* Plot Information for Glacia

For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

Distinguishing Features: Climbing is a demanding endeavor, and constant practice and preparation for it keeps Indy in much better-than-average shape. When she has to go out among normals, she tends to keep her arms covered for fear that someone will notice the definition in them. It isn't so pronounced as to seem freakish, but anyone paying attention could tell she's more athletic than the average aristo. Her eyes are green instead of blue, and her hair is a darker blonde instead of the pale blonde the Glacians favor. She's one of them, but there's proof in her coloring that somewhere down the family line, somebody wasn't.
Personality

Personality:
Indaara in her natural state is an energetic, strong-willed, affable person who loves simple things. She loves exerting herself to exhaustion and then enjoying a thorough bath and a good night's sleep. She loves a good, filling meal and good conversation. She loves pushing herself to be better than she was before, or better than the person next to her, and the pride that comes with accomplishing that. She's aware and confident enough to not be ruled by what other people think of her, but it's important to her to prove her worth to herself on a regular basis. She's fairly congenial, and will talk with or laugh with just about anyone, most days. She's far slower to trust people with secrets, of course, but she sees that as just common sense.

As fun-natured as Indaara can be, she nonetheless is every bit a Black Widow. There is a darkness in her that's born of the Twisted Kingdom, a subtle severity to the tones underlying the would-be adventurer. Here is a woman who tore her most beloved brother's heart out for the sake of her own goals, and plunged her family into mourning and grief just to keep from giving up her chosen lifestyle. She wears responsibility with all the sobriety and ambition of a soldier, and feels that her gifts have indebted her to the world around herself. It's all a matter of perspective, though. As every good Glacian knows, everything has a price. Indaara has a strongly practical side to her dealings with the Underground, and it has led her to make some unpopular choices. She is not above making critical decisions without fully informing the clients, trusting in her own experienced view of the bigger picture to net them a positive outcome in the end, regardless of their opinions on the matter.

Indaara was twenty when she "died" to all official channels. At a time when most young women are fine-tuning their romantic wiles, Indaara was cutting herself off from the deepest loves in her young life. The Widow's hunger for physical intimacy is easily-enough appeased; she has no trouble attracting men to her bed or enjoying their company. But there is something around the formation of real relationships that is broken in Indaara. She knows this, but has little inclination to try and investigate or repair it. The way her world has shaped around her priorities, attachments are only liabilities now anyway. People come and go in the smuggling business all the time. Seeing them as more than just resources and chess pieces is to invite personal disaster in Indaara's mind. That's not to say it never happens; she has a few close associates for whom she cares, but their number is miniscule compared with how many people she interacts with on a daily basis.

