* Plot Information for Dhemlan Terreille

It is natural for a Long-Lived Territory to remember the past, but it is equally essential to for them step into the future, and Dhemlan’s future is Democracy. With a proud tradition of representative government already in place, post-war Dhemlan has chosen to let the people decide their path forward. With drought and starvation looming, no one knows who the next ruler will be, but they do know this: the fate of Dhemlan Terreille will be decided not on the battlefield, but at the polls.

Distinguishing Features:
Kesare is never without the golden leaf necklace gifted to her by her Queen daughter Violetta. She wears it bathing, making love, Healing. When triggered, it gives off an Opalescent light perfect for reading. ("So you can study, mummy, because it makes you tired to make your own.") The necklace has a shard of her daughter's birthright Opal gem embedded in it. The Opal Shard endures because it merely holds the well Crafted set spell, as opposed to powering it. Kesare's personal energy is used when triggered.

Personality

Personality:
Kesare is both proud, and insecure.
She is compassionate, and ruthless.
Widow and Healer.
She is both driven, and utterly lost.
These dualities run through her entire life, driving her on towards personal perfection and the redemption of her people.
She acts with the heated, reckless passion of a forest fire when she is angry.

Kesare's innate insecurity is rooted in her family's disdain for her Birthright Jewel. This basic insecurity has been the spark for her intense drive and furious study, but no matter how much she learns or how much recognition she receives, it is never enough. She cares deeply about the opinions of those around her. She would much rather take a physical blow than have cruel or hurtful things said about or to her.

Kesare is proud of her work and her lineage, although this pride does not carry with it an automatic contempt for those with out her advantages. She is working hard on eliminating her Class consciousness, but it is a daily battle. Almost as hard as learning to accept each Eyrien as a person, rather than an extension of the Askavi War Machine.

She will never forgive or accept people who are unwilling to work for what they want. She is endlessly patient and compassionate with those who have tried. Doing your best and failing is simply a part of learning.

Kesare has a serious mind with a grave purpose that can blot out levity. It is not that she dislikes laughter, but rather that her heart no longer holds onto joy. In any situation or relationship, she perceives the risks and wounds first, the rewards last. This caution in personal relationships has her eschewing skin-to-skin contact, save when healing or seducing someone. To accomplish this without being rude, she wears gloves.

Without a sturdy Escort to make her tend to her own needs, she will burn out the strength of her body, ruthlessly powering her Craft until nothing is left.

She had sought the Unkowable before the Purge; turned away in grief and rage. Unexpectedly, in reaching out to Heal the spirit and mind of a damaged Half-Eyrien, she found the seeds to her own redemption. The Call to serve, to be a Priestess of Mother Night and make her Healing skills complete could not be denied. In working through her own hate, she has found an enduring peace and love that cannot be taken away, even by death. At last, the splintered portions of her soul can be woven into a tri-cord band. Imperfect, flawed, yet unutterably beautiful.

Yet even such joy as she has found is not without its Cost.

She saw the Purge and its destruction as a betrayal, and blamed not Witch (who is Mother Night's avatar, and thus beyond reproach), but the Priestesses whom she felt should have warned the Blood. After the Purge, Kesare ended her formal Priestess training and walked away from her place at Court. She did not associate with a single Priestess since that day, not even her friends. She searched, and searched to fill that void.

Now she must not only fight her class consciousness and her fear of Eyriens, but her reflexive hatred of Priestesses.

Likes:
  • 1 Fire. Kesare loves open flames, from camp fires to candles. She has even mastered the Craft as well as physical skills of both Fire-dancing and Fire-walking. She is not a pyromaniac, doesn't need to see anything burn down. It is more about feeling the heat and power of the flames on her skin, seeing its Webs in her mind. A private and dangerous way for her to commune with the Darkness. When there is an open flame, she will be near it, playing with it. (Note: Since I am going to write this as requiring preparation and meditation to do correctly, I do not see this as a combat skill. Maybe if she were a dark jeweled Warlord-Prince, since they manage great focus and great Craft while in combat, but not Kesare; you interrupt her in the middle if a Fire-dance and she's going to get singed.)
  • 2 The Darkness. It is only since the Purge that Kesare has lived without a Queen as the focal point of her life, and she has been wildly lost without that caring concern and sense of higher purpose. She has struggled and wrestled with the undeniable fact that to rely upon another person for comfort is foolish. Fate itself can take them away at any point. But the Darkness is present, always. While it is too much to say she has found peace there, the turbulent, wild truth of the Blood rejuvenates and Heals her, in many ways taking the place of a Queen in her life.
  • 3 Dhemlan. She loves her home. Loves the smells, sights and culture of her ancient home. She has learned a great deal of compassion for the people of her homeland, admiring their fierce nature and stubborn determination to pick up the pieces and go on, over and over again. Her travel to other Territories only highlights for her how much she loves Dhemlan.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Priestesses. She sees the Purge and its destruction as a betrayal, and blames not Witch (who is Mother Night's avatar, and thus beyond reproach), but the Priestesses who should have warned the Blood. After the Purge, Kesare ended her formal Priestess training and walked away from her place at Court. She has not seen or spoken to her mentor, the Lady Confessor, since that day. She returns home about twice a year to take care of paperwork, write to Savion Eusaka, and drop off the latest farming tips from the Landen she has been healing. She brings in top soil, seeds, and fertilizers, but without a village, district or even province Queen, it is not enough. Her family have dwelt upon the same lands since before recorded history, before the founding of Dehmlan. She is the last guardian of Fuentes Castillo, but the land itself is dying. Perhaps they will return to the Darkness together.
  • 2 Punishing the Landen for Blood sins. It was an accepted way of life, the natural order of things for most of her life: the Blood acted, the Landen paid. But then the Purge happened, and the Blood either fled or died. On her huge ancestral estate (vast, now because all of the collateral lines came to her as well as a few pieces within her domain for which there was no heir left alive, so that even estates she was not entitled to by blood came to her) it was the Landen mayors, the Landen inn keepers and the Landen mill owners who remained. She has developed a fondness for them, along with a deep respect for their stubborn perseverance.
  • 3 Warlord-Prince ruling a territory. It is not that Warlord-Princes aren't capable of command, they are. It isn't that she dislikes The Conquistadors; quite the opposite, she is indebted to these half-wild Warlord-Princes, but violence begets violence, not life. The land dies, and what few Queens Dhemlan have seem reluctant to serve under a Warlord-Prince, instead of ruling him.

