    Appearance

    Play By: Tashi Rodriguez
Distinguishing Features: Minerva is 5'4" and has fine-boned pianist's hands with short, finely manicured fingernails.

    Personality

Personality: Minerva is a grasping, ambitious girl. Her first and last concern is herself. Most of her middle concerns are herself, too. She's worked incredibly hard for ten years to snatch power from the jaws of indentured servitude, and is incredibly loathe to let it go.

Minerva is manipulative. Very few things or people matter to her, though she is a Healer and she possesses all the self-sacrificing tendencies that implies. She doesn't put her life and Jewels on the line to heal out of the kindness of her heart, or because she feels any great emotion towards people. She puts the same effort into healing for each person because she genuinely doesn't care about specifics; each life is worth exactly the same amount, and each life is vaguely distasteful. To her, a Queen is the same as a Priestess is the same as a Warlord is the same as a Landen. While she will step up to a line for someone she doesn't even know, she will also remember what she did and bring it up later as leverage if necessary. While she will give loans to the needy, that's exactly what they are: loans. She expects to be paid back for what she puts into a situation, if not immediately then eventually. Not necessarily in money, either, because Minerva trades in much more irreplaceable things than marks.

She's very young to be ruling, and she's not a Queen so people don't accept it as naturally as they do eighteen-year-olds ruling Districts. Nevertheless, Minerva is wise enough to reach out and pull around her a more experienced sort of 'cabinet'. Her manipulative tendencies mean that she can be many things to many people, yes, but it also means she can play her closest confidants against each other in order to come up with the best solution to a problem. Her favorite trick in these closed-door discussions is to convince one side to argue the other, as a method to find out what each side really can't live without. She gathered support from the major factions present in Caecian, and from a significant number of aristo Blood; she's not charismatic so much as she's just straight-up driven.

Most people would characterize Minerva as cautious, and maybe they're right. Her first instincts tend to be audacious rather than conservative, but she also knows first instincts aren't always the best plan, so she will often retreat to consult with her advisors and allies before making any kind of decision. She loathes being put on the spot because it emphasizes her own youthful inexperience.

Her willingness to use her Caste as a weapon sets her apart from most of the women who share it. Carmen Neascu, Minerva's ruling Healer neighbor in Lesser Caecian, may have taken her role out of a desire to protect the lesser beings among them, but Minerva knows she's valuable and that her ability to cure the ills of the body instinctively gives her a certain level of untouchability. Even the Myos tend to squirm when told to kill a Healer (though they'll still do it if the money's right). For the appropriate audience, Minerva can convincingly act to type, advocating for the underdog as if her heart is as soft and sweet as buttercream.

Her early childhood was spent in a working-class household, the firstborn child of a seamstress who couldn't seem to keep her legs closed. She has three younger siblings, all of whom are much lighter-Jeweled than Minerva is, and being the oldest taught her a lot of responsibility very quickly. Later, once she began her healer training supported by an aristo patriarch, her day was incredibly tightly scheduled, with even her rest periods timed down to the minute. Because of this, Minerva is incredibly frugal with her time and with her money and with her emotional investments. She has seen what being too free with any of it could look like, and she has no desire to lose what she has now.

