Provinces & Districts of Dharo
« on: Oct 21, 14, 04:53:18 PM »

The Territory of Dharo is located on the southernmost coast of the Kaeleer mainland. The Territory has proven to be incredibly fertile despite the hilly nature of it’s countryside. There remain few forests in the Territory as much of the land has been taken over for agricultural purposes and is dominated by green fields and crops throughout the year. The few dense forests that remain are well protected by the Territory. And the coastal region is best known for it’s fresh seafood.

The Territory is split into 3 Provinces: Lancashire, Tabotshire, and Wartonshire. The capital city of Coventry sits within the Province of Tabotshire, just inside the mouth of the River.

Over the years the boundaries of the Provinces have shifted in an attempt to provide each Province with relatively the same amount of land; previously the Provinces had been defined by natural boundaries - such as rivers, forests and the occasional hill. Within each of the Provinces there are 2 Districts. The villages have grown organically around the focus of agriculture, mining and fishing - and dot the landscape of the Territory in small batches. Towns originally grew organically around trade routes between villages and cities. And the cities have become the focus of economic trade within the Territory, but particularly with the neighboring Territories.

Flat & Fertile.

The Lancashire Province is the northernmost Province within Dharo and borders against Little Terreille and Dhemlan. Two of the three largest rivers in Dharo are situated in the Lancashire Province, one in each of the Districts, and are the focal points of civilization in Lancashire.

The Province is the most fertile in Dharo and is primarily flat lands; however rolling hills are often a common site in Lancashire Province and are usually covered in various crops grown and exported from the Province. They are responsible for the majority of the exportable and consumable crops within the Territory of Dharo.

The majority of the people of Dharo also live in this Province. There are six major cities, three in each District, that support the economic and agricultural growth of the Province. The work available in the Province ranges from farming all the way to mercantilism.

Ruler of the Lancashire Province: (Unnamed NPC)

Ruler of the Kempton District: (Unnamed NPC)

The Kempton District is the larger of the two Lancashire Districts and is situated in the west of the Province. The River Tannon snakes between the northern Mountains and the western coast; linking together the cities of Cantford and Landemouth.  The city of Landemouth has always been a facilitator city for commerce and growth within the Kempton District, and had served as the funnel goods in and out of the western part of the District. While the city of Cantford was carefully built in the shadow of the great mountains, away from the farm-able land, and along the base of the river. Far in the east of Kempton lies the trading city of Venidon, which is situated in the center of a cluster of Winds making it a prime location for trade in Dharo.

Ruler of the Taunton District: (Unnamed NPC)

The Taunton District is the smaller of the two Lancashire Districts and is situated in the east of the Province. The District's 3 rivers flow through the city of Calmouth before reaching the sea. From north to south the rivers are named: River Basten, River Haelten, and River Falnan, flow into a single river mouth and are the primary source of travel and revenue for the District of Taunton. The three major cities in Taunton are all situated along the various rivers and make facilitate their commerce more often through the rivers than through the Winds. The city of Anenvale is situated in the valley of the northernmost mountains in Dharo; and was built on the commerce of lumber and trade before shifting efforts into agriculture several thousand years ago. The city of Lanford is the southernmost city in the District and is the most agriculturally prosperous in all of Dharo; it is one of the smallest cities but it has the most prolific markets that are easily reached by River and Winds. The countryside around the city is dotted with tightly built villages, so as not to disturb the arable  land and crops.

Coastal, Hilly & Craggy

The Tabotshire Province is the south-eastern most Province within Dharo; it borders each of the other Provinces and the sea. The capital, Coventry, is located within this Province at the mouth of the River Avon. All of the major cities within the Province are located near large bodies of water: Coventry on the mouth of the Avon where it meets the sea, Hereford along the twisting lines of the River Avon, Dorsea on the coast bordering Wartonshire, and finally Stonehaven-by-the-Sea (true to it's name) which was along the coast.

The Province contains fertile land primarily in the north, but the better part of the land has been cleared for stock and grazing. This is especially the case along the coast where the hearty sheep can survive the sea air and salt. However the people of Tabotshire are known for their stubbornness and have made even some of the msot hopelessly infertile land grow crops; their efforts supported heavily by their Queens. Primarily the Province is considered to be hilly and particularly craggy along the coast. Tabotshire is home to Dharo's primary sea based industries: ship building, mercantilism, fishing, transportation and tourism. Tabotshire is the primary vacation spot within Dharo during the peak summer seasons.