    Fears:
  • 1 Children. This is a complicated issue for her. She has gifted the world with many children over her millennia of life; a dozen grandchildren, even one precious great-grandchild, a darling little Warlord-Prince. Not one survived. She greatly fears the loss of another child, and has absolutely no intention of having more. And yet, her people need an heir. Her poor, desperate dying lands require a Queen to be born to them. She sees it in her webs, hears it in her prayers, feels it in the flames. She is almost as terrified of not having another child as she is of having one.
  • 2 War. Kesare fought in the Great War. She endured the 600 years of the Occupation. Then threw herself headlong into the revolution in Hayll. She knows, only too well, bitter cost of such warfare. But now Askavi grows powerful enough to refuse reparations, Hayll is in chaos, Pruul under an untested regime and her own land has very, very few of the Dark Jewels that could defend her. She is terrified for her nation, weak when so many are strong. And she fears that the Dhemlan she knew is doomed to burn, so that something new can grow in its place. The Darkness is much like a physician, willing to cut off clean flesh with the diseased to save the whole.
  • 3 Being collared.. She has lost fights before. She was captured by Askavi Raiders during the first War, captured by bandits just inside the Pruulian border during the false peace between wars, even briefly held by slavers once while in Raej. She has dealt with it, as she will no doubt have to deal with being captured in the future. That is the price of being valuable, but not scary. What terrifies her is not being captured, but being collared, where no amount of skill or cleverness can free her. She is used to being both smarter and better trained than her captors. A collar such as was fastened to the Queen of Little Terrielle's neck would negate those advantages. And from what she has seen, most of the Blood would just watch. There would be no outcry, no disdain from observers, just as there would be no rescue. She has no male of her family to escort her, no good friend or lover to come looking for her. And so, despite her avoidance of Glacia, this fear grows and grows. The fact that Glacia is clearly expanding it's influence only adds to her terror.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Jewels. Kesare loves the Jewels of her people. She has kept the broken, faded remnants from her lost family. Some of the Craft imbued shards, inherited over millennia or gifted personally from family members, retained their power after her loved ones' deaths. She has not found rhyme or reason as to why some shards remained, and others faded, but it fascinates her. She studies these uniquely personal gifts with all of the keen, trained mind of a scholar, utilizing her Widow's webs for her intense scrutiny. Since once the power is drained from these shards they are gone, she will use them only rarely, only when a great many lives are at risk. Being fascinated by these keepsakes, she is always on the lookout for more, either as payment for services rendered, or by purchase. While normally avoiding the more violent and outwardly criminal element, the promise of a new Jewel Shard will lure her into unwise situations and bad company.
  • 2 The Healing Rapport. A healing Rapport is when she leads a more powerful but less well-trained person through the Healing process. Because she is also a Black Widow, the darker Jeweled Blood does not have to be a Healer; they just have to have the self-control to endure an intimate mental touch with a virtual stranger and the will power to not take over the Weave. The three Blood (herself, the injured, the darker jewel) must open all but the inmost layer of shields to each other. This gentle yet terrifyingly vulnerable Full Rapport is then guided by Kesare, who is often the weakest of the three. Both the darker Jeweled and the injured must trust her to guide the weave of the healing; if they flinch, go too fast, or pour too much power into the Healing, they can kill her, break her gems, or damage her Chalice. The sense of harmony and balance, of spiritual as well as physical wholeness left in the wake of a successful Healing Rapport is what she craves, leading her to agree to this healing method more and more often, even with the risk to herself.
  • 3 Blood Magic. Kesare found the key to her spirituality and ability to reach the Darkness through her passions, not her reason. She found strength in surrender, not mastery. Almost every aspect of all three of her Castes are united when using Blood Magic. For Kesare, she has found an ability to use Blood Magic to help clarify Visions and Tangled Webs, bringing the past or possible futures into greater clarity than otherwise possible, especially when she is seeking the key to a patient's wounds or psyche.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Light. This was the first bit of Craft she was taught after she received her Birthright White, and to this day it is what she is worst at. When she weaves this, the light produced is either blindingly brilliant, as a spotlight in the eyes, or the entire area lightens to daytime brilliance. Both swiftly drain her White Jewel, risking breaking it. She cannot bear to weave light with her Rose, the fear of draining the stone is too intense for her to try. For more than 1,000 years she has tried to master this spell, studying versions from every territory and tradition. (Unknown to her, there is a flaw in the Jewel itself, magnifying and reflecting Light much like a diamond. This resulted from an early mistake made by her much more powerful and highly resentful tutor. Most light based spells are a little off if she uses her White to power them, but generally she uses the White only for diagnosis and weather shields. (I would imagine she would have difficulty shielding the White, but I doubt she has ever tried. Who would attack a White Birthright Jewel? I couldn't bear to take it as her second weakness, it's too rare an occurrence.)
  • 2 Stealth/aura masking. No matter who tries to Shield or hide Kesare's psychic scent/Aura, it never quite works. The distinctive, alluring scent of her White always leaks through. In one sense, it could be an advantage: you can use her to lure the enemy away. Occasionally a foe will take an extra second or two analyzing her unusual Psychic Signature. Sometimes this results in her winning instead of loosing, more often this delay results in her being captured instead of slain outright.
  • 3 Communion Kesare has been wounded, by the harsh truths of her life. She is typically very guarded, revealing only parts of herself to each person in turn. Yet to successfully achieve communion, whether on her own, being led, or leading another, she must open fully to allow the Darkness to flow through her and refill her reservoir of strength. This leaves her vulnerable not only to whomever she is with, but outsiders coming upon her. When she Communes, or Connects to the Darkness, she becomes unaware of the physical world. She has not yet found a balance point that allows for a duality of perception of both worlds.

