* Plot Information for Dhemlan, Kaeleer

Dhemlan has become a land divided. The corruption that Witch’s Purge wiped out in the rest of the Realms was preserved by the well-meaning sacrifice of the territory’s Ebon Gray Queen. As such, the corruption here has only intensified. The tension between the Landen and the Blood who were meant to care for them is fast reaching a boiling point.

Distinguishing Features: Gree's mixed blood shows up the straightness of her hair but not the color. A faint gold shine marks her eyes as well; otherwise she looks like a full-blooded Scelt.

Personality

Personality:
There are reasons Gree Carey’s ship is named after a sword. She sees herself as having much in common with an ornate weapon: they are both beautiful, timeless, and capable of being incredibly useful or incredibly dangerous depending on the situation at hand. Outwardly, she’s a reserved and mysterious woman who enjoys her privacy and discourages uninvited interruptions. She enjoys the respect that comes from being a little scary and unknown, but prefers to speak softly and carry a big stick, so to speak. She’s not above displays of power or showy acts of vengeance, but she prefers to have to resort to these only when absolutely necessary. It’s more enjoyable by far to work off of reputation. People tend to think she’s far more prickly and vindictive than she is, but she allows and even encourages this line of thinking because it allows her to show the occasional leniency without entirely destroying her reputation. Behind the facade, Gree really isn’t anywhere near as concerned about incidental offenses as she lets on.

Gree’s a sensual person, and she enjoys things which spark the senses. Thunderstorms (so long as her ship’s not in danger), luxurious silk sheets, decadent food, the briny scent of sea air, passionate music, a skilled lover’s touch… she’s a glutton for all of it. She’s picky with her lovers, and notoriously fickle with them after she feels like she’s had all “the experience” they can offer. She’s typically content curling up somewhere comfortable with a good book and some of her pets most nights, and she’d rather do this indefinitely than bed someone she feels is beneath her just because she’s lonely. As particular as she is and as consistently as she tries to set herself apart from the crew, she nonetheless feels a deep and severe sense of territorialness over them. She would protect them (and her ship) with every ounce of her available Craft, every dirty trick in her book, every drop of venom in her Snaketooth. Her fearsome reputation, she believes, is as much for their benefit as it is her own.

That said, Gree is lonely more often than she will admit even to herself. She feels constantly driven to be better, to do more, but there really isn’t a line she can cross and feel like she’s done. She will forever be fighting against an enemy she’s made up, trying to prove herself worthy to someone who doesn’t even exist.

Likes:
  • Reptiles. Gree is fond of most animals, but snakes and lizards in particular are a fascination of hers. They are low-maintenance, graceful and elegant, yet also fearsome and occasionally deadly. She appreciates a beauty in them that she feels most people overlook out of fear.
  • Independence. Grian’s family didn’t want for much when she was young, but she never enjoyed a terribly affectionate relationship with her parents. She chomped at the bit since she was young, eager to get away and prove herself capable of making it on her own. Her mother tried to keep her close with threats of cutting off the family’s support of her, but that only made Gree angrier and more determined to succeed without their help. Decades later, the need to prove herself independently successful still drives her.
  • Being mysterious. Black Widows in general have a fearsome reputation, and that’s amplified some among Scelts. Never having actually lived in Scelt where her kind are persecuted, Gree has the luxury of thinking that fearsome reputation is beneficial. She keeps to herself, and though this is partially motivated by a simple fondness for privacy, she enjoys what it adds to her aura of mystery.

Dislikes:
  • Not being in first place. Whether it’s as a lover or a thief, Gree can’t stand being shown up. Her pride is a terrible thing, and she’d rather not enter a race at all if the odds say she’s not going to come out on top. She considers this just smart strategizing, but really it’s just her aversion to looking bad.
  • Bleeding hearts. More specifically, bleeding hearts that slow her down. Few aboard a pirate ship of their own volition would likely call themselves such, but Gree’s assignment of this title is preeeettty liberal. She doesn’t consider herself an evil person, but there’s alot she’ll do to succeed on a job that other people would flinch at. She’s convinced that the world is dog-eat-dog, and that limiting her own success just for the sake of others is a short path to ruin.
  • Being mostly short-lived. This eats at her constantly. This is, really, the core of her conflict with her parents. Had her father not given in to sentimentality, Gree feels like she could be who she is, except long-lived. She’ll still have several times over the lifespan of her mother and her Sceltic relatives, but only a fraction of what her father’s family will know. Sometimes, thinking about what she could accomplish in five thousand years if only she hadn’t been cheated is enough to pitch her temper.

