Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Mercianna Arcos is, and has always been, a proud woman. Proud of the purity of her bloodline and her standing in the Abyss. Proud of her sophistication and how she’s maintained her beauty over the years. Above all, she is proud of her family for staving off ruin and poverty, shifting its focus, and rebuilding itself. Others would feign humility and thank Mother Night for seeing them through, but Mercianna knows that Mother Night will not forsake her, so her success is preordained. This lends her a confidence that any action she takes is the right action, and that things will turn in her favor no matter how long it takes.

She likes younger men, great sex, and six course meals. There are more prominent families among the aristocracy with more land and riches, but none of their scions can outwork her family. Mercianna is a director and taskmaster, constantly driving others to work toward the ends that she sets. Most people don’t have the ambition or desire to work for what they want most in life, so they’ll accept anything they receive and be satisfied. Why shouldn’t she direct others if they refuse to direct themselves? She’s proven her skill and devotion to herself and those she cares for more than any Queen of plants and dirt.

She's not afraid to get her hands dirty and get down in the mud with her people, but she's a better director than worker. Mercianna considers herself a benevolent mistress, demanding only loyalty and maximum effort from those around her. Her people are educated and they are taught to tend altars and how to seek Mother Night’s grace in all things. She thrives on the mysticism of her caste and has great reverence for the rituals and worship that binds people and communities together. Without her guidance, her servants (never slaves) would be lost and starving in the streets or dead in gutters and stripped of their meager positions by those with less morals. She is a servant in all things and taking people off the streets and into her protection is among the highest services she can provide to Dena Nehele.

She opposes the mixing of blood between races because it dilutes the strengths of each group, leading to confusion, suffering, and ostracism for the children of these unions. Mother Night placed each person in life in the land where they were meant to live and work. If She desired that all Blood share a single origin, it would be so. The mixing of blood between the various Territories shows contempt for Mother Night and her teachings. Her message is ill-received by those who can’t stomach the truth, but people are listening. Changing hearts and minds is hard work, but she’s never shied away from hard work and she will not stop now. If that costs her some friends in the short-term, so be it. Her faith is stronger than any opinion formed against her.

Deep down, Mercianna knows that she’s turned the corner of her life and is approaching the endgame that will determine what kind of Territory is passed on to her niece. She’s running out of time to cement her legacy and find a worthy heir. Before the Decimation, she contented herself with giving her niece, Stana, every advantage and comfort available. Now Mercianna sees a chance to shape Dena Nehele’s future for generations to come. When she returns to the Darkness, she will tell Mother Night that she did all she could to leave Dena Nehele better than she found it.

Likes:

  • 1. Control: Mercianna must have complete dominion over every facet of her life and the people in it. Her family endures because of her hard work and sacrifice; they, in turn, will sacrifice their petty desires and time-wasting activities to help her build something of value. Her servants receive the blessings of her protection and the privileges of working for her, so no task is beyond them. Mercianna’s vision inspires them to greater achievement if they will just submit to her desires. And if they won’t, the ring and collar will show them their errors.

  • 2. Anya Welvert: While Mercianna has few friendships with other women, she considers Anya a friend. The Black Widow’s insight is uncanny and her ambition and drive matches Mercianna’s own. The Twisted Kingdom is another window into the Darkness, so Mercianna considers the unease she sometimes feels in Anya’s presence another way that Mother Night speaks to her.

  • 3. Gatherings: Mercianna loves all kinds of ceremonies and bringing people together for the purpose of worship, discussion, or simple merry-making. Tradition binds families and communities while helping to identify outsiders. People look to the Conclave for guidance on living their best lives; Mercianna is happy to educate them while showing them who to blame for the problems that they face.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Miscegenation: The long-lived and the short-lived were never, ever, meant to mix bloodlines. Nor were the Blood and the Landen. The children of such unions remain outsiders in their communities, never fully integrating with one people or the other. Mercianna sees this clearly, so why can’t others? Her brother sired a half-breed with a long-lived woman and didn’t live long enough to see her reach adulthood. Even the mixing of short-lived races grates on her nerves, and Mercianna believes the Decimation a sign of Mother Night's displeasure at the mixing of peoples that She did not intend to interact.

