Appearance

Play By: Katherine Langford
Distinguishing Features:

Dark hair, blue eyes. Always has a hair tie on hand for the quick, messy ponytails when necessary.

Personality

Personality:

Stela Petrescu shifts between personalities, masks she uses to protect herself from the people around her on a constant basis.

As a Priestess, Stela strives to tend the souls of the people around her. Whether it’s offering a friendly ear, providing words of encouragement, or mastering ceremonial duties, it’s her duty to bring Mother Night’s grace to others. She enjoys the rituals and mysteries of the Caste more than she thought. Being a Priestess rivals her love of music, making her feel as though she's serving Dena Nehele rather than just benefiting from it. She loves her parents, but recognizes that they rarely helped anyone but themselves. Serving others is her way of proving (to herself) that she didn't inherit their weakness.

As Arbiter, Shaos Journeywoman, Stela culls information from the people around her to determine the power players of the Territory and how she can leverage their vices against them when the time comes. She hates talking about herself but can relate to the experiences of others when necessary. She sticks to short, non-revealing answers when asked personal questions, then turns the questions back on her companions, using her keen memory to capture what she's told so that she can examine it for later use.

Her roles as Priestess and Shaos are in constant conflict. She's been a Priestess for a short time but the Caste has already marked her soul. It's restored her faith in the world and the idea that Mother Night will place her where she's needed. Histories and ancient texts intrigue her as much as (maybe more than) shipping manifests and coded missives. Sometimes she wishes that she'd trained as a Priestess before becoming Shaos, but that's a fool's dream. That doesn't make it easier to suspend her desire to help others grow closer to Mother Night when she should be stealing their secrets for the benefit of the Guild.

This makes deeper human interactions terrifying for her. She lives in a world where she lies to everyone around her when she'd rather grant them truth. People can't handle the truths of Dena Nehele, though, no matter how strong they believe themselves. Stela is extremely lonely, kept company by the secrets in her head and the rage in in her heart. Emotion ruins everything, leading her to preference for logic and facts. Emotions lead to sloppy work, making it doubly important that she learn to suborn her growing empathy for others so that she doesn't make careless mistakes. She can't afford mistakes if she's going reach her goals.

Stela's a conflicted young woman holding on to a grudge that may destroy her. She prays daily, seeking Mother Night’s will and the strength to serve the Shaos, the Conclave, and Dena Nehele to the best of her ability. She prays for the souls of her mother and father, two flawed people who deserved more than life handed them. She prays because it comforts her and settles her internal conflict for a time.

And she prays for the strength and skill to someday put Duncan Petrescu in the dirt, where he belongs.

Likes:

  • 1. Rituals & Ceremony: Stela enjoys the rituals and ceremonies of the Priestess Caste. Knowing that the Birthright Ceremony that she performs has changed little in the past century makes her feel like a guardian of knowledge and tradition. This grants her a deep sense of pride in the caste and herself.

  • 2. Bidea: Stela loves the big city, but Bidea is the heart and pulse of the Territory. The amount of commerce and industry that takes place just within the city limits is staggering. Add to that the number of intrigues and backroom deals that happen inside and outside of the Territory Court and there’s no place where Stela would rather be as a Shaos and a Priestess.

  • 3. Violin: Stela bonded with her father over their shared love of the violin, with him acting as her tutor during his sober times. Playing makes her feel closer to her father, who squandered his own talent with drugs and irresponsible living. Stela has developed her skill through a grueling work ethic that allows her to play at the concert level. She practices thrice-daily in order to sharpen her skills, balancing it against her responsibility as a Shaos.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Duncan: Uncle Duncan took her in after he killed her father, but no amount of kindness from the older man has dulled her hatred of him. He took away her father and he’s never paid for it. He’s the reason she’s not dead in the street or worse, and it galls her to be gracious to him when he’s the cause of her misery. His death will happen and it will happen at her hand. She just needs to put all of the pieces in place.

