* Plot Information for Dhemlan, Kaeleer

Dhemlan has become a land divided. The corruption that Witch’s Purge wiped out in the rest of the Realms was preserved by the well-meaning sacrifice of the territory’s Ebon Gray Queen. As such, the corruption here has only intensified. The tension between the Landen and the Blood who were meant to care for them is fast reaching a boiling point.

>Personality

Personality:

Rayen Sandoval has always been her father’s daughter; and overtime grew to be a fair reflection of her uncle as well. She attributed her love of water to both of the men in her life and all of her skills aboard a ship to both of them as well. Despite her focus on her career she has never forgotten where she has come from and makes every effort to visit her mother and uncle when she is near their port of call.

She is a witch who possess a quick wit and tongue, and she is also graced with a clever mind. She considers herself a trailblazer in many ways and never manages to stumble upon the path well-worn in an attempt to find a solution to a problem. Rayen usually thinks, and acts, outside of the box and outside of expectations. She is the first to admit that she’s not the smartest person but she has never tried to be; she’s left lessons and schools for those better suited for it and instead embraced the hands on learning experience she achieved on her uncle’s ship.

Being a pirate has become Rayen’s identity but it has never consumed her beyond recognition. To Rayen it is her legacy and she’s embraced it, and it allowed her to become closer to her uncle, and provided the means with which to reunite her parents. Rayen has never seen the world as black and white, wrong and right, but instead believes that it is painted in shades of gray. Pirates are not the evil forces that storybooks would have you believe, but nor are they romantic swashbuckling and misunderstood heroes. Frankly, they’re often men and women who have nowhere else to turn and instead discover a strange family aboard a ship.

Rayen believes in true love, and other fanciful notions, but she’s the first to laugh at her own fantasies. Despite being a woman susceptible to love she has never successfully found it outside of her family, and certainly not the kind of love that poets write about.

She appreciates those who can match her wit. It was rumored that she was so amused at a captured ship’s captain’s attempts to spar wits with her that she released the entire ship and allowed them to keep their goods, but not before taking the captain to her bed and enjoying other gifts that he had to offer.  The rumor led to other captains trying their hands at similar tactics only to fall short of Rayen’s mark, which in more than one case ended with them walking the plank.

Challenges are something that Rayen actively seeks and she has always risen to a challenge. Rayen is rarely intimidated by a challenge and as a long lived woman believes in patience above all else, even when hope might seem lost. She spent sixty years in prison but never once believed that she would stay there for eternity, and instead focused with a determined patience on finding a way out of the cell.

Likes:
  • Challenges: Whether it be planning a jail break or serving on a flying ship Rayen has always found pleasure in chasing the challenges. There’s little that Rayen wouldn’t attempt if it meant that there was a challenge to be won or overcome. The fight isn’t worth fighting if it’s an easy victory; whether it is on the ocean or in the bedroom.
  • Command: Something that Rayen learned about herself over the course of the six years she spent on the Skyjammer was that she could not tolerate anything short of commanding a ship. It had been centuries since she had served beneath a Captain and she much preferred to be in control of her own ship than to be issuing someone else’s orders, no matter how competent.
  • Inside Jokes: It’s the levity that Rayen likes the most, a way to lighten up any situation. Over the years she has established any number of inside jokes with those few people that she has come to call as friend. Tiberius and Rayen share a significant amount of inside jokes, including one around stolen boots, but equally she shares a fair number with her second in command Davi.

Dislikes:
  • Being Landlocked: Rayen had always grown up close to the coast and even before her offering had spent most of her time at sea. The ship has always been where she is most comfortable but she occasionally enjoys shore leave in port cities throughout Kaeleer, or on any of the charming islands in Dhemlan, Scelt or other coastal areas. However when she becomes landlocked, without a direct line of sight to the sea, she begins to feel constricted and constrained. The worst has always been when she’s been locked away with the sea too far away to hear, smell or even taste on the wind.
  • Smugglers: They make for the best prey when Rayen is hunting in Kaeleer’s oceans, but she has always disliked smugglers. She founds them to be the scum of the Territory and trading in goods that she would rather not consider. Rayen goes out of her way to attack known smuggling vessels, even if there are richer merchant prey to be chasing in nearby seas because of her dislike for their business practices and especially their entire lack of morals.

  • Odds: Rayen is a woman who is governed by her instincts. As such when it comes to knowing the odds or survival, or the odds of winning, or just the odds in general she doesn't care a whit for them. Ekain has always relied on his ability to calculate, to a limited certainty, of a risk was worth the payout and he and Rayen are always at odds over the odds. And over time the odds have proven to Rayen that they're never in her favor, and in turn she's proven that she can beat the odds time and time again, except those times when it really mattered and she's wound up in jail to pay what's come due with her many temptations of fate.

