For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Meya Valis is a woman who actually feels very deeply and keenly- she has her wants and griefs and fears. It’s simply that life has twisted her better nature into bitterness. She grew up with the twin ideas that she both deserved the best out of life and would never be as good as her special sister. That tension never entirely disappeared even after Mikaela fell out of favor with their parents, because the rest of the world seemed to love her as Meya could never manage to figure out how to emulate. With their parents, everything was inevitably a transaction- every act of affection earned, every favor negotiated, and her raising a debt owed to them that she had better rise high enough to repay. Where Mikaela seems to have transcended these lessons instinctively to forge actual emotional connections, Meya has not. She would require more emotional vocabulary and logical explanation that anyone has bothered to teach her at present.

Meya has little personality of her own that has not been molded into the perfect Valdis Queen. To date, she has defined herself almost entirely by her Caste, her family and her relationships to both them and society as a whole. Outside of the physical act of sex, she has personal boundaries and emotional walls so thick you couldn’t touch her real Self with a ten foot pole. She does not hope, she does not dream, because those things are for fools who lack the will and ability to achieve. She lives entirely in the here and now, eschewing the would-be for what-is. She is a very determined Lady and a territorial one. She would willingly see blood shed to defend what she sees as hers by right- preferably that other people, but she’s not afraid to get her own hands dirty if need be (so long as the right people never see, of course). She has minions, not friends or confidants, and any hint of vulnerability is kept tightly under lock and key.

What she has allowed herself to express is the sophisticated Lady. Meya enjoys beautiful clothing, soothing music and good tea in expensive porcelain. She adores things that remind her she has reached status, like champagne in crystal flutes and gilded decorations in the hallways of her palace. She would be drawn to these things even had she been born the lowest of Blood, but they have also become a subconscious source of validation for the Queen: I am worthy and valued. She appreciates elegance and fine craftsmanship and if she has a soft spot in her heart for anyone it is for an artist who has the passion of a Warlord Prince and the skill of a master for their chosen craft. Meya regards herself a partroness of the arts and sponsors several (Dark-Jeweled) artists and thespians that she sees potential in.

Underneath the façade of perfection, child-Meya screams in rage and resentment. She has never really been allowed to seek out her own lessons or passions as a child that were not parent-approved. Fun has to take appropriate forms or not be had at all. Now she has great power and theoretical freedom, but even more watchers: her Court and the rest of Glacia beyond, half of whom rivals for her throne or allied to someone who is. She is always conscious of the need to live up to her image and according to How Things Are Done if she wants to belong. Some part of her would quite love to say ‘fuck it’ and let her hair down. To kick off her shoes and write sonnets that voice the deepest secrets of her heart under the moon. To shed blood and see it spilled for her with trust and joy instead of duty and fear. To yield to the impulse that sometimes flows through the Darkness when she draws upon her power to run wild and laugh freely, in celebration of being alive as the Blood are intended to do. But Meya doesn’t know this part of herself and won’t in fact acknowledge that it exists. This is actually the source of many of her more petulant moments.

She’s deeply jealous of her sister Mikaela, paragon of piety and service, and the only way she knows how to cope is to seize upon the ways she can compete with Mikaela: by exercising the power given her as a Darkness-Blessed Province Queen and clinging ever tighter to the dogma that gives her those privileges. And, to be sure, she does believe in what she preaches. She wants to be recognized as a good Queen. But Meya is a Queen who values justice over compassion and living by the letter of the law rather than indulging or making exceptions for those the law doesn’t fit well (or, gasp, changing a bad law). The special snowflakes just need to quit crying and get with the program for the greater good. Being judgmental is both the automatic reflex of her upbringing and a way she can feel good about herself- a way she can win the game they’ve been playing since childhood (even if Mikaela doesn’t seem to know that they are half the time).

In another Territory, another family, Meya might have talked out her resentments and (in some ways) shitty childhood, and grown to be a better person. Not in Glacia. Here the Silent Civil war reigns and anything that can make one vulnerable is more closely guarded than a virgin’s hymnal thread.

Likes:
  • Piste- Meya has been taking private lessons since she was small and if she was not a Queen, she would likely be a soloist with one of the piste companies that circulate through the Territory. She certainly has the drive for it and the enjoyment of performing upon a stage for the world to see. She’s fascinated with the beauty of the costuming and the music, the story and the effort it takes to dance seriously and well. The Queen still practices on a regular basis, finding the athleticism good for using up extra energy and calming her temper just when she most feels like twisting someone’s head off. It’s one of the few times that Meya comes close to truly happy.
  • Touch- Meya is a very sensuous woman who thrives upon physical contact. However, because of her upbringing (their parents didn’t exactly hug them much unless as a reward for success. Mikaela probably would have before a certain point, but Meya couldn’t bring herself to let her) and Glacia’s general social conditioning, she can mostly only sate this need through a string of lovers. Lust is acceptable; needing comfort is weakness and she would rather be continually touch-starved than admit to a vulnerability.
  • Ruling- Meya likes the sense of order that a well-oiled Court brings and the burden of minding a Province feels right on her shoulders. She enjoys having people seek out her wisdom and advice and hang on her every word and gesture. Everything that Meya is revolves around being successful, being worthy of the Valdis line, and ruling Salo is the greatest evidence of her success to date. Of course she loves it. Dealing with malingerers and Gifting the land is occasionally tiresome, but that’s what she has dear little Mikaela and her lesser Sisters for, isn’t it?

