For years, the Dark Religion has persecuted the Light Jeweled with its doctrine of stigmatization. Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Alek has had something of a charmed life, which has shaped his personality accordingly. Despite a rough start, Alek’s life has taught him that with enough work and faith, any obstacle can be overcome. He is a steady, respectable, experienced male who is willing to dig into the toughest tasks and put in long hours without need for recognition or reward. The honor of service is reward enough.

He may at first seem a man without much personality, living only to serve his Queen and Court. That first impression is not inaccurate, so much as incomplete. Alek very clearly separates work from play, as befits a man with an ambitious Queen who is going places. He will not allow foolishness or a lack of professionalism to reflect badly on her.

He is a stubborn man with strict standards and harsh consequences to infractions of them, but makes an effort not to take any flares of temper out on the undeserving. And anyone he takes a shine to will find in Alek a supportive and dedicated mentor for life. He had to make his way in life on merit and power alone, without wealth or family connection, and has marked sympathy for anything in the same boat. Alek still supports the Orphanage that once sheltered him, making regular donations from his salary and taking the time to mentor those children who make an effort to be faithful adherents of the Dark Religion despite their own unfortunate status.

Alek’s faith in the Dark Religion is a cornerstone of his life. It is what kept him strong when his mother died, able to rejoice in her return to the Darkness and chance for purity at last. It is what saved his soul and lifted him up from a life of poverty and ignominy. He is nearly as devoted to his spiritualism as he is to his Queen. Alek found the temper his caste is famous for early, sparked by the poverty of his childhood and his mother’s death, and it has ridden him closely ever since-particularly since a full descent to the Red. Alek will almost never exhibit the sudden feral edge that many of his caste-brothers do, because it is always with him, carefully sat on and disciplined. Alek considers blatant shows of temper and instability unworthy of one of the Mother’s Blessed: those worthy of a Dark Jewel should be able to cope with the heighted instinctual reactions it brings, or they would have earned a Light one. His habitual professionalism, his Queen, and his Religion are all leashes he has used to tame the beast. He communes with a Priestess regularly to help release his stronger emotions into the Darkness and has ever since his Birthright.

However, his Queen’s new bonded males have started to prick his temper in ways he hasn’t experienced since his youth. He doesn’t like sharing the Queen he’s been the sole Bonded male of for so long. Especially not with those he considers mostly beneath both himself and her. He has tried to be patient with them, for Miina’s sake, but if they don’t fall into line soon- well, he’s quite good at contingency planning. And just as ruthless when he has to be. Everything he does, he does for his Mother and his Queen, and he will fight for both with every bit of the skill and passion his nature has given him.

With Alek, it’s worth remembering that there’s nothing so dangerous as a virtuous man.

Likes:
  • Miina- It might sound obvious, but where some males resent the bond that ties them and the person who holds their leash, Alek has great affection for his Queen. Theirs is a bond built by time and trust, long days spent teasing each other like siblings and longer nights spent strategizing how best to take care of their Court and people.
  • Communion- Every time Alek is allowed to approach an Altar in one of the sacred caves and, with holy guidance, touch that which makes them Blood, he finds it an awe-inspiring and humbling experience. There is nothing else quite like that rush of fire and ice from the Abyss.
  • Skiing- Alek enjoys the rush and challenge of navigating a slope with nothing more than his reflexes and wits. It’s a break from the stresses of the Court that can be enjoyed by himself or with friends, as suits his preference.
Dislikes:
  • His light-Jeweled bond brothers- They are all bound by the Darkness to their Queen, but it hurts and angers him that they are all equal in Miina’s affections. He acknowledges Prince Parekh as a brother, but views her other males as akin to the family pets- sometimes cute and fluffy, but decidedly below the rest of them in the natural order of things.
  • Light-Jeweled Apologists- Attempts to make excuses for the light-jeweled get under Alek’s skin. To him, there is nothing to apologize for. Whether by deliberate misdeed or accident of birth, there is some reason Mother Night did not recognize them as trustworthy of darker Jewels and that is that.
  • Offenses to the Dark Religion- Alek is a very spiritual man and has lived his life by the tenets of the Dark Religion. He is worse than some Priestesses about scolding those who do not follow its dictates.
Fears:
  • For his Queen’s soul- Alek sees Miina’s latest bondings as both a test and a warning. He believes that the Darkness sent Prince Volkshund to her to test her commitment to the Religion of the Mother, and Lord Winters as a sign that she had failed her test. Miina is attracting weakness, treating it as strength, and it is beginning to worry and anger Alek in equal measure. He is terrified that others will see it and take advantage of his beloved Queen’s weakness.
  • For his surviving children- After the tragedy with Aja and Jyette, Alek fears letting down his remaining children. He’s afraid of relaxing his control and letting his sons’ flawed natures consume them, afraid he won’t be able to support his one Blessed child in the right way to let her shine as Mother Night intended.
  • The Territory Court- It is a respectful, bordering on reverent fear, but of course Alek fears the Court of the thrice-Blessed Gray and her trio of Ebon-Grays. He is highly motivated not to do anything to get on their bad side- or, though them, of Mother Night Herself.
Craft Strengths:
  • Managing Collar/Ring of obedience- Alek thoroughly approves of the collars as a useful tool to track and control the light-Jeweled, and has ventured to the Territory Court for special training in their wielding. He has shown great finesse with the collars’ effects and is proud to have such a non-lethal, yet effective tool in his arsenal. It fits right in with his Queen’s belief that the Light-Jeweled should not be abused for their flaws- if they are well behaved, then they have nothing to worry about, right?
  • Incite rage- Alek took extra training in this aspect of his caste when pursuing his position as Master of the Guard, seeing in it a way to enhance the strength of his forces at need. He is skilled at bringing his men to that fine line between reaching the Killing Edge and losing control of that power and temper- he needs effective fighters, not mindless berserkers.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Long-distance Communication Craft- Alek is most comfortable with things he can immediately see, taste and touch. For all the depth of his Red, Alek has trouble initiating and maintaining psychic threads outside of his own Court. He must handle any such threads through a subordinate, or his Queen.
  • Deception Craft- Alek is a Walord Prince and a straight-shooter. He says what he means and he means what he says, with the full force of his passion and instincts behind it. He literally couldn’t tell a lie with Craft to save his life.