Fears:
  • Shipwrecked: The idea of losing her ship, ironically named the Valiant, has always been a great fear with Rayen. For a witch who embraces and takes challenges she rarely does so when it comes to sailing her ship in unchartered or unknown waters. Over the years she has sunk any number of vessels and run even more aground during dog fights. One of her greatest fears is seeing the Valiant run aground to become just another of the ship graveyards.
  • Love: Although she believes in fanciful fairytales of love at first sight and happy endings Rayen has learned the hard way that love cannot be cast as a shield of protection. She witnessed the beautiful love that her parents shared and always dreamed of someday having that kind of relationship. But when the Purge struck it tore her parents apart and left her mother a widow with a broken heart. She’s witnessed how it has changed her mother from a bright woman to a shell of who she had once been, the happiness torn from her entirely. If happiness and life were the sacrifices made for love Rayen would be happier to spend her life alone, rather than to risk her heart and happiness.
  • Losing Anela: Despite not meeting her younger sister until she was a fully grown woman Anela has become a huge part of Rayen’s life. The difference in age hasn’t proven to be a challenge for either of the women and they’ve quickly managed to become one another’s best friends. Knowing that she’s lost a brother that she never met has made her appreciate Anela even more, but also has made her become over protective.
Craft Strengths:
  • Compulsion: A Pirate’s arsenal of craft weapons are not always traditional or expected. Early on in her career she learned that her compulsion skills against lighter Jewels were quite successful. Her Uncle encouraged her to focus her efforts on training up her Compulsion capabilities since it could be an unusual weapon to pull from her arsenal. Over time she has avoided many a bloody battle by using Compulsion to get her way instead. It also was the key to escaping jail the second time she was locked away.
  • Power Bolts: Every Pirate does need a traditional weapon in their repertoire and Rayen showed an early strength when it came to power bolts.  The concentrated efforts in the bolts were something she found easy, even natural, and built into her primary tool of warfare. They’ve proven to be a great ranged attack for the pirate as well.
  • Stealth Craft*: Rayen is well known on the high seas as a Pirate who can vanish without a trace, and while she'd like to pretend that was due to her sailing skills, the truth is she has an uncanny ability with stealth craft. It's something she's developed over several hundreds of years and uses to the advantage of her ship and crew. Stealth with a ship is no easy feat but that is where her skill set comes in.
    (* Thanksgiving Shop purchase 2018)

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Social Craft: It would be easier to use than compulsion, and often more effective but despite learning compulsion she failed to ever master social craft. It has proven to be a difficult challenge for Rayen who cannot rely on Compulsion each time that she needs to convince someone else to do something she needs. Despite her attempts to master it she failed to do so.
  • Communication:  Certainly she is capable of making her voice seem louder when necessary and delivery orders, but that’s not what she’s found challenging. The actual art of communicating through threads rather than with one’s on tongue often left her mute, a challenge for any captain. It often forces her to rely on her second in command to do much of her communicating for her.
  • Empathetic Craft: Rayen has learned to rely on her own understanding of emotions, rather than any use of craft to decipher them. Though witches are not expected to have strengths in such craft even the most minor of sensing techniques eludes Rayen's abilities. And it is often critcial, as a Captain, to be able to gauge the reactions of her crew. Reading people physically had proven a far easier tactic than trying to read them psychically.

(Sister) Anela Sandoval (b.  10 BP), Yellow - Rose witch
(Brother) Hugo Sandoval (b. 19 BP), White - Rose Warlord (deceased)

History:

One wasn’t born a Pirate, per se.

Though they could be born to a pirate’s legacy, and it was as close as a girl could get to being born a pirate. Rayen’s memories of her father were scarce. What little she could remember of the man was that he was a wanderer, an explorer and a sailor of some reputation. As a young girl in Dhemlan she was visited infrequently and without schedule by her father, who always gifted her with a treasure or a trinket from his latest adventure. In fact there had been an entire shelf in her childhood home dedicated to those trinkets and treasures; later she had a sea chest with a false bottom where she had buried those artifacts, unwilling to be separated from her the memories.