    Likes:
    • Power - Minerva isn't where she is out of the goodness of her heart, not really. She grew up the plaything of a powerful man, and now that she's out from under his thumb she intends to make other people her playthings. She's kind to the people of Caecian because it benefits her to be, and because that's how she holds her control over the District. Her power doesn't come from fear, it comes from love, but if the winds ever changed Minerva would turn with them. If an opportunity for greater power and control came to her, she would jump ship for it in a twitch.
    • Music - Minerva's major hobby is collecting music crystals. If she's present in her home or her office or her clinic, there's a music crystal going, playing some song or another. She likes to sing along while she works, if she's alone, and has an unobjectionable voice. Her favorite social engagements are the ones where someone will be playing, and really enjoys musical performances.
    • Sevastopol - The city that gave her everything, and she knows its heartbeat as she knows her own. Everyone in Sevastopol knows her name, even if they don't know her face, and they adore her. She feels little, truly, but doing good for people in Sevastopol is something she will always make time for, because Sevastopol has done such good for her. She spends as much time as she dares working on projects for her home, intending to turn it to a jewel in Tulzbruja's--and later, Dena Nehele's--crown.
    Dislikes:
    • Aristos - Oh, she despises them. The strength of feeling this particular Healer evinces for the upper crust is at odds with how impersonally she takes almost everything else. She's capable of working with them and even of convincing them that she likes them. She does like a few of them--for instance, Phoebus and Czernobog--but as a class she thinks they ought to be destroyed. (Down with the bourgeoisie!)
    • Queen rule - Minerva sees no reason why a Queen must rule every territory when clearly there are other Castes just as suited. An accident of birth shouldn't predict one's eventual rise; if she wants to rule, and is willing to put in the work, why should she be displaced by someone younger, less experienced, because the woman was born with a particular quirk of psychic scent? She hasn't long ruled in Caecian, but rule by a Queen hasn't truly helped anyone in Dena Nehele before now, and she doubts they'll soon start.
    • Freeloaders - A lot of people feel like Minerva owes them something because of the Caste she was born into and the free clinic she still runs. It's true that she'll heal anyone who comes to her in need, and she'll even heal most of them for free. But it's not because they have any claim on her, or because she owes it to them. Her need to Heal is irresistible, but she still expects to get something back for it. Her patients can pay in loyalty or marks or political support, but they all pay in the end.
    Fears:
    • Vermin - Minerva trades on being acknowledged as calm, cool, and mature beyond her few years. But, like a child, she's terrified of vermin. Rats and mice and bats and insects, all of them carry disease and all of them figure overlarge in her memories of her early childhood. She associates them with being poor and worthless. When she sees them, she shields instantly.
    • How far she could go - Not in society, no, Minerva's not afraid of the meteoric heights she intends to reach. Minerva fears discovering what her limits are, and fears that they're not far enough. It is believable to her that she might one day have to arrange for the death of a Queen to maintain what control she has or to gain more, and Minerva doesn't know if she's cold or cruel enough to do it. In addition, the call of her Caste is strong; it has, on occasion, led her away from the path that leads to power. It is her justification for power, but it is also the source of most of her distractions. If she could cut out the part of her that was a Healer and pull it back on as necessary, she would.
    • Committing a social misstep - Minerva's young, and she's no Queen, so how could she maintain her power base if she was seen to be young? Minerva has spent so much effort desexing herself, divorcing herself from the physical reality of being too young for this, that she actively dreads the day she puts one foot outside of line. She feels she cannot stop calculating and just be without proving herself unworthy of the title she has rightfully stolen. In addition, this sort of misstep can occur at any time, at any place, just because Minerva stops thinking for ten seconds. Her fear is a danger to her and to her goals, and she despises it. Minerva's come a long way from being the unwanted spawn of a seamstress, but the whole act is balanced on the edge of an edge, on half a tiptoe at the last heartbeat of a cliff. She's been very very lucky so far that no one has found her center of gravity and tipped her over. Her goals now are to consolidate her power in herself before Lady Rilandra Vlas's ward comes for her Caecian. One fuckup, one mistake, and Minerva will be lost.
    Craft Strengths:
    • Bone Shaping - Minerva got her start as a healer to aristos. That meant she got a lot of requests that weren't exactly needful. What started life as a specialization in essentially plastic surgery has become her go-to for fixing egregious birth defects such as club foot and cleft palate. Where children are born with defects inimical to life, Minerva is there to fix what she can. She is also fairly good at shaping bones on landen.
    • Reading Psychic Scents - Minerva has a reputation for being canny. No, she's just got a good psychic nose. She is particularly good at discerning when someone's lying to her; after years of practice, she can even tell the difference between a black lie and a lie of omission. It's a useful diagnostic tool, but its main purpose has been to ferret out exactly who has the good blackmail material.
    Craft Weaknesses:
    • Reservoir management - For whatever reason, Minerva has a very poor sense of how much power she has at hand. She is constantly expending Craft--maintaining temperature spells, reading psychic scents--and has an incredibly noticeable psychic scent because of it. This greatly inhibits her ability to Heal greater injuries; she has to prepare for a great deal of her time and consciously focus on letting her power regenerate. She tends to only notice that she's out of power when she's literally drained her Opal to drops, which happens a lot more often than one would expect.
    • Fine telekinetic craft - Minerva is not skilled with operating things with her mind. She can do basic, obvious summonings-to-hand, or float something across the room, but when it comes to delicate surgical work she must hold the blade in hand.

