Personality

Personality:

While around adults, Beckett seems somewhat reserved, though still cheerful. He tends to blend into crowds he’s with, sometimes because he’s shorter than a lot of the people around him, and sometimes because he doesn’t want to be noticed. He’s quietest around his family, though he is rarely with them now. If they are around him, he’s mostly silent, as if he’s trying to disappear.

Around children, he comes alive. He does voices while reading, comes up with all sorts of imaginary scenarios to act out, and thinks of plenty of creative projects to keep them interested in learning. He’s slightly less animated with his older students, finding that they need different things from him.

Anger is an uncommon emotion from Beckett. It takes a lot to make him angry because he tends to shut down instead. Jewels or no, he is still Blood, and if pushed, his anger can grow vicious and cold.

To most people, he is kind and open, willing to listen and give advice if needed. He thinks of himself as easy to talk to, partly because he is so unthreatening. Eager and engaging, Beck does his best to draw others into conversation, although he is also no stranger to comfortable silence, and he leans on his ability to sense emotions to figure out what the other person needs and respond accordingly. He only feels the need to fill quiet gaps in conversations when he’s with someone he finds especially attractive. It’s something he wishes he could stop, but despite his best efforts, it continues.

Likes:
  • Knowledge: Beck loves learning new things and sharing knowledge through teaching, especially children. He wants to know everything about everything, and this transfers to wanting to know everything about everyone as well. Things that others may consider to be idle gossip are things that put marks in his pockets. While he does not spread gossip around to everyone else, he will pass along things he learns to the correct people.

  • Kids: little kids have the best imaginations, and they say some of the funniest things without meaning to. Beckett also likes seeing the wonder they have for things he’s long forgotten learning about or seeing for the first time. With older kids, Beck likes hearing about their plans for their lives, and being a trusted adult to give advice they might actually listen to.

  • Cuddling: Beckett likes most forms of physical contact, even as small as touching someone’s arm when he’s talking to them, but he especially likes cuddling. Whether it’s with a romantic partner, snuggled up with his best friend to catch up over hot chocolate, or just with a kid who wants to sit on his lap so he can read a book to them, Beck enjoys the closeness.
Dislikes:
  • His family: Beckett’s brother and father treat him like he’s less than simply for being who he is. None of his living relatives have disagreed with them, so Beckett has little contact with any of them, and he fully intends to keep it that way.

  • Tea: why does anyone like to drink hot, often bitter, grass-and-stick-flavored water? No amount of honey or sugar or milk can seem make it palatable to him. Coffee is by far the superior choice of drink, followed closely by hot chocolate.

  • Not Having Jewels: Although this resentment started with how his family treated him for his lack of Jewels, Beckett has found a great many things that would be easier if only he had Jewels. Children that he tutored would likely respect him more. It would also be easier to get useful information pass along. As it is, he has to rely mainly on people being careless or assuming he’s harmless.
Fears:
  • Getting caught: Beckett tries to be careful on what information he passes on, when, and to whom, but he is very afraid of getting caught. He worries partly about what might happen to himself, and even more so about what might happen to those he cares about in retaliation.

  • Horses: after an incident where Beckett was run over by a horse-drawn carriage leaving him with a broken arm and ribs, he avoids interacting with horses. It’s somewhat difficult with how common they are in Dharo, but he does his best. If he’s forced to be around them, his obvious fear tends to make them uneasy, too, and it’s all around unsafe.

  • Water: One more thing on the list of reasons Beckett’s father was disappointed in him was his early aversion to water. It started when his older brother pulled him into deep water, not realizing that he couldn’t swim yet. And after that, he refused to learn. Any attempt to get him into the water was met with extremely loud shrieking, enough that even his Dad stopped trying to force matters. Beckett never did learn to swim, and so any sort of deep water makes him nervous.
Craft Strengths:
  • Telekinesis: through a lot of practice, Beckett has honed this skill as much as he can. Though his skill is not equal to that of Jeweled Blood, he is proud of the control he does have over objects he wants to move. It is especially useful because he is short, so it allows him to get things from high shelves or cupboards without having to bother someone for help.

  • Psychic Sensing: Beckett is especially good at sensing the emotions of others. He learned this while trying to judge how angry his father was in any given situation, or how his brother was feeling to decide whether or not he needed to escape to a different room.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Witchlight: one of the many things that Beckett finds annoying about lacking Jewels is the fact that the witchlight he can create is nearly useless. He can’t read by it because he gets so into the books that his witchlight will go out. Dimmer than even other Jewelless Blood, his spells barely light up a room enough to see anything clearly.

