* Plot Information for Dhemlan, Kaeleer

Dhemlan has become a land divided. The corruption that Witch’s Purge wiped out in the rest of the Realms was preserved by the well-meaning sacrifice of the territory’s Ebon Gray Queen. As such, the corruption here has only intensified. The tension between the Landen and the Blood who were meant to care for them is fast reaching a boiling point.

Appearance

Play By: Jon Kortajarena
Distinguishing Features: High, sharp cheekbones and a lopsided, rakish smile are generally the first things one notices about the Warlord in question. Additionally, varying scars and marks adorn his frame, trophies from his centuries of pirating and battles won (because if you lose it means you're dead, and he's very much still standing).

Personality

Personality:

If one were to compare dark-jeweled Blood to the lethal and tumultuous storms or hurricanes that Mother Nature is capable of, then Ekain Petite would best be described as the eye of those storms: still dangerous and virulent beneath the surface without a doubt, but able to project a more steadfast mastery of that innate ferocity thanks to his caste. Calm, hardworking and controlled, he is easily a picturesque example of a Warlord in many ways. The man tends to actually be the more thoughtful and level-headed one between himself and his captain and best friend, Rayen Sandoval. The voice of reason for her impulsive nature and the steadfast pillar of support that her and the rest of the Valiant's crew cling to in times of dire straits.

Those who don't know him closely are foolish enough to take the generally easygoing demeanor of the Warlord at purely face value. They find themselves deceived into forgetting the depth of his strength and potential for violence while he offers them a charming smile and a string of good-natured jokes, even a few rounds of drinks and a tumble in the sheets if you happen to catch his eye that way... But that is where many have erred in their impressions of him and find themselves later overwhelmed by the full force of what a Gray-jeweled male is capable of.

Because even the seemingly calm eye of the storm is still part of the storm itself. Only a minor, brief reprieve before the full force of nature is once again upon those who dare to cross and brave it.

Despite the leverage to his personality that his caste affords him, that natural predilection can only go so far before the true state of what lies beneath the surface reveals itself. Living the pirate lifestyle that he does, the constant adrenaline from ship skirmishes and general seafaring tend to appease the more primal nature of a dark-jeweled Blood. The violence and bloodshed from battles slake these innately feral urges, and it's put on display readily with both how strategized and ruthless he is when he enters the killing field or when pushed beyond the breaking point of his usual patience. Questioning his loyalty is a large trigger for this and he has killed an unlucky several over the years for insisting that he's untrue to his ship and his fellow crew members, as well as anyone who attempts to threaten or bring harm to those he views as his.

In another life, one perhaps where the man's sense of morality were more strict and upstanding (as opposed to being as gray as his Offering jewel), Ekain would've been among the best of the best officers in Dhemlan's navy. While not notably intelligent in the realm of book smarts - even as a boy his lessons in those things bored him and he was a barely passable student at best - he's a brilliant tactician and strategist, able to evaluate a battle with a rival crew or some other endeavor and plan several steps ahead like it were a casual game of chess instead of a potential bloodbath. He rarely panics and always chooses to exude fearlessness, even in some of the most dicey situations. If it does arise he takes great care in making sure he does not convey it outwardly. The man knows the strengths and weaknesses of those he works and sails with, making sure that they are all played to accordingly and refusing to allow anyone the upper-hand on his captain.

Dutifully loyal and painfully obstinate, he takes these traits to fault-like extremes time and time again. In various instances he's suffered an injury in battle and tried to hide it or dismiss it as less serious than it might have actually been for the sake of allowing others to be looked at and healed first, usually only conceding when Raye finally notices and loses her temper about it. 'Stupid, stubborn male!' is not a phrase he's unfamiliar with at this point.

His loyalty and dedication to those that are most important to him is practically legendary, as evidenced by the easy deference he affords Rayen (when she's not, you know, incarcerated) and the insistence that she reclaim her position at the helm of the Valiant each and every time she returns. It baffles many how someone wearing the Gray and possessing his talents can be content in his position and not go out to seek his own captaincy and fortune aboard a vessel of his own, but to him it's second-nature and he can't see himself anywhere else. Not to say folks haven't tried, countless people over the years have attempted to woo the First Mate away from his ship and his friends but ultimately to no avail.