As a young girl Rayen believed her father to be a merchant of some variety, but the truth was bound to be far more exciting and fascinating for a young girl already full of fanciful notions. Her mother always complained, with good nature, that Rayen’s imagination was fanciful and bound to get her in trouble. Shortly following her Birthright she’d overheard an argument between her parents. Her mother had been begging her father to spend more time with their daughter; and in return her father insisted that she was better off without his influence in her life. He pointed out her wild ways and vivid imagination, blaming himself for those traits within his only child. Rayen had wanted to shout that she wanted him and his influences! But something told her to mind her tongue at that moment. It was that evening, through the course of that fight, when Rayen learned the truth about her father. Though it was not only her father but encompassed her Uncle as well – they were Pirates. For a young girl with a whimsical imagination there was nothing more thrilling and inspiring.

The first time that her mother caught her playing pirates with the neighbor’s children, sticks in hand and sparring back and forth over a stone wall in the garden, she had been both distressed and mortified. Her attempts in explaining to an eleven year old that she could not play such games were lost on Rayen. The young girl could not understand how her games could ever endanger her father or family. Ultimately it was Rayen’s excitement that betrayed her father and uncle. During their next shore leave the Navy swept down upon them, and captured her father while her uncle managed to escape. When Rayen heard the news she ran away towards the shore intent to find the first boat that would take her to the pirates. She wanted to rally them to save her father and thought that they would care enough for one of their own to do so. Before she could make contact with any of the boats she was stopped by her neighbor, a boy several years older than her, named Ekain Petit. They had been friends for as long as Rayen could remember, and he’d always picked her first to be a member of his pirate crew when given the chance. Ekain promised her that one day he would help her find her Uncle Ghent, but for now she needed to grow up strong in order to save him; and the best thing she could do was cling to his memory like the last leaf on a tree in the autumn.

Rayen took his words far more seriously than he had ever likely intended; and he was pressured into becoming her tutor in all things that no young girl should learn. By the time she was ready for her Offering she could swing a sabre with deadly efficiency, swim faster and further than any boys of her own age, and could tie a knot that even craft struggled to unravel.

Upon receiving her Descent, the beautiful Sapphire, she kissed her mother goodbye. Having pressured Ekain into acting the role as her companion she set off to find the first merchant ship that she could find. Instead of sailing with the surname of Sandoval she took her mother’s maiden name for a time, serving as Rayen Roldan. She spent several years gaining her sea legs, and as she made a name for herself as a truly competent sailor she began to seek out the pirates with a quiet efficiency that spoke to her careful planning.

Despite her attempts to locate the pirates they instead found her when they’d boarded the merchant ship on which she was sailing. The skirmish between the merchants and pirates was short lived and halfhearted at best. Those who served the merchant did not make enough money to risk their lives and would sooner risk their liveliness than their life. As the Pirates began to search the ship for the riches it carried Rayen stepped forward, and presented herself to the Pirates. She declared her relationship to the Sandoval brothers, and requested an audience with the Pirate’s Captain. Ekain had stepped forward, a touch in her shadow, to stand by her side though he seemed less confident than she was the Captain approached.

Years and time had little effect on aging when it came to the long lived reasons, but the sea’s impact was another story entirely. Even so she would have recognized her Uncle Ghent even in the darkened depths of the ocean, and he her. He tried his best, for her mother’s sake, to talk her out of the path that she sought but eventually welcomed her and Ekain as members of his crew.

It took years for Rayen to finally convince her Uncle to rescue her father from the jail in which he had been sent to rot. It had taken time for Rayen to identify the location of the jail but she had managed that, without raising flags, while serving aboard the merchant ship. The attempt to rescue her father was Rayen’s first jail break experience, but it foreshadows the many more to come in her future. Despite the success her father was not the man he had once been. He’d been broken to his Offering in addition to the perfect torture of solitude and years exposure to incarceration. It was clear that her father’s place was no longer at sea but instead besides her mother. Rayen delivered Bautista Sandoval to her mother with a fair sum of money that Rayen had saved up, and felt a keen sense of delight in having the opportunity to reunite her parents. It would take Bautista Sandoval years to recover before he could manage a healthy relationship with his wife, brother and daughter.

Rayen fought hard to rise through the ranks on her Uncle’s ship, the pirate ship ironically named the Valiant. Captain Ghent was intent not to show her any favoritism and, in fact, pushed her harder and further than any other member of his crew. She was set grueling task with deadlines that were near possible to achieve, but she always managed to complete the tasks much to the surprise of her contemporaries.  After fifty long years her Uncle finally made Rayen his second in command, and began to slowly relinquish control of the Valiant to Rayen bit by bit.