  • Shielding: Since his shields are largely useless, Beckett never spent much time practicing with them. He can keep himself dry for a decent enough amount of time, but that’s about. If he was in a dangerous situation, it would barely occur to him to shield in his own defense.
Life Story

Best Friend: Vianne Sawyer (b. 165 PP), Rose - Summer-Sky witch
Vianne’s Grandmother: Willa Sawyer (b. 113 PP), Summer-Sky to Purple-Dusk Healer

History:

The second son of a proud Navy man, Beckett was a disappointment starting as a young child because he was always small, unlike his older brother, Harlan, which was one of the many ways he was compared constantly to Harlan. His father was very disappointed when he did not receive a Birthright Jewel, also unlike his older brother. He received schooling on principle, along with activities that his dad hoped would toughen him up.

As Beck grew up, he found any and all excuses to avoid being at home. If it was not his father getting after him, it was his older brother. The only person he wanted to spend time with was his mother, who taught him to cook and sew, which only made his father angry. She refused to let him bully her into stopping, though, and she was Beck’s only ally.

When he was twelve, his mother grew ill and despite their Healer’s best efforts, she passed away quickly. Beck was in the room as she died, and the last thing she said was that she loved him and that he should be strong. He agreed, confused because it felt like something his father would say, and along with grief grew resentment. Why would she teach him things that his rather disliked if she wanted him to be what his father wanted in the end.

It was during his mother’s brief illness that Beck met Vianne, the granddaughter of the Healer. She quickly became his best friend, and she and her grandmother were his escape from his remaining family members.

It was not until years later that he realized what his mother had meant: that he needed to be strong in the face of his father’s anger and disappointment. Then came guilt for how long he had resented her. Every time he tried to make his father proud, he failed. Beck could do nothing right, while his brother could do no wrong. Harlan even followed in their father’s footsteps and joined the Navy. Beckett refused to make any attempt at that since he knew it wasn’t the right fit for him

Even more disappointing to his father was when Beck failed to descend even to the White. Beck found himself disappointed and frustrated as well. He was not even strong enough for the lightest of White Jewels? Beckett did not get out of bed for several days after his failed Offering, which was yet another thing that made his father angry. “Real men” did not wallow, after all.

After pulling himself together, Beck returned to his usual pattern of avoiding being at home as much as possible. He found work doing whatever he could, such as serving tables in a pub or manning stalls in the market. He eventually found that information sells very well, although doing so was dangerous as well. While he had no desire to become a trained spy and move up in any sort of organization, he found that he tended to be ignored, which meant he was able to hear a lot of interesting things.

The money he earned went directly towards training to teach. He wanted to give kids support that he did not have when he was young, and he just loved working with them. Eventually he was able to swap information sales and tutoring, so that his main income was tutoring, and information was something he passed on because it was something useful to do for the Territory.

His situation at home was growing progressively worse, and just in time, Beckett’s best friend, Vinanne told him about a private tutor position available at the estate she worked at. She conveniently left out the fact that the kids were hellions who refused to be tamed, and so off he went, finally on his own without his father’s influence.

Character in Play:

Today was the day. Time for his Offering. Even though he didn't have a Birthright, Beckett felt confident that he would manage to at least get an Offering. Sort of. Maybe he was feeling more hopeful than confident. Although he didn't tell anyone, not even the Priestess he was working with, he was afraid of what might happen if he didn't walk away with even the White. His father was going to be disappointed... and angry.

As a shiver went down his back, Beck shook his head and turned his focus back to the ceremony ahead. His father's anger was not what mattered right now. He would not be able to change that if the ceremony went that way.

The Priestess smiled at him as he arrived and Beck offered her a shaky almost-grimace in return. Then he took a deep breath and blew it out before managing to give her a more genuine smile instead. Too bad the Priestess didn't look convinced. That probably didn’t bode too well for him.

“Alright, this way, Beckett,” she said, gesturing him forward. He took another steadying breath and stepped forward, doing his best to calm himself and focus on the task at hand. He had spent hours thinking about it already, imagining the White Jewel he could have. The Yellow would be great, too, but he wasn’t about to get greedy now.

The ceremony began, and Beckett followed the Priestess’s instructions exactly. Time passed, and when the ceremony came to a close, Beck found himself still without a Jewel to call his own. He stared down at his empty hands, and the bleakness he felt showed on his face as he looked up into the eyes of the Priestess. In the moment, he wanted to blame her for it. How could this happen? He had done everything she said. Everything! Clenching his fists, Beck took several ragged breaths, trying to keep the tears at bay. His father would call them weak if he saw them.

It wasn't the Priestess's fault. Logic barely won out and he stepped away from the altar, shoulders slumped with the defeat he felt to his very core. Beckett’s feet dragged on the floor as he walked away, the Priestess trailing behind him, and with each step, fear began to set in.

Now he had to face his family.
