Distinguishing Features:

Maseo’s black hair is trimmed in the style of Dena Nehelian males. His eyes are always focused directly on the person he’s speaking to, looking through them even as he looks at them. He is in prime physical shape for his age, though his body is marked with healed-over scars. Maseo’s affects perfect posture when standing or sitting, making him seem taller than his standard six-foot-height. On the rare occasions that he genuinely smiles, the expression looks foreign upon his face as though he only recently learned how.

Personality

Personality:

Maseo no Shingetsu considers his true face a mask that advances his aims and brings him one step closer to his goals each time he dons it. To outsiders (all non-Taceans) Maseo is the model of a Blood aristo, violence and power given form, cloaked in a veneer of nobility and restraint. He is unfailingly polite and civil at all times, leaning on Protocol to guide his actions. Every action and word is crafted to elicit a particular response from the people around him. Even when he appears to act spontaneously, he is plotting the next move to secure the outcome he desires. Maseo is a Tacean, descended from one of the four great houses (the greatest, in his mind) of his homeland and a scion of a goddess from a time long past. This grants him a superiority and a strength of mind that is more than mere belief; it is iron-clad fact that his actions will bear out in due time. Other men can talk about their accomplishments or crow about their success if they choose. Maseo has no need.

If you must tell others that you are superior, then you aren’t.

Maseo’s life is guided by the concepts of keeping and saving face. Disagreements in public are politely addressed only if the need is immediate; otherwise, it can be discussed privately. In private, he lays out his points with logic and calm, refusing to let himself be ruffled by ego or anger.

Maseo strives for reflection and deep thought while resisting the temptation to destroy those who offend him and dismantle their lives. Violence, intimidation, and murder are natural weapons in his arsenal to be enjoyed in the process of achieving his goals. When the time for violence and destruction ends, however, those weapons are set aside until required once more. His ferocity in combat might fool others into mistaking him for a Warlord Prince, but he doesn’t reach the depth of icy fury of that higher caste. To an outsider, Maseo rises to the Killing Edge without warning, commits an act of stunning brutality, then returns to rational discourse without pause.

In private, Maseo relaxes his grip upon Protocol to indulge himself in life’s pleasures. He loves the feel of silk on his skin, or the touch of a lover's fingertips over the flat planes of his body. For Maseo, hunger is twice as sharp and going too long without a lover tests his his ability to maintain his composure and obey Protocol. A good meal, a righteous kill, and mind-blowing sex break through the dammed up emotions that Maseo hides on a daily basis and allow him a few moments of true peace. It never lasts, but Maseo enjoys the sensation enough to continue seeking his personal enlightenment.

Years of geisha training instilled in Maseo a love for the violin. If he’d stayed in Tacea, he might have been a member of an orchestra or found honor in a Court setting. Unfortunately, Maseo hates the idea that being male entitles him to serve for the whole of his life when he knows that he is meant for more. The quiet, yet pervasive disdain in his homeland for a male partaking in the arts drove Maseo to study business, providing the gateway that lead him into crime. Even now, the idea that he is merely a servant because a Queen is present rankles Maseo to his core.

When acting as the head of the White Lotus Trading Company, his family business, and the Lotus Clan, his criminal enterprise, Maseo is most alive and assured of his personal power and ability. His legal business would be accorded some respect in his homeland, but his short time in the wider realm of Terreille has proven that there’s an untapped market for the goods and services his organizations provide. Tea, herbs, and spices bring in money hand over fist White Lotus Trading, while gambling, slavery, drugs, and extortion bolster the reputation of the Lotus Clan and unite young men and women of all who want better lives for themselves beneath a banner that won’t treat them as second-class citizens.

His own.

In Tacea, his destiny meant following tradition to serve his family and accepting whatever life handed him. Now that he's his own man, he can order his life as he chooses. Money makes the world turn and makes equals out of the nobility and the working man. His tithes pad his family’s coffers while Maseo builds his organization based on merit and skill rather than gender and caste. Honor has its place and it works for those people. But there must also exist people who eschew honor so that others may keep theirs.

