Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Sumie is bright, vivacious, and fun. She always has an idea for something to do, and is filled with a great appreciation for life. She's great at accommodating the needs of others and a smart gift-giver; she is an excellent buffer zone when two people need to interact who maybe shouldn't. Sumie is pretty skilled at bringing other people around to her own point of view, a real people-person, a skill which has served her well in her training as a Queen.

This is all true, but it's also a front she's created in service of her career. Really, Sumie is pretty introverted; she'd be perfectly happy to socialize in small groups of her friends, and doesn't particularly like the spotlight as much as she just likes being a Queen. She could live the rest of her life without being seen at banquets and feast dinners, but knows that that's not an option to reach the career heights she desires. She's ambitious, but measured about it: she knows she has to pay her dues, and has been carefully working her way into the good graces of the Courts she's trained in, though she really only took the reins of her favor-winning when she was about fourteen. While a lot of kids in her social situation--young Tacean Queens--are off experimenting with drugs and counterculture, Sumie is quietly befriending the First Circle of the Court she serves. She is devotedly independent, great at planning and budgeting, and highly aware of how she comes off to people.

Sumie is not a land queen. She feels the rhythms of the land deeply, and she cares for it, but her skills lay with the people around her: mediating, calming tempers, and ensuring that everyone reaches a conclusion that leaves them feeling good about what just happened. Sumie requires validation; she needs people to think she's cool. She needs people to look up to her as a role model and she wants people to only say nice things about her. She micromanages her friend circle, she puts an obscene amount of effort into looking a certain way, and she expects to be rewarded with praise and acknowledgement for doing what she does. Unfortunately, this is hard to come by; people just seem to expect her to put out all this effort, and it can wear on her in big ways. A single piece of criticism can throw Sumie off-kilter for a week, never mind an actual insult. She wore a kimono a poet thought was the wrong color for her once and has never worn that color again. She takes all criticism very personally, and can yo-yo between believing she's the best and thinking she's the lowest of the low on one catty comment.

With a distant artist for a mother, her father peddling influence, and a very public career, Sumie has never really known a life where her image wasn't everything. If it will benefit her, she plays her friends off each other to build up her own importance to them (and her own reputation with the Court) when she solved the problem. She spreads rumors and makes up lies to serve her career. Since her mentor’s very public disgrace, Sumie has cleaned up her act--at least on the political stage--and stepped out of the limelight, focusing instead on her education and her career, but that manipulative core is still there. She still tries to twist situations to make herself look better, even if it means lying, she's just less purposeful about it--which actually is worse for her career. Like, the kind of worse that leaves her getting exiled to Dena Nehele as an example.