    Dislikes:
  • Mikaela- It is so very hard to grow up with a little sister seemingly destined to outshine you. First, she was blessed with two Castes to Meya’s one. Then, when she’d failed to gain the Mother’s blessing and Meya could begin to feel like she’d won, little Kaels Bonded the first male. Even as adults, it seemed like Mikaela was determined to show her up: Meya clawed her way up to Queen of a Province and still people gushed about Mikaela’s charity projects and sought her advice over Meya’s. To make it worse, Kaels is everything Meya is not: sweetness and light and everything nice. It’s frankly disgusting- no one human should be that unrelentingly good.
  • Worship- For all that Meya makes much of being a Darkness-Blessed Queen, she spends shockingly little time engaged in actual worship herself. It’s a holdover from her youth, dominated by a Priestess mother who dragged the family through every religious ritual in existence (and few more Meya frankly suspects she made up) and a sister who spent all her spare time in holier-than-thou prayer. Gag her with a spoon. Naturally, she now rejects all such spirituality beyond the appropriate lip service required of a ruling Queen.
  • Ornamental vegetation- Her grandmother was famous for the fussy little shrubs raised so carefully in the greenhouse on their estate. Meya has more than once wished she could set the stupid things on fire, both because Mikaela is so good at caring for them and because her own gift tends to be better with the hardier native vegetation. If something can survive on its own, Meya can make it thrive, but she’s not going to coddle something weak.

    Fears:
  • The fall of the Dark Religion- For all that Meya is not overtly religious, she does have a profound respect for the Dark Religion and its keepers. Mother Night was the first one to judge her worthy, after all, and she will never forget that. The theocracy brings power and structure to Glacia that the Territory would not otherwise have and she does not know what they would do without it. Unlike her sister, she has more faith in systems and the collective wisdom of organizations than the ability of the individual to think. She deeply fears the anarchy and misplaced vendettas that would result in the absence of the Dark Religion should the flawed and sinful souls of the Underground get their way.
  • Losing control of Salo- Certainly the idea of invading armies of Light-Jeweled aren’t even on her mental radar at this point and the idea of Mikaela ruling in her stead makes a laughable concept. But Salo has traditionally been a hotbed of discontent for the Light-Jeweled and Underground activity and recent events have only deepened Meya’s worry and frustration. What she fears is a bold or desperate enough coup getting lucky and triggering complete anarchy until she and her Court could retake the Province. Even with the best of responses, she fears that the Territory Court would take Salo away from her in punishment. To soothe her paranoia, she has instructed her Master of Guard to lay in a variety of contingency plans covering everything from the means to fight an open insurrection to how to liberate the Queen herself should some fools get the notion to abduct her for leverage.
  • The Territory Court- Meya served at the Court for a time, but Kenna Anderson was one of Lady Brenden’s intimates and Lady Brenden was an intimidating enough figure to make even she think twice. Lady Anderson, therefore, rates caution and wariness by association. Anderson has also managed to be raised to the throne without confirmation of her sister Province rulers and theoretical equals, most of whom are Darker than she. The Territory Court also has a lot of Ebon-Gray males lurking about, most without a Queen to properly hold their leash, and where she had faith in Elisif’s Thrice-Blessed Gray influence to keep them in check, Meya has no such confidence in Kenna’s lonely Green.
Craft Strengths:
  • Emotional projection- Meya is very, very good at what she does. She holds a strong presence in the world and the Darkness and can use her Craft to command the attention of a room without much effort. It isn’t actual compulsion, but she can win friends and influence people with nothing more than the touch of her Jewels backing her winsome smile and force of personality. Mikaela builds solid connections that last through dint of honesty and hard work; Meya’s are much more shallow, but she casts a wider net, and they’ve always lasted long enough for her purposes. Give her long enough and anyone of character will probably see through the dazzle, but short-term Meya excels at convincing people to do things for her or see things her way.
  • Emotional Harm- Meya has spent a long time both studying human behavior at Court and feeling for those little weaknesses that allow her to both vanquish a social rival and keep her sister and Kaels’ male in their place. She is a distinctly predatory Queen who has found that her Craft is better suited to… enhancing the emotional issues of others rather than sheltering and healing them. It takes her less effort to stir the pot in this manner, and intimately enough that the subject usually can’t identify that their feelings are being caused by an outside source.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Queen’s Touch- Meya was raised, and trained herself, toward a certain independence as a Valdis- because at the end of the day, others would be jealous of whatever success she achieved and the only thing she could truly count on was the family and the touch of the Mother. And because Meya failed to achieve any sort of personal connection with the Darkness, that meant she could only rely on herself. Between her own proclivity toward emotional guardedness and her lack of Darkness-Bonded males, her ability to give peace through her Touch is rather underdeveloped. It takes her an annoying amount of focus and twice as much energy to use this ability on her Court. She still outclasses Mikaela in this are on sheer depth of Jewel alone, but not by much.
  • Managing obedience collars- For all the practice she’s gotten and how readily she accepts having the tool at her disposal, Meya isn’t that good at using them. She’s too heavy-handed at the controls and even the most fervent adherents of the Dark Religion start asking questions if errant Light-Jeweled start showing up with actual and lingering damage, even and especially if it’s by accident. She’s expected to have better control than that. Since she has trouble restraining her Jewel strength and telling where the line is, Meya rarely uses the collars at her control for more than mild reminders of how much worse it could be these days. She relies on other types of correction or delegates the task to others- as a reward if they’ve pleased her, or simply as a waste of her time and skills.

