Play By: Lucy Hale
Distinguishing Features: Oryon is far stronger than her fair looks would lead many to believe, muscles honed from daily physical activity. Also incredibly notable is the feisty and usually very grumpy red and white pig that is her constant companion. His name is Beau and he is an intelligent adolescent male that she found as a piglet wandering halfway down the mountain.

Beau --

Personality

Personality:

Xander often compares Oryon to a young and spirited wild horse. She has a lot of passion, and while she doesn't always know where she's going she's determined to run in order to get there. She can't stand being still for too long and she doesn't like feeling caged in. Fiercely loyal to her herd, she won't hesitate to buck and trample and put on a show of bravado in defense of them. Granted, instead of hooves and teeth she tends to use a very large, weighted butcher knife... and occasionally her teeth. Feisty when provoked is a good way to describe her, and sometimes feisty even when not.

Oryon hates the word ambitious, even if it can be an accurate descriptor for her at time. It's just that the ambitions she has are not what many expect. She doesn't have personal ambitions of becoming a high-ranking Queen - which is what most people assume based on her general energy and enthusiasm. Ory is happy being a the Queen of her little village. Maybe one day in the VERY distant future, she'll feel comfortable overseeing another small village in addition to her own that is further down the mountain, if they needed it - but if she spends the rest of her life ruling her village and keeping it safe, helping it prosper, she'll be happy. Her ambitions come, instead, in how she plans to make true on those wishes. She wants to push herself and her Craft, dive deeper into the land and learn what it's hiding. She wants to explore the mountains, establish a mine, bring more resources and trade into her village. They are high in the mountains but also in the far west of the Province, close to the river that serves as a border between Moesia and Aechia. That river could be used to ferry resources if she could establish a reliable way to get goods up and down the mountains - and that is exactly what she's trying to do.

She loves her village, she loves her people, she loves the land - and she wants more for them. She wants them to feel safe traveling down the mountain and into the bigger towns and cities. She wants the young witches to be able to go get caste training. She wants to be able to bring a Healer to her village. She wants... she wants so much for them - and she is more than willing to work to get it.

That's one thing about Oryon, she's a girl who doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. She enjoys being physical. Hunting, climbing, hiking, and other sorts of outdoor activities are high on her list of favorite things, and if she can benefit her village some way in the process than all the better for it. Since she rules a small village with only a First Circle (because really, that's all she needs), her duties as a Queen differ quite vastly from what a Queen of a larger territory might have. There are far less meetings and paperwork and a lot more instances where she is needed halfway up the mountain to inspect a grove of their pear trees. Or week-long hiking trips to plot the best path down into one of the bigger towns for market day because a rockslide cut off their usual route. These are not chores for her but some of her favorite parts of being Queen of her village.

Although to many she very clearly personifies what one would expect of a confident, social young Queen (and in most cases she is), there are a few things that throw her completely out of her element. One of those things is romance - in that she is completely hopeless when it comes to it. All the boys (and girls) she knows she practically grew up with. Any flirting she does is usually completely in the realm of platonic fun. She's had sex a whole one time and it was her Virgin Night, which was done by a member of Lady Adamara's Court. Any time she feels that flutter of a crush around someone she becomes a bit of a stammering mess. It's embarrassing, and she's working on it - granted, with little hope of success at this point.