Honor and success sometimes work at cross-purposes. Honorable suicide is still suicide. Keeping one's honor at the cost of one's life is a fool's bargain in Maseo's eyes.

Maseo prides himself on knowing a good bargain.

Likes:

  • 1. Gaining Influence: Satisfied customers recommend their friends. When Maseo and his people succeed in their given tasks and satisfy those who use their services, their reach increases and more people want to work with them. Maseo works toward the day that his influence stretches from Tacea to Hayll and all places in between. To that end, he works tirelessly to learn the ways of the Outsiders, their cultures, their likes and their dislikes. Once they are comfortable with him, they’ll have no qualms about working with him.

  • 2. Raej: This strip of desert sits in the center of Terreille exerts influence above its weight due to its possession of the last active Dark Gate in the Light Realm. From here, he has access to Dhemlan, Chaillot, Pruul and Askavi, as well as his homeland of Tacea. Maseo could not have asked for a better place to base his operations and the people have been (mostly) welcoming. Maseo loves the desert heat, the river, and the various foods he’s enjoyed since arriving.

  • 3. Violence: Breaking bones, spilling blood, and ending lives gives Maseo both a sense of peace and a measure of his mortality. He doesn’t leap into combat with obviously superior foes without forethought and preparation, but he also does not back down from violence when it is offered to him. Making a deal with someone is preferable to killing them, because death steals potential resources.

But when someone won’t see reason, it’s better to return them to Mother Night and move forward.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Clan Izayoi: The Izayoi have been rivals of his family for generations, staunchly refusing to grant the Shingetsu the respect they deserve. Discovery of the clan's activities by a member of Clan Izayoi lead to Maseo murdering a young Warlord to cover his tracks, only to be captured by his older brother. This earned the ire of the Izayoi Clan, who demand a Price against him when he is found.

  • 2.Tacea’s Culture: Maseo hates the idea that his contributions to society are expected while anything that a woman does is blessed and worthy of adoration. He murdered two women who came after him and he is the one exiled because they were worth more. The wider world has shown him men in positions of power who rule just as well, if not better, than females. Tacea’s clinging to tradition, especially with their lands damaged by the volcanoes, seems pointless.

  • 3.Lack of discipline: Individuals who lose control at the slightest provocation cannot be trusted to serve and can be manipulated with ease. Achieving his goals requires daily interaction with people who hold no concept of keeping or saving face in their actions, so Maseo must bear their presence while he works. Someday, he hopes to be a position where he can surround himself only with people who hold the strongest control over their emotions and thoughts.

    Fears:

  • 1.The Queen Bond: Tacea’s culture exalts the feminine and limits men to roles of service in their name. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the bond between Queens and their males. Maseo did not find his Queen in Tacea and he is glad for it. Unfortunately, the wider world multiplies the chances that his Queen is still out there, waiting to catch his eyes from across a crowded room and snare him for the rest of his life. Service to a Queen would force him to put another’s desires and goals ahead of his own. To Maseo, this is unacceptable.

  • 2. Assassination: Maseo left Tacea to avoid a Price that was likely to end in death for him. Terreille is not vast enough to protect him from the vengeance of Tacea's ruling clans. The growing unrest in Raej between Blood and Landen (along with the number of transient visitors) would make a perfect backdrop for his untimely death. Maseo works to ingratiate himself to the Courts and build his organization, but he can never, ever consider himself safe or untouchable. The right price can buy even a friend's loyalty, so Maseo's paranoia remains at an all-time high.

  • 3. His mysterious benefactor: By all rights, Maseo should be dead. The Izayoi will not stop until he pays a Price for the deaths of their family members and he cannot return home unless a different Queen ascends the throne. They’d planned to execute him to settle the blood debt, but the night before his assassination he was set free and provided an escape route and passage on a ship leaving Tacea. He was also granted money and merchandise to create a business in Raej. One day someone will come looking for a return on their investment; even now, Maseo receives "requests" and directions on who to help or befriend. Someone unafraid to cross the Dragon Queen of Tacea is not a person to make an enemy of...but Maseo won't remain a servant forever, either.