  • 2. Drugs: Her parents each had a laundry list of character deficiencies, but their inability to wean themselves away from drugs and the people who provided them was their greatest downfall. More than once, Stela found herself cleaning up after her parents sickness or, in her mother’s case, finding her unresponsive after a night of binge drinking and drugs. Stela has vowed that she herself will not touch drugs, nor will she have a personal relationship with anyone who does.

  • 3. Moesia: Moesia is filled with bad memories. Her parents died there. The house she grew up in has fallen to disrepair. She hates the rocky ground and the insular people who seem to care little for their neighbors. Even if she never sees Moesia again in her lifetime, it'll still be too soon.

    Fears:

  • 1. Being Murdered: Watching her uncle invade her home and kill her father has left its mark on Stela. She's obsessive about closing doors and shielding them with her Purple Dusk. She's considered undergoing her Offering earlier for the increased protection of another Jewel to keep herself safe from being attacked while vulnerable.

  • 2. Becoming an Addict: Stela remembers the circumstances of her mother’s death. She saw her father die. In both cases, their inability to get sober played a large part in their demise. Did they pass those addictive tendencies down to her, like her eye color and hair color? Stela is terrified that it’s just a matter of time before her bane catches her unaware and sends her into a spiral of dependency that destroys her life and the future she’s trying to build.

  • 3. Duncan is her only family: Duncan killed her father and then "adopted" her. She can't leave him. She can't escape him and he has connections everywhere. Stela fears that she'll remain a prisoner, bound to play the grateful niece to the man who ruined her life.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Craft-Enhanced Sight: Stela processes visual information at an accelerated rate, allowing her to clearly see objects in motion without loss of detail or clarity. She can read a parchment on a desk with a single glance while in motion. She can also track the movements of an individual using Craft to enhance their reflexes and speed as if they are moving normally.

  • 2. Protecting Inner Barriers: Stela’s first lessons among the Shaos involved protecting herself from Reader’s daily attempts to pluck information from her mind. Attempts to penetrate her inner barriers slide away like rain over glass, preventing her thoughts from being read.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Vanishing/Conjuring Objects: Moving items to and from her psychic cabinet causes Stela intense strain, bad enough that she develops a nasty headache anytime she had to do it. She's not sure why it happens, but it's lead her to be extremely discerning about what she chooses to hide because the ensuing headache needs to be worth the effort.

  • 2. Memory Crystals: A boon to both a Priestess and a Shaos, Stela’s memory crystals are tainted by memories of her father’s murder. Whenever she attempts to make one, it isn’t long before the crystal is corrupted with images of the moment of her father’s death, overriding whatever information she attempts to place into it.

    History:

Stela Petrescu was the third child born to Alexandru Petrescu, a Warlord Prince with more than his share of faults and failings. Alexandru’s troubled past led him into life of Jenica Rotaru, a Witch in a small village in southern Moesia. The pair hit it off quickly, finding that they were as compatible sexually as they were incompatible in every other way. Stela’s earliest memories of her parents include raucous arguments followed by frenetic apologies in the bedroom. Early in her life, Alexandru rededicated himself to his music; by the time she’d earned her Purple Dusk, Stela was already doing two-a-day practices under her father’s critical tutelage.

Years of drug abuse lead to Jenica’s death in 183, leaving father and daughter to fend for themselves. They moved to Rovinari where Stela grew enamored of the big city and everything it offered. Stela dreamed of being a High Priestess or serving the Conclave in other ways, believing that she’d bring great prestige to her family name.

Her entire world turned upside-down in her twelfth year.

Stela loved her father’s flowing handwriting and tried to copy it at every opportunity. She snooped through his personal papers and learned of the family he never told her about. Arguments, apologies, and other communications painted the picture of a man running from the mistakes of another life. Alexandru caught her and, in his rage, threatened to harm her if she ever touched his personal items again. For the first time, Stela was truly terrified of her father. She went to bed that night praying that she’d never see that look in his eyes again.

She got her wish hours later.