Likes:
  • Physicality: The Warlord has always been a physical and tactile creature, even as a boy before his deep birthright was bestowed upon him. A seemingly endless fountain of energy buzzes within him and the jewels he wears only increase that by incredible proportions; thus, he's always been someone who needs an outlet (or several) to burn off the excess. Sparring, sword fights, manual labor aboard the Valiant (he's known particularly for voluntarily assisting the boatswain with maintenance and repairs despite many thinking it beneath his station), sex... Literally any activity that allows him to be in motion and diffusing his inherent, extra energy in some way will tend to suffice for him, really.
  • Black Widows: While most find them intimidating or frightening, Ekain usually takes the opposite route, delighting in their typically prickly natures and sharp tongues. He doesn't underestimate them, of course, because that would be just foolish, but he does tend to be more cavalier and at ease in their presence than a lot of folks are. Is this merely coincidental alongside his history of having a fondness for cavorting with Weather Witches? Probably, but it definitely doesn't hurt things in that aspect.
  • Good food: Perhaps one of the few reprieves he appreciates about being docked and wandering the mainland is the food. The Valiant's cook is talented as any and does the best with their resources, but ship food is still ship food regardless of how infamous a pirate you are or how long you've been doing the gig. Ekain is and always will be a sucker for an excellent, home-cooked meal whether its from his favorite tavern or an impromptu visit back to his parents. While he does favor the spices and flavors of his homeland, he's generally open to trying anything new and interesting from other, neighboring Territories as well.

Dislikes:
  • Being questioned: First Mate Petite is not rash in his process of making decisions. Most of what he does is usually thought through to its end, so when his directives or motives are challenged, it rankles the usually unflappable Warlord. This isn't so much an authority thing as it is a principle and trust thing. He exhibits a generous amount of good faith towards those he interacts and sails with, so is it really too much to expect the same in return? He doesn't think so.
  • Mainland: What the regular folks would consider "sea legs" is Ekain's normal way of carrying himself, appearing more comfortable and natural on deck both physically and mentally. He's indubitably more at home on the Valiant adrift Kaeleer's high seas than he ever is when visiting the mainland of Dhemlan or even docking at one of the many ports of call. Short stints are fine as they are necessary for supplies (and women) and the like, but keep him landlocked for too long and he gets restless and tense.
  • Rats: The animal, not the snitch kind (although he has a firm disapproval of that kind too, and has issued punishment aplenty to betrayers and cowards both). They're filthy, disease-ridden, destructive in the manner of which they'll eat through ship supplies and food stores, and serve no productive purpose being the rodents that they are. Generally just bad news to be found upon any ship and Ekain can't honestly remember the last time he's seen one on the Valiant, so meticulous he'll make sure that someone triple-checks every crevice and corner as frequently as possible.

Fears:
  • Losing Rayen and Anela: The crew of the Valiant is an extension of his family and he'll protect them fiercely until his last breath, there's no question of that. However, the connection with the Sandoval sisters specifically extends even beyond that camaraderie for Ekain. He grew up with Raye and spent decades - if not a couple centuries - getting to know Anela during her sister's last stint in prison. They're his absolute best friends and undoubtedly the siblings that he never had, being an only child like he is. The Warlord has killed for them and would most assuredly die for them without hesitation.
  • Death via sharks: Have you ever seen a shark attack in person? He has. Have you ever condemned someone to death via an instigated shark attack after walking the plank? He has. It is neither a pretty sight nor a quick, painless end. Of all the possible ways to die in the world, that is definitely one he's most averse to.
  • Bad omens: There are an array of superstitions that seafarers of all kinds tend to heed very seriously, and Ekain is no stranger to them. In fact, he believes in most of them very staunchly and is absolutely superstitious when it comes to warding off and avoiding bad luck out on the ocean. The saying 'red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning,' no whistling while on board, the refusal to kill albatrosses (as they're considered good omens), and several other similar notions are all things the Warlord abides by almost religiously. The idea of being brought down unexpectedly due to a stroke of bad luck because he didn't pay proper caution is not something he cares to have weighing on his shoulders.