    History:
Minerva Tailor is not her mother's only child. In fact, in quick succession after Minerva came Osiri, Anansa, and Oriana. Nile wasn't much of anyone to be able to support so many children, so when Minerva's Healer caste and her Purple Dusk Jewel made her entirely too expensive to keep up with, she was pulled out of the village school and put to work in an aristo house in Sevastopol, the District Seat of Caecian. Minerva, a clever child, was literate and incredibly canny, but her real value was in her Caste and Jewel. Even as a hardly-trained youth, she was worth quite a bit because of her Purple Dusk birthright.

So, Nile got her money to raise the three younger children, and Minerva was put into training and service in the home of Ilie Funar. Prince Funar was an old man, getting on in years, and his children were all grown and moved out. Minerva, the only young person in a house full of grown adults, occupied a strange place. More than a servant, but less than an aristo daughter herself, she was forced to learn to rapidly adjust to the expectations of others depending on the environment in which she ended up on a certain day. One moment, she could be darning socks (a skill learned in her mother's shop) and the next pulled forth to emphasize the bounty which Prince Funar had access to. There were few other Healers nearly so Dark in almost the entire Territory, and she was only a child. Minerva's tutor was a trained healer who had descended to the White, and even her services came at a high price.

In another aristo house, Minerva might have had to worry about her virtue, but Prince Funar's hedonism ran in different directions. She was, instead, invited to party after aristo party, even as a girl. Minerva was the jewel of Ilie's faux Court, an art piece, and certainly--so he thought--not clever enough to see things which she oughtn't. Those common types, boasted Prince Funar, wouldn't realize an opportunity if it bit them on the nose; they were born low and they would die low, unless they were uplifted by wiser men. Minerva channeled her anger into carefully, thoughtfully collecting information which she thought would someday be of interest to the Queen of Tulzbruja. Though she was a smart child, these early notes wouldn't prove particularly useful, but they established a habit in Minerva. When she saw something, she wrote it down for later.

When she was twelve, her education in healing required a broader practice body than the elderly Prince or the occasional slip in the kitchens. Prince Funar, seeing his opportunity to raise his social cachet with then-Queen of Tulzbruja Rilandra Vlas, opened a free clinic in Sevastopol. Over the next few years, Lady Vlas would tour the free clinic several times. She never stopped to talk to Minerva long, but what conversations they did have were very enlightening for Minerva, who was working to figure out what she intended to do with all this information she was gathering.

During the next six years, Minerva hardly slept. Her days and nights were full of activity: during the day, she would go to the free clinic for the morning into the early afternoon. She'd take a quick nap and shove a meal into her face, change, and be at some aristo home to help them (for a great deal of money that went straight into Prince Funar's pockets) or to attend their parties as a guest of Prince Funar. The attention that ought to have been given a Queen was given to her, this rarity of a Purple Dusk Healer who would someday wear a Dark Jewel. Prince Funar never let any other aristo house forget exactly what Minerva was or who had snatched her up first, and Minerva never complained about attending the debaucheries or tidying up afterwards.