  • 2. The Mercer Family: Mercianna despises the entire Mercer line. Meredith Mercer was a self-righteous bitch who actively worked against Mercianna’s attempts to increase her status in the Conclave. They have choice tracts that have been maintained and cared for while others struggle. They pretend at virtue while milking their connections to the Territory Court to raise their status. Meredith is dead but her son, Jeremiah, now controls the family’s fortunes. Mercianna wants to annihilate the Black Widow Warlord Prince and end his family's influence for all time.

  • 3. The Conclave: Mercianna nurses a grudge against the Conclave for not raising her to the status that she believes she’s due. She’s been passed over for higher positions and duties more than once in favor of Priestesses who are younger, or prettier, or kinder. It pisses her off. While she’ll turn up at mandatory events, she finds reasons to avoid working with many of her fellow Priestesses. She refuses to train her next supervisor.

    Fears:

  • 1. End of Slavery: The Territory Court’s edict abolishing slavery causes Mercianna constant worry. While her coffers are long full from her family’s import business, slavery is the foundation of their fortune. Not only that, but she’s good at it. Now Rilandra Vlas wants to take it all away with an edict from on high. Mercianna dreads the idea of her personal fortune being diminished by the loss of her livelihood.

  • 2. Losing Charles: Charles and Mercianna were made for each other. They both crave power and control. Her relationship with the Warlord Prince is the only thing that makes her regret her age; she would give him children if she could. While she keeps her jealous tendencies mostly under wraps, she still purchases the latest skin care, sees a Healer, and is obsessive about her diet in order to keep him coming back to her bed.

  • 3. The Shaos Guild: The Jacks are numerous but avoidable. The Myos Guild is terrifying but most can’t afford them. The Shaos Guild, however, scares Mercianna because they can't be prepared for. They infiltrate businesses, communities, and congregations to steal secrets, people, and even the very truth that Mercianna works to conceal. The wrong information in the right hands will destroy everything she's worked to build.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Connecting with the Darkness: Born to be served, the service required of a Priestess did not come easily to Mercianna until the first time that she plunged into the Abyss. Her purpose is to help others understand their place in the Darkness. While connected, she is the Darkness incarnate. Those under her aegis know it as she takes from them to fuel herself, siphoning away their energy just as easily as she can give it to them. Succor or hindrance, it all derives from her, and those that she attends to know it in their depths of their soul.

  • 2. Managing Ring/Collars of Obedience: For all her poise and grace, the persona presented to the Courts, Mercianna is a true slave driver. Only the best sex can match the euphoria she derives from commanding others with her control rings, using them to know her servants at their deepest level. She demands the best from herself, and even more from those under her command. Mercianna's favorite thing to do is show her servants just how wrong they are: they do have more to give. She can wring every last drop of sweat and energy from those she controls, pushing and working them longer than they might otherwise be able to do on their own. It does not matter that eventually they'll collapse, only that they collapse after their labors are done and she is satisfied.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Defensive Shielding: Mercianna’s shields are spotty at best. Too strong in some places and nonexistent in others, she learned quickly that having capable retainers who can shield her was a good substitute for being unable to do it properly herself. She congratulates herself for successfully outsourcing her self-defense.

  • 2. Communion with the Darkness: Mercianna loves her rituals, perhaps too much. While she can lead others into the Darkness, she requires a precise set of rote steps that must be performed in the same order, every single time. This isn't a fast process; her supplicants know that asking her to help them refill their jewels is both high ceremony and time-sink and must adjust their schedules accordingly.

    History:

Mercianna Arcos is the eldest of the three children born to Eugen and Miruna Arcos. Miruna was a temple Priestess in northern Tulzbruja Province who often worked with the sick and needy. Eugen came from a family of lumbermen who owned a mill on the outskirts of town. Mercianna demanded their attention from the moment she entered the world, though learning about Mother Night and the Darkness from her mother instilled piety in her at an early age. She was five when her brother Nicolae joined the family and seven when her brother Timotei arrived. But Timotei’s birth took a toll on Miruna's body and she returned to the Darkness hours after his birth. Her mother's death strained the relationship between Mercianna and her father for many years and soured her relationship with her brothers as well. She tried to be their mother, rather than their sister, leading to Nicolae's constant defiance of her wishes and Timotei's sullen deference to her desires.