    Life Story

    Family:
It is key to note that despite their absence on this character sheet, Kesare had 10 generations of Fuentes living in her home until Witch's Purge. Her mother lived through the Civil War 6,000 years ago; her grandmother fought in it, her grandfather died for it. This is not ancient history to her, it is real and immediate. Like Vietnam, or the Gulf war. The Purge was more harmful, more tragic to the long-lived, than the Occupation. She would have had a vast family, numbering in the high hundreds in Castle Fuentes alone, with cadet branches and Fuentes-led Courts all over Dhemlan.

Kesare was the youngest of her many siblings, the daughter of her mother's old age (a fact often blamed for her White Jewel). She had many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mother: Village Queen Maura Fuentes de Costa Cirea, Summer Sky to Purple Dusk, Died in Purge. Spent most of her life as the local Queen to her own family holdings. Had no interest in Territory politics. Approved of and enjoyed the company of Warlord-Prince Savion Euskara.
Father: Prince Fabian Ojeda, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky, Died in first Askavi invasion.
Siblings: Kesare had ten siblings, of which she had the weakest Birthright Jewel. If someone wants to play a sibling or niece/nephew later, we can think up a story to explain it. Of note to her history is the story of her oldest brother, who was made crazy by a blow to the head during the First Askavi War. He was the impetus for her further training.
  • Brother, Warlord Rafael Fuentes, Yellow to Tiger Eye. Died in the Purge.

First Husband: Warlord Sebastian Elpidio, Rose to Summer Sky, died in second Askavi invasion.
Their children: These children were close in age. Kesare's duty to her lineage requires that each daughter have children until they bear two daughters.
  • Son, Warlord Fuentes y Elpidio de Costa Ciraea, Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk, died in second Askavi invasion.
[****] Grandson Jamal Fuentes y Elpidio de Costa Ciraea, Warlord-Prince, Purple Dusk to Sapphire, died in Purge.
  • Son, Prince Ciriaco Fuentes y Elpidio de Costa Ciraea, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky, died in second Askavi War.
  • Son, Prince Adolfo Fuentes y Elpidio de Costa Ciraea, Purple Dusk to Opal, died in senseless dual over a woman a Warlord-Prince was Courting.
  • Daughter, Healer Araya Feuentes y Elpidio de Costa Cirea, Purple Dusk to Opal, died trying to heal her twin brother.
  • Daughter, Priestess Benita Fuentes y Elpidio de Costa Cirea, Yellow to Rose, died in second Askavi War.

    Lover
  • Daughter Anastasia Fuentes de Costa Cirea, 800 in 192 AP, b. 609 BP, Opal to Sapphire Queen, taken by the Askavi War Machine. (chosen jewels).

Second Husband: Prince Dimas Arujo, Opal to Green, died in Purge.
Their children: these children died young, at the Territory Court.
  • Son, Prince Martinez Fuentes y Arujo, Birthright Tiger Eye, died in Purge.
  • Daughter, Queen Violetta Fuentes y Arujo De Costa Cirea, Birthright Opal, born -19 before Purge. Had not yet had her offering at the time of the purge.
  • Son, Prince Aljandro Fuentes y Arujo de Costa Cirea, Birthright Rose, died in Purge.

    History:

    Spoiler:  Timeline (click to show/hide)

Kesare was born as the youngest child to a large and powerful aristo family in Dhemlan. She spent her early childhood on their ancestral estates, either up at Fuentes Castillo, or down on the rugged coast. Kesare's estate is in the Sarque province of Dhemlan, the Ciraea district, specifically including the mountains along the south shore. Her mother was the local village Queen, never desiring to serve anywhere but there. Kesare was a member of her mother's  Court for most of her life.

