* Plot Information for Glacia

For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Under the messianic Queen Elisif Brenden, it has flourished, ensuring Glacia’s success in other fronts. But upon her death, a line has been drawn and forces beyond Glacia’s borders are gathering to stop its theocracy once and for all.

The Basics
Character Name: Hjalmar Lindgren
Nicknames:  Timber (by his siblings)
Age and Birth Year: 41 (born 153 AP)
Race: short-lived
Caste: Warlord
Birth Territory: Ivalo, Glacia
Home Territory: Virratt, Glacia

Birthright Jewel: cut Opal
Offering Jewel: cut Sapphire

Play By: Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson
Distinguishing Features: Hjalmar is nearly seven foot tall (6’10 to be exact) and sports sleeves of tattoos bearing mythological designs on his arms.

Speak softly and carry a big stick. That seems to be Hjalmar’s motto, except that the stick in question is himself. While some people his size might come off as bumbling, stupid giants, Hjalmar is only a giant. He moves with a lumbering grace, speaks in a low tone, and rarely uses his size to intimidate. He knows he’s a big man and this awareness has taught him to tone himself down, lest he scare everyone. Beneath that large size lies a mind that collects information like an ocean and weighs everything he knows versus the reality of what’s happening.

He’s a man who keeps his own opinions and would rather observe quietly than speak. This listening attitude allows Hjalmar to absorb information that others might miss. And while his quiet nature tends to have others thinking that he’s a simpleton, his family and close friends know otherwise, and they’re all Hjalmar cares about anyway. His unperturbed nature lends to a calm with others around him -- if he isn’t voicing an opinion about it, then it probably isn’t something worth getting in arms about. Getting to Hjalmar’s core is a long, patient process, and it weeds out the shallow and flaky personalities. He likes it that way. He’s not one for loud, vexing people or places. He prefers his familiars -- outdoor spaces, quiet tavern with good food, the company of his children.

Since his temper is so slow to rise, it takes a long string of injustices or problems to frustrate him. The only thing that gets a snap anger out of him is if his family is physically threatened and then Hjalmar hits a rage so fast that he blacks out. The few times this has happened has served as a volatile warning to all: don’t mess with Hjalmar’s family. If people choose to assign him a reputation of being violent, he’ll growl and know it’s contrary to the real him: he’s the type of man to get involved in any community building project because he knows his strength is put to better use building something rather than tearing it down. He’s a man of few words and his speech tends to be clipped or brusque, but Hjalmar generally means well and would rather get to the point than waste words.

  • 1 - Physical labor. Why use Craft when you have perfectly good muscles? That’s Hjalmar’s thinking. He enjoys waking up, eating a large breakfast, and then working through the whole day until dinner, coming home sweaty and grimy but feeling productive and accomplished. He’s also the type of guy to help neighbors with moving heavy things and enjoy a friendly wrestling match.
  • 2 - Stories. Hjalmar likes to both hear stories and to read them. The first kind he loves to have delivered via a master storyteller like a skald or theater performance. The second kind he loves to do with his kids, even though they’re getting closer to the age of not enjoying them anymore.
  • 3 - Being outdoors. Often found shirtless in his smithy is normal for Hjalmar, who enjoys the feel of the wind and weather against his skin. Coop him inside for too long and he’ll start grumbling. If the weather is nice, he’s usually walking around the land shoeless too. He enjoys taking his children out into the woods to teach them about nature.
  • 1 - Crowds. Being large tends to mean that crowded or small spaces are a pain. You get bumped into, stared at, run into things, etc. Hjalmar hates having to go to the market for supplies and really only tolerates being surrounded by so many people because someone promises him a good steak at the end of the trip.
  • 2 - Intolerance. Bigots and other close-minded people bother the piss out of Hjalmar. It’s about the only time someone will see his slow temper, at first in the form of dark mutterings about the idiots and the ignorant, but if the situation escalates or continues, Hjalmar will use his size to intimidate someone into shutting up.
  • 3 - Violence. More importantly, senseless violence. Hjalmar understands that there is violence and death in the world and that’s natural. But the Blood have a tendency to relish violence, to romanticize it, without thinking about the consequences and pain that it causes. Hjalmar tries to do no harm to balance the bloodlust others are so eager to embrace.
  • 1 - His child being killed. Not just any of his children, though he would mourn them as well. It’s Isaak, the dual-caste son, who was a struggle to bring into the world and is now a struggle to keep hidden from the Dark Religion.
  • 2 - Being unable to work. Hjalmar’s love of metalsmithing means that there’s a great chance of being hurt on the job. Outwardly, he shrugs this off, but those who know him will watch how carefully he moves so that he doesn’t get injured, because if he can’t work, then he thinks he’s useless.
  • 3 - Being Broken. If Hjalmar is Broken of his Jewels, he won’t be able to protect his wife and children as well as he can now. And because of the political climate change in Glacia recently, this worry is almost constantly on his mind.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Item enhancement. Hjalmar’s known for swords that don’t break and keep their edge. That’s not just because of his skill as a metalsmith. Now, he knows that his swords can break but because of the Craft he imbues into the metal, it’s far less likely.
  • 2 - Labor Craft. Despite actually loving physical labor, Hjalmar is also proficient with labor Craft and how to apply it easily to situations that require heavy lifting or delicate maneuvering. Combined with his physical strength, it gives Hjalmar the appearance of being stronger than he actually is.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Fine telekinetic craft. Being such a physical guy, Hjalmar struggles with things in the mental sphere and fine telekinetic craft takes up a lot of focus and willpower for him to use. He tends to just get overly frustrated at the first mess up and gives up.
  • 2 - Passing through objects. Hjalmar struggles with this Craft simply because of his size. While he can be very gentle in a lot of regards, the spatial awareness it takes to move some part of his body through something else is tough for him to focus on.

