* Plot Information for Dharo

The intrigue that drives, and plagues, the Territory of Dharo has built and destroyed empires throughout the Territory; and everyone is eager for political power. The reign of Rheava Evesham has been challenged by these power struggles and even more so by the undercutting of power in her Court. The game of politics had bred the need for Spies within the Territory and they have become the backbone of the Queen's reign.

Appearance

Play By: Elyse Levesque
Distinguishing Features:

Emma’s reddish-brown hair reaches just above her shoulders. Her skin is always a touch more tanned than the average Cymrean, owing to her love of the land and being outside whenever possible. She has two arm-band tattoos on her right arm, her dominant side, as a tribute to her Cymrean ancestors. A line in the center of the bottom band trails down the back length of her right arm, ending in a circle on the back of her right hand. A second band exists on her thigh with a line that flows down the back of her right leg, down her ankle and heel, ending on the bottom of her right foot.

Blue eyes focus on those speaking to her with keen interest. Smiles don’t come easily to her, but when they do, her eyes light up a bit further.

She wears a gold pin in the shape of a bumblebee on the lapel of whatever outfit she's wearing. If asked, she says only that is a gift from a friend.

Personality

Personality:

Emma Morgan is not just a Queen but she is descended from the last Queen of Cymrea over a thousand years ago. Rather than rest on the laurels of long-past glories, however, Emma first beliefs are service and duty. The land is hers to feed and nurture so that it will feed and nurture her people. It is not just her desire but the will of Mother Night that she stand in defense of her people. She puts tremendous amounts of pressure on herself at all times, constantly checking and rechecking her motivations in order to do the highest good for her people. Her smiles are rarely genuine. Sex is one her few true enjoyments and even the afterglow pales in comparison to the hunt preceding it.

Emma is not altruistic or a heroine of the people, though she plays the role quite well. In her mind, the highest good for her people coincides with the highest good for her. Serving herself serves her people, whether it means increasing her personal prestige or pursuing greater feats of Craft. She leverages contacts and allies to put herself in the best possible position to increase her holdings. Those who keep the faith with her reap the rewards through increased pay, position, and favors as her station allows. By fulfilling the ambition and achievement granted to her by the Darkness, Emma will return Cymrea to its glory or she will die trying.

Deep down, however, she is unable to truly rest or appreciate the strides she makes toward her goals. Her enemies want to push her people into the sea and erase them. Her detractors call her imperious, claiming that she wants to restore a fallen Territory that was crushed not by others, but under the inertia of its own corruption. Petty and stupid people claim she has no true friends, only allies of the moment who would support a better Queen if she came along. Others say that when she laughs, it’s only due to the misfortune of others. The blood in her veins demands that she answers these slights, real and imagined, by destroying her enemies lives and livelihoods or silencing her detractors permanently. But that isn’t how things are done in Dharo. The sword gives way to the pen and the blade cannot cut deeper than well-placed words. So Emma sheathes her anger and wages her battles in the Courts while turning hearts and minds to the righteousness of her cause.

When Cymrea rises again, those who spoke against her will have to live with shame of being outmaneuvered in the game they created.

Likes:

  • 1. The Land:  Beneath the feet of all is the land of Cymrea, land where her ancestors once ruled and charted their own destinies. Nourishing that land with her blood is an honor and a duty that Emma takes pride in executing. Even in the pittance called Westwood, she loves the feel of the grass beneath her feet and the chill of the water flowing between her fingers. No matter how large or small the plot, Emma tends it with the affection she’d give her children, if she had them.

  • 2. The Grand Game: Some call it the game of thrones or the path to power. The Cmyreans call the power plays and intrigue of the Courts "The Grand Game". Emma relishes clandestine meetings, backroom dealings and double-talk that “The Game” requires, and she loves connecting lines between the people in power and those who curry favor with them. While Dharo’s particular version leaves much to be desired, she’s read widely on how it works in Dhemlan and other Territories and playing The Game to win back Cymrea is her driving goal.

  • 3. Mornings: Emma is the ultimate morning person. Getting out of bed on a daily basis is her second favorite activity, after following the political currents of the District and Province. She is up before the sun rises to exercise, eat, and commune with the land before beginning her work for the day. Her mind is freshest and most alive in the morning and the young Queen expects others to be at the top of their game, no matter how late they were all up the night before.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Being Overlooked: Tegwen Llewllyn, Catherine, and Mary were all considered contenders to District Seat while Emma was relegated to an afterthought. She believes the color of her jewels had a hand in that, but more still it was Emma’s less conciliatory nature toward Northwood that sealed it. She’s had time to readjust her views, but being overlooked for any reason swiftly ears her ire.