Likes:
  • Competition. Indaara takes a special kind of pleasure in besting someone else by her own talents, skills, and determination. It doesn't really matter what the topic is, but physical trials are her favorite area in which to compete. She surprises people with her endurance and force of will, and she loves that. More than that, though, it makes her feel strong in her own right, which helps with a (maybe false?) sense of security.
  • Physical Exertion. There are few things as satisfying for Indaara as utterly exhausting herself. This applies to work, contests, exercise, even sex. Anything that makes her break a sweat feels empowering to her. Perhaps it's because she's got such high levels of natural energy; she's been this way since childhood.
  • Money. Her natural family was quite wealthy, and though she doesn't miss the convenience of having money enough to make her go back, she does miss it. She has to watch herself because she tends to get a little greedy now and then. It's wise to keep a little stash to live off of, but if she doesn't keep herself in check she can easily fall prey to certain petty temptations like overcharging refugees in a desperate place.
Dislikes:
  • Liking Tahti.  As far as Indy sees it, the little Healer is begging to be taken advantage of. It's only a matter of time before her heart is crushed, or her body for that matter. She's so soft and delicate-seeming. Indy can't really explain why she hangs around the woman, or why she can't stand to think about the inevitable happening. Most people with traits that Indy considers to be such blatant weaknesses sort of disgust her. Somehow, though, Tahti has wormed her way into Indy's affection. Indy's not always nice in the way she teases Tahti, but Darkness help anyone ELSE who tries to bully the Healer while Indy's around.
  • Men talking down to her. It happens on occasion. Most people who hire a climber to help them across the mountains are expecting a big, burly, beard-covered man to show up to lead them. They're often surprised when they're confronted with Indaara instead. While her confidence is often enough to convince them of her capability, sometimes it isn't. She's not above accepting an educated opinion when there's one to be had, but there are few things that piss her off faster than an uneducated male trying to make suggestions about how to proceed just because he's assumed that his gender makes him better equipped to decide such things. She's been climbing for more years of her life than not, by now, and doesn't take well to these kinds of insults against her competency.
  • Whining. If you have a problem, there are solutions to be found. If there are no solutions to be found, then there's a point where you have to make peace with the situation and accept it. In neither of these scenarios is audibly lamenting your situation over and over and over again going to change anything. Indaara understands that the treks through the mountains are difficult, even moreso for the refugees who aren't used to the trials. She also understands that giving up everything one knows and loves to leave your home country is hard. Hearing people constantly whine about their lot in life, though, has made her seriously consider 'accidentally' dropping certain members of a party off of mountain before.
Fears:
  • Her family finding her. She isn't frightened of what they'd do to her if they found her, really. What she's afraid of is having to be confronted with the people she put through Hell for reasons they won't be able to understand. She is not a timid person, but she would not be able to look Reynard in the eyes after having watched him mourn her as she did. If her family ever found out what she did, they would hate her, and she fears having to face that. It was this that prompted Indy to take the name she now uses in favor of her birth name, and also this that keeps her true appearance hidden at all times by a long-term illusion web.
  • Being the weak link.  Much rides on her being competent in more ways than one. It's true of her leading people across the mountains in a sense, but she feels pressure more keenly when crafting webs and illusions that people buy from her. If her spells fail it could lead to the discovery of not only Indaara herself, but the people with whom she's working. Esteri in particular is of keen interest to those seeking to root out the Underground, and it would be devastating to the people who rely on the hope and potential she represents if those in authority were given legitimate cause to prosecute her. More than anything else in her work, Indy fears one of her webs being the one that doesn't hold, the one that fails to hide her and her associates in anonymity.
  • Poisons. Her mother is a Healer, and when she was small she saw a number of different people brought in to her mother's care for treatment of various poisons. These sicknesses were not like knife wounds or broken bones. They were not single, definite breaches in flesh or sinew that could simply be knitted back together. Poisons were more vague and more terrifying to young Indaara for their vagueness. It didn't help that both of the worst cases she remembers were people who ultimately died from their afflictions. Though her caste obviously demands that she deal with poison from time to time, some memory of those agonizing deaths lingers in the back of her mind. She can't imagine a worse way to go.
Craft Strengths:
  • Widow's Webs. Apprenticing under Ylva Frost meant that her focus was a little bent towards spells that could help the Underground. While Indy received her full apprenticeship, Ylva's own proclivities and experience meant Indaara was privy to more in depth and practical tips about the business of Widow's Webs.
  • Physical Enhancement. Indaara has been straining to be better since she was a little girl trying to keep up with her older brother. As soon as she figured out that she could increase her endurance and strength with craft, she did it regularly. It's made the difference sometimes between being strong enough to hold on for dear life and being lost to the mountain, so it's a skill she keeps finely tuned.
  • Advanced Black Widow Webs. Over the years Indy has relied heavily on her skill with Black Widow Webs to sell the illusions and traps that have saved her life countless times. Such extensive and high-stakes practice has improved her skill, to the point where her webs are exceedingly difficult to detect.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Poisons.  She's never had any real interest in cultivating this Craft, mostly because of her fear of them. She took her lessons and learned the basics in order to satisfy her tutors, but she has never sought further learning on the matter and cannot bring herself to do so.
  • Combat Craft. Indaara's ways are less overt than head-to-head combat. While she's not afraid of winding up in a normal brawl, the thought of using Craft in a straightforward fight against another witch's Craft unnerves her. She's used to having time to prepare her spells, and though there are some she can whip out spontaneously, they are generally ones to keep her alive on the mountain or hidden in the city, not the kind to help her shield herself quickly or throw a firebolt at an enemy.
Life Story
Family:
Mother: Vanja Johansen, Rose to Opal Priestess (b. 129 AP)
Father: Andel Johansen, Purple Dusk to Green Warlord Prince (b. 126 AP)
Brother: Reynard Johansen, Summer Sky to Blood Opal Prince (b. 155 AP)
Sister: Sigrid Johansen, Purple Dusk to Blood Opal Queen (b. 156 AP)
Brother: Rikard Johansen, Opal to Green Warlord Prince (b. 161 AP)