Though Minerva wasn't ready, Prince Funar forced her to undergo her Offering at eighteen, anticipating at least a Green. Minerva was mature for her age, but she was still unready to confront the Abyss within herself. She descended only to the Opal, unwilling or unable to go any further into the abyss. She felt robbed of the rightful Dark Jewel she ought to have worn. In her anger, she decided that she'd no longer be Prince Funar's toy. The moment she saw an opportunity, she was going to get out and grind him under her heel. For all that he had been kind to her, and she was likely only alive because of his intervention when she was young and her Purple Dusk was new, his greed for social status had harmed Minerva in a way that couldn't be glossed over.

Still, he didn't seem to mind that Minerva descended just to the Opal. She was still one of the Darkest Healers in the territory; Prince Funar only knew of one, and the Red Jeweled Healer wasn't a concern to him. There was no reason that Minerva Tailor couldn't be adopted to the Funar aristo family and then, from there, to a Province Court or even to the Territory Court, if he could leverage his connections there. As for Minerva, she had other ideas...

The clinic in Sevastopol was the only one of its kind in Caecian. It boasted one of the Darkest Healers in the Territory. She saw a lot of important people through her work there: among them were critical members of Tulzbruja's infrastructure. Quirinia Szmytko was one of them. She was a Priestess outside the Court system, reporting to the Priestesshood, but she was strongly connected to the landens of the Territory, and thus a potential powerful ally. They made quick friends, bonding over their shared dislike of the aristo politics that plagued the region. Quirinia had only to point at the obvious nepotism of Sheyla's appointment of her sisters. One obviously walked the Twisted Kingdom, and seemed confused whenever Minerva met with her. The other was just disturbing, though neither Quirinia or Minerva could exactly point to a reason for it. But it was the incredibly unorthodox appointment of Illyana Page as Sheyla Grey's Master of the Guard that got Minerva thinking... there were so many open spaces at the heads of Courts. And though a Warlord Prince or a Black Widow would be a more natural choice to rule, there was nothing that said a Healer couldn't rule.

In fact, why shouldn't a Healer rule? Queens drew males to them, it was true. But Queens were not guaranteed to have the better interests of everyone in mind, as proven by Darcia Glassade's disastrous rule, and by the women in Sheyla's Court who were chosen for their family ties rather than their skills and connection to the District. Maybe Rilandra Vlas could do better at the helm of the Territory; no doubt she would try. But a plurality of voices was more helpful than a singular woman's word.

She'd once told Rilandra Vlas that she intended to be in control. At the time, she'd thought of taking over the aristo house of Funar. No one would dare have scheduled her within an inch of her life if she was a true aristo daughter, but she still would've been under Ilie's thumb. But if a woman could be Master of the Guard, then a Healer could rule.

Minerva spent the next three years collecting her blackmail material, as she ever had since beginning to attend the aristo parties at twelve. She collected important friends, as well: an aristo son, Czernobog Brekker. A Black Widow with a Sapphire descent, Hera, with whom Minerva vaguely sauntered into love. Quirinia used her position as a Priestess in charge of landen outreach Caecian to get Minerva introduced to leaders of landen groups, building her up as something of an advocate for the people on the ground. A local landen landowner named Dionisie call-me-Svarog became a friend of hers as well once she healed his daughter's broken thigh bone. Svarog introduced her to a young Warlord who had lived among them for some time, in hiding from a Shaos contract that had cost him a hand and his mental stability. Phoebus Aegle turned out to be an asset in his own right, because alerting his parents that he was alive and free won her the support of the Aegle family.

Her plan, once it was clear that most of the landen people of Caecian in general and Sevastopol in particular would support her, was to wait for Sheyla Grey to move on. The Queen was ambitious, they all knew it, so she would be actively trying for the Province Seat in Tulzbruja. In the power vacuum, Minerva would step up. The triangle Sheyla had assembled would move on with her, and there were enough people in the existing First Circle who could be made to support Minerva with the right... inspiration... that she was confident in her plan. She had plenty of time to work on her angle of approach, or so she thought.

    Then Sheyla Grey was murdered.

