Offering Jewel: Cut Sapphire

Role: Ruling Queen

Distinguishing Features: Extremely fair skin, hair and sharp cerulean eyes indicate a near total lack of pigmentation to the body rather than simple paleness. Richly coiled and coiffed hair offers a major difference to most Glacians' appearance.

Personality

Personality: Passion and a typical Glacian sort of warmth, paired with the bladed temper of a Dark Jewelled Queen has always rested to the forefront of Bruriah's character, even when very young. Precision matters deeply to her in all things. If one cannot live in an exact manner in devotion to the Dark Religion, she does not view the purpose for drawing breath one that matters deeply. The Lady Garmi thrives on silence when not busy with matters of politics, court, and prayer, though even those are intense and nearly loud in their presentation compared to a Lighter Jewelled Queen.

There's a restlessness in her composure long controlled by years of training and discipline aching for release. At least, all of these are her public persona, dedicated and ferocious, if not somewhat youthful Queen devoted to the Silent War and all it stands for. The truth of the matter has cracks in the mirror of her life, hairline fractures trailing through the surface of the ice she professes to love. Truth is, she despises the pain caused by so much foolishness even if she'd never say so out loud. There's absolutely a simmering rage beneath her every action and breath, and if it seems entirely due to politics, then that is due to how well Bruriah has been taught to reign herself in.

If she believes in the subjugation of the Light Jewelled, it is in the sense that she must due to present law and her respect for it. Men not suffered to thrive and live with the possession of a secondary feminine Caste do not seem to cause nearly so much trouble as careful political Propaganda insists that they do, as her father taught her to question everything not offered in a logical sense. Privately in her heart of hearts, if she could strangle the one responsible for collars, she'd do so with her own bare hands, delighting in the pulse of departing life even as she despised it. Collars, she is utterly certain even if Lighter Jewelled Blood might well have less closeness to the grace of Mother Night, are absolutely not the answer.

Devotion to the emotional needs of the people in her District since her rise to the seat has always been her specific concern, and she possesses studious respect toward the memory of the departed Elisif Brenden, despite the abruptness of her demise. However her respect, Bruriah feels there is are many lessons in the zealot-like and almost tyrannical hold she had over the Star of Kaeleer, for in her mind, it is the actions that make the shimmer, and less the Jewels one is born with especially as starting out with Dark Jewels has a particular weight and intensity. Consequences of actions are often on Bruriah's mind more than she'd like them to be, but its the price of power. There's frustration as well that makes it hard for her to draw a breath and remember to speak or think with grace rather than throwing something across the room for a little relief of the day to day pressure to be perfect.

As much as she delights in her appearance, Bruriah has a true soft heart toward those that have been born with less, in whatever way that presents itself. She's known for her gifting of charity in clever, uplifting fashions in particular. After all, is that not part of the purpose of a Queen, she's been taught, to make certain her people rise? Cautiously, and realistically idealistic could be considered a clear phrase to describe Lady Garmi's personality. She's not blind to the war that had pit lovers against each other, and child against parents in the worst of cases, but is convinced that Glacia could still be saved. Bruriah is very much the intense lover when given the choice, she'd rather the ice melt upon the softest of skin, even as much as she thrives upon a reddened handprint left along the span of her hips.

Likes:
  • 1 Glacian Spring: Not the point of flowers and warm breezes, but the time in between spring and winter, where the snowmelt lingers, and the warmth promises more than is visible to the eye. Each of the important moments of Bruriah's life has by chance, happened just before the beginning of Spring. While she knows it is little more than wishful thinking and coincidences, in an emotional sense she's always felt tied to the time of year, especially given her practically snow-white appearance.
  • 2 Political Discourse: Give the Lady a little tea or a good, rich coffee, and she's liable to talk for hours if the trust is there. Trade and how to better it, the use of district lines, and the enrichment of the common people matter keenly to her. While Bruriah recognizes the slight paternalistic bent of her devotions, it has never stopped the Queen from caring within the limits of Glacian law. Even the fools that seek to climb on hand and foot out of Glacia are still hers to love even while being punished for their crimes.
  • 3 Prayer and Passion: Tenderness and sexual love, as well as worship, go hand in hand for Bruriah. She adores a good Priestess and a Black Widow intent upon her charge, or his if she had the say, which she does not. Having possessed an attentive male for her Virgin Night that truly was not that long ago, Bruriah has always been careful to recall that sharpened spirit of sensual delight, into which she does everything, even something as simple and pleasant as a partnered dance.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Disobedience: Once or maybe twice should she need to give a command. More than that and the Queen begins to wonder if the bearer is either hard of hearing, or rebellious. Disorder, given the delicacy of her health as a very young child, make Bruriah rather anxious, even if she'd be intensely loathed to admit it out loud to anyone. Everything needs to be in its place, at all times save for emergencies, and even then there deserves to be precision. Even the explosive nature of the Dark Jewelled Temper should be precisely aimed.
  • 2 Greed: To live beyond one's means is one of those situations that makes Bruriah's temper spike. To ask for more when a woman or man should be full and replete is unacceptable. She despises corruption and greed despite being committed in her eccentric fashion to the Dark Religion.
  • 3 Purposeless Cruelty: Particularly those families that think it acceptable to beat the hell out of a Light Jewelled youth and think it within the law, she hates, as that was never the point as far as it is viewed. To paternalistically protect was the late Isyviel's message, to love maternally, even while recognizing the lack possessed by ones child is what Mother Night does and thus, the Blood should emulate that love, not corrupt it. A slap to the face must be proven earned. A whip to the soft skin of the back must be the last choice. Death to the breaker of laws, as the Priestesses say, must be carefully timed justice.