History:
The Johansen family was blessed in just about every way that a Glacian family could be blessed. Andel Johansen's family had been wealthy since before the invention of money, and though Vanja's family were not comprised of paupers, her future was nonetheless secured beyond question when she was paired with Andel by the pair's parents. With a dark jewel and a respectable caste of his own in addition to his family's wealth, Andel had plenty of reasons to become a greedy, proud, cruel man. He did not, however. And though Vanja was not the most outgoing or warm of people, she nevertheless eventually came to sincerely love her appointed husband, and he came to love her as well. The pair of them served loyally in the outer circles of a district court in Ivalo, and still do to this day. By all outward appearances they were the quintessential Glacians, blessed by Mother Night in every way that mattered. It surprised no one, then, when they began birthing well-casted children, each with the potential for dark descent.

Reynard and Sigrid both descended satisfactorily, in fact. Anika was the first of that little family to fail to descend to her full potential. Some of the more gossip-prone women at court were thankful; it was about time that SOME misfortune befall the lucky couple, after all. Then, of course, two years later Rikard received the Green at his Offering and the gossips were at it again. Anika was pulled to serve in the district court as well purely by virtue of her family's standing. In her youth she'd begun her proper training for her caste, but once she received her offering and had enough of the basics under her belt to keep her from harming herself or others, the extensive training her siblings received became less of a priority for Anika. Her parents, kind as they were, were no less indoctrinated into the rules of the Dark Religion than their peers. Anika's failure to descend into darkness somehow symbolized a failing in her character or her soul, and her mother in particular was in no hurry to equip the young Black Widow too heavily with tools that could only cause trouble later.

Anika did not mind. She was more than happy to be freed from tedious lessons under a decidedly unentertaining, elderly Black Widow biddy from court. She'd always been a highly energetic girl, cursed with an abominably short attention span and a yearning for motion and action. Sitting obediently through her lessons in the spring when the sun was high and warm and the skies were clear outside the window was torture for the young Widow. With only minimal responsibilities at court and with her family's wealth preventing the need for an occupation, Anika turned her leisure hours towards all sorts of sports and outdoor hobbies. Living near the mountains as they did, it was only natural that the adventurous young woman was seduced by the talk of skiing and mountain-climbing and such seemingly exotic pastimes. She was lucky in that her brothers were similarly disposed in some degree. Reynard especially loved challenging the mountains, and while Anika may never have been allowed to go on her own, she could often plead her case to go along with Reynard when he went. Andel was heard more than once insisted that it was worth the risk and worry just to escape the incessant begging and complaining for a while. Anika wound up displaying a gift for such sports, though, and whatever worry the Johansens might've had over their daughter's hobbies was somewhat alleviated each time Reynard came back and reported how well she'd handled herself.

When she was not able to burn off her energy through such exploits, Anika fled the courts and her parents' home to seek the company of other light-jeweled youths. She never advertised where she spent her time, and in fact she lied about it more than once. Her parents had never explicitly forbid her from mingling too much with the casteless and light-jeweled, but Anika could guess they wouldn't like it. Still, forgiveness was easier than permission, right? Her parents knew she was off socializing, but trusted her to be as discriminating in her choice of friendships as they would have been.

