i need a change 'cause i'm tired of feeling drained

It did not get any easier, visiting her father. It was harder, in fact, when her aunt was with her. The first time that Irina had come to see her brother--not so many days after the Decimation--Cristina had managed to not cry even though her heart ached. There was no change in him, no sign that he would ever wake again. His body continued on, his Self lost somewhere that not even her Queen could find.

(Prince Mercer had gone looking too, she knew, but that meant little to her. She was still not happy with him, though at this point she was mostly clinging to her own petty feelings than him having done anything offensive.)

Cristina had not cried again about her father, not since Arkadie had comforted her, and she would not do so again. Not if she could help it. The problem was that she realized she had gone through mourning for him. Accepted him as dead even though he still breathed. She did not think lived because he did not, for all that his heart beat within his chest. Cristina kept tabs on all the craft and more than helped his body continue to function.

It was becoming harder for Irina, she knew that much. There was nothing that could help her father keep his muscle definition, nothing that would keep his body as it had been when the Decimation hit. She did not want to think about it, did not want to let her father's specter linger over the rest of the time she had today with her aunt (her mother).

So once they arrived back at the manor, drinks being brought, Cristina settled next to Irina and spoke up. "I know I've not talked much about it," the Healer spoke softly, "but I've decided upon what I will be doing once my apprenticeship with Lady Tailor is over come the end of spring."

Every day felt like the eve of a funeral. Irina visited her brother, not because she hoped that his condition would improve, no, all of that was dashed after speaking with the Court Healer, but because she needed to see him. It didn’t feel as though she could say goodbye, nor could she sit and silently pray for him to open his eyes.

She knew those prayers would not be answered, and for a Priestess, that was a devastating realization.

Only once had she tried to commune with him, finding herself wading in the dark waters alone. No matter how she called his name, the silence was her only response.

Cristina was her focus now, more than she had ever been before. When she had lost her mother and Valeiru his wife, Irina had been there to comfort them. From that day forward, she swore to protect her niece from harm and give her the best life one could possibly live. Valeiru was widowed and this gave him time to sort through his pain without worrying that his daughter was being neglected. With him gone, she knew Cristina would try and be strong for everyone involved. She would see the pain in her adoptive mother’s eyes and want nothing more than to soothe her.  Irina cherished Cristina’s nature as much as she wished she would allow herself to be vulnerable.  Every day they visited Valeriu together, was another day they would return to the manor with an empty feeling in their stomach and a perpetual sense that someone they loved was missing.

Irina knew that time would take its toll on her brother’s body. He would wither away.  But she was unwilling to speak of it, or even consider those thoughts for now.

Slender fingers idly brushed the young woman’s dark hair away from her neck once she settled with tender motherly ministrations. Distracted the entire way back from the manor, she blinked and looked over to her niece once she began to speak, giving her the full attention she deserved. “Have you? That is wonderful Cris. What will you do?” she asked. “I didn't want to push, considering all that's occurred. Your future is filled with opportunities, I want to make sure that you choose the one that best suits what you want out of life.  Will you also be retaining your escort as well?” Smiling she tilted her head to study her.

There had been a burn in the back of her throat the day she had waited for her aunt to speak with the Court Healer about her father. Cristina ignored it, of course, and reminded herself that she was not truly considered having come into her power until her Offering was in her grasp.

It would be the Sapphire. It was what her father hoped for her to attain and so no less would be accepted. She did not speak of it much, though she had whispered it quietly to Artemisia in the quiet of the night when they had been pressed together close in bed. No one else knew that secret, how much she wanted the Sapphire.

Not even her Aunt Irina, though Cristina suspected she knew all the same. It was not as if the Healer was shy about always wanting to reach her full potential, to achieve everything that was possible and more.

She leaned into the touch, head finding its way to her aunt's shoulder and resting there. The months had not been easy on her, though she hid the stress well. It was only in private that anyone would ever know she had been weighed down by everything that had happened. (Including Lady Rilandra Vlas's pregnancy; the sibling her father would likely never meet.)

"... well," said Cristina in that tone of voice that Irina always knew she was about to say something she worried would be upsetting or offensive or disapproved of, "I had an offer made contingent on my Virgin Night and subsequent Offering." She kept her head against Irina's shoulder, not looking up as she spoke. "Regardless of what Mother Night blesses me with," read: Sapphire, "I will be the Court Healer of the Aechia Province."

The mention of her Escort was really what had her not lifting her head up. There were only two people that could make her feel guilty about the subject: her mother aunt and her Queen. "Since Florin," who had died in the Decimation; had been the first thing Cristina had seen coming out of her apartment in Caecian seat, "I have only had what has been provided for me as I work within the Courts." Which that was if she accepted it and didn't run them off. (She didn't anymore, though the reasons behind that had more to do with not wanting to make certain people worry.)

"The Conservatory is training proper Healer Escorts," added Cristina, "and from their first graduating class, I think there is one that I would like to work with me." The direction this was going was so much better than discussing who and when was her Virgin Night.

Cristina had always strived for excellence and her father had expected that much from her. Irina’s guidance was drawn on faith, in Mother Night’s blessings and in Cristina’s potential and ability to make the right choices.  She had yet to be disappointed.  Irina knew, despite how little her niece spoke of her Offering that she had aspirations, especially now with her father gone, she would want to make him proud. Her little flower couldn’t imagine just how much she had succeeded in doing just that.   The day of her Offering would be glorious, Irina would guide her into the depths, the communion would be everything they wanted and Cristina would emerge, blessed and reborn. No matter what she came away with it would be exactly what she needed in her eyes.

Smiling into her hair, Irina pressed her lips to the crest of the young woman’s brow and rested her cheek there. A matronly arm wrapped around her small waist as she held her close. As a child, she would often hold her like this. The recent events with her father brought those old memories back to the surface.

“Contingent? That is another matter we need to discuss. Your special night is around the corner and I want to make sure you are prepared.” The Virgin Night was a rite of passage, but Irina would be damned if it wasn’t done right. Whoever she picked would need to be vetted and she would hear no argument that Zamfir and herself would speak to the male at length about their expectations.  It was now their duty to assure Cristina’s safety, especially when she was so vulnerable.  The young Healer would have her pick, she was beautiful and sharp as a whip.

A wide smile blossomed on Irina’s face the moment the court position was mentioned. Her hand tightened slightly in a warm press to her side.  “Cristina, that is wonderful news! Why don’t you sound as excited as Id think you’d be? Would you be staying within the court or will you desire accommodations outside? I'm sure that Zamfir wouldn't mind looking up some available properties so that we could visit often. “ Pulling back but not fully releasing her she reached for the young woman’s face in hopes of reading her expression.  So much had been lost in the Decimation, her father among the highest and even her escort. Irina could not imagine how close they had become.

“Well tell me about him? His family? Qualifications?”  She asked, clearly invested. It had taken a lot of time and research to locate Florian. Very few met Irina’s high standards.