    Fears:
  • 1 Power Vacuum: She wakes up in a cold sweat nearly once a week and hates herself for the fear. Only the quiet replacing of silk sheets and a cold but rich bath in precise moisturizers can pretend to soothe what Elisif Brenden's death has opened up. As best as she can, Bruriah tries to trust in the Province Queen that sits above her, trust that the Lady Miina and her peers will keep order. After the panic is done, she even almost believes it, even if her fingertips are still a little bit too cold and tremble with the real knowledge that Winter (War) will be around for a longer time than anyone wants or needs. She fears two different problems and the resulting chaos, not having a Queen that is good enough to bring matters of a civil war to a swift-working close, or worse, finding no Queen at all that is suitable to fill the space left by Elisif Brenden's larger than life presence.
  • 2 Small Unnatural Spaces: As a child, her half-sisters picked on her particularly due to her delicate nature and because she was born after their mother's divorce from their father by their new stepfather. From the age of two, both older girls would leave Bruriah in tight boxes and not say anything to their mother until it had been hours than no one could find her. They hated that she was above them and a Queen, and not born to the same father. To this day, Bruriah finds it very difficult to be gracious to Kaella and Yita, with their late mother's memory being the only reason she does her very best to accept them. Though her Birthright Ceremony ended the teasing and hazing, being in rooms that are a little too small, or clothing that is slightly too tight will cause Bruriah a paranoid startle that has her unsettled for a week or more, and more snappish than a lady at her moon time.
  • 3 Touch Deprivation: Due to her slightly odd appearance especially as a child with few people willing to touch or caress or soothe her, Bruriah tends to require more physical soothing than most even considering the Sapphire Offering she bears. It is as if there were a deep pit inside her heart that is ferociously hard to fill. It haunts her dreams nightly, as those sorts of people tend to turn toward darker, unkind ways to fill what keeps them empty. She both fears being abandoned, as well as gaining the true love of others in part, due to the difficulty in retaining confidence in the face of her fears.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Emotional Healing: Due to her own trauma, Bruriah has honed her training in the Queenly Caste Craft of Emotional Healing. She is gifted in soothing even those that are not Bonded to her, regardless of gender. In her view, it is because trauma is not a part of the person that can be brushed under a rug, it must be confronted and iced or burned away, leaving new growth in emotional capability. For a Bonded soul, her Emotional Healing is even further precise, able to blunt the emotional pain attached to specific activities and phobias.
  • 2 Queen's Touch: Given that she thrives on nearly constant touch when able to receive it, Bruriah's skill is well above the expected in a Queen her age. She's learned to impart the Queen's Touch through kissing, gloved fingers, or even something as subtle as a brushing of shoulders or knees, which is often better for more stoic Glacians in public. Even those that do not care for their emotions teased out where others can see deserve respectful devotion.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Travel Craft: As a result of her poor health as a youth, Bruriah spent more time being shuffled places in carriages and by guards that could navigate the winds especially well. As a result, her practical skill never really took off, and even once she decided to try and tackle Travel Craft for a measure of independence, using her Offering Rank of the Winds often makes the Queen nauseous and suffering from migraines for a day or two afterward.
  • 2 Scrying: While skilled somewhat in scrying, the cost ends up being rather severe nosebleeds whether she's able to find what was sought or not. It makes her seldom attempt this particular Craft as the price truly isn't worth the gain much of the time.

