Distinguishing Features:

Faction: Jacks

Personality

Personality:

Q is not confrontational. He is easygoing, a problem solver, and dedicated. When confronted with a problem, he likes to think about it from multiple perspectives and then pursue the past of least resistance. This is what happened when he left his father. He could have simply fought back, taken control of their house, but he didn't. He decided to leave instead, still coming back to help a man that would sooner beat him for it than thank him. This shows the strange paradox that is Quinten. On the one hand, he prefers to avoid confrontation, but on the other, his loyalties often lead him into them. His father. Kale. Radu. Even the Jacks. Conflict after conflict. He only cares about a few people though, so he is more than willing to take some licks for them.

Quinten's chosen profession, that of a professional thief, shows his personality most keenly. He prefers to slip into the shadows, hide behind shields, watch other people's lives, because his is not very interesting. It is a constant struggle to survive and Q does not see that fact changing in the near future. Radu had disappeared and he still has another year or so until he gets full Jack status. Even then, he has to develop contacts and make a name for himself. All of that takes confidence and people-skills. Aspects that Q does not possess.

Despite Quinten's initial shyness, once he has gotten to know someone well, he can be quiet funny. Even charming. He knows how to have a good time, even if he so rarely gets to do it. Only a handful of people have ever seen the true less-guarded side of Q though. He does not make friends easily.

Likes:
  • 1 Radu - He looks up to the Warlord Prince almost like a father. He would do almost anything for him. He has been the one constant thing in Q's life for the past few years.
  • 2 Feeling safe- Living in Dene Nehele  he wants this feeling as much as he can get it. The streets aren't the safest place, but with Radu and the Jacks helping him, Q has developed a sense of comfort that he has firmly grasped onto.
  • 3 Animals- He does not invite anyone over to his "home", because he has adopted over twenty street animals. His little shack is overflowing, with other street animals following the free food and occasionally appearing. He simply can't turn down an animal.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Olives - Q tried them once when he took them off the shelf of a local food market. They tasted like rancid fruit.
  • 2 His father - It is a strange relationship he has with his father. He doesn't hate the man, but he feels obligated to help him, even though his father treats him like shit. Somewhere, deep down, he still loves Johnny, but he is hard pressed to remember why after visiting him.
  • 3 Snow and rain- The boy lives on the street and even though he has a place to stay with Robin the room isn't always overly warm in the winter. Sometimes Quinten feels like he was born in the wrong territory. A nice dessert place seems ideal to him.
Fears:
  • 1 Being alone forever - There was a moment when he was a kid, when his mother had just been killed and his father had passed out, that he felt uncontrollably sad. It wasn't even the type of sadness that made you cry; it was more of an ache. That feeling, the feeling off loneliness, is something that Q doesn't want to have to endure again.
  • 2 Being in small spaces - Q has never been trapped in a small space for a long period of time, so he doesn't know why they make him so uncomfortable. One time he had to hide in a small crawlspace though and he nearly had a panic attack from the experience.
  • 3 Letting people close to him- This directly contradicts his fear of being alone, but sometimes fears are not logical. Quinten has the desire to be close to people, but just like any other unconfident male, he doesn't want to get hurt in the process.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Sight Shields: Q received his birthright jewel and never received any formal training, but he is nearly artful at using his craft to silence his movements. He started working on moving silently when he was four, so he uses his natural skills coupled with the Craft he learned by just playing around with it to silence his footfalls and wrap the shadows around himself. He could be in a darkly lit room for hours and no one would ever know he was there.
  • 2 Physical Shields: Quinten is also rather good at shielding, because cannot fight worth anything, so he has to have some way to protect himself if his sight shields fail.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Compulsion Craft: He hates the idea of forcing people to do things against their will. Even if someone had been willing to teach him that craft, he would have turned them down on the spot.
  • 2 Basic Healing: He is absolutely horrible at healing minor wounds as well. Most street rats can at least heal the cuts they pick up from stealing and shuffling up and down walls, but such delicate Craft is beyond him.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Eve Heartley - Yellow to Rose Healer
Father: Johnny Heartly - Rose to Summer Sky Prince
Siblings:
Kale Heartley - Yellow Warlord

History:

“Johnny Boy” Heartley was one of the best Jacks in the Guild. He handled his contracts with a brutal efficiency, his skills not focused in a single area. He could rob, bash, sneak, and protect like the best of them. His entire life changed when he met Eve though. He fell in love hard. The two were married quickly, still fueled by love and lust. Johnny had a bit of a temper, but Eve knew exactly how to calm him down. The two were like fire and ice.

It wasn’t long until they had their first child was born: Quinten. He looked exactly like his mother, same eyes, same chin, same full lips. Kale was born soon after, int he same year. The little Warlords led a happy life his first six years. His mother took care of him and his father went out to earn them food and the roof over their heads.

Everything changed when Eve died though.

