugee; He really cares about helping people, and getting people out of Glacia so they can have new and safer lives.  Losing a client along the road is always a concern of his.  It is a fear he must face regularly, and he does all he can to avoid this situation becoming more than just a possibility.
  • 3 Re-Education; Lorcan hates this idea.  The idea of a Black Widow and/or some Priestess mucking around in your mind to make you an ideal acolyte of the Dark Religion can keep him up at night.  Would he even be the same person once they sunk they're claws into him?
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Physical Enhancement; Lorcan is particularly gifted in physically enhancing himself with the judicious use of Craft.  While he can certainly draw on his Jewels for long-term enhancement, most situations rarely call for that.  He is skilled at essentially getting the most out of the least possible exertion of Craft; he can fuel fantastic leaps, or even blows, he can put on supernatural bursts of speed, or he can make his fingers strong enough to grip even the slightest hold on a cliff face, or enhance his lung capacity.  Lorcan is even capable of quick combinations of different enhancements, in an effort to preserve Jewel strength for when extensive enhancements or use is needed.
  • 2 Combat Craft; Already a dangerous man, as a Sapphire Warlord Prince, Lorcan is especially so when fighting in his environment.  The cold, snow and ice of Glacia, as well as the mountains, are his preferred battlegrounds.  He knows them well, and understands the perils and obstacles that a fight in such a place could bring.  Even his preferred weapons, climbing axes, are part of this skill, enabling him to use them as not only tools, but highly versatile and deadly instruments.  Direct, efficient, and deadly, Lorcan tends to eliminate mortal threats once identified as swiftly as possible, using the environment to do so as often as he might use a fist or an axe.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Hunter’s Mark; Lorcan cannot Mark his Queen, or anyone.  It would be extraordinarily useful in his line of work, but for some reason, he has not mastered the means to do so.  Every time he tries, the Craft just falls apart, as though the target’s own intrinsic defenses were erasing it.  He simply cannot do so.
  • 2 Power Bolts; As a Climber and a warrior, Lorcan is a fan of precision.  He does not believe this Craft qualifies.  A stray bolt of power into the side of a mountain could trigger an avalanche, too much power in a bolt, and the deer you were hunting to feed half a dozen has half of its meat burned away.  A Sapphire power bolt would erase most things in nature, even rock faces, so he simply makes no use of this Craft and can’t.

History:

The Nivis family had always lived on the edges of the Wilderness in Nivala District.  They were as aristocratic as any of the old families, but chose to live a more rough and tumble life on the edge of things.  They have been hunters and guides for decades, and are well known in the fur trade, knowing to produce the finest furs and leathers, with their brand known all over Glacia.  The Nivis took great pride in living just a little apart from the more developed and civilized parts of the District and the Province at large, as well as their legacy of Dark-Jeweled females and males.  Indeed, their tendency to produce members blessed by the Darkness put them in good stead with proponents of the Dark Religion, and allowed them to keep and hold their lands largely unmolested for generations.

Blessed with the Blood Opal at his Birthright, after enjoying an idyllic if rustic and rugged, childhood, Lorcan was watched closely by his parents, and all of his aunts and uncles.  Already showing a talent for hunting, trapping, and outdoor life, Lorcan was taken under the wing of one of the family’s best hunters and fighters, his Uncle who was also a Warlord Prince.  The Blood Opal youth spent his life camping, hunting, or climbing in the nearby mountains.  He learned to survive in some of the coldest and least hospitable terrain that Glacia had to offer, as well as some of their neighboring Territories.  It was from his Uncle, and indeed his Family, that he took a large part of his current morality.  He and his Uncle were Dark Jeweled, and instead of trying to spread their dominion, they often helped where they could.

Hunting for furs, as well as trapping, can and does sometimes result in waste.  But the Nivis had long learned to use every part of the animal, and what they did not need, they often used to help the less fortunate in their District.  Their reputation, their history of Dark Jewels, and their relative distance, allowed them to develop a unique balance in their extended families, where everyone, even the Light Jeweled, were considered important parts of the family business and legacy,  Lorcan loved his family, and his life, and learned his lessons very well indeed.  He was, like his Uncle, one of the few Warlord Princes produced by the Nivis, and they did have a tendency to stand a little apart from the rest of their vast brood.  If there was work that required long days out of doors, or even alone, it usually fell to Lorcan and his Uncle, and in time, often to one or the other alone.  When his Offering came, and eh came away with the Sapphire, Lorcan found himself under immediate considering for marriage to a second or third cousin.