Kesare is long-lived, yet her guarded heart is not from the trials of a long life, but dates back to her childhood and the shame of her White Birthright. Even being a Healer born could not make amends to her proud family. As such, she is actually insecure, caring a great deal about what those around her think.

A keen intellect, years of furious, desperate study, and the Blessings of Mother Night resulted in a full Descent to the Rose during her Offering at 20. This sparked in her a belief that enough hard work and serious study could accomplish anything.

Kesare had received her initial Healer training at home, before her Birthright Ceremony. She  had a place reserved for her at the Dhemlan Academy the moment her Healing Caste manifested. That the Askavi attacked during her Birthright Ceremony changed nothing. She was sent to the Dhemlan Academy one month after her Birthright Ceremony as planned. Her years at the Academy were marked by intense training and students being rushed into the war before they were ready, punctuated by the death of her father and brothers. Being a mere White, she was permitted the full ten years of study. Due to the war, she was immediately deployed to the front lines. She was captured with a wounded train within a few years, and rescued by her brother Rafael who took her to Judiah in Hyall for specialized healing. Rafael was already badly wounded and not right in the head. Her escape would not have been possible without the subtle aid of Kashar, and she knows this.

After the Askavi were driven off she returned to her mother's Court and served there for decades, striving to Heal her brother Rafael. She consulted with higher and higher Courts until she met a tri Casted Mentor, who encouraged her study of specialized Healer training (the four winds, that criss-cross a person's body and permit both a balanced personality and movement without pain. Nerves and the endocrine system, as well as those injuries that blur the line between purely organic damage and mental trauma. Her Mentor also encouraged her to train as a Black Widow, training in healing Chalices and balancing personalities. Power and skill are not always enough to heal a broken Chalice, sometimes a bond of love and trust between the victim and the Widow is required.

Kesare returned to the Academy to teach Healing while learning her new Caste. This study did not come easily to her, taking a very long time, even by the standards of her long-lived race. Once she completed her dual Caste training, her relationship with her family underwent a radical transformation. She was no longer an embarrassment, but an adornment to her mother's crown and Court. Kesare exercised great restraint in not rushing home to Heal her brother. She studied his injuries with her new tools and perfected her Craft first. There were twenty well-spent years between becoming a Healer / Black-Widow and beginning the Healing of Rafael.

Kesare then brought her Mentor home with her, and together they Healed her mad brother. Rafael had not been himself for 80 years! Once more Kesare had achieved the near impossible through hard work, rather than as a gift of birth. This achievement changed her. It subtly undermined the pervasive belief amongst the Blood in general, and the Dhemlan Aristos in particular, that you are defined by what you are born.

For two hundred years, Kesare split her time between assisting her Mentor, teaching at the Academy as requested, and her mother's Court. She married well, and gave birth to several children. Some of those children gave her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her twins died untimely young, a result of Blood passion and failure to adhere to Protocol. A Warlord-Prince grandson, Jamal, was born. He was the darling of the Court, and treasured by Kesare, even before his descent to the Sapphire. He in turn adored his grandmother, and was her regular Escort as she went about her duties. She continued to specialize in those illnesses and disorders that only a Dual Caste or a Circle made of both Castes could Heal. Given her limited power, she focused particularly on diagnosing. She could call on her family, Coven, or students if she needed more strength. Her Rapport technique for Healing was perfected with her grandson, whose complete trust and great strength allowed them to swiftly Heal all but the most severe injuries to mind and body.

Kesare's first husband was killed in the second Invasion of the Great War, and she was reluctant to permit another that much power over her happiness and well being. But she was still very young, and very lonely. Kesare bore a child, and did not grant paternity rites. But then ... no one showed up to ask for them. Her daughter Anastasia was born in 409 BP.

Black Widows and Priestesses alike became confounded by unfathomable visions in the Tangled Webs. Glimpses of the future, no matter how mundane or routine, would regularly morph into hideous, crushing death. No one understood it, but the sheer pervasiveness of the visions made them a concern.

Then the Second Askavi War began. For twenty years her family sacrificed and fought, but Dhemlan lost. Five siblings, the rest of her children, a dozen grandchildren and her husband were all devoured by the war, lost to the vicious, unnatural Eyriennes. Then the Occupation began, the draining of food and resources, the systematic looting of treasures and Blood. Kesare's mother was powerful and skilled, but too old to worry the Askavi overlords; she was permitted to maintain a Court at home, with only one Eyriene monster forced into her First Circle.

Jamal was assigned away from home, to serve the Askavi. Kesare never saw him again.

For more than five hundred years Dhemlan groaned under the weight of Askavi rule. Still the visions plagued Kesare, even though she could not imagine a worse situation for her people. Lost and restless, crushed by the deaths of her husband and children, she returned to what she knew. She headed back to the Academy to teach, and to study the Priestess Caste as well. Not only was this the route her Mentor walked, but there exist spiritual wounds and diseases as well as physical and mental. While no member of the short-lived races could fully master three Castes, the Lady Confessor was living proof that the long-lived could.

Kesare began to re-engage in life, was courted successfully and once again embarked upon a good marriage. While it resounded with the pains of their past, both treasured the new family all the more for what had been lost. She gave birth to three more children, one a little Queen. Her mother had an heir at last. For all of recorded history, there been a Fuentes Queen at Castillo Fuentes.