Craft Strengths:
  • Communication Craft: To be frank, Rayen's psychic communication skills are known to be garbage almost entirely unusable, so when that came to light Ekain was quick to make up for his captain's deficiency in that arena. Boasting the jewels that he does, his psychic threads are able to span almost the entire jewel spectrum with both crystal sharp clarity and resounding volume regardless of whatever else may be transpiring around him and who he's broadcasting to. He can hold an astounding number of separate threads at one time, distance is rarely an obstacle for him and he's even able to even zero in and block out outside interference or people trying to pry into a conversation he's initiating if need be.
  • Defensive Shielding: Ekain's shields are the stuff of legend and the envy in many of his contemporaries. They're superior in strength, duration (able to rival those of someone even deeper than himself in the Abyss), and centuries of practice have allowed him to expend less energy making them. Over the centuries, he's worked tirelessly to even expand them to encompass the whole structure of the Valiant and its crew, allowing the ship and company to weather intense storms and brutal assaults/dogfights that other, lesser ships would find themselves hindered or even destroyed by.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Psychic Cleansing & Masking: Pirates are generally not stealthy or subtle, it's antithetical by the nature of most of them. They want people to know where they've been and what they've done, they crave the acknowledgment of their enemies, their prey and those who would later tell the stories of their exploits. It's this inherent facet of the First Mate that has kept Ekain from mastering this Craft. You'll know without a doubt when he's in the room or if he's been at the recent scene of some privateer hijinks. On the rare occasions concealment is necessary, he has to rely on other methods or people to help him with this.
  • Compulsion Craft: The way he carries himself and behaves, his reputation and even the depth of his jewels are all contributing factors to the respect that he commands from those around him. Ekain's never needed to resort to compulsion spells to get what he needs or get his subordinates to do their jobs. If the booming timbre of his voice or the sharp, deadpan glare isn't compelling enough for someone to listen to him when he expects it, then they'll either promptly learn that lesson anew or be removed. Furthermore, he just lacks the subtlety to pull these spells off right and they always tend to hit someone like a cannonball in the face, alerting them immediately to its usage - obviously not ideal.

History:

The Petite family has never been particularly extraordinary in their origins, but that was always just fine for them. Generations of blue collar workers hailing from a moderately-sized village near one of Dhemlan's ports of call, the tradition continued readily with Diego and his wife, Ximena. The Warlord had been a dock worker for centuries, like his father before him and his grandfather before that. The Hearth Witch he married early in life had inherited her family's tavern near one of the piers, a favorite of many Naval officers as well as merchant sailors who passed through.

They'd never really yearned for a large family of their own, but they did desire one regardless, so Ekain's birth was both the start and end of their desires in that realm. A healthy and energetic little Warlord for them to raise and support, one who'd probably walk away with a moderate set of jewels similar to their own and continue either of the family businesses when he became of age to do so. If he was really ambitious, maybe he'd follow in his older cousin's footsteps and enlist in the Dhemlan Naval Academy in Tarragona.

His childhood was quite standard as far as Blood children tend to go and he was a sociable, friendly tot, easily gathering all kinds of companions amidst the village - though one in particular seemed to stick closer than the rest. The daughter of their neighbors, the Sandovals: Rayen. She was a few years younger than Ekain, but she was spirited and imaginative and he took a shine to her immediately, the pair of them becoming fast friends as he would always pick her first for his crew whenever all the village kids got together and played pirates.

It was a simple sort of living and one that saw very little disruption for the most part. This simplicity did see some turbulence for a short time right after Ekain's Birthright Ceremony. His parents and the family friends in attendance had figured he'd emerge with a middling jewel at most, so the sheer surprise that erupted when the little Warlord who loved swimming and boats and playing pirates emerged with a jagged, uncut Sapphire held between his hands was an impressive thing to behold.