To that end, he is building his organization quickly and quietly to put as many layers of protection between himself and his “savior” as possible.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Advanced Item Enhancement: Maseo can channel his Craft through a weapon without concentration, increasing its durability and its keen edge. Blades so enchanted are capable of cutting through shields and weapons (and resisting attacks from) less than the Green with disturbing ease. Shields of darker strength (Green & Sapphire) can withstand the bite of Maseo’s blade, though he may compromise them with repeated attacks and effort. The darkest shields (Red and below) function as normal.

  • 2. Lightness Craft: Most combat styles believe in moving forward or backward, in giving or gaining ground. Recognizing this, Maseo has adapted his family’s craft to allow him to adjust his personal gravity and cling to a wall or ceiling, moving along or remaining on it for a given duration. He also uses this craft to sit upon the ceiling or wall of his office when he meditates.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Death Spells: Use of this Craft might save Maseo time when he needs to end a life without touching his opponent. Unfortunately, his attempts to use it have met with utter failure. He attempted a Death Spell against an enemy once, while sight shielded, hoping that he could kill his enemy silently and move on unseen. Instead, it seemed to alert his enemy to his exact position, forcing the fight that Maseo had been trying to avoid.

  • 2. Sending Psychic Threads: Maseo prefers verbal speech whenever possible because of his issue with psychic threads. He receives them without issue, but sending them tends to be a source of discomfort...for the other person. Whether it’s pent-up emotion or a deeper issue, Maseo’s psychic threads sound like he’s yelling every single word into the recipient’s ear from two feet away at the top of his lungs. This occurs whether he’s in the same room with the recipient or across the street. This is a source of deep embarrassment for the soft-spoken Warlord. He responds to a psychic threads verbally, or with a nod or other form of body language.

    History:

Maseo no Shingetsu was the firstborn son to Asuka no Shingetsu, a District Queen, and her Consort, Eisen no Shingetsu. While Maseo was cherished by his father and loved by his mother, his gender immediately set the course of his life within his family. A male in Tacea’s female-centered culture, his role was to cherish, protect, and defend his mother and to act accordance with her word. Maseo worshiped his father, absorbing his lessons of discipline and keeping his feelings in check so as not to embarrass the family. He was also expected to set the proper example for his younger siblings and his cousin, Kiyoko, all of whom were born over the next six years. Maseo was a dutiful son, but even at a young age, he recognized that his sisters received much more of their mother’s time than he and his brother. His aunt Naru was glad to see him, but even his cousin Kiyoko, a fellow Black Widow, received the bulk of her time.

Even his Birthright ceremony seemed an afterthought to his mother. She attended, speaking to him only briefly before he began the ceremony. He emerged with his Rose jewel to find his father waiting for him, but Mother was nowhere to be seen. Eisen explained that she’d been called away to address a matter with Clan Izayoi. He did not show his father that this bothered him, recalling the older man’s lessons about saving face and maintaining his discipline. Two years later, when his sister Yanori underwent her Birthright ceremony, Maseo watched his mother meditate in silence during the whole night, refusing to leave until she saw Yanori emerge from the temple.

Maseo didn’t recognize the seed of resentment that took root that day, but his father did. That seed grew even further when his mother showed pride--true pride--at the birth of his cousin Sakura, a fellow Queen. Asuka believed that this was a sign of the Shingetsu’s continued rise to prominence in Tacea, and she went to personally visit her sister’s family showering them with gifts and kindness.

Sensing Maseo’s pain, Eisen worked hard to cultivate his son’s talents and focus his energy upon service to their family. Maseo entered Geisha training at twelve years old, determined to earn a place in the Dragon Mother’s Court and, thereby, his mother’s respect. The next few years saw him excel in the arts of the courtier and companion, though he realized early that his heart felt no joy in the idea of service to any Queen. If nothing else, he hoped to open a tea house and make money, finding greater interest in keeping books than keeping the company of others. By age eighteen, however, Maseo had withdrawn from Geisha training after an incident involving a young woman from a vassal family of the Kagen Clan.