The little Queen Violetta's Birthright Ceremony gifted her with an Opal. The Territory Court insisted that she be handed over as a Ward of the Court, but Kesare had the wealth, political skills, and allies to refuse. As a compromise, her family moved to the Territory Court so that Violetta could be "trained" by the Askavi-controlled Court.

Shortly before Violetta's Offering, the Purge happened. Kesare was amongst the few survivors at the Territory Court. She helped cleanse the area, working alongside the Eyriens, the Blood and the Broken. She assisted those who nursed the Broken Territory Queen back to health. She was kept at Court until the Territory Steward finished assessing how many had died, and just how much land and how many estates, she would inherit.

She was in no rush: none of her family had survived, not her mother, nor her youngest daughter. Kesare herself only lived because she had just finished a tricky lesson with the Priestesses and had not one speck of strength left in her Jewels.

After she was dismissed from Court to tend to her affairs, she repeated the process of cleaning, cleansing and burning. She had expected to find no-one alive at her estates, the class-minded upbringing of her family leading her to forget about the Jewelless Blood and the Landen until she saw them, struggling to recover.

Most of the Blood had left or suicided, leaving her demesne inhabited primarily by the Landen. With the death of her family at the hands of Witch, indeed the death of so many she had been taught to value, she had to re-prioritize her definition of the "deserving." As such, she strives to fight down her hatred of the Eyrienes, the Landen and the Light Jewels she carries. Most of her hate is now reserved for warmongers, those who further destroy the land with 'total war' or 'salted earth' tactics, and for a long while, the Priestesses.

Since so few of the Blood are left on her Estates, she takes an interest in them. She does not, however, trust them to rule themselves. For administration, she appoints a 13 person council in each local area. It consists of a five person Men's Circle, a five person Women's Circle, and three appointees. The appointees are from the District Court, the Conquistadors, and one person of her choosing. The men's Circle consists of the town Mayor, the Innkeeper, the Miller, the Blacksmith and the Sheriff. They are balanced by the Women's Circle, consisting of the the Eldest (the oldest healthy female), the wise, (the teacher to the young), the Midwife (herb and knife healer specializing in women's issues and childbirth), the Herbalist (herb and knife healer generalist), and the Speaker (the best educated female). If a Blood wants to rule, they had better qualify for one of those positions and be nice about it.

Kesare currently holds the largest consolidated estate on that coast, almost half of the district. It is a thorn in her side that she is the one running the estates, despite being neither Prince nor Queen. As a particular hardship, she has neither village, district, province nor Territory Queen.

Kesare and her Stewards do administrative paper work and pass on Tithe in her area. She helps support the local Conquistadores, as they are all she has in the way of police and military. She writes regularly to the Warlord-Prince Savion about these and other concerns, though she suspects no-one reads her letters. (In truth, her area is quiet and runs smoothly, the Court has bigger troubles, and everyone is starving.)

Where possible, she has had powerful shields put around estate manors, libraries and other such treasures. She tries to hold them in trust for the future, although hope for the future dwindles.

Kesare is well respected in her field, and since the Purge has been sought out by those of other Territories for her particular skills. At first she both taught and healed only within Dhemlan; eventually it was all of Terrille. After about eighty years, she began to get requests for aide to damaged Queens and Warlord-Princes in Kaeler; her high skill, Dual Castes, but relatively low Jewel strength meant foreign Courts were less wary of retaining her skills.

When she was called to Mine Heal in other lands, she would drive herself to exhaustion, volunteer amongst the poor after finishing her expensive, highly paid Healing. Even the Landen, from whom she accepted payment in farming techniques, top soil, seeds, and fertilizers. She returned home each season, to take care of paperwork, write to Savion Eusaka, and drop off the latest farming tips from the Landen she had been healing.

In order to facilitate her travel, and to avoid becoming an unwilling permanent addition to a Court, she negotiated with the Territory Court in Raej and the Territory Court in Little Terrille for the equivalent of Merchant's Papers. These papers do not allow her to transport bulk goods, just healing and Craft supplies, one patient, and one Guard. She still must pay the fees and travel only during the approved three days a month that travel is allowed. She is also responsible for returning her patient and guard to their Territory of origin within a Calendar year.

She is not powerful, her Healings are often slow, and usually include counseling, acupuncture, massage and other non-Craft techniques, sometimes requiring visits to either safe or traumatic locations. Kesare prefers to do long-term Healings (those that take more than a month) at her own home, although anywhere that is emotionally and mentally safe for her patient will do.

Kesare has been reluctant to access the Dark Gate since Warlord-Prince Logain Morr collared Queen Bride Marchalan in 185 AP. She fears the ambitious Warlord-Prince. He is handsome, charming, intelligent, powerful ... but dark souled. She feared his catching her off guard, so dreads her renegotiation of her Papers. She needs to re-negotiate the old terms; Lady Marchalan had agreed to a free healing at the request of her Court for each passage Kesare required, paying all the travel fees, and a modest payment to the Court itself. It is highly unlikely that Logain will be so generous. Her usual plan of just outliving troublesome short-lived people has been easily side-stepped by his mixed blood status.

