Curls that won’t quit, freckles everywhere, and the goofiest smile around. Also he might actually be bottled sunshine. No one can disprove it. Flecks of gold in his green eyes that hint at the Long-Lived blood in his veins.

Personality

Personality:
Bright, chipper, and easily excitable, Gloom wants nothing more than to make those around him happy. There's nothing that makes him feel as good as when he helps put a smile on someone's face. Having grown up on the streets, Gloom knows that there's often a nigh-on insurmountable amount of sadness and more within the world. It's because of this, because he's been down low and in some of the worst places imaginable, that he often goes out of his way to help out others.

If it is in his power, if he can do something to change someone's situation for the better, then he's likely to go for it. Which can--and has--gotten him into trouble because he doesn't always double-check that the person wants his help. The only upside is that he genuinely means well and has something of an infectious cheer to him that helps smooth things over.

Gloom might seem as if he's easily distracted or unable to focus on one thing but that's far from the case. The real issue is that he doesn't know how to slow down. With the depth of his jewels, he doesn't really have to. Someone might say that it's the Warlord caste showing itself. That Gloom's need to do all that he can, to be there for people, is part of the inherent need of his caste to look after and protect. Gloom would say that that's bullshit and everyone should be willing to do all that they can for their fellows.

It's this line of thinking that can get him in trouble. Gloom believes in the inherent good of people despite the fact that he's seen some of the worst. Even when someone has burned him, he will make an effort to assist them. That's not to say he will keep doing so. Gloom operates on a three-strikes system. If someone manages to blow all three strikes they basically cease to exist as far as he's concerned.

In that regard, people can discover the vengeful and spiteful side of Gloom. He will hold a grudge forever once someone's proven that they can't be trusted. Worse: if it won't get him into trouble--and sometimes not caring that it will--he's likely to go out of his way to make sure others know just how much that person is not nice at all. It is in his emotions, his never stopping, that one can often see the spark of the Sapphire he calls his. He feels and feels keenly, just as much as he wants to share his happiness with others. There is far too much sadness in the world and if it wouldn't drain his jewels to dust he would use them to do away with as much as he can.

Sadly running full-speed all the time can lead to a spectacular crash and burn if something manages to bring him to a halt. Gloom doesn't want to admit it but he can fall into some serious funks that are not easily escaped. When he slips into one of his down spirals there is nothing that can be done to bring him out of it. The only thing that helps is distracting or giving him something else to focus on outside of himself.

Ultimately, Gloom is an impish young man who means well and wants to find that place that he truly belongs. He wants to be with people who don't get on to him when he pulls a good-natured prank or get mad at him because he's always looking on the bright side. There's nothing wrong with that, okay?

