when all the world is here to look
« on: Apr 24, 19, 09:39:51 PM »
Jacinthe sat in the middle of a workroom that looked like it had been through a natural disaster - a flood, a tornado, or a hurricane perhaps. There were bolts of fabric piled haphazardly everywhere. Large sheets of paper hung on the walls, colored strings criscrossing to connect scraps of cloth, lace or ribbon to various sketches.

Half the circle around the Hearth Witch was occupied by five dressmaker's dummies adorned with different costumes in different stages of completion. In the center was an elaborate gown with wide bell-shaped skirts and long fluttery translucent sleeves that was complete but for the trim. On one end was a dummy wearing a short, gauzy asymmetrical skirt of rainbow hues and six large dragonfly wings only half covered in crystal scales. The others included a military jacket, a tuxedo with long tails, and a very simple one-strap dress that fell to the floor in a cascade of satiny fabric.

Jacinthe herself was humming as she crawled on the floor, moving from one sketch to another, adding a detail here, changing a line there, filling in a bit of color or shadow somewhere else. The Hearth Witch looked up from the sketches, one sketch zooming across to the dragonfly wings, looking from them to the sketch and back several times.

As she began rearranging the crystal scales, Jacinthe broke into song:

Memory/ all alone in the moonlight/ I can dream of the old days/ life was beautiful then/ I remember the time I knew what happiness was/ let the memory live again.

Her voice faded back to a hum as the young woman dove at a pile of fabric, clearly searching for something specific. Fabric flew everywhere before Jacinthe stood up triumphantly as she belted out with
Look a new day/ Has begun!

After all these years Raluca knew that Jacinthe had a pattern. Every time that they prepared for a new show--ensuring they had the costumes, the set pieces, and other things ready--the Hearth Witch would inevitably lose herself in her work. There was nothing wrong with that.

Except, of course, when it meant that Jacinthe was not actually making it for meals. Nothing could make Raluca turn into a mama bear type than one of hers not eating. Marku had wisely said nothing when he saw that look in her eyes while they ate their lunch. Instead, he just offered her a silent thread of Rose, the reassurance of his presence.

It made her smile but did not temper her mood. Considering that Margerie was not going to be around as much--Raluca ignored that sharp pang in her chest; the kind that was associated with a parent realizing all over again that a child had grown up--she would have to keep a sharper eye on Jacinthe. Just to make sure that she did not completely sink under the proverbial waves of the design department within Tantalus.

Raluca heard the singing first, which brought a smile to her face. That faded away into a fond but exasperated look as she took in the state of the workroom. It wasn't really out of place for it to be like this but it spoke of the Hearth Witch being far more singularly focused than she had expected.

The moving pile of fabric, where clearly Jacinthe had likely buried herself under to find something, made her shake her head. A chuckle escaped as the Hearth Witch appeared, Raluca smiling as she stepped further into the room. She said nothing about how good her voice was, not wanting to see her clam up. Instead, she said: "I suppose this explains why you missed having lunch. Clearly, you've been doing battle with the workroom again." Raluca moved carefully, stepping around things without touching or otherwise damaging them.

"Fortunately," continued the Rose-Jeweled Black Widow, "I've brought lunch to you." She moved towards the table that she had placed in the workroom solely for a plate of food to rest for Jacinthe.

Jacinthe swiveled towards the Black Widow as she spoke, startled. She hadn’t heard or sensed Raluca entering her workroom. “Lunch?” the Hearth Witch blinked owlishly at the other woman. “It’s not lunch…?” She trailed off as she looked over to the clock on her wall and saw that it was, in fact, past lunch. Quite a bit past lunch. “Oh.”

The chagrin in the younger woman’s voice didn’t stop her from walking over to the plate of food where she snagged a green bean and popped it in her mouth.

She moved to the nearly completed ballgown on the center dressmaker’s dummy. “Come look at this please.” She began tugging the skirt to the side. “I was thinking this should have slits here and a compartment, underneath - for props to be stored in, the handkerchief, the necklace, the letter.” She waved a hand dismissively. “Calling something in with Craft is...is...is inefficient.” She’d had to search for the right word and wasn’t quite sure she’d found it. “It’s too obvious. You agree, right?” She frowned at the costume, deep in thought. “But the skirts are detachable - to make costume changes quicker. If someone steps on the hem and exposes the compartment…plus the shape has to be such that it isn’t noticeable as the girl moves...” She trailed off, lost in thought.

Suddenly she dove for her sketch pad where it rested on the floor, her pencil moving furiously to make an outline of the skirts with a compartment; formulas, calculations and measurements filling the margins as the Hearth Witch worked out what kind of stitching and threads wouldn’t compromise the attributes the costume needed to have and make accidents less likely to occur - she had to minimize the amount of Craft that went into holding the pieces of clothing together so that if she weren’t the one assisting in the costume change, whoever did assist wouldn’t have to try to remove her spells, wasting time. While her pencil was moving, Jacinthe was muttering to herself, the presence of the Black Widow - and the food - completely driven from her mind as she lost herself in the problems presented in her design.

Raluca's lips twitched in amusement as Jacinthe slowly realized just how far past lunchtime it actually was. It was a fond exasperation, the kind that came from years of having known the Hearth Witch and seen her grow up. Her frustration faded bit by bit as Jacinthe actually snuck bites of tasty morsels from the plate.

She hummed agreement, moving to look at the piece that the Hearth Witch was working on. As Jacinthe described what she wanted, what she was thinking, Raluca was circling and studying. "I wouldn't say inefficient," said Raluca, "but it lacks the flair that we're known for. Craft is expected but sleight-of-hand with a touch of chicanery and misdirection would serve a better purpose and-" Her eyebrows rose as Jacinthe disappeared off into the woods of her work once more.