Lorcan understood that their line and legacy must continue, but it was all too early for him, and he did not have his Father’s head for business.  He far preferred the thrill of the hunt, and the skirmish with bandits or extra-territorial smugglers.  His Ruts drove him away from the Nivis compound, out of concern that he would cause someone he was related to, even distantly related to, great harm.  Lorcan began to hover at the edges of civilization, going into the wilderness for his work, and returning to the city of Heind often to the Nivis trading post, and their Red Moon Houses.  Even with thoughtful precaution, the nature and instincts of a Sapphire Warlord Prince were not so easily contained.  He returned to Heind and focused on a married aristo woman, as Dark as he was.  Before the Males that accompanied the woman realized what was happening,  they were killed while attempting to impede Lorcan.  The female knew, and accepted the Warlord Prince and his state, but when it was done Lorcan had a new reputation for savagery that lives with him still.

It made further retreat into the Wilderness easy.  It was from his own family that he learned of the Underground, and the Dark Religion’s enhanced and far more forceful perspective on Light Jeweled Blood.  At first, his family sought to protect their own, to keep them hidden and without collars.  When that became difficult, and when doing so could mean embarrassment or worse, several members of the Nivis Family chose to leave.  Without the benefits of contacts, Lorcan and others, helped their relations out of Glacia.  Lorcan was not surprised when a cousin recruited him into the Underground, and was even less surprised when he realized that he was very much needed.  It was not happening every day, but people were seeking to escape Glacia, and he was uniquely qualified to help them.  In the end, he decided he was a better guide than most, and that desperate people were not often the most discerning.  Lorcan believed anyone working with him to escape had a better chance at doing so, and as he had been taught—if he was in a position to help, protect and support—should, and did.

Character in Play:

The cold wind stung the parts of his face that were still exposed, and tiny all but invisible bits of snow and ice seemed to lance into him.  The small pin pricks of impact that they made brought a smile to Lorcan’s face, albeit one hidden by the scarf he had tied across his nose and mouth.  He loved it out here, loved it where the snow and ice and weather kept trying to kill him, and he kept telling all of them to fuck off by dint of his will and sheer orneriness.  He would be to the next ‘landing’ by now, the next level place where they could take shelter, if he were not guiding a family of three up the side of this mountain.  Lorcan cast his eyes further up, and saw that all three of his charges were making progress.

As always, he was the anchorman.  If someone fell, it was for him to arrest that fall, so they didn’t take everyone with them.  They had undertaken a crash course in climbing to make their escape, and others had laid in the cached supplies along the way.  Lorcan had secured much of the ropes and made many of the handholds up here himself.  It was not a path that was previously used by other climbers, but skill and a Sapphire could take you far, and if you did it right, you could make it so others could follow.  You had to know where to look, but ‘Lorcan’s Ladder’ as he called it in his mind, made the climb much easier than it would have been, as did the series of hidden shelters he had made.

The Territorial Guard were unlikely to stumble across it, and up here, well, that would be easy enough to deal with.  The roads were a far more dangerous prospect.  Lorcan would prefer that his people risk a fall, rather than tangling with potentially Dark Jeweled enemies.  For every Light-Jeweled contingent, there was always a Dark, and one Dark was a weapon of mass destruction for a small family just trying to live free.  Lorcan couldn’t kill all of them, and in many cases, that kind of body lying around or that kind of missing person could be just a call to look at a given place much more closely.  No, better to avoid them, and only fight and kill if there were no other choice.  Lorcan sensed it before it happened, the Father, older than the Warlord Prince, slipped, but the Sapphire Smuggler was there with a shield, and shoved him back into place.  ”Don’t be in a hurry.”  He sent his voice directly to the man’s ear with craft, ”Slow and steady.  You are your little boy’s anchor.  Remember that.”