The Advent of the short-lived Jonathan Harmaa to the head of Little Terreille has her both relieved, and concerned. He would be easier to outlive, but he'd backed by that most terrifying of things - a Black Jewel. He is also likely to discover that she owes a Healing in Little Terrielle.

Odji Khaldun is also terrifying to Kesare, and only great need caused her to deal with his Court at all. She did not manage to negotiate so pleasant a deal with Raej; she must pay a much higher bribe with each passage, as well as a free healing at Odji's request, and one free healing every other year regardless of her need for passage.

This travel has allowed her to pick up farming tips and supplies from many places. When she travels, she makes it a point to stay for an extra month or so in order to assist the local Landen and the Jewelless Blood. She charges Aristo and Court personnel heavily, Jewel-ed Blood enough to salve their pride, and only what Landen or Jewel-less Blood offer.

Kesare feels ancient, feels the burden of every moment of her 1,000 plus years, but she is in no way bored. She is closer to being overwhelmed than to being bored. There is so much left to learn, left to see. There are many things yet to accomplish, and things she achieved in the past that she would like to do again.

In 190, she had just finished the Healing below, and was on her way to the Academy, after her first trip to Pruul to heal the Mineborn. She had heard rumors of a new Queen there. That Queen was indeed a distant relative, but chose not to adopt the Fuentes name, the culture or to remain in Dhemlan.

From there, she headed again to Pruul, where she began to Heal all of the Mineborn. Then to Hayll, for a member of the Hundred Families. And while there, she sought out contact with an old ... enemy, Kashar, in order to find someone to teach the Mineborn Warlord Prince, Lucky, to fly.

And while negotiating with Kashar in an ancient Temple, she met Gideon Cinnerus, and once more heeded the Call to become a Priestess.

Kesare has a unique, somewhat dangerous relationship to the Jewels of her People. She can affect them, and use them, under conditions where it should not be possible. Because of this, she is especially good as a Mind/Chalice/Spirit Healer ... but she has declined to learn how to lead an Offering or Birthright, for fear her unique gifts might inhibit or damage the child. She would never willingly risk that. Most Ceremonial Rites she would choose to leave in the hands of a born Priest or Priestess; her gifts are for other purposes

    Character in Play:

    Truth in the Dark
Kesare studied the Pruulian Warlord sitting across from her in the small, disordered room in the desert city of Oon.

Dark circles ringed his weary eyes, crows feet pinched his drawn face. Shaggy brown hair, once well kept, dusted his shoulders. He was typical of the Pruulian city dwellers in looks, but unusual in that he had asked an outsider for help. She judged him to be middle aged, but wasn't sure; the short-lived races grew old and died while still seeming as children to her. But they still loved, and worried, as this man's appearance attested.

Kesare slowly drew her white kidskin gloves back on, delaying the moment before she must speak her diagnosis. He was short-lived, yes, but strong. Summer Sky was nothing to toy with, and might even be sufficient. Her brilliant amber eyes never wavered from his face, assessing him. Was he skilled enough? Disciplined enough? Could he love a Blood child enough to risk his sanity (and hers) for a young man who had not even received a Birthright Jewel?

Her slender mouth thinned further, as she disciplined her mind away from such thoughts. They belonged to a world that had died in Witch's Purge, to a family that disowned any who had no Jewels. Not to a frightened father, who just wanted his son back, and a lonely Healer with no kin.

"Your son's mind is locked in a loop," Kesare finally spoke. "Experiencing the trauma of his sister's death over and over. She was more powerful than he, and the Psychic shock he felt at her death damaged his will, his inner self. Simply healing the physical trauma is insufficient. We will need to do many small repairs to his Chalice, one at a time. Between each Chalice repair, I will heal his body."

The Warlord's gaze intensified when she said 'we,' but he did not speak the fear flickering in his eyes. His chapped lips framed the words: Black Widow Coven. His fear for his damaged son in  the hands of an entire coven of Black Widows told her that he wasn't stupid. His reaction to her next statement would tell her how well trained he was.

"Not my Coven, no," her smokey alto tones were gentle, reassuring. She gestured between them. "You and I." Her Coven were ashes now, reflections of Witch's wrath. Only the Lady Confessor, Black Widow, Healer and Priestess; mentor, teacher and former friend, yet lived. Kesare had not seen her since the Purge.

The Warlord's dark eyes, brimming with hope and relief one moment, suddenly snapped to a cold fury. He was no Warlord-Prince, but she felt him rise to the killing edge. His muscles drew whip-cord tight as he sought control. Harsh words grated out of his throat, "I am no Healer."

Kesare's gloved hands smoothed her coal black hair, buying time for her to control her own temper. "No, but I am both Healer and Black Widow. I have the skill. You have the strength." Her slender body canted away from the angry Warlord as she Called in a fine bottle of wine and several expensive bees' wax candles.

"Pour the wine, Warlord, while I tell you who I am." She lit the candles one by one. He might need the soothing anesthetic of alcohol to endure hearing her life story, but she would definitely require wine to speak of it.

If he were part of a Court, or wealthy, or noble she would not bother to explain. If he were long-lived, she wouldn't need to explain. In truth, she could not define what desperate hurt in his shattered face led her to coax him to agreement, instead of taking her fee and leaving. She had already done what he asked: diagnose the problem. And she was well aware of the fact that the four little red hens in the carry box were all he could spare.