Anika was twenty-two when she met Ylva Frost. A light jeweled Black Widow herself, Ylva owned a tavern near Vassa that was rumored to be kind to the lightly jeweled. At first it was a place to socialize, to sit and talk and laugh and meet people of her own age and station - though her family's wealth made her a little bit of an oddity. Most people who had as much social standing to lose as the Johansens had a tighter rein on any light jeweled liabilities, after all. Anika loved her family, though, and they never suspected she would in a million years do anything to jeopardize their prosperity. The trouble was, Anika saw no reason why her socializing with others like herself should cause her parents any harm. That Ylva was a Black Widow herself and offered to begin tutoring Anika was a thing Anika knew she probably ought to mention to her parents, but again... forgiveness versus permission. Ylva had a way of teaching that was far more interesting than the elderly court biddies had ever been, and Anika was afraid that if she told her parents, they'd insist she stop. She wasn't willing to risk it, and studied for many years under Ylva.

It was through Ylva and through time spent at the tavern that Anika met Esteri Makela. Anika's motivations for being around Ylva and the other lightly jeweled frequenters of the tavern had initially been selfish. She'd been interested in socialization, flirting, having somewhere that was away from her family and belonged to her.The more she listened to Esteri talk, though, the more the young Prophetess' words haunted Anika. They began to open her eyes to a world much bigger than her own personal one. She began to see at last the suffering of others, and with Ylva's help she began to learn to look forward and read the signs that painted a picture of Glacia's future.

It was while Ylva was teaching her to read a tangled web one afternoon when Anika first saw something that would change her life. She saw her brother Rikard skulking along behind her, following her to uncover where it was she went when she should have been at court or in her lessons. She saw Rikard reporting back to her family where she was and with whom she spent her time, and then... disaster. Fire and smoke everywhere, the tavern going up in flames, Esteri and Ylva and Anika all screaming in agony as the calamity engulfed them. It horrified Anika, and she fell from her trance sobbing and inconsolable, uncharacteristically expressive for such a secretive girl. Her heart broke, as much from the potential future she'd seen as from the knowledge that she could not let it come to pass. She would have to stop visiting the tavern and her hard-won friends, leave her training behind, and only then could they be safe. Ylva, once she got the girl calmed down enough to learn what she'd seen and what she intended to do about it, offered a different solution.

You can go back, live with them, and let your soul slowly die, Indaara. Or you can die, be with us, and live as you were meant to live.

Anika fought with the matter for weeks. She refused at first, unwilling to deceive her family that way. But cutting off her contact with the support she'd come to rely so heavily upon was painful. She spend entire days in a fog of misery, hardly seeing the world around herself for all the thinking she did on the world that was to come. She tried to convince herself that she could be herself and still live the life that would make her family proud. She loved them, after all, and despite their twisted views of her jewels they loved her as well.

But Anika'd had a taste of destiny already, and she couldn't stomach the thought of living her entire life while never tasting it again. It wasn't the first time she'd used her Widow's Craft on her own flesh and blood. It was the first time with a truly nefarious purpose, though, when she crafted a web for Reynard. The next time they went climbing, she made him believe he saw her fall to death beneath an ice slide, her body tumbling into a ravine below while she screamed for him. It happened too quickly for him to be able to do anything nobly stupid, and when all was said and done it would appear as though she'd neglected to tie herself on properly. She could be cocky about climbing, and Reynard was forever chiding her about double-checking her links and knots. She always did, but she always mouthed off as though she thought the process superfluous. Maybe he wouldn't believe she'd made such a costly error if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes, but Anika trusted in her web to do its job. It was the most difficult thing she'd ever had to do, but she sat there, hidden by Craft, and silently cried frozen tears while she watched her brother panic and then devolve into impotent rage at her death. There was nothing he could do, short of throw himself down into the ravine after her. Even if he'd had the time and resources to scale down the ravine's face and look for her, she'd been buried beneath the fall of ice and snow that'd gone after her.

He went for help, and diggers searched tirelessly through the trenches, trying to recover a body that wasn't there. The family eventually conceded their loss, they mourned and grieved, and their lives went on. Anika was quietly decimated in the wake of her deception. She hid under Ylva's care, and for weeks she didn't go anywhere. She was nearly lost to her self-created despair; it was only a conversation with Esteri that eventually began to pull Anika out of her misery and turn her attention back towards the critical mission at hand. She chose a new face and a new name for herself, and Indaara Ericksson was born.