Likes:
  • 1 - Her village. There is a trope that many small-town girls feel sequestered in a small village, trapped and bored with their lot. For Ory it is the complete opposite. It isn't that she doesn't like the outside world, she just well and truly loves her home. It's filled with all the people she loves, is surrounded by raw, beautiful nature, and for her at least there's always something to do. It is her whole world and 100% in her comfort zone.
  • 2 - The Land. Oryon is a barefoot flower child. The more time she can spend outdoors with her toes buried in the dirt, the happier she is. She prefers her gardens to be wild and free, protecting patches of wildflowers and cultivating small groves of trees with her special touch, listening to the land to decide how best to form her little patches of Queenspace. Spring and summer are easily her favorite seasons because of how much she can be outside, interacting with the growth and the life of the land around her - while winter at its worst can leave her mopey and despondent, moody from lack of sunlight and the constant need for shoes.
  • 3 - Hunting. Ory is quite proficient with a bow, and though she's only been out to hunt big game a couple of times with Mari, she will often go out hunting rabbits, quail, turkey, and other small bits of game. She uses everything from the animals she kills, the meat turned into meals for herself and her family or some other family in the village, and the feathers, hide, and bones to the Healers, Black Widows, and Priestesses to be used in their spellcraft.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Arrogant city-folk. Regular city-folk are fine, and she's sure there are plenty of regular nice ones about, but the ones that really grind her gears are the ones that look at her like some flea-bitten country bumpkin. Oooohhhh and those people who hear a countryside accent and automatically dumb down what they're saying because for some reason country means simple minded? HA. She'll show them what's what and she'll do it with her daddy's meat cleaver in her hand and a pleased-as-pie smile on her lips.
  • 2 - Rabbits. They are nuisances and pests, eating what little they can grow in their gardens and making a mess of just about everything else. Moreover, she can't wrap her mind around how some people (usually city people) seem to think that they make good pets! The only good rabbit is a dead rabbit - particularly one she can turn into a yummy stew.
  • 3 - Dressing up. It isn't that she doesn't like being girly or frilly, because she does enjoy pretty things like jewelry and pretty skirts or blouses, but what she considers to be pretty and feminine is what many would call the bare minimum. Elegant gowns and high heels, strands of pearls and an updo that took hours to twist and pin and dress... all of that todo that comes with the higher up and more formal Courts is incredibly intimidating to her. When she was doing her training under Adamara she had to attend several such evens and each time she had to dress "Queenly" she just didn't feel like herself. Her confidence plummets and she feels completely out of place. Even the day-to-day regalia expected of her as a Queen at the higher Courts makes her uncomfortable, but she's afraid that if she doesn't at least partially assimilate to expectations that she won't be taken seriously as a ruler and she won't be able to do what she needs to for her village and her people - so she does put more effort into creating a.. finer image when interacting with higher Courts.
Fears:
  • 1 - Not being taken seriously as a Queen. She wears the Yellow and rules an obscure village high in the mountains that no one has ever heard of. Moreover, she isn't an ambitious mover and shaker that is eager to climb the ranks in her Queendom. She just wants to protect her people, serve them, make sure that her little corner of the world is a safe and happy one. But Dena Nehele is a land that thrives on power and the movement of it. She's afraid that because she doesn't fit that profile she won't be able to do a damn thing for her village. Or that if she really wants to be able to make a change she might have to change something in herself and the prospect of either of those options terrifies her.
  • 2 - Being forced to rule more than she can handle. There are so few Queens in Dena Nehele that those still remaining are often ruling districts and Provinces barely off their Offering. Those Queens are young, inexperienced, and often puppetted by the aristo families that were either lucky enough to protect them until maturity or rich enough to buy them (or steal them) and THEN lucky enough to keep them alive until maturity. While Oryon is neither of those, she is a young Queen that managed to survive relatively unscathed. She wants to be a good Queen, she wants to learn and grow and serve her people and the land - and she's terrified that even despite her light Jewels she will somehow be pushed to take more than she can handle simply because she IS a Queen in a land where there are so few and far between.
  • 3 - The Guilds. Also, the power that they have. Just because she's a small town girl doesn't mean she isn't aware of what is going on in the rest of the Territory. She's seen first hand how terrifying the Guilds can be and the kind of power they wield. They give anyone the power to affect another person's life - usually in a very BAD way - just as long as they have enough money to do so. When Rilandra Vlas managed to put a ban on contracts against Queens that lifted the Territory Queen in her eyes, but she still makes her nervous with what everyone says about her being a sort of puppet for the Guilds. Oryon doesn't think that's all true, or at least she doesn't like to think it, but she also doesn't think it's a completely groundless rumor.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Land Sense - Already having a natural kinship with the land even beyond that link as a Queen, Ory was studying and practicing and becoming friends with the land even before she began her official training. While the connection is particularly strong with the land and mountains around her village, Ory can easily slip her senses beneath the surface of the soil to listen to what the land is telling her. This helps her direct her village on where is best to plant new trees, or if those groves they currently have are too congested or parched. She is also working to be able to better read the harder, rockier substance deep within the mountains to be able to eventually identify the minerals therewithin just with her sense and and kinship with the land.
  • 2 - Queen's Gift - Oryon is a very light Jeweled Queen, and while she'd always hoped that she would descend to the Rose she wasn't disappointed with her Yellow as it did hold a vast amount more power in comparison to her White. Learning how to give her Gift within the strict limitations of her White gave her a very precise control over how she directs it, how much to give, and how best to utilize her Gift so that it doesn't just get soaked up willy-nilly. This doesn't mean she isn't inclined to give too much sometimes - particularly if the land is crying for it - but she'd quite adept at the actual utilization of the power she gives.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Warming and Cooling Spells - It isn't that she can't perform them, it's more a matter of moderation. She can't get just the right temperature. Warming spells are either not warm enough or far too hot. Cooling spells either end up damn near freezing something or hover at that weird luke-warm not-quite-cold temperature. Moreover, she gets so frustrated with them that she's likely to waste far too much energy fiddling with the spells trying to get them right and then before you know it she's already exhausted her supply. This can cause trouble for a girl who often forgets her gloves and dislikes shoes.
  • 2 - Telekinesis - She's just never gotten the hang of it, even despite it being one of the very first things a child learns when being instructed in Basic Craft. She has to concentrate very carefully in order to get something to float, but then in directing it once its in the air she's far more likely to lose her hold and let it drop. Moreover, she isn't able to lift anything with much weight to it. Rather than embarrass herself, she's more likely to just give herself a boost of strength with a touch of her Yellow or just walk over and grab it herself than actually use Craft to lift anything.

