set a date and keep it

Artemisia had gone alone to see the priestess, though Minerva arranged the meeting. She felt confident in her ability to handle the meeting by herself - a far cry from how she would have felt about it a year ago. The Artemisia who had first entered into service with her sister had been a shrinking violet, scared of all aspects of Blood society, but experience had changed her. She’d had plenty of dealings with Priestesses now. She’d read all about the ritual that stood between her and her full power.

After her night with Artur Woden, nothing could scare Artemisia anymore. At least nothing she could think of. He’d guarded her against breaking, and he’d lit a fire under her - she was going to take what was hers and she was going to make him accept their bond, whether he wanted to at first or not. After all, he was hers. He needed her.

Mercianna had called her in for their appointment only moments ago, and Artemisia had already dispensed with the introductions Minerva had instructed her on, the delicate dance of protocol dictated by their respective ranks, castes, and strengths. Now, she was settling into her seat across the desk from the Priestess. Minerva had spoken highly of Mercianna, and Artemisia wanted very badly to make a good impression.

“As I as saying,” she said, smoothing her skirt out over her crossed knees, “Thank you so much for meeting with me, Lady Arcos.” She flashed what she thought was likely to be a winning smile, sweet and optimistic and reaching her eyes.

“My sister Lady Tailor would like me to complete my Offering before summer’s end,” she went on. “She’s make nothing but positive remarks about your skill and grace as a Priestess. But I think I’m more… superstitious than she is.”

Minerva, after all, had not seemed particularly concerned with the exact scheduling of the thing - only that it happened before all the gifting to be done in the autumn. And she hadn’t said anything one way or the other about Artemisia’s faith in omens. “I think I’d feel best if it was done on a fortuitous day, as such things are calculated. It does feel like the odds are against me from the outset given my birthright…”

Mercianna was surprised (and a little flattered) when Lady Tailor reached out to arrange a meeting for her young Ward. While Mercianna did not know Artemisia Xenopol personally, this meet was a good chance to learn about the young Queen and gauge the woman she would grow to become. Blood Society was a pit of vipers, not unlike the ones in Raej, and the right connections made in youth could take someone very far in later years. It was a shame that so many people missed (or blatantly ignored) that lesson. Mercianna hoped to impart that to Stana before the girl reached her maturity.

She’d replied and set the date, and Mercianna had treated the young Queen like she already ruled a Court. She was pure of blood, and pretty besides, making Mercianna more apt to listening to her than other Queens that she could name. They settled on either side of Mercianna’s desk and the Priestess had clasped her hands before her on the desk so that she could focus her full attention on the White Jeweled Queen.

The honor is all mine, Lady Xenopol. I appreciate your reaching out to me for assistance in such an important time.” Mercianna said, smiling in return. Mercianna couldn’t help herself. Lady Xenopol’s charm was infectious. Her youth reminded her of Renata, and Mercianna filed away the idea of introducing the two women. She nodded at the Queen’s desire to complete her Offering before the end of summer and smiled a little brighter at the compliment to her skills. Mercianna wasn’t immune to having her ego stroked and it made her like Artemisia Xenopol a bit more.

The end of summer is an important time, just before gifting would occur in Autumn. Reaching the fullness of your power and having that time to explore it is so important. I performed my Offering on the night of a full moon. It was like having Mother Night speaking directly into my soul through the Darkness. We can certainly find another time if you wish, but I am partial to those nights myself.” Mercianna said gently.

Her final words, however, made Mercianna study the Queen more intently.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by ‘the odds being against you’ because of your Birthright?” Mercianna asked gently. Any hesitations or uncertainties prior to the ceremony could prevent her from focusing on her descent into the Abyss. Mercianna knew that this was not just a chance to endear herself to an up-and-coming Queen, but also to Lady Tailor. As such, she would make every effort to help Lady Xenopol reach her full power.

She would do no less for Stana, someday in the future. Now was the time to show everyone what she was capable of.

Artemisia nodded. There were only so many full moons left between now and the end of the summer, so that narrowed the date down considerably. She didn’t dream of going against the Priestess’s recommendation - if Mercianna preferred the night of the full moon, then that was it would be. (It satisfied Artemisia’s superstitious streak to take her advice.)

If only, Artemisia thought, the same care had been taken with her Birthright. If she’d been properly prepared for it, then perhaps she would not have been cast so light as she was. She had never been self-conscious about her White before coming to Sevastopol, but now she knew enough about the ways and rituals of the Blood to see how she’d been harmed. If she’d been educated, if it had not been delayed and then rushed… but it was, she knew, all a side effect of how she’d been kept safe.

Dena Nehele had been a terrible place for Queens, but she wanted to believe it was better now.

She wondered, briefly, if she’d said something wrong about her Birthright. Self-consciously, Artemisia raised a hand to her collarbone and twisted the little piece of her White on its chain. (She was growing more tolerant of Minerva’s desire to have it re-set. Certainly it was too plain for how a Queen should wear her Jewel.)

