With the full force of the Guilds at her back, Rilandra Vlas seized the Territory Throne of Dena Nehele. The common born Province Queen now owes allegiance to the Master of the Guilds for his assistance in both securing the throne and securing Darcia Glassade's continual safety. Trapped between the demands of the Guilds and the demands of the Aristos, Riley is struggling to rule, finding the palace more of a cage than she could have dreamed possible.

The Basics

Character Name: Menachem Aegle
Nicknames: Mendel
Age and Birth Year: 58 / b. 135 AP
Race: Short Lived
Caste: Prince
Birth Territory: Dena Nehele
Home Territory: Dena Nehele

Birthright Jewel: uncut Summer Sky (Jewels rolled on Phoebus's sheet.)
Offering Jewel: cut Green

Role: Patriarch
Faction: Aegle Family

Appearance

Play By: Jeff Goldblum
Distinguishing Features: Salt and pepper hair, with a very distinguished and well-trimmed beard and mustache. Mendel owns and wears a variety of different pairs of spectacles (he needs them to see) and is always sharply-dressed in suits befitting a man of his position.

Personality

Personality: Menachem Aegle takes the burden of the aristocracy seriously. He is fully cognizant that his own position is due to a great deal of luck and fortunate circumstances - he could have just as easily been born one of the serfs who rent his family’s land. He is a noted philanthropist and believes wholeheartedly that the Aristo class must serve the common good - under his steady hand, the Aegles have risen in social prominence, and their names grace the donors lists for clinics and cultural institutions.

He is devoted to his family. He loves his children, his wife, his niece, and even his sister (though she scares him). He is, however, constantly cognizant of the heavy legacy he has inherited and the importance of giving the next generation something to carry on. He has a tendency to prioritize the needs of the family as a whole over what might be best for individuals - most notably in his handling of his son Phoebus’s kidnapping. True to his caste, he tends to weigh situations carefully before acting, and he is reluctant to stray from his decisions until he has had an opportunity to fully reevaluate his path.

In addition to philanthropy, Menachem has cultivated a reputation as a reformer. He is devoted to his family’s legacy, and he sees part of his responsibility as changing the parts he disagrees with. He would like to see the Licht line ended - it has only ever existed to excuse his ancestors’ philandering, and he sees no reason for there to be an entire side of the family whose activities are kept secret from the main line. He is also outspoken in his criticisms of injustice and corruption - he stands in open opposition of the Territory Court and Queen Rilandra Vlas, who he considers to have stolen his daughter (a stunningly tactless decision, in his opinion).

Lastly, he is a closet romantic, prone to surprising his wife with flowers and elaborate displays of affection. They were kept apart for years by the demands of the guildsmen who kidnapped their son, and he is intent on making up for lost time.

Likes:
  • 1 - Business There is a pleasing element to a well-brokered deal or a shipment going out on time, a comforting rhythm that assures Menachem that all is going according to plan. Under his hand, the family's publishing empire has expanded its trade across Terreille and their lands have thrived. He has found a sphere of influence where he excels, and having settled there, sees no reason to try his hand at anything new.
  • 2 - His Family The Aegles (and their immediate Licht suborns) have always been insular, and Menachem's upbringing continued the trend. He is loyal to his house, his sister, his wife, and his legacy before anything else. This has, of course, forced him to make difficult decisions - he will always regret allowing his son to spend nearly a decade in the hands of kidnappers, but it was necessary to keep his daughters safe. He is happiest at home, surrounded by those dearest to him, and is distressed by the Aegles' complicated current state of affairs.
  • 3 - Knowledge Menachem prides himself on being well-educated and well-informed. He curates a number of quarterly journals for the Aegles' publishing business, and he oversees the ones he doesn't run directly. He is well-versed in a variety of topics, from art to culture to natural sciences, and enjoys meeting with other likeminded individuals to discuss and exchange wisdom.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 - Violence A man of good breeding and refinement, Menachem considers himself above petty brawls and even things like dueling. Only morons settle arguments with fisticuffs, and if you strike the first blow against your adversary you have only been brought down to their level. Though he is not a pacifist, per se, Menachem prefers to wage his battles in ways more befitting of his standing - namely, with words.
  • 2 - Queen Rilandra Vlas Menachem's family was ripped apart by Dena Nehele's lawless guilds long before Riley came to power, but the new Queen certainly hasn't helped. The Aegles have long had a reputation as progressives, involved as they are in the trade and publication of information, and Menachem is critical of the ruling government. He views Riley as too quick to take credit for accomplishments she has partial claim to at best and too willing to let her supporters run roughshod over the territory. Bidea is a cesspit and a spectacle - and that's to say nothing about what he views as nothing less than the court-sanctioned abduction of his daughter.
  • 3 - Attacks on his Pride As one would expect of any man his caste and social standing, Menachem does not suffer indignities lightly. He has suffered a number of setbacks and misfortunes involving his children, but will not tolerate anyone saying that it bodes badly for his house or his management of it. He is outspoken in criticizing his critics and has difficulty putting disagreements behind him.