Likes:
  • Learning - Gloom embodies the statement jack of all trades, master of none more than anything else. This is because he finds new things to be an absolute delight, frequently finding contemporary and interesting things for him to learn. While many Jacks do have one thing they do especially well, Gloom is well known for putting his wide and varied knowledge to use to get him out of any situation. Point is: he is never going to stop learning! There’s always something else waiting for him to figure it out.
  • Good-Natured Pranks - A smile found in your shadow, a button missing from your jacket, a gift hidden under something that briefly spooks ... These are all friendly, good-natured pranks that don’t hurt anyone. Gloom enjoys these sorts of pranks, especially when they result in a smile on someone’s face and makes their day a little bit brighter. Not that it doesn’t mean sometimes he ends up in trouble for his mischief but mostly he means well. Mostly.
  • People - People are the best! Which, to be fair, Gloom thinks a lot of things are the best. The difference is that he absolutely enjoys being around others, wanting to help, socialize, and otherwise basically make himself a nuisance without truly meaning to. He genuinely believes in people, wants to be around them, and does everything he can to help out his fellow person.
Dislikes:
  • The Invisible - There are those that slip through the cracks of life, the ones that Gloom will classify as the invisible. Once upon a time, he was one too until he made a life for himself. It’s for this reason that he finds himself uncomfortable that such people exist. It's not the people that he dislikes but rather the fact that there is a class of people that are ignored. Most turn a blind eye to not only their suffering but their existence which unsettles Gloom greatly to the point that he will often put more time and effort into helping them when he can.
  • Being Serious - Nope. Pass. There is already too much seriousness in the world and it often annoys Gloom to no end. Nothing good ever comes from someone who is serious all the time. To that end, he does his best to never be serious. Even if there are moments where he needs to be, he always has some quip or otherwise to lighten up the mood and make people smile. Or he just hides behind the overly serious person and starts making funny faces until they notice. There are reasons why some don’t like him.
  • Society’s Perceptions - Gloom does not understand why he is looked down upon because he is an orphan that was raised on the streets of Bidea. Having grown up this way, he views it as an advantage. Sure life was more than hard back then but without the bad times, he couldn’t appreciate the good ones! It’s just really frustrating that people suddenly start looking at him as if he had fuzzy ears or an unsightly mole or won't work with or respect him all because he wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Which sounds really uncomfortable to Gloom, if he’s honest (and he does his best to be).
Fears:
  • Being Hated - His energy level is high, he pretty much cannot sit still, and he is constantly getting himself into something. He knows that there are more than a few people that simply put up with him rather than liking him in any capacity and that’s fine, those feelings are valid. What he doesn’t want is to be hated. Gloom adores people, loves being social, and the idea that people hate him or otherwise would turn him away makes him sometimes pull himself back for fear that he’ll lose friends. There is only so much that people will put up with, after all.
  • Large Open Spaces - Look. If Gloom was meant to be out in the open then he’d be out in the open. He prefers to keep to the sides, to the crowds, to the shadows ... Whatever it is, as long as it’s not a large empty space, he’ll take it. He can pinpoint most bad things that have happened to him as having happened when he was out in the open, unable to find cover or similar to protect himself. For that reason, any time he gets dragged out into something like an empty market square, Gloom freezes up like a spooked animal unable to do anything until he gets his fear under control.
  • Never Belonging - That’s all he wants, really, to belong. The problem is that Gloom hasn’t found the place that he feels like he truly belongs to. Sure, he’s a member of the Jacks and he’s gotten himself a slot at the Conservatory to be a Healer’s Escort but even then he doesn’t feel like these are the places that he belongs. Gloom fears he’s never going to find that place. That he’s never going to find the person (or people) to which he belongs and is meant to be around. He thinks about it often, the cause of some of his more noteworthy funks.
Craft Strengths:
  • Manipulate Shadows - Gloom loves shadows. His skill with manipulating shadows is truly enviable. He knows how to not only stretch naturally occurring shadows impressively far but he can also darken them considerably. His favorite thing to do? Mess with people’s shadows! Not that he’s supposed to without permission but sometimes he can’t help but put a smile in someone’s shadow when they’re frowning all the time.
  • Psychic Monitoring - The fact is that if you want to survive on the streets and you’re of the Blood, you get good at monitoring. Perhaps being seen as paranoia, Gloom constantly keeps an eye on the psychic pulse of those around him. He has learned well how to break down the information he gathers, able to pinpoint himself on one individual or many depending on what he needs. It’s become particularly useful as he’s working to be a Healer’s Escort, able to monitor their condition along with the patient with ease.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Calming Rage - An incident when he was far younger saw him trying to instinctively use it to ease the anger of another. What happened instead was that the person turned on him, lashing out and giving Gloom what he still considers the worst beating of his life. Ever since he has been completely incapable of this innate craft and doesn’t even think about using it.
  • Emotion Manipulation - It would be incredibly useful, especially as he's going to be a Healer's Escort (and more beyond that), but much like his inability to instinctively use Calming Rage, Gloom cannot use craft to manipulate the emotions of others. He won't even try anymore because the last time he attempted it the experience was horrifying for all those involved. Literally and figuratively.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Unknown Long-Lived Blood Female
Father: Danton Keel (61 - b. 133AP) - Prince - Summer Sky to Opal

History:
Sullivan can’t tell you anything about his mother. Not a thing at all. He can tell you all about the Priestesses at the altar he ultimately ended up as an orphan. (When it comes to his father ... That is something that comes later.) It was there that he ended up with the name Sullivan, though he never did like answering to it. As he never manifested a higher caste as a babe, the Priestesses weren’t even certain that he was going to have a jewel to call his own. Yet they took him through his Birthright Ceremony all the same, as they did any orphan child within their care.

It was within himself, touching upon the Darkness, that Sullivan felt the first inklings of something greater than himself. Cradling his cut Opal in hand, he wrote his name down in particularly sloppy handwriting. For the first time in his life, he had a name that was all his own: Gloom. No one understood why this child who was all sunshine and happiness would pick such a dreary name. Gloom never felt the need to explain either. Not that he expected anyone would understand that he felt a kinship to the shadows and the dark that he never felt otherwise. In those places, he felt most safe and nothing has ever changed that.