“I mean.” Artemisia replied, “Because I’m so light to begin with, so I feel a lot of pressure to… get it right, I suppose.”

Though her sister had not placed any obvious pressure upon her, she hadn’t needed to. Artemisia was tough enough on herself. She knew that a Rose was a respectable Jewel of Rank. Lighter, and her utility to the people of Caecian would be lessened.

“My Birthright was rushed,” she blurted. “And late. Because of how I was being hidden.” Surely Mercianna would understand, she thought - even Riley, the territory Queen, had been hidden as a child. It was a territory tradition, hand-in-hand with Queen killing. “And I’m just not sure I feel confident with the whole… process. Of going into the Darkness and pulling up a Jewel.”

Even her omens couldn’t fully dispel her fears. She was no Black Widow, for all she’d been reading about the craft - who could say if her omens were even real?

“So I want to pick the right date,” Artemisia added. “And do any other preparations you recommend. To sort of… play the odds.”

Mercianna listened while Lady Xenopol clarified her remarks. Mercianna had the good fortune not to be a Queen in Dena Nehele. Priestesses were a deeply respected caste whose worried carried as much (if not more) weight than a Queen’s. She’d had her own mother to lead her through her Birthright Ceremony, at least, so Mercianna had never felt afraid or worried at the prospect of the jewels she would wear. Mother Night would assign her what she needed, nothing more and nothing less. That certainty was a comfort in troubled times, especially after her mother’s passing her father’s slow descent into heartbreak.

Lady Xenopol, no matter the jewel your receive, it will be right for you. That’s what matters, isn’t it?” Mercianna said, her voice warm.

I’m sorry for what you endured in your youth. Dena Nehele’s treatment of Queens, Healers, and Priestesses has been nothing short of reprehensible. But I’m sure that you’ve grown up hearing all sorts of advice superstition on when you should seek your Offering and how to approach Mother Night and the Darkness.” Mercianna said.

I would be happy to answer any questions that you have if it will set your mind at ease. It’s easy to get caught up in what other people think or what they might want from you. It’s even easier to put undue pressure upon yourself. But it is better for us when we keep our hearts and minds open to the Darkness and listen to what it’s trying to show us and tell us.” Mercianna said.

It’s difficult and easy to get caught up in timing and feeling like you have to get it right. Just know that you will get it right, no matter what you do.” she said gently. She hoped that she could at least offer the younger woman some peace of mind to start. If she went into her Offering like this, she wouldn’t be able to get out of her own head enough to reach into the Darkness. She got the sense that Artemisia Xenopol was an exacting young woman who demanded the absolute best from herself before asking it of anyone else. Mercianna respected that.

As I said, I am partial to the full moon, but we can accomodate any night that you wish to make your Offering. Will you have friends or family or bonded attending the ceremony? Some people find it comforting to know that people they care for are waiting for them. Others don’t want the pressure. I’d just like to make sure that I prepare for nervous relatives and their questions, where I can.” Mercianna said, favoring the young woman with another gentle smile.

Artemisia could tell that Lady Arcos was trying to be reassuring, so she nodded, although the little voice in her chest said that there was so much more she could do with a Rose than with a Yellow or a Tiger Eye. She had been robbed - or something like it - at her birthright. If she could never reach her original potential, then the least she could do was take as much of what was owed to her as she could.

Now, where had that thought come from?

She brushed the thought aside. “Not so much advice as you might expect,” she admitted, wondering if it was proper to tell the woman across from her that she’d been raised Landen. Probably not. “I’ve only really started to worry about it as it’s gotten closer…”

That seemed reasonable. After all, she hadn’t had a proper job that relied on her caste until joining Minerva’s court a year ago. Why should Artemisia have worried about her strength before then? But now, with all of Caecian counting on her strength... The outcome of this ritual would affect so many more people than just herself. She’d seen the numbers on the difference a Rose could make for crop yields versus a Yellow.

It did matter, no matter how much anyone tried to tell her it didn’t, and she couldn’t just put that out of mind. And since the Priestess was right that it would only undermine her to worry about what the outcome would be, then her only choice was to treat it like a foregone conclusion. There was no point in second-guessing her omens. They were omens.

Artemisia straightened out her spine, sitting up straight.

It would be a Rose. She would not doubt herself again.

“My siblings, probably,” she said, though she had not raised the question with Jeremiah yet. She knew Minerva would want to be there - she was the one investing so much in the outcome, after all. She’d want to make certain it was done properly. “Maybe one bonded.” Raluca would probably come if Artemisia asked.

She thought briefly of Artur Woden and made a face. Now, there was a bonded who likely wouldn’t. Not that Artemisia intended to ask. She’d made up her mind to win his favor, but she was still unclear as to how to do that. Forcing the issue likely wouldn’t help…

“Not this full moon,” she said, “But perhaps the next one? Are any of the moons in summer better than others?”