  • 2. Relying on her Jewels: Her grandmother once told her that being powerful is like being a lady: if you have to tell people you are, then you aren’t. Emma doesn’t have the deepest standing in the Abyss and accepts that; there is always someone with darker jewels. Jewels measure only the well of power she can access, but they don’t define her. When dealing with people, Emma takes greater pride in creating allies and outflanking adversaries politically than using her jewels to achieve her goals.

  • 3. Spices: Emma loves spicy food. She does not love the effect it has on her stomach. More than once she’s woken in the middle of the night to flame racing up her throat and a fierce need to empty her belly of the night’s over-spiced dish. Diplomatic dinners are a long, slow march through hell for the young Queen and her weak constitution shames her. Much of the time, Emma eats her food with the minimum amount of seasoning needed to distinguish it from topsoil. She envies the seeming cast-iron stomachs of those around her.

    Fears:

  • 1. Ruining the Cymrean Dream: The Cymrean people have waited 1,000 years for the right to rise again and embrace their true heritage. Years of failed and ineffectual leaders have raised and dashed the hopes of a proud people who seek independence. Emma Morgan doesn’t fear failing to attain her people’s independence: she will succeed.

The part that keeps her awake at night is what comes after they’ve won that long and hard battle. Winning a throne is always the easy part. Keeping it safe from those who will try to take it after is the true challenge.

  • 2. Not Being Good Enough: On the good days, her detractors say she’s merely an overly ambitious Queen with delusions of grandeur. On the worst days, they call her a joyless harlot wrapping herself in the image of a fallen nation to gain allies. She has been kind, warm, and pleasing and yet the whispers continue. History will tell the final and true story. Yet history is written by a number of people and those people find fault with anyone they can’t easily tear down.

People will overlook all manner of success to find a single failure in which to define someone. Emma fears that even restoring Cymrea won’t be enough for those who want to see her brought low.

  • 3. Dying in Childbirth: Emma’s mother died giving birth to what would have been her younger brother. Even after all these years, the memory of the light fading from her mother’s eyes and the sound of her brother’s cries slowing and then ceasing wakes her in the middle of the night. She is unyielding about taking her contraceptive brews and refuses to discuss the idea of a serious relationship. If she ever became pregnant, she would seriously consider ending the pregnancy to avoid her mother’s fate.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Seduction Craft: Emma’s focus on manipulating the desires and motives of others has found a unique focus in her use of this craft, a bastardization of the Queen’s Touch that she lacks. Upon physical contact, Emma can instill a wave of physical pleasure and relaxation in a target. Unlike the Queen’s Touch, this only affects the target on the physical level, so any underlying anger, worry, rage or other feelings present will remain when it ends.

  • 2. Land Sense: Legend holds that the land itself owed fealty to the Cymrean Queens of old, alerting them of their enemies' approach. Laying hands upon the ground, Emma can accurately determine the number of people on the land around her within fifteen miles of her location. She can also gauge their rough direction of travel to her and their rate of approach.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Queen's Touch: Emma’s Touch is nearly non-existent. Even her most successful attempts to impart the peace of the Queen’s Touch leave her males needing more. This is one of her few sources of shame, for she has no idea why this staple ability of her caste eludes her.

  • 2. Witchlight: Emma’s use of this craft creates a single, small sphere of light no brighter than a candle. She cannot change the intensity or temperature of her Witchlight. Furthermore, it is always stationary; it will not follow her no matter how hard she concentrates.

    History:

Betrys Morgan, a well-known Cymrean Black Widow in the District of Westwood, once part of the Territory of Cymrea, foresaw her granddaughter birth two years before it occurred. She told her son, Idris, who advised his wife to stop taking her contraceptive brews immediately. Idris and Branwen were ready when Emma entered the world. Before her exhausted mother or elated father could hold her, Betrys scooped up the child from the Healer and counted all of her fingers and toes. Only when she was satisfied did Betrys allow Branwen to hold her the little girl. Both parents considered the infant Queen a blessing from the Darkness and Branwen named her Emma, after a heroine in old Cymrean history.