The chill woke her from her sleep first. Stela left her bedroom ony to find the landing and stairs covered in ice. At the bottom of the staircase, Alexandru struggled with a man Stela had never seen. Her father locked eyes with her, told her to run, and that warning cost him in his life. The intruder killed him and then turned his attention on Stela. She ran, barring herself inside her room, but it was too late. Her father’s killer found her and told her that she was coming to live with him.

This was Stela’s introduction to her uncle, Duncan Petrescu.

They got on poorly at first. She demanded to know why he killed her father, but was unsatisfied with his answers. She spoke to others, hoping to learn more about to Duncan that way and learned nothing. Finally, she stole money from her uncle, seeking a Shaos who would lay bare her uncle’s life and grant her the leverage to extricate herself from his grasp.

The Shaos known as Reader kidnapped her at their meeting on Duncan’s orders.

Reader trained her as a courtesan, including thrice-daily practices with the violin. Stela's first two years with Reader pushed her to her limits and beyond, showing her that she could handle more than she believed. She began training as a Priestess just one year ago under the tutelage of Reveka Vantu, a Shaos known as Watcher. While the reason for her learning was to give the Shaos a foothold within the Conclave, Stela found that she enjoys the role and arts of the Priestess nearly as much as she does being a Shaos.

Reader acted as a patron of the arts and accompanied Stela to recitals and salons of the aristos. The pair culled information from Stela's fans and later compared notes to ferret out the plots of those who believed that they held the power within Dena Nehele. Reader named her Arbiter for her ability to judge valuable information (and people) from the useless.

Now, she’s been commanded to return to Bidea by the Hedgemon, a member of the Guild she’s heard of, but never encountered. If she can impress this powerful Shaos, she can ask for nearly anything she desires. Including the Myos training necessary to kill Duncan and avenge her father.

Only then can she truly move on with her life.

    Character in Play:

    I am in position, Arbiter.

The spear-to-distaff thread echoed in her mind prompting Stela to set her water glass aside. She raised her violin and her bow, readying herself for the final song of the evening. She’d chosen “Stay with Me, My Love”, an up-tempo song that had encouraged more than one amorous couple to dance each of the last one-hundred twelve times she’d performed it. Stela hated the song but it made an excellent finale for this gathering because it gave everyone something to hum to on the way home. And at four and a half minutes in length, it was three minutes longer than Reader needed to finish the job.

    She hoped.

Midnight arrived. Stela drew out the first note to capture the room's attention, her gaze taking in the position of the guards spread about the room. Those who knew the song clapped softly or took the hand of their escort, heading to the dance floor. Stela noted Lady Dionescu with her Male of the Month. Does her nephew know about her hungers? She'd ponder it later.

She closed her eyes and began to play.

Reader was at the top of the stairs, sight-shielded, heading for the last bedroom on the right. The inner walls of the home were had not been webbed against intruders as the outer walls had. Lady Plesu believed that once she was safe inside her home, no one would dare come for her. She was right, after a fashion.

Her son Dominik, on the other hand, was highly desired by her husband’s enemies.

Reader would be passing through the wall right now, finding Dominik in bed with his mother’s best friend, Lady Banciu.

The song reached its crescendo and Stela readied herself for the finale.

Banciu was no match for Reader, not even if he hadn’t spent three weeks studying her personal defenses to ensure he could beat her when the time arrived. She collapsed as the poison dart struck home in her neck. A second dart found Dominik’s arm and the young man collapsed in a tangle of limbs and linens. Three minutes from the beginning of the song, the people of Ravnica Village danced and made merry. Stela wondered what it was like to be self-absorbed.

Target acquired, Arbiter. Wrap it up.

The violin cried for the final time sixty seconds later. The people of Ravnica applauded and Stela rose from her chair and bowed, taking a moment to bask in their adoration. Her smile for them was genuine and she bowed once more before heading for the edge of the stage.

Reader was there to escort her off stage and away from the party. They had a two-hour ride to the rendezvous followed by a long night of questioning Dominik about his mother's plans. She did not know when she'd have time to pray tonight, and it unsettled her. That thought remained at the back of her mind as she turned over the questions she needed to ask, hoping to put Dominik at ease.

    The first act was over.

It was time to start work.