    Fears:
  • 1 - The Fall of the Aegles The Aegles have endured countless rough periods in Dena Nehele's long history, but the latest bout of troubles threatens their existence. Menachem's eldest daughter and intended heir, Liora, was rendered vegetative by the Decimation. His son, Phoebus, is still recovering from the harm he suffered at the hands of his kidnappers and missed nine years of crucial educational instruction. The territory court has laid claim to his younger daughter, Orianna, and her Queen caste makes her unsuitable to inherit the family seat, anyway. Menachem is fully aware that his house's fate is in question, and the next few years will be crucial for securing its future.
  • 2 - Raziel's Ambition Menachem and his sister Raziel both learned well the lessons set out for them by their father, but Raziel took to her role with far more zeal. It's customary for the Aegles not to know everything the Lichts do in service to their shared line - but Menachem has gleaned some hints of her wide-reaching schemes. (How could he have not noticed how she has worked to unbalance their corporate rivals, the Atreides?) Menachem knows that should he stand in the way of what Raziel thinks is best for the line, she will not hesitate to destroy him.
  • 3 - Harm coming to Aria Menachem lost his first wife, Jayne, long before her time - she died as Liora was born. He was nervous through both of Aria's two previous pregnancies and this third has him on particular edge - they did not plan this child, and at forty-two, Aria is... old for it. Thoughts of complications occupy his idle moments, and he does not foresee himself resting easy any time soon.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Wardcraft - The Aegle family has long been known for their skill with security spells, and Menachem is no exception. He is talented in the drawing and maintaining of protective wards and boundaries, even over large areas such as the perimeter of his family's estate.
  • 2. Contracts - Working in publishing as he does, Menachem is very interested in the rules governing proprietary information. He is very skilled in contract craft, especially copyright law, but he also has an interest in fairness - writers are keen to sign with the Aegles because they know they'll be getting a good deal and their work will be protected against thieves.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Seduction Craft - He's so bad at it. It actively harms his attempts at wooing. He tried it once on Aria and she threatened to divorce him. (Luckily, he has a great personality).
  • 2. Witchfire - Honestly, it's very embarrassing to be so bad at something so basic. Menachem goes out of his way to avoid using witchfire or finding himself in a situation where he might need it. While he can manage a small globe for a brief amount of time - feeling around for his slippers in a dark bedroom, for instance - anything more than that simply sputters and dies.

Daughter: Orianna Aegle, birthright Tiger Eye Queen, b. 180 AP

Niece: Asimov Licht, birthright Green Priestess, b. 175 AP

    History:

For as long as anyone can recall, the Aegle family has been split into high and lowborn branches. The highborn branch bears the family name and tends to their above-the-boards business overseeing Dena Nehele's largest publishing house. The lowborn branch, newly-bastardized in each generation, is the highborn's left hand, managing the company's day-to-day minutiae, resolving disputes and making certain everything operates as a well-oiled printing press ought to. The Aegles are one of Dena Nehele's oldest Aristo families. Through the Lichts, they have married into nearly every other.

Menachem Aegle is his father's only legitimate child, fulfilling the highborn side of the line. His half-sister Raziel, five years his junior, fulfills the lowborn. Their father Alter Aegle doted on both his children not equally, but equitably, making certain they both knew their designated roles in the family business. Menachem was educated first by a private tutor and then at one of Bidea's finest finishing schools.

By the time he made his offering at nineteen, his father judged him ready to start assisting in the day-to-day operations of the publishing house. Three years later, when Menachem was twenty-two and Raziel just seventeen, their father dropped dead of a heart attack (at a formal banquet, no less), and the siblings quickly assumed the roles always meant for them. The rather public manner of their father's death left the pair performing damage control right from the very start, and though they had always been close, they emerged from the experience bonded by fire.