The Black Widow moved, studying Jacinthe's sketch and finding it more than appropriate for what she was wanting to achieve. After enough years at this, Raluca trusted the Hearth Witch's decisions when it came to costume and set designs. What she was not going to put up with, however, was the entire not eating thing.

"Jacinthe." Waiting until just the right moment, until Jacinthe had finished making an edit to her work, Raluca vanished the pencil from her grasp. "I truly do appreciate all the forethought and more that goes into your designs and all the work as well but please ..." The pencil reappeared in her hand as she pointed towards the plate of food. "Eat."

Was there anything worse than a mama bear Black Widow? Probably but then who wanted to find that out. "Take a few bites, mull it over, and then return to your work." Raluca slid the pencil into place above Jacinthe's ear. "You're on the right track. Save for the larger, flashier objects that can only be brought in with craft, I do prefer that the items be hidden on the performer." A glance went around to all the fabric that was strewn everywhere. "... though I suppose I should be asking if we need to make another purchase of materials or do you think we've enough for the show?"

So completely focused was Jacinthe on her calculations and her sketching that when her pencil vanished, her hand kept moving several moments longer before she blinked at her empty fingers, comprehension slowly dawning. She turned on her knees to face Raluca with eyes wide behind the large frames of her glasses, guilt written large in her features.

“Ahh...I’m sorry Raluca.” her voice was contrite. “It’s just…” She trailed off as she stood, absently tucking the pad into her back pocket as she did so. She hastily made her way over to the table with her plate and very deliberately took four bites, chewing them quickly, swallowing hard to get the food past the lump in her throat.

“I don’t want to think about…” She broke off, pulling the pencil from behind her ear to play with it, twisting it between her fingers, rolling it from hand to hand.

To avoid annoying the Black Widow who was her mentor further, Jacinthe grabbed another green bean and pretended to nibble at it, though she didn’t actually eat any of it this time, her throat was too tight. She too looked around her workroom, studying the piles of fabric as she considered Raluca’s question about materials.

“I think we have plenty fabric and most everything else, but I'll need some good thick wire to make the pockets.” She pulled out her sketch to take another look. “Maybe a dozen yards of heavy canvas and waxed linen thread too.”

She crossed the room to a cabinet in the far corner, pulling out a bottle of water. The Hearth Witch opened the bottle, but didn't drink, instead peering into it's depths. “Why does everything have to change?”

Raluca was not a Black Widow who walked the winding paths of the Twisted Kingdom. No, she relied upon the instincts that she had as a Black Widow but preferred to live in the moment. To follow the Twisted Kingdom would have been beneficial as a Shaos but mostly she saw it as counter-productive. Her mind was sharp, her eye for detail even sharper, and she knew how to handle people better than most Black Widows could.

She was personable and warm, unlike so many. It was because of that--because of the years that she had interacted and watched the world around her--that she was not unaware of Jacinthe's true concerns. Raluca knew the signs, knew when someone was throwing themselves into their work so they wouldn't be eaten alive by their thoughts. Once upon a time, many years past, she had done similar.

To a certain point, she still did when there was too much work to be done and not enough time.

At least Jacinthe had eaten some, though it barely satisfied the maternal instinct within the Black Widow. "You don't have to apologize," said Raluca gently, moving carefully through the fabric and otherwise strewn about with a grace born of her caste. "I understand, gosling." The old endearment rolled off her tongue easy as always. She only ever used it when the Hearth Witch needed to hear it.

"Change comes whether we like it or not." On the Black Widow's face was an understanding look; a soft given. "Even now, as we talk, it's happening." Once close enough, she lifted her hand up and touched the tips of her fingers to Jacinthe's cheek. "Change doesn't mean the end of something, you know, or that you lose something. It’s just another beginning."

Jacinthe closed her eyes at the other woman’s touch, letting it and the endearment soothe some of the hurt she didn’t want to admit to. After a moment she pulled back and finally took a small sip from her bottle of water. Then she moved away, heading to one of her piles of fabric.

“There is a small problem I needed to bring to your attention Raluca.” From the very bottom of the pile, as if it had been deliberately hidden away, the Hearth Witch pulled a large bolt of fabric.

It was a lush, thick-piled sateen finish velvet embossed with lovely swirls and curliques...of the most hideously bright almost neon shade of nacarat.

“This was delivered this morning. The note said it’s a gift.” She brandished the bolt at the Black Widow. “What am I supposed to do with fifty yards of this? It’s too bright to take a redye. This color would bleed through even a coal black dye.”

Jacinthe paused, pursed her lips, considered. “Actually...if I can get the black deep enough that the orange only comes through in a low-light effect...it could make a striking undergown for a ballgown…”

Eyes closed she stroked the fabric, seeing the design in her mind’s eye. “The trick would be getting it to take the dye properly.”

She looked at Raluca. “I don’t suppose you know anyone who will need a ballgown this winter? This is far too heavy a fabric to wear now except in the mountains maybe.” She walked over to the dummy with the long tailed tuxedo.

“If the woman’s Escort were to wear something like this with the dyed velvet lining the cuffs, lapels and tails they would make quite the arresting couple.”

Unless the Black Widow wanted to take the fabric from her and examine it more closely, Jacinthe laid it back on the pile. She fidgeted, uncharacteristically nervous for when it was just the two of them.

“Do - do you think I might maybe get away for a couple of days after, well after?” The Hearth Witch blurted the question abruptly, but didn’t clarify. She was fairly certain Raluca would understand what she meant.