Asuka's displeasure chilled relations between mother and son due to the fee that the family paid to his teacher for his early dismissal. Maseo returned home under his father's watchful eye to be groomed for service as a member of the Guard. In his free time, Maseo kept company with his Aunt Naru playing the violin while she worked or helping with minor matters to address shipping issues for some of Clan Shingetsu’s less-legitimate endeavors. From time to time, Naru allowed him to escort his cousin Kiyoko while she handled larger issues on Naru’s behalf. Always a quiet, yet intimidating presence, Maseo found that working with his aunt and cousin was far less stifling than his Geisha training and didn’t require him biting his tongue as often as he had to in his mother’s Court. Moreover, it kept him away from home and having to watch his mother dote upon Sakura and groom her as her heir. He sometimes served as an escort for Sakura as well, accompanying her on various walks and attending her Birthright Ceremony as well.

At 20, he made his Offering and gained his Opal. His father, Naru, and Kiyoko were the only people he informed. His mother was coincidentally in a business meeting and Maseo chose not to voice it. If Asuka was ever offended by the gesture, she never voiced it.

When Kiyoko discovered that the Nakano family was using the Shingetsu shipping routes to distribute their goods on behalf of the Izayoi, she took the information to Naru and her own mother, Aiko, to address. Maseo agreed with his cousin that action was required and asked Naru how he could help. The older woman smiled and asked Maseo to go to the Clan Queen, Takara no Shingetsu, and advise that Naru would arrive at her court in a few days' time to speak with her about the matter.

Naru never arrived at Takara’s Court. Maseo was part of the search party that learned her fate. “Brigands” had attacked and killed the Black Widow in an area that should have been guarded well enough from thieves. Inwardly, Maseo blamed himself for not being there. When Kiyoko arrived and demanded a Price from the Izayoi for Naru's death, Maseo watched the Clan Queen politely, yet firmly, shut down the younger Black Widow. When Takara said that she’d address the matter with the Izayoi leaders, Maseo suspected that would be the end of the discussion. His respect for the Clan Queen vanished utterly at that moment. When he reported the outcome to his parents, they supported Takara's position and demanded that Maseo do the same. Maseo lost his respect for them as well.

When Kiyoko moved to take over Naru’s operations, Maseo joined up immediately.

When Kiyoko needed it, Maseo was happy to deliver more pointed examples of the Clan Shingetsu’s strength. The clan took over some of the illegal drug trade in Tacea and Maseo now had a path for his talents that did not force him to serve a queen. The Nakano clan learned their place but the Izayoi were displeased at their losses. When one of their Warlords captured one of Kiyoko's enforcers in an attempt to prove unethical dealings, Maseo quietly murdered the young man and made him disappear. But Maseo’s luck ran out when they sent four of their own warriors to capture him.

The new Dragon Mother hailed from the Izayoi Clan and had long been a rival to the clan Queen, hoping to prove that the Shingetsu were dishonorable. Maseo knew he was betrayed by someone close to him but not whom. He didn't believe that Kiyoko would sell him out but his own parents were not above suspicion. It was not the first time that she'd allowed a family member to be dispatched keep peace with the Izayoi. Maseo vowed to get even, no matter how long it took.

The night before his meeting with the Izayoi Queen, Maseo watched the change of guard. The new guard waited until his predecessor was distracted, then slit his throat before unlocking Maseo's cell. His rescuer handed him an ornate box from his mother's study, one that Maseo had seen a few times in his childhood. The masked stranger offered Maseo the box and suggested that he take it with him, far from this place.

Keeping his life sounded better than dying for someone else’s agenda.

He arrived in Raej some time ago and learned that his employer had also gifted him the ship that he'd sailed upon, a large amount of money, and a cargo hold full of tea and herbs. Maseo still had no idea who was behind his release, but it appeared that they intended for him to stay away from Tacea. He employed Naru’s teachings to create a legitimate business for himself, the White Lotus Trading Company, and ingratiate himself into the Courts. Meanwhile, he also works to create his own underworld presence in Raej through the use of his organization, the Lotus Clan. The “Tea Lord” as he’s called, appears harmless and unassuming to most, but this is a mask for a man who is ready to commit violence and bring death at a moment’s notice.