On Rayen’s two-hundredth birthday she was given her Uncle’s ship and command when he decided to retire to a quiet sea side village, and in turn she made Ekain, her childhood friend, her second in command. It was an easy decision given the incredible loyalty he had shown her over the years, but also because he had become an exceptional sailor in his own right. If he had left the Valiant in search of his own fortune it was likely that he would have captained a ship scores of years earlier.

Rayen’s reputation preceded her and earned her remarkable leverage within the pirate community, especially given the legacy that she carried with her as well.  Despite that there was also a price to pay when one achieved infamy. She was not surprised when she began to become hunted by the Navy, but then they set their golden boy upon her, Kur’noz Mercado, an Ebon Gray Warlord Prince. Rayen remained one step ahead of him for a period of time until he cornered her in a port tavern after she had chosen to give her ship a well-deserved shore leave. After what proved to be a truly vicious fight something else erupted between them;  a passion unlike any other than Rayen had tasted in her young life. Later she would say that it was worth being jailed, that first time, to have enjoyed that particular evening.

As she was already well acquainted with the Dhemlan jails it didn’t take long for Rayen to arrange for an escape. This time it only took her four months compared to the years it had taken her to break her father out of jail, and she was reunited with the Valiant and it’s temporary captain, Ekain Petit. It seemed that Captain Petit continued to maintain faith in his childhood friend and knew already of her exploits to help her father years ago.

Rayen’s tactics changed after being caught. She stopped blanket attacking ships and learned the art of striking the right ship at the right time, which allowed her the opportunity to lay low when necessary. It had become difficult to determine when she would strike but the income would always be worth every moment that her crew had in down time, sometimes it went as long as years before they struck again, and with the Ebon Gray Warlord Prince missing there were few who could challenge Rayen’s business endeavors. There were members of the crew who grew restless, often signing up with other ships while the Valiant made berth or sailed the seas without prompting an attack, but most of the crew were loyal to their Captain and her business model.

All good things had to come to an end, and when Kur’noz returned to Dhemlan under a new name, Tiberius Octavian, he was contracted once more to find Rayen. With the Ebon Gray Warlord Prince back on the seas the challenges of Rayen’s business became greater. And once again she enjoyed being caught by the Warlord Prince, in fact both of them enjoyed the experience again, and once more she was deposited in a prison and left to rot.

Once more she managed to escape from the prison cell and reunite with the Valiant.

It would be another few hundred years before she ran into the Warlord Prince for a third time. But the anticipation was sinfully delightful for the witch, even if she dreaded another spell in the Dhemlan prisons. This time she had tempted fate by kidnapping a District Queen for ransom, having pushed herself and her boundaries further and further over the last couple hundred years. High seas robbery had begun to bore her with its simplicity after all. Plus, the Queen had tempted her with a hugely expensive private yacht and not enough guards to scare off a pirate ship. This time Tiberius took his time in bringing Rayen to the jail and managed to distract her from the fate ahead during those long nights spent between tangled sheets.

Dhemlan had learned its lesson though, and this time the jail was maximum security, proven to be a challenge for even talented Rayen to escape from. This time it proved to be far more difficult than the earlier prisons, leaving Rayen locked away for nearly three-hundred years until the Purge struck. Captain Petit had attempted to launch several rescue attempts during the course of those years but never to any avail and crew of the Valiant had begun to take up residence in lower security prisons at various points in the Territory.

The Purge killed her father, who she hadn’t seen since she’d been locked away, and created chaos within the prison, with the dead, dying and broken. Though the Territory had been well protected by the sacrifice of its Ebon Gray Queen those on the fringes had not felt the total security of her protection. Rayen had figured out how to ride out the storm a moment too late, despite all her experience in life and stormy seas, and sacrificed her Sapphire to the Purge.

The jail break didn’t come from her crew or even Ekain this time, nor was it her Uncle or Mother, but from the most unpredictable of sources – the Ebon Gray Warlord Prince himself. Rayen agreed to join his crew and even managed to stay on as a member for six years before deserting and returning to her rightful place at the helm of the Valiant. Rayen left with a mocking love letter to Tiberius, though she herself believed in love it was clear that he did not, and luckily for the witch she had never truly engaged her heart with him, just her lust and friendship. In the process of her escape she’d stolen a pair of boots from the Warlord Prince, an inside joke that was several hundred years old, and proceeded to take a reckless, but memorable, departure from the Skyjammer by diving over the side of the flying ship in the middle of the night.