Ultimately, the boy's jewel changed very little of his daily routine aside from the amount of food his mother cooked for meals and the sheer force of will and amount of energy he possessed. His sires weren't ambitious enough to try and better their status or lot in life by shipping him off to a court as leverage (and he insisted he didn't want to go anyway, so they were hardly going to force him), and any plans for further, secondary education at Salamanca were hardly in his future as he showed no interest (or raw intellect, honestly) for academia and things of a bookish nature.

The Dhemlanese Navy was still a possibility, but one that vanished instantly when he was suddenly swept into the whirlwind that was Rayen Sandoval's mission to save her father. The man and his brother, Ghent, had apparently been pirates (Ekain found that incredible and fantastic!), which was all well and good until the full force of the Navy had swept down upon them - capturing Bautista for his crimes while Ghent managed to escape. He had caught Raye sprinting towards the docks, clearly intent to give chase of some kind, but he managed to stop her with a shield of Sapphire and words of wisdom, stern caution to not rush recklessly into the endeavor and instead pursue it when she (which turned into they) was bigger, stronger, older.

Surprisingly, she acquiesced and fell back, though not without turning her solo mission into a duo mission, practically demanding Ekain's help in said training and chasing after her missing father's captors. So train they did. And trained. And trained. And, yes, trained some more. Legitimate sword-fighting and combat, knot-tying, rope-climbing, swimming... anything the young man could teach his feisty best friend and furthermore anything they could learn from the sailors who roamed the docks near their home. This went on tirelessly up until the pair of them made their Offerings, the Warlord once more stunning everybody (himself included) by emerging a full day later with the Gray, and had opted to leave their home village. Ekain had practically sworn himself to his best friend at this point and was intent on seeing his promise from years ago through to its end, if not beyond.

He followed her first unto a merchant ship, then further still onto the pirate vessel some-odd years later after it had overrun said merchant ship. The latter, in an unusual spin of coincidence, turned out to be captained by none other than Rayen's uncle, Ghent. They were reluctantly granted positions among the crew of the Valiant and as it turned out, things weren't quite as whimsical and fancy-free as their childhood games of pirates painted the privateer life to be, but that was no deterrent for either of them. Ekain was a hard worker and a quick learner aboard the ship, rising through the ranks at a steady pace.

After years aboard the Valiant, his best friend finally got her wish when Ghent conceded and the crew took active participation in the jailbreak and returning of Bautista Sandoval, an impressive feat and one only shadowed by the lofty promotions that both witch and Warlord received about half a century later. Ghent desired retirement and deigned to bestow captaincy of the Valiant to his niece, which led to Ekain being immediately named second-in-command... he did rather like the ring First Mate Petite had to it, he found. He could've parted ways and commandeered his own legacy as a captain on a different ship, but he'd grown to befriend the crew and he was far too stubborn to leave Rayen's side, so integral a pair they'd become with how well they operated in tandem.

The next few centuries passed without incident beyond that of the typical, pirating variety. Rayen found herself incarcerated a couple times, which left faithful Ekain as the interim captain until she managed to escape and return to her ship, there were skirmishes with the Navy and a particular, Ebon Gray-jeweled Warlord Prince who proved to be their most notable rival on a couple of occasions. It wasn't until a third showdown with the captain of the Skyjammer that things got particularly sketchy. A kidnapped Queen was no small crime and Rayen found herself thrown into Dhemlan's most notable maximum security prison after she was lured in by Tiberius, where she'd remain for an additional three-hundred years, making that Ekain's longest stint as captain yet.

Several attempts to break his best friend out were made in that span of time, but many of the remaining crew slowly found their notorious reputations preceding them and they, too, wound up imprisoned, which left the Valiant dangerously low on people to continually make such risks until Ekain was able to break them out (which he did, in time and with care). His own notoriety grew in his time as stand-in captain of the Valiant and it was his lengthy streak of managing to remain out of prison that became something of legend among the pirate community (attributed to his ability to plan and strategize and know when to get the hell out before the Navy arrived).