Menachem's mother Patricia still lived, but was happy to retire and take a hands-off approach to her late husband's empire, including matters traditional for a Dena Nehelese matriarch. Raziel took it upon herself to arrange a marriage for her brother, matching him with Jayne Albu, daughter of a neighboring Aristo house and heiress to a marble quarry fortune. The two hit it off and wed in 158 AP, but their happiness was short-lived - their only child, a daughter, Liora, was born at the start of 160 AP, but Jayne died of complications just two days later.

Menachem was slow to recover from his grief. He spent eight years devoted to his daughter and to the family business, while speculation over who might eventually win his heart ran rampant. He was, for a time, Caecian's most eligible bachelor. Then, in 168, a long-time business associate from Pruul introduced Menachem to his daughter, Aria Al-Tair - and despite their age difference, they were immediately smitten with each other. Raziel pushed for Menachem to have a bastard with the woman and secure the Licht line's future - instead, he married her, and they welcomed a son, Phoebus, in 169 AP. (Raziel had a daughter, Asimov, in 175, frustrated by Menachem's refusal to have a bastard of his own despite family tradition dictating the necessity.)

In 180 AP, Menachem and Aria welcomed their second child together, their daughter Orianna. She was the first Queen born in her family in generations, and the the Aegles' top priority immediately became protecting her. They were successful in their efforts, but while their focus was on their daughter, Shaos guildsmen took Phoebus hostage in 184 AP, demanding that Orianna and Aria leave the territory to prevent further harm from coming to him. Though the Aegles complied with the kidnappers' demands, Phoebus was never released, though for a time they received grisly reminders of his captivity - his right hand, delivered in pieces. After a certain point, even that contact stopped, and the family stopped receiving any contact from Phoebus's kidnappers at all.

Rilandra Vlas's assumption of the throne was initially a welcome change of pace - she ended Queen contracts, meaning Aria and Orianna could return from Pruul. Shortly after, an upstart young Healer named Minerva Tailor contacted Menachem to return Phoebus to the family, though much worse for the wear. Things briefly seemed to be looking up!

And then, Queen Vlas demanded that Orianna be made a ward of the territory court. Menachem was powerless in the face of such a demand, but Raziel suggested her daughter, Asimov, be sent as well, to learn and to protect her cousin. Upset as he was to see his family separated once more, Menachem agreed to the plan - though not without notable grousing.

Things did not settle down after that. At the start of the summer of 193 AP, Aria confided that she was pregnant again. Some months later, the Decimation struck Dena Nehele, and Liora lost both her Jewels as well as her mind, leaving Menachem without a suitable heir. He is only now trying to get his bearings in a changed world and forge a path forward - one that will see his Aristo house strengthened and not destroyed.

    Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play: Menachem rose early and walked down to the bottom of the lane. There was a row of some ten buildings there, little apartments tucked up above shops that served the surrounding farmland. He picked up some fresh cream and cheese from the dairy, checked in on the bakery and the weaver, picked up a newspaper, and bought some roses for Aria.

When he arrived back at the manor, he greeted the maid sweeping the entryway. In the kitchen, he chatted with the cook while he waited for the usual breakfast cart to be ready - pastries, cut fruit, coffee for himself and chai for Aria (she’d made certain all the staff knew how to make it in the proper Pruulian style). He found a vase for the flowers, nestled them among the breakfast dishes, walked the cart up to their bedroom himself, unashamed to be falling back into old patterns. The household staff had a saying on the matter - the surest sign that Lady Aegle was pregnant was that Menachem was bringing her breakfast in bed.

Aria was still curled up beneath the coverlet when he arrived back in their room, and Menachem parked the cart and went to wake her - he brushed her auburn hair back from her face and leaned down to give her a kiss. She opened one eye. “Morning, love,” he murmured. “There’s tea and breakfast and some of that cheese you like.”

“Is there really,” she said, sitting up. “What time is it?”

“Not late,” he said, passing her her dressing gown as she gestured for it. Aria pulled it on over her nightgown and belted it loosely above her belly. Menachem paused for a moment, regarding her mostly with love but also some apprehension. Was she carrying smaller this time, or was he just paranoid?

“Still,” said Aria, crossing the room ahead of him. “You’ve already had time to go to the village and back…”

“I walk fast,” Menachem shrugged. “Long legs. Don’t worry about it, love.”