She first reunited with her family and was happily surprised to learn that she had a sister and a brother, born before the Purge. The devastating news came when her Uncle had to explain that her father and brother had been killed that night. Rayen took several months to stay at home, help her mother and get to know her sister, Anela. But before long Ekain, ever loyal, found her before she could find him and the Valiant. Their reunion was boisterous and full of warmth and joy, happy to have found one another again after the Purge and the years of Rayen’s incarceration. Ekain begged her to return to take her rightful place as Captain and though they argued, for Rayen felt that he had earned the post and it was no longer her’s to take, Ekain won out. When Anela begged her older sister to join the crew Rayen outright refused her; her sister was young, though older than Rayen had been, but had none of the experiences to recommend her that Rayen had at her age. The true reasoning over denying Anela a post on her ship was in consideration to their mother, who only had Uncle Ghent and Anela to lean on for support.

Anela showed she was every bit Bautista’s daughter when she chose to stowaway on the Valiant and defy Rayen’s orders. She was given the opportunity to prove herself in a short amount of time and Anela stepped up to the challenge, shadowing her sister’s every move and mannerism.

Since the Purge the Valiant has appeared and disappeared like a ghost ship, and has become something of Kaeleerian legend. Though it always seemed to be second most famous to the Skyjammer, but without a gimmick of being able to fly they stood no chance to prove themselves to be the more infamous ship. During that time Anela worked her way through the crew and was most recently given the role of Lieutenant aboard the ship, a junior Lieutenant to the man with whom she’s been attempting to hide a relationship with. Since the night where she disappeared over the side of the ship Rayen has not seen Tiberius or the Skyjammer but she has taken great pleasure in tracking his exploits.

The wind billowed in the sails as the Valiant cut through the choppy waters of Kaeleer’s seas. The sky remained clear without a wisp of cloud on the horizon but the wind that was picking up off the ocean indicated that would change before nightfall. Rayen was already eager to face her first storm again having missed the control of the helm during the magnificent squalls that Kaeleer loved to throw at her.

”Captain.” Her senior lieutenant approached. He had not served on the Valiant when she had captained the ship hundreds of years ago and instead had been recruited to the position by Ekain himself.

”Make your report, Lieutenant.” Rayen said as she stepped away from the railing.

The strictures that were in place aboard the Valiant were more akin to the Navy than a standard pirate ship, but the ship’s culture was simply: work hard, play hard. Rayen had been pleased that not everything had changed while she had been separated from her ship.  They were three days out to sea and her place at the helm had felt as natural to the crew as it had to her.

”The men have found a stowaway amongst the general stores.” The Lieutenant stepped aside to reveal  two men holding the arms of a wet form whose clothes were ill fitting. “Requesting permission to administer the standard ten lashes-“

”No!” The Lieutenant’s request was cut short by Rayen’s sudden declaration.

Rayen passed the stunned Lieutenant, and grasped the dirty chin of the stowaway, tilting the woman’s face into the sunlight. There was no denying the resemblance between Captain and stowaway, even if the Captain’s anger hadn’t given anything away. “What in the Darkness are you doing on my ship? I’m sure I made myself clear that you were not welcomed here.”

The look of hurt that passed across the woman’s face cut into Rayen but she held her ground. “I’m here now. I want to serve. What would you do? Throw me overboard?” The woman retorted.

“I told you no before. You are too bloody young and inexperienced to be aboard this ship. And evidently too immature to take an order!” Though Rayen had only known her sister for months it felt like much longer, after all, Anela was a reflection of Rayen in more than shared features and looks.

By then they had gathered a small crowd of Rayen’s crew, and Ekain was picking his way across the deck, having being roused from sleep by the concerns of the crew.

”You were centuries younger when you first served.” Anela returned.

Rayen practically growled with frustration. “I was trained and prepared for the reality aboard the ship.” She didn’t add that the entire purpose of becoming a pirate had been to rescue her father, their father! It wasn’t a point worth making in this particular argument.

”Ladies.” Ekain calmly stepped between the two women. He’d had more of a chance to get to know Anela than Rayen had, given his continued visits to her Mother and their childhood village. “You have quite the audience for this family reunion. Let’s take it to the Captain’s quarters.” Rayen finally looked up and saw the crew gathered around.

”Back to your posts. Lieutenant Revez, you have the command.” The senior lieutenant, who had stood awkwardly by while the Captain and stowaway argued, snapped to attention and began barking orders.

The afternoon proved challenging for both Rayen and Anela, with Ekain doing his best to mediate their continued arguments. The problem, he pointed out without hesitation, was that they were too similar. Eventually Rayen and Anela came to the agreement that the younger Sandoval sister would serve until the next port of call. If she could prove herself to be capable and not a burden to the ship Rayen would extend a contract to her.