She relaxed her shields, allowing her natural empathy to expand, so as to have warning should he fail his bid for self-control. She drew a tiny sliver of power from her White stone, having little reserves after a difficult and delicate Delving. Her Psychic threads wrapped the shabby room in a soothing warmth, a barrier against the bitterly cold Pruulian nights. The candles flickered and threatened to go out; they steadied as she finished the weaving, allowing air to flow normally.

She hadn't used Seduction webs meant to enflame the Blood's senses, or even a Healer's emotion control Threads, but rather a Thread that filled the room with a physical comfort and emotional blotter meant to ease the Warlord's anger. Then she waited. She showed neither fear, nor challenge, but allowed the man to come to his own peace in his own time. Short-lived commoner or no, he was still male, still prone to the violent bloodlust of their people, still deserving of the full intricacies of Protocol.

Blood were Blood, no matter the race.

With a careful precision he opened the aromatic burgundy wine and filled their glasses. The ritual of pouring wine, and perhaps the fine vintage, soothed him enough that the dangerous moment passed.

"I was ten at my Birthright Ceremony, exactly ten years old," she began. "I will never forget that day." Smoke and fire danced in her mind's eye. That had been the day the Eryiens attacked Dhemlan, fierce warriors diving upon her family, striking from the shielding glare of the sun. Death and chaos echoed in their wake. "You may know the date as the start of the first Askavi war." She left out her parent's pained disappointment at the White, her siblings' teasing. She watched as he worked through the dates. Something that was little more than ancient history to him, was living memory to her.

Like the Dhemlan civil war six thousand years ago, that had torn her home province into three districts and placed a Warlord-Prince on the Province seat. Six thousand years ago was beyond recorded history for most of the short-lived territories, but to her, it was personal. Her dad had fought in the civil war, her grandfather died for it. She was raised on the stories. The hate.

The Warlord relaxed further, drinking in her presence, her age. When she judged him ready, she continued. "A born Healer from a powerful Aristo family, I studied at the Dhemlan Academy for the next ten years." She had missed her family, missed their castle in the mountains. It guarded the southern coast, square in the middle of the Ciraea district of the Sarque province.

She skipped lightly over the deaths, the need to push every Healer as hard and fast as possible because of the war. Her first assignment, on the front lines. She rode the swell of emotions, fought her way back to the present only to see a quiet understanding in the Warlord's eyes. He refilled her glass but asked no questions. He knew what war was, in any era.

She toasted him, emptied her glass and held it out to be refilled once more. The candles burned steadily, reflected in the deep red wine, the clear crystal glasses. He obliged, without more of an editorial than a raised eyebrow. Sometimes, men could be so comforting. Her rare, fleeting smile rewarded him.

"After the First Askavi War was over, my brother Rafael was badly injured in mind, spirit and body. I returned to the Academy, and learned the art of the Black Widow." She left out how long it had taken her to master the second Caste, the help and sponsorship of the Lady Confessor, her family's profoundly respectful delight in her being Dual Caste. "A century or so later, we healed my brother." Her voice softened to near awe, for watching the Lady Confessor work had been the most mystical and amazing Healing she had ever seen, one of the most precious memories she had.

A good marriage, delightful children, a powerful Warlord-Prince grandson. She had been so happy, the only mar in her life the odd visions, warning of a great darkness crashing down on them all. Then the Second Askavi War, the one they lost, that bankrupted their nation, crushed their culture, murdered sons, brothers. Her husband.

"During the occupation," a second marriage, a Queen daughter, another chance at a glorious life. Another glass of wine, a whisper. "After the second Askavi War, the one we lost ... I served at the Territory Court, and took some rudimentary training in the Priestess Caste ..." The occupation had tried to steal her beautiful Queen daughter. They had all moved to the Territory Court, the Askavi not willing to see so powerful a young Queen raised outside of their influence.

The Priestess training she had sought was partly an attempt to emulate the Lady Confessor, partly to understand the vague warnings of Witch's terrible wrath. "I was trying understand the visions, the ones that crept into every Widow's Web before the Purge." Perhaps it was the wine talking, maybe it was simply time, but her rage poured out of her as freely as the wine poured from the bottle.

"It was the Widow's job to share that warning, of the Darkness crashing against us, Breaking us. And we did! But we didn't understand it, thought the vision must mean Askavi, or the Treaty of Queens, but as time passed, the visions only grew in intensity."

"It was the Priestesses who remained silent. The Priestesses whose job it was to tell us why. It was and is to this day, their sacred duty to speak out when the Darkness is angered. To take a stand against collaring of the blood, against rape, compulsions, mindless slaughter; whichever of the Blood's many excesses angered Mother Night should have been announced, even if it meant death, or (worse yet to a Priestess) the loss of status. But they remained silent, unwilling to voice The Darkness' rage. They watched, as my people were slaughtered by the thousands. Ten generations of my family lived in Fuentes Castle at the time of the Purge. Only I remain."

The Warlord leaned closer, listening intently. His hands remained steady, but his eyes reflected her rage back at her. They had all been betrayed, the Landens as shattered as the Blood, the short-lived Territories as well as the long-lived. This Warlord had not been born at the time of the Purge. She returned his gaze steadily. His father had not seen it, nor his grandfather ... there would have been five generations between him and that world-shattering moment.