Emma was the apple of her father’s eye, spending every available moment she could with the Prince. She rose early each morning, trying to get up earlier than he, but never managed it. Even in her adult years, it comforts her that her father is always awake before she is, one of the few constants in a life where allegiances and friendships can change between breakfast and dinner. Her cousin Gwennth, just a few years her senior, quickly became her staunchest friend and the pair have been inseparable almost since meeting. Both women walked away from their Birthright ceremonies with a Yellow jewel, binding them even closer.

Raised on the lore of the old Territory of Cymrea, Emma hoped that someday she could help her people regain their homeland. She always felt that she heard whispers in the winds and trees of the forest, but they always just a bit too low for her to hear. Her parents were already members of one of the pro-Cymrean leagues trying to earn greater status for their people within Westwood, but a number of Dharoan Queens stifled their cries for greater freedom.

Her mother became pregnant with another child the year of her Birthright ceremony.

Unfortunately, mother and child passed away during childbirth early the following year, leaving a hole that couldn’t be filled. Idris spent more time away from home, working as the Steward for a Queen in Northwood while Emma spent time in the care of her father’s brother, Emrys and his family. Emma took solace in being closer to Gwen and used that to balm the pain of her father’s absence.

    It didn’t last.

Idris was not idle in Northwood. He plied his charming manner and management ability to make friends among a number of Cymrean sympathizers, including several in Coventry. Eventually, he was assigned to Coventry and he took Emma along. They arrived in 176 AP, the month after Rheava Evesham was toppled from her throne and Alora Kent rose to power. The new young ruler captured twelve year-old Emma’s attention in the same way the stories of her ancestor Queens had when she was little. Alora, for her part, saw something she liked in the young woman and she was one of several young Queens who took dinner with Alora on a regular basis. It was here that she learned the first steps of Dharo’s political machine. Emma’s forthright nature and fiery words earned her few friends, though it was said that Lady Kent considered the girl “refreshing”.

A bit of private coaching from Alora and much private childing from her father taught Emma to mind her words, no matter the offense given. Her father introduced her to other Cymreans working at the Territory level to increase the status of their people. Things were upended once more when Alora was cast out of power and Rheava Evesham retook the throne she sits on even now. Emma felt little connection to the older Queen and kept up secret, encrypted correspondence with Alora over the years. On the eve of her Offering ceremony, Emma received a gift from her friend: a golden bumblebee pin that Emma wears on every outfit.

Her Tiger Eye Offering jewel meant that she’d never possess the deep well of power that the rest of her family, or even Alora, held but Betrys urged her to learn the heights and the depths of her jewels for that knowledge would serve her people someday. In doing so, Emma learned of her unique connection to the land. She met a Warlord Prince named Bevan Halloran during one of her delvings and felt the world shift as their bond bloomed into life. It was also with Bevan that Emma learned of the shame she discussed only with Bevan, Gwen and Betyrs.

The Queen’s Touch did not function for her.

Six months of trial and error allowed Emma to craft a bastardized version of the ability from training imparted to her during her time in Coventry. Emma’s touch can be shared with whomever she wishes, but only provides physical pleasure leading to arousal in males without the attendant sense of peace and contentment of the true Queen’s Touch.

Emma returned to Westwood seeking a village to rule while working herself into contention for the District seat. Her time in Northwood and Coventry worked against her, however, as the other pro-Cymrean faction labeled the Queen out of touch and “more Dharoan than Cymrean”. Their words made her angry but Emma understood now that verbal counterattacks were merely one part of her arsenal. She traveled both inside and outside of the District, using her Craft to aid other Queens in feeding their land. This gained her friends among the lower-ranked Queens and Landen who often felt ignored by those at the District level. When Tegwen Llewllyn succeeded Lady Charlotte as the ruler of Westwood, Emma took a position in the Third Circle.

Meanwhile, she became involved more deeply in the fight for her people’s recognition, even challenging the Province Queen to prove that she is not anti-Cymrean by requesting the restoration of lands taken by Northwood. Each year, Northwood enlarges their Territory at the expense of Westwood. Each year, her people are pushed just a little further toward the sea.

Emma refuses to see her people’s customs, lands, and traditions burned away. To that end, she has taken up the tattoos worn in old Cymrea, believed by legend to grant Queens a deeper tie to the land. Her purpose is chosen and her path is clear.

The Northwood District has taken from them for over a thousand years.

It’s time to take it all back.

