Stay Awhile and Listen
« on: Dec 31, 18, 02:33:51 PM »
Today, he was visiting the Ardath.  The last time he had been here was to do a 'small' concert.  This time he was here on 'official' business.  He'd heard of how Dhemlan was going to try something new - that something being an election to determine who would rule Dhemlan.  Frankly, he thought it a brilliant idea.

But he wasn't here to announce that he was going to run, even if he was technically capable of doing so.  No, he was here to apply for something else.

The ability to make sure that the candidates got their messages out there.  The ability to make sure that the people heard their voices, and saw the debates, (because of course there would be debates), and could witness history in the making.  He wanted to put his mark on that.  Who better than someone whose entire existence revolved around the public in the first place?

The parliament building was not his favorite building in the Territory.  The acoustics here were terrible.  That was really why he didn't like it.  If Dhemlan was going to make a building which would house the very government, shouldn't it go all the way and make sure the acoustics were worthy of the sound the government would make?  That, however, was probably just his inner musician complaining.  He was willing to admit it was a personal quirk.

Settling into a chair in a small lobby to await his 'turn', he pulled out a book and settled some glasses on his nose.  No need to strain his vision while he let his mind wander through the adventures of fantastical Dhemlanese warriors, after all.  Reading this book might just help him remain relaxed while he waited to see if he could land this position.

Hell, he really wanted this position.  It surprised him, actually, just how much he wanted it.

His mother thought him a bit silly - after all, he might be beloved by his fans but the Territory at large was still going to see him as a Half Breed first.  That was fair, he'd always said.  But his heritage didn't have to hold him back - and he could make of his life something to be an example to others why they shouldn't concern themselves with such stupid categorizations.

They might still not allow you to do this, considering..

That didn't matter.  For his little sister, for himself, he was going to try.

Joana’s head was pounding. It had been ever since early morning when she got to her desk this morning, in the offices she had been granted as the representative of Ilbeda in the Executive branch of Parliament, and seen the giant stack of dossiers. Within each was the resume, qualifications, background checks and other sundry information about the men and women who had applied to be the spokespeople of the election. Joana—foolishly—had volunteered to be the person to choose who among these should go on to make their case before the Executives.

She didn’t want to be away from Ilbeda for long this time and had hoped this would take a few days. That had been over a week ago and here she was, on the last day of interviews, with an ice-pick twisting its way into the back of her skull and a musician in her que.

Oh, she had heard of this fellow. Who hadn’t? His tunes were catchy and his shows rather legendary for melting the heartstrings of even the most cynical of people. But a musician as the man meant to sell this election to the people?

Actually, that may not be that bad of an idea. If he can sell love, why couldn’t he sell giving the people a choice for their future?

That thought made her pause before dismissing the folio. Instead, she added it to the pile of maybes with a sigh.

Two Days Later

The day of the interviews had started early and Jo had prepared in advance and taken a brew her Healer had given her to avoid a repeat of the migraine from hell of a few days earlier. Today she sat in her office chair in an elegant pair of black slacks, an ocean-blue blouse, and a long, flowing shawl of light linen. Her hair was pulled back elegantly but practically and she had opted for a pot of coffee instead of just a cup.

The whole morning had been packed with interview after interview and none had left a particularly good taste in her mouth. The coffee helped in that regard too.

Now, only a few candidates were left and the next one waited just outside. With a sigh, Joana stood and went to the door. There were escorts in the room for her safety, of course, but it was a chance to stretch her legs.

She poked her head out into the hallway and spotted him immediately. “Lord Davolos, you’re up.”

As soon as he stood, Joana held out her hand to him in greeting. “My name is Joana Palomo, Queen and Representative of Ilbeda. Please, follow me and make yourself comfortable. Would you care for some coffee or any other refreshment?”

My but the Queen is lovely.  He'd been nervous when the door opened and he got a whiff of a Queen.. but there was no stirring.  No instantaneous need.  Thank the Night and all her stars.

Carefully he rose to his feet, tucking his glasses away and then reaching out to accept her hand.  He did not shake it.  He bent low over it, touching his head to her knuckles.  "Lady Palomo.  A pleasure to meet you."

At her signal that he could rise and follow, he did.  "A bit of water would be lovely, Lady Palomo.  Thank you."  Let it not be said that he did not know his manners, no matter his playboy reputation of years past or his more calm demeanor of the last two hundred years.  Well, almost two hundred years.

There was no fidgeting.  No reaching for something that would soothe him - because to all eyes he did not seem as if he needed to be soothed.  He was a man that could stand in front of a very large crowd and croon about love and tragedy and hope while never losing his temperament or manner.

Standing in front of the Ghost Queen herself was hardly more terrifying than that.  "May I just say that I am quite happy that you were willing to consider me, Lady Palomo.  I am aware that a musician might seem an odd choice at first glance, and I am happy to explain my vision if you would like."

Who better to get the Territory behind such a revolutionary concept as an open election than to have someone that everyone knew?  Who better than someone who knew exactly how to reach into the hearts and minds of a crowd of listeners than someone who had done it for as long as he had?