Even before he was born, everyone could tell that Hjalmar was going to be a big child.

If he wasn’t going to get his height from his legs, as everyone first thought, then he would get it from his torso later on. He was a chubby, thick sort of child and never seemed to get completely out of that baby fat stage until he was a teenager. His younger brother loved to tease him relentlessly, as Hjalmar was sensitive about his proportions, but Hjalmar’s sisters stood up for him. Hjalmar’s Birthright of Opal was the darkest Jewel of the family and the celebration of it gave him extra attention that he was unsure of how to handle.

His teenage years had three major points: the year he began apprenticing as a metalsmith, the day he met the girl who would be his wife, and his Offering of Sapphire. The day Hjalmar met a young girl named Viida -- he was fourteen and she was eleven. A year prior, he had begun to learn smithing. She thought he was gross because he was a boy, he thought she was adorable. He established himself early on as her protector from bullies and as he grew in both age and height, she began to look at him in another way. He would always be her protector but now he was able to sneak her kisses. The only shadow to this fairy tale teenage romance was her Virgin Night. Even though it was just a ritual, Hjalmar regretted not being her first and it bothered him for years that another male, even though he was more experienced and less risky, had shared that special night with her. After her Virgin Night, Hjalmar went into a year of ruthless courting and nearly lost Viida due to his smothering attitude.

Hjalmar was twenty when his first child, a son they named Istvar, was born. Becoming a father immediately changed Hjalmar’s outlook on a lot of things and put his priorities into perspective. He married Viida and did everything he could to make sure this was a two parent child. Their first daughter, Leija, was born four years later and their second daughter, Diona, was born four years after that. By then, it was obvious that Hjalmar intended to remain a part of his children’s lives. Paternity was granted without question since it was obvious that Hjalmar had changed some of his negative ways and was a positive influence on their lives.

Viida wanted a large family but for some reason she miscarried during the next string of pregnancies. After the third, a Healer recommended that she begin taking a contraceptive brew again as part of a regiment to get her feminine health in order. Hjalmar was secretly relieved that they would not have to deal with the heartache for a while. They devoted the next decade of their life to the three children they had.

But two years ago, they decided to try again. When Isaak was finally conceived, they were overly cautious, just like they had been with their first child, and after a difficult birth, their son was born.

Within weeks of Isaak’s birth, Hjalmar realized that there was something terribly different about his son, something that posed a problem for them all: he was a Healer Warlord in a Territory that had condemned dual-caste males to death. Hjalmar had always believed that another child would bring great change to their little family but he had never prepared for it to be like this.

Show Us What You've Got
Character in Play:
They were a family of Healers. Hjalmar had no reason to worry, with his mother and sister, who were also Healers, along with his laboring wife, about this birth but for some reason, he found himself pacing just outside of the room, trying not to rumble anxiously. If three Healers couldn’t handle a birth, what was he, a metalsmith, going to do?

It didn’t ease his anxiety though and it wasn’t until he heard the screeching wail of a newborn that he allowed himself a moment of hope. A few moments later, his mother, Margret, came through the door with a bundle of blankets. “Here, hold your son while we get his mother settled,” she commanded him. In his giant arms, his son was so very tiny, redfaced and squalling, protesting everything about his life so far.

“My son?” he echoed in dumbstruck amazement. And then, as Margret began disappearing back into the room, “Viida! My wife! How is she?” He had to know. Viida was everything to him and this pregnancy had been fraught with difficulties.

“She’s fine, just fine,” his mother assured him. “Just tired, as expected. We’ll take good care of her and you can see her in a moment.” The door closed and Hjalmar was left with his newest child, who would be named Isaak as they had agreed upon for a boy.

He counted all of Isaak’s fingers. Then his toes. All twenty little digits. Isaak waved his little fists angrily and refused to open his eyes. Hjalmar made a soft rumbling, shushing sound and lightly bounced his baby boy to calm him. As they went through that little bonding moment, Hjalmar extended his senses to catch his son’s psychic scent. Warlord, strongly, he felt, and he smiled. A Warlord like himself. Good. Good for the family, Warlords. Steady.

On the tail end of that sweep, he caught something else though. Familiar, that couldn’t be right. Healer? No. No, that couldn’t be right at all. Perhaps his son just seemed that way because of the three Healers in the room. Yes, that had to be it. That made sense and settled the sudden spike of worry within Hjalmar.

For they lived in the shadow of the Dark Religion, and if Isaak, or any of his sons, were born bearing the Caste of a female, it was an aberration of the natural order. It would not matter if their Bloodline was full of Healers. It would not matter that Hjalmar wore the Sapphire, obviously blessed by Mother Night, even for a male.

If Isaak was a Healer Warlord, he would be put to death.