After receiving her Blood Opal, Mercianna spent as much time as she could among the Priestesses of the local temple. It was during this time that she first encountered Meredith Mercer, another young Priestess of aristo blood. The dislike between the women was immediate and their attempts to outshine each other made for stories still told among their contemporaries in the Conclave. Mercianna felt that she saw Meredith’s heart more clearly than their instructors and that Meredith was the most spiteful and vindictive person in the Conclave, hiding behind a veneer of righteousness and service and everyone took her at face value.

By the time she obtained her Sapphire, Mercianna’s reputation had suffered for her rivalry with Meredith. While her instructors agreed that she was a capable Priestess and record-keeper, they felt that she lacked the necessary compassion to serve and guide others on their path. For a young woman trying to follow her mother's example, this criticism was hard to take. Meanwhile, Meredith was being showered with praise and invitations to join Courts across the Territory. Feeling disrespected by her sisters in faith, Mercianna returned home to build her family’s business. But her father’s poor business decisions damaged the family’s wealth.

She also learned that her father’s decades-long affair with his assistant, Estera Lascar, resulted in a daughter that he planned to raise alongside his legitimate children. Unwilling to share her home with gutter trash, Mercianna offered Estera a one-hundred thousand marks to leave her father and take the child with her. Eugen fell into depression due to his lover’s abandonment, leaving Mercianna in charge of the family’s remaining money and business.

She worked with her father to shift the family’s focus from lumber to importing and also purchased a slaves from Raej to reduce their expenses. Soon the Arcos family were importing poultry and medicinal herbs for distribution to those who could pay. Mercianna also brought in more slaves to help her renovate their home and make additions. Believing that her family’s newfound success would force the Conclave reconsider her value, Mercianna demanded to be considered as an instructor for incoming Priestesses. She was declined in favor of a younger woman that she'd helped in the past, viewing the move as a fresh rebuke of her talents fueled again by Meredith Mercer's whisper campaign against her.

This time she didn’t have a chance to lament the lost opportunity. Her brother, Nicolae, stole money and several of the family’s ledgers from Mercianna’s safe, seemingly fleeing Dena Nehele. Searching for him lead to an unexpected friendship with Anya Welvert. The Black Widow was instrumental in helping her locate Nicolae, who now lived under the name "Gheorghe Roman" and worked in the court of Rilandra Vlas. Confronting the traitor, Mercianna tried to blackmail him over his involvement in the deaths of Linnea and Andrei Cutrov, prominent winemakers of the Province.

Her offer was simple: return home, submit to her, and she would protect him from retribution.

Nicolae countered by threatening to give copies of the ledgers to her business partners, proving that Mercianna was a slaver. While slavery wasn’t illegal in Dena Nehele, her reputation and business would suffer. If enough people stopped working with her, the Arcos family would have to leave Dena Nehele and the Conclave would not install her as a member in good standing. Mercianna seethed as her brother walked away that night, thinking he’d won. She spent seven months seeking a way to bend him to her will. When she saw that she had no other choice, she paid the Myos Guild to murder him.

Months after Gheorghe Roman’s death, Mercianna learned that he’d fathered a daughter on a visiting Priestess from Dhemlan eight years prior. That daughter, Sorinna, now lived as a Ward of Rilandra Vlas’s Province Court in Sevastopol. The young woman represents an impurity in her family’s bloodline and Mercianna is determined to control or remove her.

Twelve years have passed since her brother’s death and Mercianna believes that Dena Nehele is in a precarious place. Rilandra Vlas rules the Territory with Sorinna Roman as a possible heir. Meredith Mercer is dead but her son, Jeremiah, controls the family's lands and wealth. She survived the Decimation with her jewels intact only to learn that slavery is being outlawed. Knowing that her fortune will suffer if she submits, Mercianna seeks a way to avoid compliance and remove her enemies. For now, she's forced Timotei into working for her and helping her maintain the family's wealth and reputation at all costs. She has enslaved her half-sister, Diona, into managing her household and providing her an heir by bearing the daughter of her lover, Charles Keyes.