It was this same calm, intuitive manner in which Captain Petite operated that allowed him and many of the Valiant's crew to survive and keep their jewels intact after the Purge when it struck. They were at sea on a mission when the witchstorm hit, but he called for a retreat when he saw (and felt, for the intensity of the chaos pressed dangerously against his inner barriers given how low in the Abyss he sat) what was happening: the rival ship and its crew were being destroyed in moments when they shielded. Ekain was quick and sterner than ever as he commanded everyone to get below deck, not conjure additional shields and drop ones that had already been summoned. They thought he'd actually lost his mind and several argued, but his threats of throwing them promptly overboard if they didn't do as he said were enough to change their minds, even if they thought him mad.

Surprisingly and by what was surely one of the biggest gambles of his career (as he always did enjoy calculating the odds)? It worked. The Purge passed over the ship and the crew on board with fewer casualties than it might've claimed had he not ordered them to fall back. There were a couple deaths and a handful of broken jewels of those who had been slower to react or caught up in it too quickly, but far less than that of other ships and their crews. He was lauded for years after the event and it is to this day one of his more prominent claims to fame during his tenure as captain for the vessel.

With the crew and ship intact once more after the Purge, business resumed as usual and yet another effort to jailbreak Rayen was instated, though one could only imagine his surprise when they discovered she'd already been freed, and by a highly unlikely source, no less. Rumors led to the Skyjammer, but even following them proved fruitless as he was informed that while she had been there, she'd left a few years after serving on the flying ship. Instinct took over and Ekain was almost certain he knew where to find his oldest friend after that: home.

And home she was, surprisingly with a new sister as well. The reunion was centuries overdue and there was incredibly raucous celebration, though it was followed briefly by equally raucous argument as to who would captain the Valiant now. Rayen insisted that he'd earned it over the years and should keep his place at the helm, but Ekain was defiant on the matter and vehemently refused. Neither side was intent on backing down, but eventually the Warlord won and Captain Sandoval was reinstated after a whopping 300+ years of absence.

With the tried and true retinue back in place at last after the reunion (and a new addition in the form of the equally-fiery, younger Sandoval sister), the Valiant has maintained its infamous legacy upon the high seas of Kaeleer ever since.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:

There was always something so relaxing about the lull of the sea beneath a ship. The subtle up-and-down bobbing that was mostly undisturbed when the ocean was calm was nearly enough to put a less-attentive man to sleep - especially at night when the sky was clear and both the moon and the stars were out in full force. It was a sight Ekain always welcomed, even in times of duress it was just soothing enough to take his mind away from anything that was troubling him.

Which... in this instance was perhaps a good thing given he had absolutely no idea how they were going to handle their newest crisis and it was slowly driving him mad. As much as he itched to pace across the main deck, he'd done too much of that already and had been effectively shooed elsewhere by at least three people. The situation was as baffling as it was infuriating and the First Mate just couldn't decide how to tackle it. So instead he had climbed up the main mast and taken a lazy seat within the crow's nest, lounging there well into the night for what had probably been several hours at this point while the Valiant made its slow course back to one of Dhemlan's ports.

A normal person would've probably been sleeping, but how could he, especially right now? The Warlord had told himself he'd try to wait until morning to deal with it, he'd insisted to himself that it could wait... but clearly that had been a huge lie and he had absolutely no intent of actually doing that. He had at first, to be fair, but the niggling wouldn't cease and the matter was obviously not going to leave him alone that long.

Heaving what could only be described as a half-sigh, half-growl sort of sound, the Gray-jeweled man heaved himself off from the edge of the crow's nest and literally jumped out of it, landing with little more than a muted thud of his boots meeting the surface of the deck thanks to a touch of Craft slowing his descent. Raking his fingers through his already tousled hair, Ekain strode down below deck and to the captain's quarters, only bothering with a single knock and a tendril of Gray to signify his presence - he doubted Raye was sleeping right now either, so he wasn't concerned - before he pushed the door open and leaned against the wall after walking fully into the cabin, arms folded across his chest.

"We need to figure out what we're doin' - or not doin' - about Aira. Really don't think it can wait."

The pips and things need to be sorted out on this gent from the looks of things, but otherwise I'll be adopting him per this.

As his jewels were never officially rolled I'd like to request a general random roll, please and thank you!
