Appearance

Play By: Ilias Petrakis
Distinguishing Features: He's graying a little bit at the temples and has quite a severe nose/brow combination that always makes him look like he's about to kill something - or at least thinking about it. You can pretty much tell he's a Warlord Prince from a distance, even without catching his psychic scent. He has a very gruesome scar on his chest where he was quite literally impaled by several large shards of heavy wood. His chest also appears to be a bit more caved in than normal.

Personality

Personality: Samson’s general disposition is not one of geniality. He isn’t cruel by any means, and unless provoked he isn’t openly hostile either (though few are daft enough to provoke a Warlord Prince, no matter his Jewels). Gruff and surly are both words used in conversation about Samson (when the man isn’t around to hear, of course), usually in the tone of apology or sympathy - both for whom they’re speaking to and the man they’re speaking about. His children likely have it best, though. They tend to say that he is “grumpy”. When he does smile or laugh, it usually comes in short bursts or hidden coughs - almost like he’s embarrassed of the display.

This general grumpiness is directly tied to him feeling - and being more than a little bit awkward around many things. Sam is a man with very firm, secure walls around his comfort zone - and for the past seven years his comfort zone has been in the shape of a ship. Years ago, his comfort zone had included (for the most part) his estate and children - but he has been long out of sync with the rhythm of life among his family. Moreover, his children have all changed and grown up so much now, it’s nothing like it was before. This isn’t to say that his former crew would have ever called Sam a friendly or affable man - but there was a level of comfort he had on the ship that allowed him to relax a little.

Even on the ship, though, Sam kept a firm distance between him and his crew - between him and everyone. The only time any of them would really see much more personality from him besides their surly Captain was if one of them fell ill or injured - in which case, no matter who of the crew it was, they would find themselves suddenly under the direct supervision of an obsessively protective Warlord Prince. It was a very bizarre switch for those witnessing it for the first time, but those who’ve been around him for years and had seen it crop up time and again, it was more a sign that their Captain well and truly cared about them. A few were even daring enough to whisper that it was sweet - well out of earshot of course and certainly not while they were the subject of protective fussery.

And it’s true - Samson does care. He cares a great deal. About his crew, about his staff, and most importantly his children. He just… has no idea how to show it in a conventional sense. Feelings were awkward, alien things even before his wife died - but when she was around she somehow seemed to be able to direct him in those matters. Now, without her…

So instead he shows his care in the only way he really knows how - he protects and defends. In the months since he’s returned home he has overseen the training of his staff to include combative defense. Even the kitchen maid knows how to shield now and they all have exact procedures on what to do and where to go in case of a threat or emergency. Only the children have been quite so brazen as to call the shift in defensive protocol around the estate “paranoid”.