Likes:
  • Music - Sumie plays the seven-stringed zither and finds it quite calming. She loves to sing, to dance, and to perform, and finds herself especially drawn to countercultural events in the cities of Tacea when she gets to travel around the Territory. Her talents in this arena helped her rise to the City Court of Fukuoka under Motoko Ueda no Shingetsu; when that Court was dissolved, her artistic accomplishments promoted her to the District Court of Kitayama.
  • Being wanted - Sumie craves the knowledge that she’s wanted, needed, and necessary. She wants the people around her to miss her when she’s gone, to be always aware of her absence, and to seek out her company when she isn’t present. Nothing tickles her fancy better than having many places to be and many people to see, and nothing sends her mood spiraling faster than isolation.
  • Archery - It’s the Shingetsu style weapon, and Sumie is quite good at it. She has a dab hand for targeting and rarely, if ever, loses an arrow to anything except accidentally clustering them too close. Notably, she doesn’t show off this skill; she only practices it with dear friends, so her talent is not well known.
Dislikes:
  • Children - Sumie takes offense to things that are young and vulnerable. They awaken weird instincts in her to protect and nurture, and she doesn’t have time for that. Still, she takes particular offense to children, especially being lumped in with children.
  • Motoko’s disgrace - Sumie loves Motoko Ueda (no Shingetsu!!) with all her heart, and considers her the big sister that Sumie never had. She doesn’t believe that the accusations leveled against Motoko and her family by Xiong Teng are true, no matter that everyone seems to believe the evidence, even the great Seung Corro. She knows Motoko, and Motoko would never do what Seung Corro and Xiong Teng say she did.
  • Listening to her own work - Sumie has recorded some songs on music crystals. Sumie tried listening to them once. Sumie is never doing that again. She wants to control her own image, but for whatever reason, hearing her own voice on a recording makes her want to die from humiliation.
Fears:
  • Her true father’s identity - Sumie is not stupid. When she touches her father of record’s hand, she feels no blood in her calling to him. But why would her mother, a daughter of a Kagen vassal family, run off and claim some other man as Sumie’s father when she could’ve named no one or just borne Sumie with no consequences? The only thing that makes sense is that there was something deeply, horribly wrong with Sorako’s relationship with her father. Sumie is terrified that her father is a criminal, a pervert, or worse, and that his bad blood will ruin everything she tries.
  • Ruling - She wants to rule, but now her mentor has become persona non grata in Tacea. The woman who taught Sumie almost everything she knows about solving interpersonal problems, Teiko Ueda, was executed by the Territory Court of Tacea for treason. On top of all of that, Sumie just doesn’t like the land-parts of being a Queen; she likes to rule people, to tend to people, instead of things. If she’s put on a throne, Sumie knows she’ll fail.
  • Losing her (good) reputation - Sumie is terrified of acquiring a bad reputation. She’s a young Queen, and there are so many opportunities for doors and windows to close in her face. She’s only just coming to realize that her words have long-lasting consequences, and that more people are looking at her than she sees in lessons or Court meetings.
Craft Strengths:
  • Emotional Healing - Sumie is gifted at a Queen’s Emotional Healing Craft, but not in a way that anyone would want necessarily shared out. She can solve problems at about the level you’d expect for a Rose Queen, but where she really shines is making problems (that she can then fix in order to make herself look more important or useful to the people around her). Her emotional manipulation is more difficult to detect than one would expect from a Rose.
  • Cosmetic Craft - Sumie would never dare be seen with a hair out of place. She is amazing at cosmetic craft: securing her makeup, smoothing out or pinning up her hair.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Land sense - Can’t do it. Sumie is incapable of sensing anything about the dirt on which she stands, no matter how hard she tries or how much Craft she pours into it. All she gets is a headache. This massively disadvantages her, since she never knows what land is well-tended and what land actually needs her attention until she’s already gifting it.
  • Mending Flesh - Someone else has to fix up her cuts when she Gifts land using her blood. Sumie can’t manage to even mildly staunch the bleeding.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Sorako Yoshida, White to Tiger Eye witch, 36 [158AP]
Blood Father: Maseo no Shingetsu, Rose to Opal Warlord, 37 [157AP]
Father of Record: Masae Yoshida, Blood male, 47 [147AP]
Siblings: None

History:
Sumie’s mother was the third daughter of a Kagen vassal family in 173AP. She accompanied Naruko no Kagen, then Queen of the Clan, north on a visit to the Shingetsu Clan Complex as a lady-in-waiting, where she dallied away some time in the okiya where Maseo no Shingetsu was training as a geisha. They fell in love--or they thought they did--and Sorako found more reasons to visit Maseo at the okiya. A half-Jewel technically couldn’t have a patron, but that didn’t stop two determined young people from making bad decisions. When Sorako became pregnant, her family demanded satisfaction from the Shingetsu line that had placed Maseo in her path. Instead, they got money and a demand that Sorako dispose of the pregnancy.

Sorako did not. Instead, she left her comfortable life in Kamuzawa, electing to settle in the far north of Tacea. Perhaps out of vain hope she would see Maseo again, she found herself a place in Kitayama, near the base of the mountains. The money that the Shingetsu had given her for an abortion went instead to prenatal care. She gave birth to a little Queen in 176AP. Though she sent a letter to Maseo informing him of the birth, he never responded.