It was possible he had never heard it spoken of by someone who was there.

"Only I remain," she whispered. Amber eyes dilated to nearly black as she allowed herself to remember. It was important she tell it accurately, yet impossible to find words that expressed the terror, the pain of that moment.

"I could not fight the Purge, it was Black Jewel power, Black and more, something other. A Black web so powerful it redefined Darkness, stealing vision, hearing. There was a smell, as of lightening and then I was both falling, and being crushed. With my gems drained from my dual roles, and Priestess training, even instinctual resistance was barred to me. I could only surrender to it, surrender to the destruction and try to balance on the wave of power. Can an ant stop a great oak from falling? No, and no more could I so much as divert its crushing strength. Like the ant, I could only cling to it, ride it down."

She paused for a sip of wine, unable to force more down her dry throat. Her hand didn't tremble, although her voice did. She returned her gaze to the Warlord. Still, he asked no questions.

"Perhaps that is why I felt Witch's revulsion, why I hate Priestesses so much. Perhaps I alone in the world know what they failed to tell us, know why Mother Night ravaged us so. What I know for certain is that my exhausted, helpless weakness is why I survived with sanity and gems intact."

She put the emptied wine glass down on the shabby table, and flicked her gloved finger through the candle's flame. The light shimmered and danced across the Warlord's craggy face. He had the inward-focused look, the slightly shocked expression, so many short-lived races gained when forced to confront the sheer weight of time the long-lived carried. When his attention returned to her, she continued.

"I have found strength in the weak, in the Broken and in the desperate that cannot be found in a proud castle on a hill."

There was, after all, a purpose to this story, and a boy to be healed.

    Petitions (if any):

Caste Requesting : Adding Priestess, making Kesare tri-Casted.
    Reasons For Requesting these Castes:

Kesare is a complex character, driven to a specific, narrow unity of purpose in Mind Healing. She was born a Healer, and that need to nurture and care for others is a constant refrain in her life. For the love of her brother, she stretched and bent her soul so that she might take up the burden of Black Widow, as well. It took her almost one hundred years to learn to do so, and her soul might always have fought those new instincts, except the Great War and its Occupation blended the two Castes into a unique whole, a Mind Healer. Even before the Purge, Kesare deeply and powerfully felt the need to understand. To understand herself, her patients, the Blood. To discover truth, if it were out there to be found. That deep longing and need, the constant drive for knowledge and wholeness, led her to Priestess Caste training.

But the Purge came, and she blamed the Priestesses. For two hundred years, she refused the Call, refused the Healing she needed. But at last she has begun Seeking the Darkness again, found a route to truth that embraced her sensual, embodied nature instead of denying it in the tradition of the Dhemlanese Priestess.

Blood Magic unifies her complex personality and soul, and has been a route to truth and power she would never have found if constrained to the training traditionally available to Priestesses.

This Caste will not make her all powerful, but further focus and highlight her nature as a Mind Healer.

    Threads:
     Her re-awakening to spiritual matters
Chapter has Ended - Pruul, Chani
Hope and History - Dhemlan, T, Filomena

    Training
We Rise to the Height of our Halos - Hayll, Gideon
My Witness, My Eyes, My Evidence - Hayll, Gideon
Your Little Piece of the Divine - Hayll, Gideon

    Growth
Shattering the Silence - Pruul, Zenja, Gideon
The heart of the Storm - Pruul, Gideon
Sleep Now in the Fire - Pruul then Hayll, Gideon

    Plans for this Character:

Kesare will continue to Heal the Mineborn, acting is many respects as Aunt/Sister/Mother to the battered lost children of Pruul. The third Caste will aid greatly in dealing with Pruul's culture and the specific, deeply spiritual wounds of the Mineborn.

Kesare is currently engaged in the revolution in Hayll, and there will be many in need of aid as that ancient land is torn apart from within in a Quest to complete Witch's work.

Kesare will be instrumental in the Petition of Dhemlan, Terrielle, helping to rebuild her shattered land. Her tri-Castes and history will allow her dialogue with nearly every faction, even ones who disagree with her deeply.

Kesare owes a healing to Little Terrielle, though Dash has not yet decided who to heal, and the terms of the new Contract.

Kesare owes Healings (2, I believe) in Raej, and has Gavin's character's twins to check up on. She will be involved with the Priestess I owe Dani there.

Kesare is supposed to go to Askavi, Terreille offer her Mind Healing to the one Envoy whom Gideon had successfully rescued before the revolution. She really doesn't want to go.

It is my goal to have her eventually work a Mind Healing in every single Territory.

    Other Petitions you’ve made here:

Calum, a dual caste Warlord Prince Black Widow in scelt.

Hello!

For Kesare, I need Tal plot approval, emails on the way.

Apparently I can't petition for full descent, so I modified my rolls request above! :)

I don't need family rolls for her, unless someone wants to re-vive and adopt some of her dead loved ones, would I ask for them later, or now?

Sorry for all the questions!

I would like to petition for Kesare's third Caste, and have her Blood Magic applied.

I have fixed no longer relevant fears, likes and dislikes.

I have added to her personality.

I have added to her history.

I linked the threads showing her personal growth.

I added her Craft Strength / Craft weakness.

Her purchase of the Blood Magic and the Caste are here:
