For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

Distinguishing Features:

At first impression, Iiro comes off as the quiet one, the observant one. He lets others handle the introductions during meetings but that firm handshake is the first sign that confidence runs in him. Maybe too much confidence in certain situations. Iiro’s gaze can be unnerving to some because he gives his full attention. His eyes don’t wander much once someone has started talking. Once the discussion has progressed enough for Iiro to feel like he has a grasp on its intricacies, only then will he join in.

Iiro does not take his time weighing pros and cons like some Princes. He possesses a certainty of gut instinct that doesn’t lead him wrong often. Iiro will make decisions after quick deliberation and if it’s the wrong decision, he’ll figure out how to fix it just as fast. His specialty, though, is with calculating numbers.

This presence, this attention extends into his solitary routine, where he is meticulous and thoughtful. But not obsessive, he’ll sharply say. No, he knows when to let something go. Iiro likes to pair sarcasm with gentle wit, like a blade cutting skin but a healing spell closing it lovingly afterwards. It may sound cruel but Iiro knows that life isn’t fair. Why waste time sugarcoating? For the most part though, his snarkiness just comes off as a mild jerk, and he reserves the worst of his mental sharpness for those that need to be taken down a few pegs.

If he comes off as rude to others, those that know him well don’t get that side of him. If it seems like Iiro is two people, it’s actually more like his public face is a mask built to withstand the hardships of society and this softer side is the real him. For those people that see him without that mask, he is gentler, sweeter. He laughs with mirth in his eyes. He brings gifts, food. Helps out with projects. He jokes but not as cuttingly and often there’s a dose of affection to erase the sharpness. But there are few people that see this side of Iiro: his family, his few best friends, and his lover.

Ah, his lover. When it comes to romance, there’s a protective, playful, and seductive streak that surfaces, making Iiro wonder if he really should have been born a Warlord Prince. What happens in the bedroom stays in the bedroom -- Iiro is a private man when it comes to romance and often won’t reveal to others that he’s in a relationship until months have passed. He’s not ashamed of his sexuality in the least but he sees romance as something sacred like religion -- between him and one other person and not the whole world.

  • 1 - Singing. While Iiro likes to sing in solitude, he will not shy from singing with a small audience present. Singing lifts his heart, reminds him of the beauty in the world, and lets him share that loveliness with someone else for a moment. Iiro enjoys the challenges that come with singing -- breath, tone, tempo, melody, etc. -- and will practice certain pieces until he gets it right. His love of music means that theater, operas, and music festivals are an immediate reason for him to attend.
  • 2 - Competition. Whether it be games or debate, Iiro enjoys the art of pitting strengths and weaknesses against the other to see who comes out on top. He is not an overly competitive guy, and is neither a sore winner nor a sore loser. It gives him just as much enjoyment to lose a game and have a good time as it does for him to win and prove himself superior.
  • 3 - Liberal arts. Whether it be through reading or museums, Iiro is almost always immersing himself in some aspect of this broad curriculum. Reading books on philosophy, teaching himself a new language, attending lectures on sociology, browsing the latest art exhibition -- it seems as though Iiro has an insatiable appetite for this sort of knowledge.
  • 1 - People intruding upon his space. Whether it be his room, his desk, or just the current space he inhabits, Iiro is not a fan of unwelcome intrusions. If someone encroaches during conversation, he’ll take a full step back and give them a cool, warning look. If someone rifles through his things, his response is usually very caustic. And if someone enters his room without permission, his reaction is usually volatile.
  • 2 - The Dark Religion being used as oppression. Iiro would be fine with the Dark Religion’s decree that not all Blood are blessed equally. He can accept that just fine, especially since it’s hard to argue that a White could beat a Black in a fight. What he dislikes about the Dark Religion is that it’s being used to keep the masses segregated and one side oppressed, which is just a nasty thing to do by those graced with greater power.
  • 3 - Children under a certain age. As much as Iiro thinks he would enjoy a family some day, right now he still cannot handle young, rambunctious children. Newborns absolutely baffle him on how to solve their problems. Is that a feeding cry or a diaper cry? How does anyone know? And misbehaving children frustrate him to no ends. He tells himself he won’t have children like that but is he being truthful with himself?
  • 1 - Losing his any member of his immediate family. Iiro’s mother nearly died during the birth of his third sibling and that childish brush with death became a deep-seated fear of losing any of his family. If he allows himself to think about death, he’ll drive himself into a panic, so day to day, he pretends as though they have all the time in the world and will never have to come to the end.
  • 2 - Being mentally ensnared or enfeebled. Iiro’s mind is his weapon, his defense. With it, he’s able to keep his family and himself safe. He fears that being taken away, whether through growing old or through spells. He won’t let a Black Widow anywhere near his barriers and he regularly latches on to anything (food, supplements, puzzles, etc.) that will help keep his mental acuity.
  • 3 - Glacia becoming a religious state. The Dark Religion previously was separated, at least on paper, from the state but as one grows, so does the other. The lines separating them have become blurred. Iiro fears that the religious extremism will permanently destroy the bright-minded thinkers of Glacia because they will be seen as voices of dissent, the minority, and thus silenced like the Light Jeweled have been.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Diplomacy. Iiro knows how to work a person, even a small room of people, into believing what he has to say. This makes him a bit of a slippery fish when it comes to getting caught verbally because he can key into what people want to hear and wind his words around that. He’d be a great merchant or politician but he instead uses this to get others out of delicately negotiated situations.
  • 2 - Emotional Manipulation. As a child, Iiro practiced a lot with his voice and eventually learned to tie this Craft into the timbre of his voice. He can soothe with just a few words, or even ignite a spark of fury in others with the same brevity of words. In tense situations, he knows how to keep this use of Craft subtle and nearly untraceable.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Tracking Craft. Even though Iiro is a very mentally keen sort of person, tracking items or people through space is difficult for him. He is unable to focus his Craft on one target -- it comes out in a wide band, which confuses him on which target to follow.
  • 2 - Contracts. Iiro’s own lack of experience initially contributed to this weakness, but it is his continued avoidance of it (now that he knows it isn’t his strength) that keeps him from even trying. He prefers not to initiate them or be bound to them, using his word as (weakly) binding instead.
Life Story