    History:

The cold was the first thing Bruriah remembers, as her mother planned to leave her exposed to the still present chill of winter when she was born due to her strange appearance when born.  Early and small at her birth, it was only a Healer's intervention that kept the tiny infant alive that noticed the faint hint of the scent of Queen rising from her snow pale skin. Not many have memories of early childhood at all, but after being told the story in secrecy by the Healer that tended her mother years later, the memory of cold as trauma made sense. It had buried itself in her skin in those moments. Of course, Bruriah does not blame her mother, as the woman was afflicted with childbed depression and couldn't recall the event upon being asked days later. Bruriah's naming was handled by her father, who was the stepfather of her elder half-sisters. From the moment of conception, they resented her, and after Bruriah's birth, the number of servants in the nursery needed to be doubled on her father's demand, who was her first Bonded.

They blamed it on his being partially from a union from a parent outside of Glacia, the devotion and care that kept much of the bullying to less of a dangerous note than it could have been in those early years. Her sisters never hit her, or spoke unkindly in public; they always refrained from siding against Bruriah where any adults could see it, prodding her for being partially a relation to lesser(not really) Aristos from elsewhere. In truth, the children were frustrated and upset at the loss of their own father, Prince Mischa Corav, who had a fraught marriage with the Lady Rayla Garmi because of his constant straying from their marriage bed, so they acted out and blamed the recently born sister that did not share a father with them. While Bruriah's Queenly Caste made the hazing worse, it also allowed her to rise above her sister's constant picking, and by the time of her Birthright which deposited a stunning Cut Blood Opal into her hands, the two half elder sisters were suddenly halted by Mother Night's recognition of her greater closeness with the sibling they had despised.

While Bruriah could have paid the two back in kind, it was her mother's elegance and love for all three of her children, and her general excitement for the beginnings of Craft Lessons well above what her then Lighter Jewelled sister's received that eased the tensions in the Garmi household, as well as the maturing of her Warlord Prince brother, Neale, who bonded her as a child. He had no patience for the hazing despite being a few years younger than the two elder girls and demanded the expected Lion's share of attention from their parents.

In Queen's Craft, Bruriah received her tutelage from a cousin out of Vassa in service to Isyviel's court as was expected to some extent, and by the time Miina Kalas had been ruling Salla District for two years, she was assigned there to continue her learning of Queen's Craft and Protocol, thus leaving her sisters quite well in the dust of their bitterness. It was not until the young ladies were much older did they learn that the breaking up of their mother's first marriage was the fault near entirely of her first husband, making plain that apologies would have been wise.

Stubbornness meant that Bruriah did not receive what she wished and hoped for, however, but she lacked the time to dwell upon it due to the perfection the Lady Kalas demanded. Bruriah, being a rather optimistic young Queen and gifted plenty well enough not to need to worry about the strictures required of the Lighter Jewelled as part of the Silent War seeping into the icy landscape of Glacian life, devoted herself to everything required of her. She grew toward a reputation of a rather devout young woman with a thoughtful turn of speech as much as she was keenly impassioned.

Aware that there was a chance his daughter could be fairly dark jewelled, Prince Theodore Nurmi sought out the Warlord Prince Matias Saari to see to his Queen daughter's Virgin Night, aware that even the slightest mistake in this particular duty could harm her irreparably. The Warlord Prince had already gained a reputation of success with tending several other Virgin Nights after being discretely trained for them, despite the sheer impossible depth of his standing in the abyss, thus the logic of Prince Nurmi being that Prince Saari could keep his daughter safe. The matter was very quietly handled without a lot of fanfare and given that Bruriah had been Bonded to her brother since childhood, she was more fascinated by the older man's standing in the abyss and Caste as one might expect of a well taught Queen. An arrangement of a year to get the know Prince Matias to some degree and privacy were her only requests, given that he was several years her senior.

His being already Bonded, and even a father already made the interim period honestly easier, and Bruriah grew used enough to the signature of his Ebon Grey being near enough for a time when she was not occupied in learning, and the Warlord Prince tending his family first. Even Prince Neale eventually grew to accept the idea of another Bonded Warlord Prince 'hanging around' his sister, managing to gain a little refinement being in the older man's presence. In fact, everything went so very well that the only surprise was the sheer passion of a Warlord Prince that deep in the abyss.

Bruriah had expected it, but at the same time, she hadn't, not quite, having long considered the sensual side of herself almost a burden due to most people's reaction to how odd she looks. Matias however, did not make her feel odd when he touched her and made absolutely certain she didn't panic. She was appreciative enough that the 'night' had touched to the dawn before he'd managed to entirely tire her out, with her Blood Opal entirely intact. For two weeks Bruriah felt centred in herself in a fashion she never had.

Then her life felt to pieces. Shattered. Irreparably.