Sumie, “clear blessing,” was a colicky and demanding child. Without financial support from her family--disgusted by her decision to keep a child sired by a geisha when she had had a perfectly cromulent marriage to a Kagen male lined up, even if the child was a Queen--or friends around her, Sorako found herself married to an artist’s agent named Masae, whose family was wealthy. She’d long had a nascent talent for design, and Sorako turned her hand and attention towards long hours in the studio, crafting garments that would go on to be worn by the very people who had ruined her life. Sumie was left in the care of a long series of nannies and tutors who saw her trained in basic Craft and the necessities, craving her mother’s attention and never quite understanding why Sorako always seemed so sad when she saw Sumie for those brief moments at breakfast and dinner.

That seemed to change at Sumie’s Birthright, when she came away from the Altar with a Rose birthright gleaming in hand. For almost three years, Sumie had attention at home as well as at her new lessons in the Court that ruled the low mountains of Kitayama. She flourished, picked up skills left and right that would serve her well, and showed off her blooming musical talent in “concerts” for her adoring mother.

That ended in 186. Masae used his influence among the artists in Kitayama to send her to the City Court of Fukuoka as a ward. It was indubitably an honor, something that would help her rise in the future and set her up for a good life, but it also ended three years of distraction for Masae’s most profitable artist.

Motoko Ueda no Shingetsu, Queen of Fukuoka, was a kind mentor, and the Court of Fukuoka ran like clockwork under her hand. Once Sumie recovered her feet from the change, she took to Fukuoka like a duck to water. But more than one of her lessons came from the mouth of Teiko Ueda, and Sumie absorbed all of them. Being sent away by her mother had taught her the wrong lesson. If no one saw a use for her--if she wasn’t directly and visibly valuable--then no one would keep her around. Sumie was tired of having to struggle for the attention and love she felt was rightfully hers.

The first few times she used her Emotional Healing Craft to ill effect, she got caught. Her young age, her Caste, her Jewels, and her well-chosen targets meant that her punishment was little more than a smack on the wrist. It wasn’t enough to deter Sumie from trying again… and again… until she got it right. Once the problem built enough in her target (for instance, a young male suddenly too afraid of the dark to perform his duties), Sumie would swoop in and fix it, and from there she would scoop up all the admiration and adoration. No one seemed to remember her early forays into causing such issues, and she gained a reputation for being quite the little problem-solver.

Sumie was not privy to the councils that took place in the Fukuoka Court once Ishiyo no Izayoi was elevated to the Territory Throne. She had no idea what the Ueda family was planning, and so when the Court of Fukuoka was raided by members of the newly-formed Territory Guard in the spring of 194, she was as shocked as anyone else. Her youth prevented her from being present at the sentencing or the trial, but Shingetsu loyalists kept the remnants of the Fukuoka Court updated. Motoko’s father killed himself; her mother refused honorable suicide, and was hung; Motoko herself was disowned and imprisoned in the Territory Court, and Sumie could not believe the injustice of it all.

She’d initially been cowed, and stepped back out of the limelight. But as the usurper Xiong Teng took more power, sent away members of Four Clans vassal families, some of her courage came back. Sumie began to protest, alleging that the Dragon Throne belonged to Motoko Ueda--the Shingetsu candidate--the rightful candidate. A Queen could gather quite an audience based on her Caste alone, and unrest was growing in the city of Fukuoka on her command. Though her Clan Queen, Sakura no Shingetsu, asked her to stop--though Motoko herself begged through letter after letter for Sumie to drop it, even admitting to full knowledge of the treason--Sumie wouldn’t allow herself to lose someone else she loved. Motoko deserved better; Motoko wasn’t like that. But Xiong Teng couldn’t permit anyone with a perceived platform from a Great Clan to foment rebellion, and since Sakura and Motoko could do nothing to corral her, the Dragon Mother herself stepped in.