    Character in Play:

The hall leading toward the southern end of the estate wasn’t especially long, and Emma had run its length a thousand times as a little girl. Now, as a woman of twenty-seven, every step toward the last room on the left made the brown and gray tiled hallway feel like a never-ending tunnel to the depths of the world. Each step took her closer to inevitability. Each beat of her heart meant there was one less for the room’s occupant. Her cousin, Gwennth, reached out and took her hand almost by reflex and Emma held it, lacing fingers with her surrogate sister and best friend, almost pulling her along. Sensing her distress, Bevan, the Warlord Prince bound to her by the Darkness quickened his steps to follow both women.

Emma fought the urge to run, knowing grandmother would hear it in her voice if she was out of breath. Even at the end of the world, Betrys Morgan still hated it when people ran inside her house.

Emma opened the door to find her father, Idris, holding vigil next to his mother. Betrys was renowned for her skills as a Seer, having warned Emma of many things in her short life. Without her grandmother’s said, both she and Gwen would have been dead a thousand times over by now. Betrys was a lioness, capable of cowing men and women with her mere presence in their Courts without the power of her jewels.

Now she just looked old and withered, two words she would never used to describe their grandmother in her near-century of life.

Idris looked to Emma and nodded. His eyes were red-rimmed and teary, indicating that he’d been crying. To Emma’s mind, her father hadn’t stopped crying since the passing of her mother and brother twenty-one years ago. Yet the Prince stood, shoulders squared and spoke with the steady tenor for which he was renowned.

“Thank the Darkness, you made it. She asked for you, Em.” he said. Without another word, Idris turned and left the room, the door closing behind him.

Bevan pulled up a second stool for Gwen to sit in while Emma took the one vacated by her father. She reached out and grasped Betrys’s right hand. It was so cold and clammy that Emma had to fight the urge to recoil. Betrys turned her head toward the two younger women and smiled. One of her eyes had gone milk-white with blindness decades ago but one was still a deep, dark brown, full of knowledge and energy.

“Lady Gwennth. Lady Bumblebee.” the old woman said, smiling softly.

Gram, don’t call me that.” Emma said, smiling as she fought back tears.

“I’ll call you what I want.” Betrys rumbled, before turning her head away as a hacking cough stole the rest of her words. Once composed, she looked back at the young women.

    Emma spoke first.

You can’t leave us.” she said softly.

    You can’t leave me.

“I have no more say in this than you do, Emma. Our dreams are in your hands. Gwen has benefitted from my knowledge over the years, but it is you who will restore our people. I have done what I can, but the sands in my hourglass low.

Your time is now.” Betrys said.

What if I’m not strong enough? They’re all darker jeweled. They Dharoans own everything, Grams.” Emma said, trying to keep the anger at the Northwood people and the Province Queen out of her voice.

“They do not own our souls or our wills. You are a Queen, child, but more important you are Cymrean. We know struggle better than any and we have waited long enough. I saw you, sitting on the throne of our people as the Queen of Cymrea Reborn, larger and more powerful than ever before. Hold on to the Dream and you will win in the end, Lady Morgan.” the Black Widow said.

Emma froze. Grandmother had never told her that, no matter how many times she asked. Emma had a thousand new questions but there wasn’t time to ask them. She lifted her grandmother’s hand to her lips and kissed it.

“And if they own everything, then they have everything to lose.” the older woman said.

A single tear fell as Emma realized that this was it. Betrys never spoke plainly when a riddle would do the job. Emma’s resolved crystallized and then became stone in her chest, filling the place where her heart used to be.

Then that’s what I’ll take from them, Grandmother. Everything.” Emma said.

“Good. Now go. I won't have this as your last memory of me. I have things to say to Gwen.” she said.

Reluctantly, Emma Morgan rose from her stool and left the room, glad for Bevan’s support as he helped her leave. She flowed her “Touch” into him and heard him shudder in pleasure. He would want more later and just now, Emma was obliged to give it to him.

First, there was business to deal with.

Her father waited on the other side of the door.

Make the arrangements father, whatever needs to be done. I’m ready.” Emma said.

I saw you, sitting on the throne of our people as the Queen of Cymrea Reborn, larger and more powerful than ever before.

I don’t care how much blood we have to spill or how many lives we have to ruin. No more holding back. No more gentle diplomacy. We will restore Cymrea.” she said, looking at both men as she grasped their arms and let her strength flow into them. Both closed their eyes in rapture and nodded.

    No matter what it takes.