*Ingrid and Mikaela were rolled on Mikaela's sheet. Stefan's Jewel is unrolled.

History:

Meya’s family was Aristo and proud of it; a shining example of what wealth and adherence to the Dark Religion could bring a family in Glacia. She was Ingrid and Stefan’s firstborn, a female of the highest Caste the Blood had. She should have had everything going her way. But then came Mikaela before she was three. She never even had memories of life before the perfect little Priestess Queen, light of their parents’ eyes. The young Queen reacted the only way she knew how to. She took every toy Mikaela set her eyes on, ruined her pretty dresses and hid her hair ribbons- anything she could do to hurt the younger sister her parents had slighted her for. If caught out, she blamed the servants for the worst of it. And she learned that it worked. You could get away with anything if you smiled prettily enough and had an appropriate scapegoat.

Both girls received the finest education that money could buy. They were trained in Protocol, math, writing, dancing, music, and the Dark Religion six days a week. And Meya was dedicated to those lessons- she often received higher marks than Mikaela, chasing the praise from her instructors that she failed to get from their parents. Ingrid and Stefan fawned over Mikaela and took her to the Province and Territory court as often as they could, showing off the grand future of their Territory. The pair filled the girls’ heads with their worth and importance, laying out plans for the sister Queens to serve in multiple Courts before taking over their own.

The girls’ parents encouraged a rather toxic dynamic from Mikaela’s first days: they played favorites and their favorite was always the one who could be of most use to the family. And until Meya was eleven, that meant Mikaela. Mikaela the twice-Blessed, Mikaela the good, Mikaela the pious who made their mother crow proudly over her zealousness while berating Meya for needing a day off from her studies like normal people. It was the one day she could make her own decisions about where to go and what to do, and reaffirm her social connections with the other local children who weren’t fortunate or wealthy enough to have tutors. Connections were just as important for a Queen as piety, even in Glacia, and it frustrated the young Meya intensely that her mother never seemed to understand that.

The days leading up to her Birthright Ceremony were a blur of intense worry that she would fail the Mother’s test and equal certainty that of course she wouldn’t, she was a Valdis Queen and as worthy as her parents had assured their girls they were. It was still the happiest day of her life to be proved right. She wouldn’t let go of the beautiful Jewel for it to be set for at least three days and didn’t growl at her annoyingly cheerful sister for a week. Her lesson load intensified after that, but she didn’t mind. She’d proven herself worthy of Mother Night and a Dark-Jeweled Queen, a Valdis Queen, could handle anything.

Her Birthright was the happiest day of her young life, yet her sister’s few years later threatened to upend it, again. Their parents spared no expense in hiring a prominent Priestess to oversee it and planning a massive celebration in anticipation of being able to trot out two Dark-Jeweled Queens before their friends and watch everyone wither with envy and admiration. But for the first time, perfect Mikaela didn’t get what she wanted. Meya watched in comingled disbelief and glee as the young Priestess Queen showed off a mere Yellow as though she didn’t understand what a massive disappointment she’d just become. It was the first time she tasted the sweet flush of unadulterated victory over her sister, watching smugly as Mikaela was punished for an impertinence that would have been accepted as divine wisdom the day before. There was only one Valdis sister who mattered now and Meya basked in the limelight of their parents’ regard as Mikaela’s standing in the household sank like a stone in the ornamental pond in their backyard.