Her niece, Stana, is a young Priestess wearing the Opal and Mercianna plans to train her personally to give her the life that she deserves.

    Character in Play:

    Tulzbruja Province- Summer 181 AP

Mercianna Arcos did not, usually, get drunk. The momentary buzz was never worth the next day’s ill effects. Her father numbed his own pain with drink for years after her mother died and Mercianna  swore never to repeat his mistakes. But now rain drummed on the rooftop of her home and Mercianna stared at the bottle of Tulzbruja Red before her like it held all of the answers to her problems. It didn’t but she told herself that one drink would calm her nerves enough to be a proper host.

Three glasses later, she was still searching for that one drink.

Trembling hands held her fourth glass of wine as she waited for her guest to arrive. She sat in her kitchen, the oppressive silence reminding her of the family crypt. Her home was filled with the ghosts of lost family and broken relationships, so maybe it was fitting that she’d asked her guest to join her here tonight. If she died tonight, then let it be in the house where her mother returned to the Darkness. Timotei was asleep upstairs; Diona and the rest of her servants were in their quarters on the edge of the property. They wouldn't be back this evening on pain of punishment. Mercianna flexed her hand, the weight of the control rings on her slender fingers buoying her confidence. This was her home and she was in control here. Her hand still trembled but her nerves were settling. Perhaps her guest wouldn’t show tonight. Then she could go to bed and pretend for another day that she hadn't just paid someone to tear her family apart.

You shouldn't drink that swill, Lady. It’ll kill you.

Mercianna dropped her wine glass and yelped in surprise. Crimson liquid soaked the front of her gray nightgown but the glass never hit the floor. It slowed and hovered an inch above the cold tile before rising to land lightly on the granite countertop. Her guest had arrived. She turned toward him.

The Myos stood several feet away, directly in front of the glass doors that lead to the balcony. He was clad in black from head-to-toe, and Mercianna’s first thought was that the mode of dress was overly dramatic. The feathers from a quiver of arrows were visible over his right shoulder. The Priestess descended into her Sapphire as she watched him, extending her senses to locate anything that would identify the killer she’d hired outside of his guise.

She found no scent, psychic or otherwise, of his caste. She sensed no jewels and that terrified her more than the lack of scent. Few people evaded her senses so completely, meaning that her guest was either skilled at hiding himself (a useful skill) or stood deeper than her in the Abyss. She’d made a mistake receiving him here. For all she knew, Nicolae had paid him and sent him back to kill her.

The Myos’ hand shot forth as lightning flashed behind him. The glint of metal was the only warning that Mercianna had. Reflex brought her hands out before her, summoning a defensive shield to ward off the projectile.

The silver ring struck her in the chest and clattered to the floor.

She glared at the assassin. “Was that fucking necessary?

    No response.

She knelt to pick up the ring, keeping her eyes on the assassin the whole time. Standing again, she spared a glance at the bloodstained trinket. She remembered the day her father had given Nicolae this ring. He’d never taken it off. She’d half-expected that he’d destroyed it.

    So it’s done?

    You asked for proof.

Mercianna breathed out through her nose. She called in the satchel and tossed it across the distance to her guest. It stopped in mid-air and then slowly floated its way into his hand. He vanished it and then raised his other hand. Shards of Yellow and Tiger Eye jewels fell to the floor, clinking on the tile.

This contract is fulfilled.” the Myos said, turning to go.

Not going to count your money?

The Myos stopped and turned his hooded head to look over his shoulder. “If you’ve shorted me even one mark, everyone in this house will join Prince Roman.

Mercianna bristled at that name. She swallowed the lump in her throat, but it set in her stomach like a stone. The Myos walked through the double doors and vanished into the rainy night, leaving her alone.

She whirled, hands grasping for the bottle of wine and emptied the remains into her glass. She downed it in several gulps, but it it was no use. Her hands shook so badly that she lost control of the glass. It shattered on the kitchen floor, mixing with the remains of Prince Roman's jewels. She sat down heavily, hating herself for the tears streaming down her face. Why was she crying? She won. Her secrets were safe. She won. He couldn't hurt her anymore.

Why did she still feel afraid?
