Winter 193 - Bidea, Maseo’s Office at the Palace

Maseo sat at his desk, writing out the contract as he waited for his next meeting to arrive. He cursed under his breath as he considered the next situation. His emissary was compromised due to newly discovered Queen bond, making the male unstable and unfit for the execution of this sensitive matter. Francois was addressing another sensitive issue on his behalf, leaving Maseo with few viable options. He could postpone the matter entirely, though it would leave his monetary reserves injured for a time due to his current business ventures. The idea was unpalatable, especially since his role in the Second Circle required him to maintain a certain station in order to draw supporters for his aims. He had a small collective available now, but he couldn’t count on them to assist him in full.

He was out of good options and in need of a revenue stream that allow him to pursue his next venture. The location he needed was selected; he needed only to convince the seller to accept his offer. From there, it was merely a matter of getting the Court to review and approve his desires. Slow and steady work would win the race and bring him the success he desired. But he still needed seed money to get all of this going.

Maseo finished the letter and then whispered the incantation for the cooling spell to dry the ink. Satisfied, he considered what was necessary to ensure that his message would be read and accepted. He had one more person that he could tap and he sent a thread to Tairi, asking that she go to the inn and contact the woman immediately. Maseo sat up straighter in his seat. This would work. He would make this work. Despite the inability of some males to accept their bonded Queen and move forward, Lord Shingetsu would not see his plans hindered.

He added a line at the bottom of the letter, one that would offer proof of its authenticity to the reader. He dried that last line with Craft as his assistant rapped softly on the door to the office.

Enter.” Maseo said.  He’d heard positive things about the male entering his office and had seen a glimpse of his prowess. In fact, his recommendation came from a source that Maseo had reason to like.

He hoped that Prince Silvarin lived up to his expectations.

Gabriel needed to work. Elenor had just left the safety of Dena Nehele for Askavi, taking Kia with her. It was somewhere he could not follow, would not follow, but not just because Gabe would be slaughtered if he ever set a toe across the border. No, it was that Elenor, for all that they were Bonded and he had searched two hundred years to find her, was bad for him. She made Gabriel go back to the monster he fought so hard not to be and it wasn't even her fault.

Trouble followed that girl like a dark shroud, and every time Gabe touched it, people died.

He'd had enough.

Yet even though he had told her and even though his reasons were valid, it still hurt to walk away from one of his Queens... and it hurt to walk away from Kia too. No, hurt wasn't right, it fucking ached and he wasn't ready to explore why that was yet.

So work.

His funds were low at the moment after six months in Pruul and his contacts in Dena Nehele didn't have much on offer considering they had not been informed that Gabriel would be there until he arrived. So when the offer came from one Maseo no Shingetsu he had jumped on it. A quick shower and an attempt to tame his messy hair, and Gabriel was at the door of the Warlord's offices right on time.

He was escorted in to a neat and well-appointed room, where a Tacean man sat behind a large desk. Gabriel bowed his head, prospective employee to employer, not Gray to Opal, and said, "thank you for reaching out. What can I do for you, Lord Shingetsu?"

Hopefully, this would be legitimate business, because Gabriel really did need the money. Not that he hadn't assisted in grift by ferrying illicit goods from place to place in the past because, well, it paid better, but with the mood that was riding him these days, he'd much prefer candor.

Maseo pushed aside the small stack of papers on his desk and set aside his pen to regard the Warlord Prince who walked through his door. Gabriel Silvarin was known to be a fast, reliable courier, hence Maseo’s reason for hiring him. A Gray Warlord Prince was a wave of destruction that few people would tempt out of fear for their lives. Maseo could use someone like that on his payroll, someone to add the weight of force to his words. Before the Decimation, Maseo thought it would be easy to find twenty Dark Jeweled men in need of work who didn’t belong to the Guilds.

That wasn’t the case now.

He rose from his chair to greet Prince Silvarin. Protocol was important when dealing with Warlord Princes and, no matter their political positions, Maseo knew that was still a Warlord. He preferred to keep his head attached to his body, so showing this Warlord Prince the courtesy due his caste cost nothing and would at least buy him another moment of breathing.

I am told that you’re very good at what you do, Prince Silvarin. You are well-spoken of by a mutual acquaintance of ours so the choice was easy.” he said.

Straight to business, though. I like it. Would you care to sit?” Maseo asked, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk. Whether or not Gabriel took it, Maseo would sit down and relax before regarding the other man calmly.

It’s a simple delivery matter. I have a cousin in Tacea whom I’d like to reach out to, but she’s not expecting me to do so. I’d like to pay you to enter her Court, as she is a Queen, and deliver a message for me. Now, as is true anywhere, a Gray Warlord Prince showing up on one’s doorstep without warning is a terrifying prospect. Your reception would be frosty, at minimum. You’re also a male, which is an issue among my people...and an outsider.” Maseo said. While he saw hints of long-lived ancestry in Prince Silvarin, Maseo wouldn’t assume he understood Tacea. Few did and few still respected what they did know. The Decimation was proof of that.

You’ll enter the Court of Lady Sakura no Shingetsu, deliver my message, and wait for her response. She will likely give you a parcel to bring back to me. Do that and the contract is fulfilled, along with a shining recommendation to everyone I know regarding your services.” Maseo said.

What do you say? It’s not the most exciting contract in the world, but some things really are simple.