History:

Rookwood is a village high in the mountains of Moesia that most people tend to forget even exists. There isn't much room for farming among the rocky hills the village is built upon, but they are able to grow several types of fruit trees that they export down the mountain as one of the main factors in their economy. There is nothing quite like a Rookwood pear.

The village itself is a good representation of Dena Nehele as a whole with a fair mingling of landen and Blood residents, most of whom coincide with little to no friction (at least not that is caused by race). There is a high degree of mixing between landen and Blood and you would be hard-pressed to find someone in that village without a drop of one or the other in their heritage. Ory herself comes from mixed-blood parents whom aren't entirely sure how far back they'd have to go to find a pure Blood or landen grandparent.

As the first Queen ever born there (at least as far as anyone could remember), Ory was quite the treasured child. There was the understandable anxiety that came with having a Queen child in Dena Nehele, what with the aristos killing off or kidnapping whatever ones they could find, but Oryon herself didn't know that stress for most of her childhood. Her village was small and fairly isolated. Its residents would travel down the mountain to one of the towns for shopping or market days when necessary, but few outsiders every ventured up to them. This isolation kept her fairly safe - and when she came back from her Birthright with only the White (a relief to just about the whole village - as a darker Jewel would have been hard to ignore when it appeared on the registries) she managed to stay under the radar all the way until it was time for her to really start her training.

She was a scrawny eleven-year-old when she and her parents were attacked. It was days after they'd come back from a small trip down the mountain to visit one of the nearby District Queens to see about some training. They'd been eating breakfast - which was much earlier than city folk probably ate breakfast - when two masked assailants entered their home. They attacked her parents, quickly cutting them down, and were hauling her out of the house as she kicked and screamed when someone else suddenly attacked. It would be years before Ory learned that her savior (and Scary Godmother - as she would come to secretly refer to her as) was a guildswoman who went by the handle of Halcyon. She had been passing through the village on her way to the Shaos training grounds higher up in the mountains - or maybe for some other reason, Ory can never be certain - when she sensed the commotion and decided to intervene.

Thanks to Halcyon, her parents were able to be rushed down the mountain to a Healer and were saved. They both still bear the scars, but they're alive - and for that Ory will always, always be thankful for her Scary Godmother.

The young Queen would see Halcyon here and there in the ensuing years. Never for long - and if she was lucky maybe a word or two was exchanged - but Ory knew that the woman was looking out for her. She didn't really know why, and she couldn't say she was entirely comfortable with the idea, but she was thankful nonetheless -- because thanks to her her parents were alive.

It was also a suggestion from Halcyon that lead her to finish out the bulk of her training under the security provided by the Province Queen of Moesia, Lady Adamara. Rather than become a ward of the court, she commuted down the mountain most days during the spring and summer, and stayed in town with her father in a small flat during the fall and winter. It was a valuable experience, even if it was an intimidating one - and Lady Adamara saw to it that her apprentice was fitted with an escort with genuine training whilst she was there, a protection that her small village could not provide -- at least not up to the same standard.

And so she learned, she grew, she puzzled over the brief interactions she had with her Scary Godmother, rescued a baby pig that quickly became more like a guard dog, and returned to her village to be the Queen she hoped they needed. One that would help them proper, and grow, and succeed. One that would protect them and preserve their prosperity, their peace. She knew she could be that person, that Queen. And she didn't need high heels to do it!

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:

The day was bright, it was fresh, it was warm. Sure, there was the slightest bite in the air, the scent on the wind that bespoke of a frost in the not-too-distant future, but with the happy caress of the sun on her skin Ory was more than willing to ignore it. It was a bit hard to believe that they were this far into the autumn and were still having days like this. In fact, the young Queen might have actually been concerned if it weren't for the chill they'd had earlier this week and that subtle bite lingering in the air now as a gentle warning. It wouldn't be great for their limited crops or the trees if they got tricked into thinking it was going to stay warm and weren't prepared when the frost hit them.

For today, though, for today it would be just fine. Ory was looking forward to spending this time with the land before it settled into it's gentle half-way sleep for the winter.

There was a tugging on her skirt and a soft grunt somewhere near her shins and she looked down, raising a brow before sharply tugging the fabric free of her companion's teeth. "Beau, if you ruin another one of my skirts...."

He grunted, practically rolling his eyes at her, and began to waddle away - fully well knowing that whatever threat she came up with she'd never follow through on.

"Hey! I was talking to you!" The Queen scowled affectionately and took a few jogging steps to catch up. "Rotten brat..." This bit was grumbled a under her breath. But she followed the pig dutifully back toward the village. No doubt he was hungry, he was always hungry, so she best feed him something before he started getting particularly cranky. And maybe she would have a bite of something too. It was already after noon and she hadn't had much since breakfast. A silly detail that for some reason sent those of the male persuasion into a tizzy. Insert eyeroll here.