Fears:
  • Losing her ship. Gree is young to be a merchant in Dhemlan outside of Scelt town, and young to be a ship owner anywhere in DK. She had to take on a partner and sink her life’s savings into building the Scimitar, but it’s every bit the ship she dreamed it would be. It’s fast and beautiful, and outfitted with cutting edge Craft and tech to keep her ahead of the competition for a long time coming. Yet at the end of the day, it’s just an arrangement of wood and metal. There are countless ways it could be destroyed or damaged beyond repair, and such a thing would devastate her more than just financially.
  • Running out of time. As driven as Gree is to succeed on her own, there’s never been a point at which she’s felt like she’s made it. The years tick by more quickly than she’d like, and though she’s made good use of them so far, she can’t help but compare herself to the long-lived around her. She fears she won’t have enough years in her life to get to a place where she’ll be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people around her.
  • Devil’s Teeth. Gree Carey doesn’t scare easily in the traditional sense, but she knows something creepy is going on around the remote islands off of Dhemlan’s northern shore. Her vision webs show her nothing about that place, and the weather behaves more strangely the nearer one gets to the outer islands. She’s not one to usually be scared off by the unknown, but the horror stories told about the fates of those who venture too near are enough to keep her and the Scimitar well away. Of course, she seldom admits this aloud, and claims to keep the ship away because the “ridiculous ghost stories” about the place keep any appreciable business opportunities away from there anyway.

Craft Strengths:
  • Weather Kenning. Grian has spent decades tailoring her vision webs towards predicting the weather along a proposed route. Over the years of studying these webs and comparing them to the ensuing weather, she has learned to read the natural patterns and indicators in the world around her. She can now give an incredibly educated (though ultimately mundane) guess at what the sky is likely to do in a given direction. The real strength of her Craft here is how quickly she can spin out a small vision web on the occasions when a more definitive forecast is necessary. Some Widows need peace and quiet in order to consult vision webs, but decades spent in high-stress environments has made Gree capable of checking her weather webs while the ship is being tossed about mid-squall.
  • Animal Handling. Though the feral nature of the Blood often inherently makes most animals uncomfortable, Grian has managed since a young age to project a bastardization of Social Craft which quietly counters this phenomenon. Too subtle an effect to make a difference with most Blood, this feat nonetheless subtly puts animals at ease in her presence, and allows her to handle many types of animals as pets without fear. She can’t communicate with them even mentally any more than she could a landen, but the manipulation of this Craft helps her express very basic wishes towards the animals: go, come, be quiet, etc.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Shadow Building. For no known reason, Grian is rubbish at this. The masterful control of moving, life-like shadows that most Black Widows learn is beyond Gree’s ability. She can create static illusions, the likes of which can be summoned with Whimsy Craft, but cannot imbue them with any semblance of life. Through determination and practice, Grian has finally begun to overcome her inexplicable deficiency at this specialization of Black Widow Craft. While she will likely never be a real ingenue in this department, her Shadows are now on par with peers of her Jewel strength and caste.
  • Social Craft. Grian got more attention than she wanted when abusing this Craft as a young Black Widow, and since then has never quite been able to conjure it without enough anxiety to make the results less than dependable. Seduction Craft is now entirely beyond her reach, and the more subtle areas of Social Craft have a high chance of backfiring horribly on the rare occasions she risks trying to use them.