Ruler of the Tabotshire Province: (Unnamed NPC)

Ruler of the Venford District: (Unnamed NPC)

The Venford District is the most populated of all Dharo’s Districts and contains the capital of Dharo, Coventry, which has been consistently overgrowing it’s borders for hundreds of years despite an attempt to protect the farmland and villages bordering the city. The District also contains the River Avon, which twists and turns its way from the forests bordering Lancashire all the way to the coast straight through the heart of the city of Coventry. Another city, the walled city of Hereford, sits along the River Avon as well and historically has shared much of Coventry’s wealth due to trade facilitated by both the River Avon and the winds that make connections between the cities easy for even light Jewels. Coventry’s economy was founded on trade and both imports and exports that can be facilitated through the winds that cross nearby the city and the river that grants it access to the seas of Kaeleer. Venford’s agricultural success has been encroached upon due to the growing cities, while the number of inhabitants in the countryside declines.

Ruler of the Yarton District: (Unnamed NPC)

Fishing is the most common industry within the Yarton District and they produce much of Dharo’s fish exports to the rest of Kaeleer. Yarton’s coast are particularly famous for their beauty and the dramatic cliffs of white chalk stone which line the most southern coast of the Territory. Both of Yarton’s major cities are located on the coast and thrive from the sea based economy of fishing, mercantilism, ship building, and occasionally smuggling (usually Sceltic whisky or Dhemlanese wine). The southernmost city of Dorsea is an ancient city with a particular rivalry of it’s neighboring island based city in the Wartonshire District. It is particularly known for it’s safe harbors and therefore supports the majority of the legitimate coastal business in Yarton. While the city of Stonehaven-by-the-Sea, located in the east of Yarton, is more commonly the hub of illegitimate business as is the coast to the east of the city.

Woodlands & Mysticism

The Wartonshire Province is the south-western Province within Dharo, and borders the other Provinces and the sea. While the other two Provinces provide the majority of the fertile land, and therefore crops, to the Territory Wartonshire's primary export is lumber and stone. The Province is covered with heavy dence woodlands and strong mountains which provide the quarries for the stone. The further away from the capital of Coventry the less civilization will be met along the travels.

History within the Territory is ripe with legend and mysticism. This is especially true for the District of Westwood; which legend says used to be a Territory called Cymrea, powerful and respected throughout Kaeleer. The woods and mountains located in the heart of the District are considered dangerous and few venture within. There are stories of travelers being lost for days and even stories of those who never returned. The urban legends are difficult to separate from the truth but there are many who take the long way around the center of the District by choice.

Ruler of the Wartonshire Province: (Unnamed NPC from Northwood)

Ruler of the Northwood District: (Unnamed NPC)

The Northwood District has historically been the primary seat of power for the Wartonshire Province. Lumber and wood works are the primary exports from this District with plenty of wood available from their lush, dense forests. Northwood may be home to many aristocratic families, and well to do merchants, but few spend their time in the District; prefering instead the life and culture of the capital city of Coventry. Within Northwood there are two key cities. The larger of the two, Thorcaster, is located in the eastern part of the District, near the border of the neighboring Provinces. Thorcaster happens to be well placed within a juncture of several powerful winds which has helped its cause as a trading post within the Territory. Arinthorpe, the western city within Northwood, sits along the coast and just north of the Westwood District. History might say that the two Northwood cities of Thorcaster and Arinthorpe together with the Tabotshire city of Dorsea created a border of defense against the former Territory of Cymrea.

Ruler of the Westwood District: (Unnamed NPC)

Many in Dharo have forgotten that Westwood was once known as the Territory of Cymrea {link to the Article}. Though there are many within Westwood who have not forgotten such an important detail, nor have they forgiven Dharo for annexing their Territory against their will. The people of the Westwood Distirct are particularly tough, capable of living off their land and little more, and have long memories. The District is well protected by the sea and mountains that contain it. The port city of Limnport is the primary gateway for entrance into the District, despite being situated on an island off the coast. There are few winds that travel directly over the mountain ranges protecting the District and Limnport is a large junction that provides direct access to the winds that criss cross over Westwood. The northern city of Claremont sits within the shadows of the Snowdon Mountains, carefully protected by their influences and the woods that border the other sides. There are no direct winds into Claremont and the closest landing pad belongs to the Purple Dusk but is situated within the Snowdon mountains. The pass between the landing page and Claremont is trecherous in the best of weather. Despite this Claremont is the largest city in Westwood and home to many of the Cymrean descendants.