Mother: Riina Valkonen, Purple Dusk to Green witch (age 65, born 130 AP)
Father: Kerr Valkonen, Summer Sky to Opal Prince (age 61, born 134 AP)
Siblings: sister Inkeri, Opal to Sapphire Healer (age 30, born 165 AP);
sister Hanne, Blood Opal to Green witch (age 26, born 169 AP)

Iiro was the much-wished for first of the Valkonen trio. His parents had tried for years to bear to term but Riina, his mother, was prone to miscarry. Each missed moontime was another chance at having a child but was another hope to be crushed, possibly, later on. So by the time Iiro was born, it came at great relief to his parents, who had made it through the gauntlet finally.

Because of their fears, Iiro was coddled as child, a feeling he would eventually buck off in his teenage years. But, until his Birthright, he mostly enjoyed that sheltered life. Even if it meant he had to share it with two younger sisters who also made it into life. Iiro remembers the birth of his second sister being fraught with worry, though no one would tell him why, and that worry over losing members of his family to uncontrolled reasons eventually coalesced into a deep fear. With childish naivete, he went into his Birthright determined to acquire the darkest Jewel possible in order to protect them.

A Birthright Rose was not that Jewel but it was, at least, something. What he initially viewed as frustration and falling short, Iiro, over time, learned to master and command. Combined with his vocal skills, Iiro rose to the top of his class in marks and popularity. He loved reading philosophy, excelled at debate, sang in the school choir, and even found that he enjoyed performing in a few plays. But when it came to getting some Court experience, Iiro balked. He didn’t want to be tied down to just the Court system of Glacia, learning its details. He wanted to learn more. As a young adult shortly before his Offering, Iiro had plans to become a professor, a scholar, and he was not going to get locked into serving.

It was shortly after his Opal Offering that the political climate of Glacia began changing. What started as mild theological musings became slowly reinforced beliefs among the people -- those wearing Light Jewels were less blessed than those wearing Dark. Iiro could smell the bullshit from a mile away but he watched, with increasing frustration and disbelief, as religious idiocy and sycophants became the norm and intellectual diversity was thrown out of the window.

His frustration with those around him is what led him to the Underground. It was obvious that a man with his sort of mental skills would work with forging papers, obscuring financial trails, and passing information about. And with his Opal, he was just on the right side of things, able to pass in the street without being heckled, able to access Courts without suspicion. Iiro continued to pursue his personal dream to become a professor at a local university (which he attained shortly before his thirtieth birthday) but increasingly, it was just a public front that enabled him to scrape away at the rise of the Dark Religion through other means.

“Idiots,” he whispered as his light-colored eyes scanned the article once more. Impossible idiots. All of them. Didn’t they see where this would lead? Had they not read the histories on this sort of thing?

Disgusted, Iiro pushed away from the table he had been leaning over, ignoring his companion, who picked up the paper as though reading the article a fourth time would change the outcome. Iiro began pacing restlessly. “Damned fools, that Queen and her Court,” he muttered, aware that in mixed company such a condemnation could now earn him something worse than just an askanced look, which is what his companion, a fellow doctoral student, shot him. “This is what you get when you remove world history from the curriculum!” Iiro snapped. “We get repeats of stupid shit like this!”

“Actually, I think it’s because someone studied their history that they’re doing this,” his colleague postulated. “It’s been the culture in Raej for decades, generations, right? And it seems to work there just fine.”

“It doesn’t mean it isn’t a barbaric practice,” Iiro shot back. “And it isn’t for religious reasons, like they’re saying. It’s for power. It’s all a bullshit power play. So what’s her game in the long run? Suppress the Light Jeweled now with the collars and eventually forbid them from breeding? Slaughter them by the droves because they’re a blemish in Mother Night’s eyes? What works in Raej was not something calmly instituted overnight and still has its history written in an ink that isn’t black. You and I both know that.” Aggravated, Iiro motioned towards the now discarded paper. “This is just the first step in a long game.”

“Guess we’ll be the lucky ones to see where it leads,” his colleague said dryly.

Iiro huffed. “Lucky. Yes, lucky indeed,” he replied sarcastically. “Lucky to watch the world burn because some bitch Gray Queen has a power trip.”

“You’re going to have to learn to watch those remarks, Iiro,” his colleague warned gently. “Tangling with that Gray, even with words, that’s not advisable.”

Iiro paced towards the window and looked out of it. At the Glacia still untouched by religious extremism, at a population still prizing its intellectual diversity. For today. For how much longer though? “I’m not so stupid as to mouth off in front of those idiots,” Iiro said softly. His colleague chuckled lightly, because they both knew Iiro had a sharp side to his tongue. He’d eventually say something to the wrong person and end up in hot water. But that was a long way off.

Today, Iiro told himself, today it’s still the Glacia I love. Tomorrow, it would be something different. And then, he would have to figure out how to bring it down.