Life Story
Family:
Mother: Ceana Carey, White - Yellow witch, b. 123 AP
Father: Kanen Sheane, White to Rose Warlord Prince, b. 99 AP

History:
Grian’s younger years were fairly picturesque. Her parents were deeply in love despite the difference in their races. Her father intentionally rushed (by long-lived standards) to have children to please his short-lived love, and for a while the little family was near-on blissful.  Kanen’s family was well-off, and lifted Ceana and her children out of the slums of Scelt Town. Grian benefitted from fine Dhemlanese schooling, although existing so close to the golden-skinned, golden-eyed gods that were the long-lived wound up infusing her with a deep-seated jealousy that she still carries to this day. This was only aggravated in her adolescent years, when she began to understand the differences between her parents, and what that meant for her own lifespan. She was a precocious, often surly child to begin with, and being “robbed” of a long-lived lifespan was enough of an offense for her to resent her mother for being short-lived, and her father for being weak enough to love her. When her snaketooth emerged when she was sixteen, it made sense to everyone, in hindsight.

She left home as soon as she was able and joined the Dhemlanese Navy. It was the fastest way she could see to make good money of her own while still perfecting her Black Widow training. The moment she had her Offering in hand she signed on, welcomed happily by an institution that was hungry for Black Widows to train. Grian took to the weather witch specialty like a fish to water, particularly when she realized her compensation increased with every level of training she completed. Money was a powerful motivator for the young witch, and she plied herself in earnest to advance as quickly as she could. After all, the more money she could squirrel away for herself, the lower the chance that she’d have to crawl back to her family once her tenure in the Navy was done.

A bright girl, it didn’t take long for Grian to get wind of the fact that even more wealth was available to those willing to do the unsavory. She attempted to have her cake and eat it too for a while, via secretly commissioning a small gang of mercenaries to accost high-yield shipments her position inside the Navy made her privy to. It worked for a little while, but a job gone wrong came uncomfortably close to having her outed as the mastermind behind it. Scared off by the potential consequences, Grian backed off and finished her term of service.

She left the Navy to pursue a private career as a weather witch, but soon discovered that the more dubious ships were the only ones who could afford her at the rates she was used to. Working below the law didn’t bother her, but Gree was particular enough about how to do things that working under the authority of another (whom she often saw as less competent) grated on her. Grian soon decided to commission her own ship and crew. She had a sizable little nest of funds stored, but not nearly enough to build the kind of ship she wanted. Unwilling to set sail in a sub-par rig and seeing few viable alternatives, she swallowed enough pride to partner with another enterprising mixed-blood pirate, a shipless captain named Benita Sanchez. Together they funded the building of the Scimitar, and they spent a solid fifteen years being what Gree likes to call the “smartest” pirates on the Dhemlanese coast. They’ve run a good mix of making coin while keeping their heads down… until Benita recently turned up dead.

Undeterred, Gree now has to find a way to move forward with her remaining crew and her beloved boat, just as soon as she can find a new captain….

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
“The most beautiful woman you’ve ever laid eyes on, isn’t she?” Gree whispered, sensing Benita’s approach at her side. The other woman joined her leaning on the rail, and though Gree didn’t look, she thought she could feel Benita’s bright smile beside her.

“Sexiest creature I’ve ever seen, no doubt about that,” Benita agreed, and the women fell into an appreciative silence together. Tall, sleek, dark, and graceful, the vision before them was everything Grian had dreamed up, and so much more. It was nearly finished. Already, it bore the telltale shape of a Dhemlanese galleon, broad and stout enough to carry crew, cargo, and defenses aplenty, while remaining lithe, slender, and well-masted enough to soar through the water at impressive speeds. They'd paid extra - dearly - to be able to lay webs into the hull itself, and there were more that would reinforce the cabins and defensive port holes. If Gree and Benita had anything say about it, she’d be one of the fastest ships currently on the water. Maybe the fastest, but Gree had burned her contacts at the naval shipyard some time ago, now, and couldn’t be sure.

“You thought of a name yet?” Benita prompted, after a moment. She turned her head to look at the Widow, and smirked at how utterly infatuated Grian looked while she studied the ship. “Gree?” she prompted, when the woman didn’t answer.

“The Scimitar,” Gree answered, a low smile turning her lips in response. Her eyes never left the shared investment before her. “She’ll be the sharpest thing Dhemlan’s ever seen.”