Likes:
  • 1 - The sea. Samson knows where he is when he’s at sea. He knows what he’s doing, he knows how to do it. He knows how to maintain his ship and manage his crew. Out at sea defending his Territory’s waters and thus the people on her shore gives him a solid purpose and that’s something that he needs. But there’s also something else, something about the crisp salty air that almost feels more like home than the grand estate he returns to on each leave.
  • 2 - Sweets. Samson is actually rather embarrassed for his less-than-manly affection toward sweets, but it doesn’t change the second slice of tart he has every evening after dinner. He enjoys the taste, of course, the sugary sweetness light and delightful to his senses - but there’s also a simplicity that he craves, a joy and a peace that the sweets give him that remind him of times where it was okay to be… happy.
  • 3 - His children. Not that they necessarily realize this all the time. Samson isn’t the best when it comes to showing affection, but he does love and genuinely like his children - even with all their antics. He is amazed at the people they are growing in to and is eager to see where they will end up.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - His injury. It’s frustrating and limiting. He can’t go too long without feeling twenty years older than he actually is, and he’s only forty-four! His chest gets tight and starts to ache, he can’t catch his breath and he has to sit down like some invalid. Which, and he hates to acknowledge this, he at least in part currently is.
  • 2 - Anyone bringing up the fact that he’s been broken. This is non-negotiable. It is not a topic he permits. Even when he has to talk about the circumstances that lead to him being temporarily grounded, he only ever acknowledges the actual physical injury and never the one done to his soul.
  • 3 - Incompetence. He dislikes incompetence in general and does not tolerate it on any ship he runs, but he is particularly frustrated with the apparent lacking in those who dared called themselves “professionals” when they couldn’t handle his children. They’re children for Night’s sake. Children! How is it that so many so-called “nannies” and “tutors” aren’t able to handle them? Sure, they’re a bit spirited, but they’re still children.
Fears:
  • 1 - Being permanently lamed. There is nothing worse for a Warlord Prince than to geld him, and that’s what this injury feels like. He’s terrified that he’s been taken permanently from his battleground and he’ll no longer be able to protect and defend his Territory and the Queens that rule it as a Warlord Prince of Dharo.
  • 2 - Harm coming to his children. When he was off at sea this was a distant fear, one he could bury deep inside his heart and focus on the more immediate matters of running his ship. Since he’s been home, however, he cannot bury that worry as deeply as he was previously able to. He’s already lost his wife, the woman who was well and truly his best friend, he could bear harm befalling any of the children they made together as well.
  • 3 - Heights. Sam prefers to say that he "isn't fond" of them, but the truth of the matter is that he's afraid of them. He had to do his time up in the crows nest while learning the ship and even as a boy it had made him pale and shaky and uncertain. As an adult, he battles it as much as he can - but mostly he just avoids having to go too high. When in a tall building, he avoids having to look out the windows or keeps the curtains drawn so he can pretend he's closer to the ground. Now if only his children would stop climbing all those trees he wouldn't have to imagine them falling to their deaths every ten seconds - or, alternatively, him falling himself, having decided he needed to go up to rescue them.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Incite Rage. Samson’s ability to inspire the rage in lower-casted males is one of the reasons he’s been so successful as a Captain defending his homeland’s shores. He can incite his crew when they go into battle against another ship - targeting only his own crew - to give them the edge.
  • 2 - Heating/Cooling Spells. Embedding warmth into shields are his particular specialty but he does have a generally high aptitude for most spells involving temperature. This had allowed him to always have hot tea no matter where he is or how long a conversation has drawn out - and keep himself warm even on frigid winter nights at sea.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Jewel Management. While this has never been a strength of his, any proficiency he may have garnered over decades with his Tiger Eye was erased and then reversed the moment he lost it. He’s completely lost touch with how to manage only his White, and stubborn pride keeps him from practicing with it to remember what it was like to only have such a limited well at his disposal. As a result, he often drains his White even on simple spells.
  • 2 - Sensing Emotions. Samson can’t even sense his own emotions in a completely mundane sense, and he certainly does not have the mindset to be able to do so on a more magical level through the use of craft. This never used to bother him - but now he’s living with a gaggle of children, many of them teenagers and two of them teenaged girls.

History:

The match between Samson Graywarren and Sarah Barrow was not one made for love. It was a marriage of alliance and convenience between two very old families wishing to raise their mutual standing in society. Sarah and Samson had known each other since they were children, got along well enough, and balanced each other well in temperament. Even their goals were compatible - Sarah wanted to manage money, connections, and serve the Territory on a domestic front. Samson was a navy man who wanted to keep his hands out of upper crust squabbles and defend his homeland at the shore. They both wanted independence - and they also both wanted a family.

So maybe the love they eventually grew to share was not quite a romantic love, but it was a love just the same. They were friends, and occasionally they were lovers. They were husband and wife. They were partners. They had eight beautiful children together and with each other and the family they were growing it didn't seem so difficult to be able to compromise on some of their ambitions.

Sarah hired a dedicated assistant and a man to manage the books, and Samson stayed with ships that lingered closer to the shore with frequent enough returns to port so that he could be a relatively constant presence in his children's lives.

At least, until Sarah grew very ill after the birth of their eighth child. She lasted little more than a week before she passed, leaving her husband a widower and her children motherless. Sam did not handle the loss of his wife gracefully. Already a bit of an aloof man, he closed himself off. He became notably more volatile with anyone who wasn't well-known and well-trusted. He threw himself into his work. He began taking longer assignments further and further from the shore. He rose in rank, and the higher he climbed within the navy the more he withdrew from his family. He never stopped loving them.. but Samson had never shouldered the burden of parenthood alone - and without his wife.. he didn't know how. In fact, he was sure he just... couldn't.