Once Gloom had his Birthright, the Priestesses could not keep him under wraps. With the number of orphans and more that had to be dealt with, they did not try too hard either. It was fine for Gloom because he liked being on the streets. He enjoyed being able to see as much as he did, experience all that Dena Nehele had to offer first hand, and not how to listen to anyone. It did not stop him, however, from poking his head back in at the altar every now and then. Gloom could never not help, not when he had been helped, and so he became a rather common sight to many Priestesses and the altars they maintained.

His youth was ultimately unremarkable save for one incident. Gloom ended up biting off more than he could chew one day when he was trying to help out a young witch who had garnered the attention and anger of a Prince. The young Warlord tried to use Calming Rage--instinctively so--but found that it backfired spectacularly. On the upside, it had enabled the young witch to get away (who never did thank Gloom) but it had left Gloom as the focus of the Prince’s ire. Not properly trained, not even much of a scrapper yet, the Prince dragged Gloom towards an alley.

Gloom does not remember much of the encounter as the pain eventually clouded his perception. What he does remember is who saved him, though he cannot say why his savior even did so. Either way, the Prince was threatened within an inch of his life and sent scrambling. It was then his rescuer turned to him, Gloom trying to hide himself in the lengthening shadows fearing more pain. With a scoff, a hand snapped forward regardless of the dark and closed around Gloom’s arm.

That moment of touch changed everything.

Or ... well, actually it didn’t change much at all but Gloom did find that he had a father. Whatever had encouraged Danton Keel to help out some street urchin, Gloom couldn’t say, but he was grateful. Moreso when the Prince ensured that he survived his injuries by having them tended. Once he was healed, having realized that Gloom was a touch too panglossian, Keels tossed the young Warlord in the direction of the Jacks. (It is worth noting that no one is aware of who his father is, as Gloom keeps that a tightly guarded secret.)

It’s with the Jacks that Gloom really made a name for himself, ultimately ending up known as Sunshine. He even made it to full member before he got his Offering and it was not because he drove his mentor absolutely crazy. (NO ONE CAN PROVE IT OKAY.) No, Gloom made it to full member by merit. To this day he loves telling as much as he can about the contract that got him promoted to full member, as it involved a daring rescue as well as a fight on a rooftop in a thunderstorm! The sad part is he cannot really divulge the specifics of who was involved but if you knew you’d never believe him.

From there Gloom kept taking on more and more contracts--making himself the most helpful nuisance ever--but it didn’t really hit the spot for him. It was only after his Offering, which saw him with a cut Sapphire, that he finally found something that he thought might fit for him: the Conservatory. The only problem, of course, was the cost, as Tiger reminded him over and over again every time he came by. That was eventually sorted as Ti--Lady Grigorie pointed him towards Bear.

As of now, he takes the occasional contract but mostly he’s been working his butt off to become a Healer’s Escort.

Character in Play:
”So, Lady Grigorie said I should come talk to you,” said Gloom, poking his way around the office of the Steward of Dena Nehele. Part of him really, really wanted to ask about the Black Widow shadow craft but he suspected that Bear would be about as receptive to that as most Black Widows were. He was still lucky that he was allowed anywhere near the Hourglass Coven building as it was.

“I’m sure she did,” said Bear dryly, moving around his desk and plucking the item from Gloom’s hands that he had picked up. It was set back down on a shelf exactly as it had been. “So you want to train as a Healer’s Escort.”

The Warlord squinted up at Bear. Mostly because he was pretty sure that was a statement and not a question. Black Widow Warlord Princes were weird. He continued staring for a half-beat longer before he simply shrugged. “Yep, I do! ... but, you know, I kind of need--”

“It can be taken care of, Sunshine,” interrupted Bear, “if you can promise me that you will stop touching everything in my office and leave this building without bothering anyone else.”

Gloom squinted again. “... weren’t you worse than me? As in you terrorized the aristocracy in Tulzbruja by--”

Today, Sunshine. Today you will not bother anyone else when you leave.” Bear paused before he added. “The stipulation about my office stands until the sun burns out, however. Put that down.” Gloom promptly put down the very ornate looking book with a guilty look. “If you can do that and do as Lady Grigorie tells you, then I can extend my assistance to you so that you can train at the Conservatory.”

Quiet reigned for all of five seconds before Gloom grinned widely. “Sure! I can swear on that!” Then the Warlord spit on his palm, holding it out to finalize the agreement in the way of street urchins.

Bear sighed.