History:

Aleksanteri was born a laundress’ son. Magda had spent her youth in an Orphanage of Light and, lacking many other options, gone straight into what work she could get from there. She tried to do her best for him, but most of his memories of her feature a worn woman with a sad expression who hugged him a lot and told bedtime stories in a tired voice. She died when he was five –just never woke up one morning- and  Alek found himself taken to the same Orphanage his mother had grown up in, no one expecting much from a Rose witch’s son.

The Priestesses who ran the Orphanage tried to keep what order they could, but as any place filled with children, it was prone to fits of chaos and casual cruelty from those who either didn’t know any better or were bitter over their unwanted fate. Alek learned to fight early and often, and to who those things and people he valued close if it didn’t want them broken or missing. He did his best to show contrition when called on the carpet by the Priestesses, however, the little Warlord Prince honestly wanting to be good and help. He embraced their teachings of the Dark Religion with all the fervor of that child who was convinced that if he were a Good Boy, his life would get better and someone would want him again.

Alek would be a much different man today if he hadn’t turned out to be that one-in-a-million child who actually got the fairy tale ending that confirmed his hopes and faith. When he left his Birthright Ceremony with a gleaming Opal, it sent the shocked Priestesses into a frenzy and provoked a flurry of visits from hopeful prospective parents, all eager to welcome the power and potential of a Dark-Jeweled Warlord Prince into their family. The Queen of Ivalo finally ended the confusing time, stepping in to claim him as a Ward of the Court.

If Alek was disappointed not to have a mother of his own again, he quickly forgot the feeling under the slew of lessons and training he received as a Ward. He was soon too busy trying to prove his worth by mastering all the skills needed to succeed in a Court and trying to forge those social connections he hadn’t been born with, yet would be crucial to his future success.

Upon making his Offering at twenty and earning a full descent, he signed on with the District Court of Salla. He would spend the next decade there steadily working his way up the ranks and making his reputation as a smart, dependable male. He met and married a lovely witch of appropriate standing at 22, producing four children with her.

At 28, he proudly accepted the Queen’s invitation to take up the post of Master of the Guard. For the first time in his life, he felt as though he’d finally achieved something and could sit back and rest on his laurels a bit- he had a beautiful wife, loving children, and a position to be proud of. Life didn’t get much better. But Mother Night wasn’t done blessing him yet.

At 30, he discovered his Queen in Miina Kalas, a trainee in one of Salla’s village courts. Theirs was always a relationship that was a warm, caring bonding, a connection that spoke more like an older brother to a younger sister, than any sort of passionate sexualized bonding that sometimes occurred between Queens and their males. He would have asked to be released from his current contract then to serve her, but Miina was still in training herself and Alek had bother a family to provide for and years of blood and sweat invested in that Court. After a few long talks, the pair agreed that Alek would remain were he was while Miina continued to learn and grow as a Queen, waiting for the day Miina was ready for a higher position and Alek could use his contacts to help her achieve it.