Instead, his children were raised by a small army of governesses, nursemaids, tutors, cooks, servants, and the general staff that served at the Graywarren estate. When he was actually around (an event that happened more and more rarely as his children got older) - he did venture to spend time with them, but with unreliable results. He just couldn't keep up with the growth in their personalities and the shifting of their opinions of him, considering he was away so much. Generally speaking, though, he commanded respect when he was around if for no other reason than that he was a Warlord Prince who knew how to run a ship. In the limited short term - these tactics also suited him well for running a household and a gaggle of children (well, the older ones, the younger ones he left to the nursemaids almost entirely except for very short intervals of time during each visit).

And then... everything changed again.

A battle out at sea left him near-dead and broken of his Tiger Eye. It was a miracle he survived at all - and the internal injuries were severe enough that the verdict is still out on whether or not he will ever be able to return to active service. If he taxes his body too much as he is now, his heart might fail completely and that's too big of a risk for anyone to consider handing him command of a ship again, or even letting him out to sea.

So he's returned to his family home. He's returned to his children. He's trying to heal and learning to cope - and learning, it seems, to parent.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:

"What do you mean, she quit?" Sam's voice was low, steady, and very, very cold.

Hamish, his butler - normally quite an unflappable man all things said and done, swallowed thickly. "I've got her official letter of resignation here, sir." He produced a slim ivory envelope and offered it to his employer, then stood silently by as the gruff Warlord Prince tore it open and skimmed the contents.

“She’s quit,” he growled after a moment, tossing the letter and envelope together onto his desk.

“Yes sir, as I said,” responded Hamish without a trace of cheek or irony.

Sam was a bit at a loss if he was being honest with himself. He’d been home for almost two months now - the longest he’d been on land in a single stretch since his wife died seven years ago - and in that time they’d been through six persons intended to instruct, monitor, and care for his children. Two nannies and four tutors. Apparently, his children took more kindly to the nannies and didn’t seem to be actively chasing them off. At least, not with the same sort of gusto and vigor with which they attacked the tutors.

It was really getting to be a bit ridiculous.

“Was it really this awful before?” he asked Hamish suddenly, turning to study the man. There had been a few times when he’d received letters regarding the behavior of his children (particularly regarding Brixton and Bently, but they were eleven-year-old twins and a bit of mischief was to be expected with boys that age, particularly when they were gifted a partner in crime from birth), but it certainly hadn’t seemed this out of hand.

Hamish seemed to consider his words carefully, like he was deciding precisely how honest to be with the Warlord Prince who paid his salary.

“Well,” he said after a moment, “it does seem like they’ve been more… rambunctious of late. You returning home is exciting for them, sir - regardless of the.. circumstances.” He glanced at the hardening expression on Samson’s face and hurried on. “You’re their father - and any child craves the attention of their father. You are naturally required to spend more time with them around the changing of the staff…”

“You believe they’re doing it on purpose to get my attention, Hamish?” Sam’s tone was skeptical.

“Maybe not consciously, but it has occured to me that that may be a factor…”

Samson sighed and looked at the letter again. For a long moment he was silent, and then he shook his head. “Whatever the reason, it doesn’t change the fact that the children require a tutor. Some of the older children are around the right age to begin apprenticing as well, so perhaps I will investigate that route. For the time being, however -” he looked back at Hamish “-see if you can round up someone willing to step in.”

He then turned to go back to what he’d been doing when Hamish had shown up with the letter and the news that another tutor had quit, expecting the other man to show himself out. When he didn’t immediately do so, Samson looked over at him expectantly. “Was there something else?”

Hamish cleared his throat. “Yes, well. It seems about thirteen chickens were locked in the carriage overnight… We’ll be hailing you a rental from town for this afternoon’s appointments, and Lady Melissa has requested the temporary hire of a few other hearth witches she’s familiar with to assist with the clean up and… repair.”

Thirteen chickens… in the carriage… overnight.

Samson let out a slow sigh and tilted his head back, staring at the ceiling before closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. “Very well, Hamish. See it done.”

Hamish nodded and moved to leave, but paused when the Warlord Prince called out to him in query.

“Hamish?”

“Sir.”

“Do I even need to ask?”

Hamish didn’t smile, but he sounded like perhaps he wanted to. “There is no proof as to who the culprit was, sir. Though Lady Melissa did say she thought she saw chicken feathers in the boys’ room this morning.”

“Ah. Thank you Hamish.”

“Very good, sir.”

EXCELLENT. This was literally exactly what I had in mind which I was gonna reduce too if I didn't get something pretty or randomly inspirational.

Now, if you please, shatter his Tiger Eye into a bazillion pieces.