Under Ylva's continued tutelage, Indaara doubled-down on her training and refined her control of Widow's Webs. She learned to create detailed and intricate illusions, learned to disguise herself as well as others who needed to move about anonymously. With no single moment of specific induction, Indaara became part of the feared and despised Underground, helping in her own way to move oppressed Glacians away from the dark-jeweled power-mongers who would tie them down and slide collars onto their necks. Still a very strong mountain-climber, Indaara sometimes works as a Climber to bring in some money, and other times works at crafting webs to sell for illusions or protections against mind-delving. She has collected a small group of people she cares for: Ylva and Esteri of course, but also an overly-compassionate Healer named Tahti and a rough-edged Climber named Jonas, among others. Indaara would have a difficult time labeling them as 'friends', because what they share is both far deeper and far more removed than that. They are soldiers together, in a sense, fighting for an underappreciated cause in a world that would just as soon snuff them out as acknowledge their existence.
Show Us What You've Got

Writing Sample:
"Indy, you're goin' soft on us." Raquel murmured quietly, eyes sparkling with amusement while she watched Indaara repacking her rucksack. Indaara didn't look up, but continued to meticulously count rations, ropes, extra links, spikes. Her psychic closet was roomy, but it never hurt to leave a little extra space in there, just in case.

"Oh yeah?" Indaara murmured, as she worked. She didn’t want to have this conversation. Raquel had work to do, why wasn't she off doing it instead of sticking her nose in where it didn't belong?

"Yeah. I saw him pay you. That's nowhere near enough to pay for supplies AND pay to get out of Raej. Could it be that the infamous Bully has finally grown a heart and is helping out of her own pocket?" Raquel was teasing. She thought she was being funny. She wasn't funny.

"They can't afford Raej. They're gonna have to serve a couple of years once they get there." This made the smile drop off of Raquel's face.

"That's not what he said. He just told his wife and kids they'd be in Chaillot before the year-end. Can you believe that? Lying to his family like that?" Raquel was fully disgusted now, shaking her head as she cast judging eyes over to where the small family was gathered, talking. Indaara cut her eyes over to them as well, just a moment, long enough to let her gaze sweep over each of them. Father, mother, brother, all light-jeweled, low caste. And then the little Queen who'd just received her Birthright, a promising Purple Dusk. Just like Sigrid. She'd descend at least to an Opal, probably darker. And then what? The reins of the family would be handed over to that little girl, if she was allowed to stay with them at all. They'd all be collared eventually, every one of them, and the girl would be taught to despise them for their low birth, despite how closely she clung to her father's hand now.

"He doesn't know," Indaara murmured, matter-of-factly. Raquel snapped her head back to look at Indaara, incredulity etched across her pale face.

"You can't do that, Indy," she whispered, though she lacked conviction. Of course she did. Who was she to think she could tell a Black Widow with the nickname 'Bully' that she could or couldn't do anything?

"I can and I will. Keep your mouth shut."

"But it's not right. Indaara, you can't just--"

"I can't just what?" She said, setting down the items in her hand to turn her attention fully towards Raquel. "If I present him with the real cost, he'd go home until he could raise the money. Do you know how long it will take a family like that to raise that kind of money? He'll be out of his Raejian service before then. If they stay here, they'll be collared and stuck before they ever get the funds together. A year or two in service will suck, yes, but it will be better than getting his entire family stuck here indefinitely. It's a hard choice, one that he's not willing to make, but he should. I'm helping him, in the long run. They may live to curse my name, after, but at least they'll have a life worth living."

Raquel just stared, mildly horrified but uncertain how to argue and whether it was wise to do so anyway. She turned her head, watched the unsuspecting family for a moment until Indaara's voice sounded again at her ear, startling her.

"Keep your mouth shut."

Indaara shouldered her pack, and Raquel could do little but watch as she walked away.

Very pretty! But overkill for this chick. Can I bank that roll, please?

And may I please have another roll? Better stick to a Light General.