She was killed walking home from the market with Quinten. Stabbed. Her groceries taken. Just like that. Johnny found his son next to his mother, crying. Q doesn’t like to think about that memory much, the fact that he did not try and protect his mother a heavy burden. Life got worse after the attack, much worse. Johnny spiraled, the grief over losing his wife too much for him to bear. He started to drink, heavily, his contracts going by the wayside. Food became scarce. They moved out of their apartment into a small shack in the heart of the slums of Bidea. Occasionally he would raise a hand to Quinten, in his more sober moments, his face like a reflection of Eve’s.

Q began to develop complex feelings towards his father. He loved him. He understand that his violence was because of his grief, but that didn’t help the young boy much.

Life became worse and worse for Q, his Summer Sky Birthright, as dark as his fathers, only serving to deplete their scarce food further. Money that the boy brought in from begging began to disappear, used for Johnny’s devolution. When Quinten tried to ask where it was, the more brutal side of his temper would come out.

Eventually, when he was twelve, he left with his brother. Not for good. No. He couldn’t do that. He visited his father every once and awhile, giving away precious food and coin to the man that never healed from their mother’s death. He usually received a beating for his troubles, but Q considered it his duty, since he had not been able to protect his mother. His father’s current state felt partially like partially his fault.

The boy didn’t fare well on the street, but it was better than being at home. This way, when he gathered a bit of coin, he could use it on something productive. Q found himself a small burned out shack in the middle of Bidea. He rebuilt some of it with his own hands, from scavenged materials that he begged off people or found in the trash. It became his and Kale's little home, the roof hardly leaking and a small stove that he stole from a shopkeeper.

Stealing, by the time he turned fourteen, had become his life. It was a great thing he was particularly skilled at it. While he wasn’t a good fighter, sight shields came naturally to him, like breathing. Locks were like small puzzles and the Warlord loved puzzles. People were like story books, their lives a series of routines and secrets. He began to steal all sorts of things from shops, houses, purses, and even temples. He would then try and sell the loot for money. Secrets sold well sometimes too.

It didn’t always bring in enough, because he was very careful about what he stole and when, but Q and Kale didn’t starve on the streets. That didn’t mean he was full though either, especially since he couldn’t always run from others that might want to take any loot he had worked hard for. It was around this time, at sixteen, that Q first met Radu. The boy had just finished a job, a golden candlestick holder in his hand, when a bigger boy cornered him in an alley. Usually Q would have just handed over the stolen treasure, not wanting any confrontation, but it had been a particularly dry spell lately and he needed the money from this candlestick.

So he tried to strike the male with the candlestick, only enraging the Prince. He must have been half way through a beating when Radu came upon the scene, the Warlord Prince viciously killing the male, blood dripping onto the pavement.

Quinten stared up at the male, backing into the alley wall. He had never seen someone ride the Killing Edge before and he had never seen someone murdered. Radu threatened the boy with his life before letting him go, the candlestick forgotten. Unfortunately for the other male though, Q became strangely fascinated by Radu. No one had ever protected him before, threat or no. The boy followed him around for several months, the Prince snapping and snarling until Q’s stubborn persistence began to weaken Radu’s ability to push him away.

Quinten began to idolize the male. Anytime he came to him with a black eye or a bruised jaw, Radu would hunt down the perpetrators and make them pay. Sometimes so much so that Quinten found himself stepping in to save them. Despite the attachment that grew between the two, Radu still needed his space. He did not want Q around all the time and the young boy began to think of his future. He couldn’t have Radu protect him for the rest of his life.

So at seventeen, Quinten followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the Jacks, Dashal Darko taking him on as his apprentice. He is a Journeymen now, nearing full Guild status, and the future looks brighter than it ever has.

What could go wrong?

“I brought you some food and some medicine. You have to promise to take it, because it cost enough to make your head spin.”

The words roamed through the darkened apartment, old dishes and empty liquor bottles scattered on the floor. The windows were boarded up. Q had thought it was to keep out thieves, but then he had realized his father couldn’t stand the light. He had fallen that far. The boy picked up the bottled and vanished them, sighing. Well. At least he could sell them alter for a few coppers. That was more than his father had contributed in a while.

“Dad?” The sound echoed against the dead walls.

Quinten put out the still lit cigarette in the living room and closed the ice box so his father’s carton of milk wouldn’t spoil—if it hadn’t already. He crept through the room, looking behind the stained couch. The Warlord had spent more than one night curled up with his brother on that thing, their father locked in his bedroom.

It was only as he got closer to that single room, the pain chipping off of the door now, that he heard Johnny—crying. The sobs made their way through the cracked door, a puddle of piss pooled around him.

Quintin entered the room and stood behind his father, staring. The former Jack was holding an old photo crystal of Eva, shaking uncontrollably. His son reached out a hand, uncertain, before putting it on Johnny’s shoulder.

The response was instantaneous. The broken man spun around and slammed Quinten against the rough wall, his hand at the Warlord’s throat. The boy struggled to breath and his fingers clawed at Johnney’s hands. By the time he was thrown carelessly to the ground, his vision had begun to brown out. Gasping, Q called in the food and medicine, leaving it on the floor, before sprinting to the door, leaving his father alone in his darkened house.