Minerva would've liked more time, but she didn't have it. This was a perfect opening: Sheyla Grey dead, her Steward and her High Healer gone in the chaos, several of her bound males disappeared into the ether as well. She leapt into action, turning her books of information on her former benefactors. To Prince Funar: Do you really think I won't tell Lady Vlas exactly what you've been doing with those Jewelless Blood? To another male: I know about that Myos contract. To another: I saw you with your brother. To Menachem and Aria Aegle: I gave you back your son. As Quirinia, Czernobog, Hera, and Svarog rallied their supporters, Minerva took Sheyla Grey's place. She didn't take the District seat, didn't even move it. She took an office in Sevastopol, and worked from there. It was easy enough to commute to Vaslui when needed, but moving the capital of the District was too much, too soon. Minerva didn't want Riley Vlas looking her way until she was too entrenched to be removed from her place.

She calmed the chaos. Everyone in Sevastopol, no, in Caecian, knew her name; they felt they had the shape of her. She was no Queen, no threat. The best aristo houses in the area fell in behind her. It was an election by acclimation, supported by years of hard work. She was no younger than any Queen who might have taken the role, and older than most. Once Prince Funar got over his shock at being blackmailed by his tame Healer, he was even proud of her for her initiative.

From there, Minerva spent several months putting her back into figuring out a tithe schedule that worked. Each edict she laid down was supported by the Priestesses, landens, and Black Widows in Caecian; the Healers fell into line behind her because there were so few of them, and Minerva had by-far the strongest personality, the strongest connections. Her changes come slowly, but with each one Minerva consolidates her own power base.

There's no way she'll let herself be dethroned by a Queen. Not after all this work.

    Character in Play:
Minerva didn't rule out of the District manor, where Sheyla Grey had lived until just the past spring. Something about that seemed inauspicious, and too grasping besides. Since she had snatched power from the jaws of... whatever... she'd taken an office in Sevastopol proper, the rent paid by a generous donation from Ilie Funar, the aristo who had kept her in indentured servitude for much of her youth. It was four blocks from the free clinic she still ran in the evenings and early mornings, though by now she was too busy to be the only Healer on duty as she had once been. No, the job had been offered to the Yellow witch who had taught Minerva, and the most difficult cases were the ones that Minerva now tended to.

The office suited her and her detached style of rule. There was no Court in Caecian. Such an arrangement would have gone poorly; Healers were not natural centers of the things, and Minerva had no interest in allowing the aristo class to use her as leverage by pretending to serve her.

Instead, Minerva had assembled a council. Hera led the Black Widows of Caecian, had secured the position through hard work and skill over her time there. Phoebus Aegle won her the support of the Aegles, the bookbinders and land-owners from a long time ago. Czernobog was a popular first son whose families kept greenhouses; between the two of them, a sizable agricultural production followed Minerva. Anya Welvert, the ex-wife of the current ruler of Tulzbruja, had mentored her, taught her the ropes. The landen followed Phoebus and Dionisie, and Quirinia brought her the Priestesses. An installed Queen, a foreign Queen, wouldn't have been able to acquire this support. Riley Vlas might have been able to, but her time in Caecian had ended a long, long time ago. Now was Minerva's time to lead. To rule. She knew she could.

Minerva finished tying her hair back. The autumn harvest was coming soon, and she'd be meeting the Queens of Dena Nehele as more than a Healer servant to a hedonistic aristo. They had to listen to her, and work with her to achieve their goals. She had to be ready to explain to Rilandra and her Triangle why, exactly, replacing her with the White-Jeweled Queen in Rilandra's Court was a terrible idea. It had to be worded precisely the correct way, to intimate the threat without stating it outright. I will destroy you if you test me worked with spineless aristos. By all accounts, Rilandra was not spineless.

But Caecian, she told herself, was not a training territory. Caecian needed better. There were districts in Aechia where the aristos ran amuck and did as they pleased, paying tithes directly into the Province coffers while Catina Cosma did... Minerva wasn't sure. Give Sorinna Roman one of those districts. Minerva had earned hers, and she'd do whatever she could to hold on to it.