Just weeks after her Virgin Night, and before her scheduled Offering, grief struck her family in the form of accidental death. Both of her parents, on return from Goth on holiday for a wedding anniversary, perished in the mishandling of their travelling carriage through inclement weather. As a result, Bruriah's siblings were suddenly thrust in a fight over the wealth of the estate, to which the primary share had been left near solely to Bruriah and her brother, Neale. As a result, her Offering was delayed a year and a half due to mourning and stress from the legal difficulties.

Her evidence of mentorship with the Lady Kalas greatly assisted being able to hold on to her parent's wealth, while an aunt saw to it that her sisters were quietly married offer after the will contest so they might cease to be troublesome. Bruriah's relief and gratitude led her to offer a donation to her first charity, to which she has continued to contribute to this day. Her eventual Offering granted her a cut Sapphire, which eased some of the grief she'd felt at the loss of her father being still so recent at the time. Except, it wasn't the same as it would have been had her parents lived. The bright, Dark Jewel felt like a hollow consolation prize, as did her becoming an heiress unexpectedly.

Following the Lady Kalas' rise to the queenship of the entire Province of Ivalo spurred on a minor bit of ambition in Bruriah, to which she began to study actually ruling a court properly of her own. Following two years of study that some would consider rather gruelling, she was assigned the Court of Salla just two years ago. Having not the slightest interest in an upper-level Court beyond her place in Salla has allowed her to settle into Salla even further as a home, and continue the work that was begun by her predecessor, Lady Miina Kalas' eight years as its Queen. Elisif's death very recently has placed quite the depressing pallor over her days of late, but Bruriah is committed to being as much as a proper Queen in her memory ... perhaps minus much of the zealotry and use of collars in Salla very slowly.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

With a flicker of Craft, Bruriah lit a candle for each of her parents' memory, whispering a prayer quietly under her breath. The room was larger than it had been when she'd taken over the Queen's palace, having knocked out one of the walls to double the size of the space, as well as another wall to leave a glass window as large as the wall that had been removed. It eased the weight of the claustrophobia she'd felt when first touring the space years ago when first assigned to the Lady Kalas' tutelage. She still sent the occasional polite letter when not needing to report District business; if not for her luck in escaping her half-sisters, the wealth left to her by her parents would have been theirs despite their hatred of her birth father.

She'd been born with a looser version of the tightly coiled hair her father possessed, which had been a gift from a grandfather still living in Goth whom she occasionally spoke to. Only the colour was different, a pale blonde that was practically white that she cherished despite being teased for it. A heavy lump of sadness, however, had yet to ease; she'd been Bonded to the man with soft, pale brown hands that was as fond of his mint tea with honey and silk vests as she was her own very precise tastes in fashion. Softly, in a whisper, she sang softly, it was late, and Bruriah did not wish to disturb any of the sleeping.

"Papa? Can you hear me ...? May the light, of this flickering candle, illuminate the night the way your spirit, illuminates my soul..."

Her stormy blue eyes filled with tears as she watched the icy rain strike and slide down the window. "Papa, can you hear me? Can you see me? Papa, can you find me in the night? Are you near me? Papa, can you help me not be frightened?" She sighed and brushed the hint of tears from her eyes before they fell, not wishing to disturb the delicate kohl and silver around her eyes, making them look like stars at night for their odd colour.

"Looking at the skies, I seem to see a million eyes. Which ones are yours? Where are you now that yesterday, has waved goodbye and closed its doors?" A frown furrowed her lips as she moved to the piano, and pressed a single A in the sixth octave, softly, ever so softly. She did not need to play it, but the lonely, gentle sound in pairing with the rain just soothed her inability to sleep. Sitting down on the grand piano bench, she glided her fingers over the white polished wood of the piano, tapping the silver accents. The instrument had belonged to her father.

"The night is so much darker, the wind is so much colder ...the world I see is so much bigger; now that I'm alone," lean fingers brushed over the keys as she rocked forward, then back to settle herself with greater comfort upon the bench. Gently, lovingly, Bruriah played through the melody she had just sung. She wanted nothing more than to remove the core of grief from the elder man's passing, but a broken Bond was just that. Broken. The best she could do was tend it well as she'd been taught to do. It helped to see her brother share some of his traits, as well as the quiet, pleasant Bond they shared. The candles, the ferocious rain helped hold back the darkness at her center. It was perhaps why she had not blamed her mother for nearly killing her as an infant. Most of the time, she was not troubled by it, and not nearly so dangerously.

"The moon is twice as lonely, and the stars are half as bright ..."*

Leaning forward, she rested her head atop the piano and silently sat with her stormy eyes closed, loosing her heavy hair from its silken, wrapped confinement. Soon, Bruriah would need to be responsible and return to bed as it would be a very early morning and tending to Court business was more important than moping over those lost to her.