As it turned out, he didn’t have that long to wait. Four years later, she was ruling the village she’d once served in. Two years after that, when Miina was ready and his own current contract had been completed, he bent every trace of his influence and persuasive skill to convincing the brothers he’d led for the last decade that Miina would make the better Queen for Salla District.

He has never regretted that choice, and been proud to serve as her protector and advisor ever since- through their eight years at Salla, and after, returning full-circle to the Province Court of his youth.

Unfortunately, in the midst of sunshine, a little bit of rain must fall- a first for Alek. Despite his professional triumphs, personal tragedy struck when three of his children only received Light Birthrights, with no hope of a blessed descent.

Alek was devastated, unable to make sense of it- if the parents were Dark (and he had always believed that, somewhere, his own father wore a Blessed Jewel), surely the children should be as well? Had it been some failing on their part, that their children weren’t worthy? His wife was more philosophical about the matter, but it took Alek long hours of meditation and consults with the Court’s Priestess to come to terms with what had happened. It was not his fault, it was not his children’s fault- it was simply how nature had made them. And Mother Night could sense, as they could not, that some people were just not strong enough to handle the Abyss as they should be. That was why their Darker brethren had to provide the care and control the weak ones lacked. One could love them despite their inborn flaws, but one should never forget those flaws existed.

Alek finally came to acceptance, trying his best to be a steady, guiding influence a Red Jewel should be. He still had his Queen and his career, of course. There was no question that he wouldn’t continue to serve as Miina’s Master of the Guard when she took Ivalo, though his wife had tired of Court life and wished to live a quieter existence in the country. They parted on good terms, wishing one another well. Miina was a good Province Queen, steady, faithful and strong, She had one of the finest and strongest Priestesses to guide her rule, and things should have continued smoothly forever.

Then his protégé bonded other men- foreigners, flawed souls. In her wish to be a good Queen, Miina seemed to lose her way in the Dark Religion. Alek did what he could to support and guide her, but he had his own problems: the fiancé of his eldest daughter persuaded her to run away on the Underground, that the collars were wrong instead of meant to prevent behavior like this. But Jerrik somehow surprised and killed Alek’s former wife, who held the family’s collars, and the couple ran for Nharkava. Alek heard the news and gave chase, but too late. The pair and their baby daughter had been abandoned by their “guide” and he only found their frozen bodies in a snowbank, nearly covered. It was a sign, he decided, to be more vigilant.

After a few days’ break to mourn for his ex-wife and wayward daughter, Alek returned to Court with control of his remaining children’s collars now in hand and a renewed determination to save Miina’s Court. Letting the Light-Jeweled run amuck only led to disaster and he would do whatever it took to prevent tragedy for his Queen- even if it meant going against her misgivings. He was doing it in the name of the Dark Religion and for her own good- and the first law was not obedience.

Character in Play:

Miina was a good Queen, a strong and Blessed daughter of the Darkness. She had had Alek’s faith and respect for many years, never had had a problem with accepting advice as some willful young Queens did. He’d stood as friend, protector, brother in all but blood since before she’d formed her first Court. And for many years, he’d served her, she’d served Glacia and the Dark Religion, and all had run smoothly.

Then her other males began showing up. He’d viewed the Nharkavan as a good omen, a sign that spread of the Dark Religion into their neighbor was right and true. Ganaraj was strength to stand at Miina’s side with him. But then it had gone so terribly wrong. That barely-housebroken Rose had shown up, rejected the Queen the man ought to have been on his knees in gratitude to serve despite his irreparably flawed nature, and Miina welcomed him with the same affection as the one who’d been faithful, who’d earned Mother Night’s blessing. The same for the sweet, but pitiful, warlord chef. One didn’t have to be the Mother to see his unsuitability for Her true gifts, yet Miina cried over having to keep him collared and under control as his nature demanded. And try as he might, Alek couldn’t understand why.

What, then, was the point of serving? Of being worthy of Mother Night’s favor? The whole thing was just wrong, horrifyingly wrong, and the more Alek thought about it, the more he despaired for his Queen’s soul. And he didn’t know what to do. She wasn’t listening to him as she once did, and his was only one voice among four- he needed another to add weight.

It was this state of events that had led him to his current position… kneeling at the feet of the wrong Kalas. Alek grieved the necessity, but found the resolve in his heart strong. If anyone could help them, save his heart-sister’s soul and put things right, it was surely the second-highest Priestess in all of Glacia.

“Please.” He implored with all the calm conviction of a true son of Glacia, staring reverently up at Her favored daughter of the Darkness. “I fear my Queen has lost her way, and need your counsel, Priestess. Help me guide her back to the true faith.”

You must adjust your Dark:Light ratio to support another Dark before Aleksanteri can be moved into play.