Of course disgraced Mikaela still managed to Bond the first male, even if it was merely a White-Jeweled servant boy. Another sign of her flawed nature. Meya burned with jealousy, though she did intercede on her sister’s behalf after Mikaela begged her earnestly enough. She wasn’t sure if it was some dying ember of sisterly empathy that moved her to do so, or a liking for the idea of Mikaela owing her, but the deed was done and Mikaela’s stable rat allowed to stay as the estate so long as he didn’t piddle on the carpets.

While Mikaela was slumming it with the landens and her fellow Light-Jeweled, Meya was making connections in higher echelons than her sister could ever dream of. The sheep might like Mikaela better, but these were the people who would someday decide who filled a District Seat, who was worthy to rule a Province. She studied in Salo’s Province Court after her Offering and was thrilled when an acquaintance recommended her to fill a Third Circle position at the Territory Court. She had to share the Circle with those Light-Jeweled too well-born to shove under a rug, but it was a dazzling opportunity to be near and learned from the Thrice-Blessed Lady Brenden.  With that example before her, Meya even made a renewed attempt at reconnecting with religion. Her subsequent failure to absorb even the easiest lessons of the holiest caste only affirmed her bitterness and decision to reject it. Who needed to be a Priestess anyway? It was a liberating time, those first few years of her life were she didn’t have to immediately compete with the sister being trained elsewhere, and for a time Meya was something close to happy.

When the Queen of Tampere declared a holy need spread the Dark Religion by moving to Nharkava, Meya was the one nominated to replace her at 24. She set off on her rule with high hopes, calling in the Districts males and filling her first Court. But none of them called to her heart and soul and fear lodged in her heart that others would see that as weakness. She did her job well enough to be promoted to Province Queen when the seat became available a few years later, focused on cracking down on errant Light-Jeweled as her parents had taught her. She tried again to attract a male of her own, opening up her new Court to the males of Raahe as well. Meya was not so lucky, but perfect Mikaela again attracted a lovely Red-Jeweled Prince with a bit of an attitude problem. It was a particular worry for Meya, who knew who would be blamed when Mikaela proved too soft-hearted to control her new male. She rather resented having to take time away from her duties as a busy Province Queen and agreed with some alacrity to her parents’ plan of shipping her away to some Red Priestess to cater to- Meya washed her hands of the girl.

At least, she did until the collars came to Glacia and she could snap one around Meya’s and Anderson’s necks. Here was power, here was control and a means to keep Mikaela to the proper path in a way that no amount of pious Communion to date ever had. Perhaps she was a bit zealous in its use in those early days, but Mikaela certainly needed the correction- as her male’s traitorous actions subsequently proved.

The memory of Mikaela’s tears and abject begging was almost enough to make up for the new males the little bitch still managed to attract. But not quite, and Meya stewed in her resentments once again, made worse by Kenna Anderson’s spontaneous acclamation as their new Territory Queen. No one had ever asked her, and the Province Queens ought to have been consulted. She’d show them all, she vowed- be the best and most feared Queen that Salo had ever seen, and wait for Lady Anderson’s downfall. After all, their Territory Queens had had the most awful luck in recent years, hadn’t they?

Character in Play:

How dare Mikaela challenge her?

Meya stood like a stone as Mikaela finally, finally realized the gravity of her mistake, a strong part of her reveling in the panic that saturated her sister’s pleading. Who was afraid of whom now? But it was unfortunately too late for Mikaela to start begging now. The girl should know better by now than to dispute the decree of one Blessed by the Darkness, even in private. That she didn’t meant a lesson on the subject was in order. Not only would it look bad for Meya as her nominal guardian if she were ever so bold as to try that with anyone else, the older Queen did still have some scrap of feeling left for her sister and not everyone would be so indulgent with such a transgression. Mikaela was still blood and it would be best for everyone concerned if she didn’t behave in ways that would get that blood spilled.

Her sister had always been painfully naïve, touchingly trusting. She didn’t grasp the notion that the vultures were always circling and waiting to swoop down on you the moment you gave them a glimpse of an opening. It was part of the weakness of spirit that condemned her to the Light. Undisciplined rabble-rousers were making things worse everywhere and there was no possible way that Salo was immune to the infection. Yes, innocents (if the Flawed could be called such a thing) would pay along with the guilty, but many of those same people would be as willing to ruin lives that good, Blessed Glacians had worked hard for as they were to play in the dirt and plant flowers.

Mikaela was wrong, anyway. Light-Jeweled were all the same- just look at Mikaela herself. For all her holier-than-thou tendencies, a little push, a little proper discipline from Meya, and she’d fall into line. She always did. That was what Lady Brenden had understood so well, Darkess keep her soul, and Meya often wondered if the lack of strong display on that score from the new Territory Court was what encouraged their little Lights to get above themselves. She needed to stand strong now before the Court blamed her for Salo’s weakness. For their own weakness.

The curfew would remain.