Just as it had when she was discovered to be practicing using Emotional Healing to manipulate, her youth and Caste protected her again from the full deserved repercussions of her actions. Instead of killing her outright, as was her right as Dragon Queen, Xiong Teng elected to exile her to Dena Nehele for five years, where she would serve the Territory Court: First as a Ward, and then in whatever capacity they deemed fit. Her Virgin Night was handled before departure, though she was not permitted to make her Descent.

There’s much more than another Wardship awaiting her in Dena Nehele, though she doesn’t know it yet. Her father serves in the Second Circle of the Territory Court where she is about to be placed.

Character in Play:
In her dreams, Sumie was arrested with them. In her dreams, the navy-blue and gray uniforms of the Thousand Swords swarmed past and over her, and they bound her with Craft and dragged her away to a dank, dark cell to await her inevitable torture and execution. That wasn't what really happened, but dreams were barely ever logical.

In reality, she had sat in her lessons, staring out the window to the garden. The Steward of the Court, Yaeko Hayashi, was droning on about the tithing structure of the Shingetsu Province, where Sumie would one day rule. As a village Queen--her likely first placement--she would be enabled to adjust individual tithes, provided her Court blah, blah blah, blah. Before her, in the garden, she'd seen an unfamiliar uniform with a familiar symbol wrapped around the wearer's arm. "Who's out there," Sumie had asked, rising from her cushion to peer over the garden.

Like bees, the Thousand Swords had swarmed the Court of Fukuoka. Pounding feet raced down the arteries of the Court's heart, slammed open screen doors, and arrested the Court members. Sumie was too startled to scream as two unfamiliar men pinned Lady Yaeko to the surface of her desk, where they had just been reviewing the tithes together. They treated Sumie herself more gently. A young woman had come to her and, without so much as a by-your-leave, turned her face from the sordid sight. "Come away, Lady Yoshida," said the woman, a Captain of the Thousand Swords. "This isn't your fight." Only then did she realize that her Rose was burning at her fingertips, a power bolt just waiting to be released.

She looked to the Steward, still pressed against the desk. Lady Yaeko nodded firmly in agreement, though her face was reddened and bruised beneath one eye. So Sumie had gone away.

In her dreams, there was torture. But in the real way things happened, she'd been sat in a pleasant room as two officers of the Thousand Swords asked her question after question:

"Has Lady Ueda ever expressed animosity towards Ishiyo no Izayoi?"

Well, yes. Who among the Shingetsu hadn't? The enmity between Tiger and Crane was so old and well-entrenched no one knew its origin. But Sumie didn't see how that would lead to the raid on the Court of Fukuoka, or even what that had to do with anything. Oh, Night! Did they think that Motoko had been behind the attack on Ishiyo no Izayoi? Impossible. Sister Motoko was a Healer Queen. She'd never hurt anyone.

"Did you ever observe strange comings and goings on the part of the Ueda family?"

No! Wait, yes. Otohiko and Seishi... they disappeared a lot, even though they were First Circle. Sumie was pretty sure those were just errands, though. Other males disappeared all the time, and no one asked any questions. They always came back, didn't they?

"What about Lady Teiko Ueda?"

What about her?

The questions spiraled deeper and deeper, and despite all her training Sumie couldn't put them into a shape that made sense. She should've been able to figure out what happened, what went wrong, but all she knew was that it was about the attack on the Territory Court.

When the questioning was done, they led her to a nicely-appointed room. Her lessons continued while she was in the care of the Territory Court; she was, eventually, returned to Fukuoka.

In her dreams, though, they walk her to the gallows and hang her right there.

As per this post in points transactions & her Jewel adoption from Maseo, could I get the cut-uncut on Sumie's Rose to Opal (though she's only got the Birthright right now)?

Then I need approvals from Leez (for Motoko and the Uedas), Gavin (for adoption of fam roll and introduction of Child), and Phedre (for a Queen in DN).