He’s more content now than he ever was in Tacea, working for himself and slowly expanding his influence throughout Terreille. Still, he dreads the day that his benefactor comes calling. Now and again, he receives messages or packages from his benefactor, suggesting that he aid particular person or get closer to an individual he barely knows. Maseo carries out these requests out of respect for the person or persons who helped him when he needed it, while he tries to glean more information on who they are.

Until then, he’s also building his own army to keep him safe from reprisal in case he gets a request he cannot meet. Eventually, the Dragon Mother of Tacea may also send someone after him and Maseo will not go down without a fight.

If he dies, he’ll take pride in dragging as many of her people to Hell with him as he’s able.

    Character in Play:

Casa de Atholi restaurant was currently Maseo no Shingetsu’s favorite place to eat in all of Raej. He’d been here nearly a year, seen practically every inch of the Territory as a guest of Prince Khaldun’s court, and he enjoyed the melting pot of cuisine that prevailed in the capital. Still, he enjoyed going to the Dhemlani restaurant once per week at minimum to enjoy a plate of that spiced meat or the wonderful paella that the southern Territory was famous for. He entered and was shown to a table quickly enough, while the proprietor, Prince Hector Pasqual de Atholi spoke to a pair of servers and assigned them to Maseo’s table.

Today’s special had fresh shrimp and Maseo ordered it, offering a small smile to the servants even as a trio of flies buzzed about his ear. Clearly, they were trying to escape the heat to a cooler place and Maseo couldn’t blame them. Raej was hotter than he liked, hotter than his homeland by great margin, but it was a dry heat and, in the end, tolerable. The first server brought him a glass of cool water and Maseo sipped it briefly while he waited for food to arrive.

In his peripheral, he noted three Raejian men staring at him. They whispered to each other, uttering a few rude words about his the set of his eyes and what his mother must look like naked. Maseo said nothing, continuing to sip his water and wait for his food to arrive.

The trio of Warlords were guardsmen for the District Court, men he’d encountered several times in service to the Queen. These three were not the type of men that Maseo typically engaged in conversation. One of them was ignorant, and the other two followed his lead. They also loved their alcohol and Maseo already got the sense that they were well into their cups at this time of day, despite the fact that they were likely due back at their posts very soon.

He suppressed a sigh and sipped his water, even as the trio rose from their chairs and walked over to his table. Their leader, Lord Ammon, smelled like there was more booze than blood in his veins. He made a deep, exaggerated bow to Maseo, which the other two followed, snickering the whole time. Maseo inclined his head slightly in return, holding to Protocol until the men gave insult.

Good afternoon, Lord Foreigner.” Ammon said, speaking in a rather brutal approximation of Maseo’s accent. The sobriquet wasn’t new to Maseo. He knew what people called him behind his back, even if he didn’t acknowledge it.

Good afternoon, Lord Ammon. It’s a good thing that your rounds bring you to this fine establishment each day. I, for one, feel safer for the presence of you and your fine men.” Maseo said.

Lord Ammon’s eyes narrowed at Maseo’s words.

"Have a care with your tongue, Tea Lord. Unless you want to step outside and defend your words with steel.” Lord Ammon said, waving his hand about to dispel the flies.

I do not wish to fight you. I am only here to eat.

Oh, he doesn’t wish to fight. You hear that boys? Lord Foreigner is a coward and a stranger.” he said, turning to his friends. They other two laughed and Maseo’s eyes took in each man briefly, noting the position of their swords, their postures, and their relative position in relation to his.

Carries a sword around during Court, but only uses it to do pretty little dances.” Ammon said, his tone getting louder. A few people looked their way and Hector appeared ready to step in and speak to the men, but Maseo held up a hand to forestall him. That same moved once and conjured a slim pair of wooden chopsticks, ornately carved, and Maseo held them in his fingers.

Boys, I think he’s mad. He’s got a pair of sticks out!” Ammon said, continuing to run his mouth.

Maseo’s hand lanced out and the chopsticks clicked three times in succession. Click-click-click.

Maseo sighed and set the chopsticks down the table in front of him. Amoon looked down and found the three buzzing flies lying dead on the table between the sticks. Maseo then looked at each man in turn, his expression flat and cold. His gaze lingered on Ammon the longest, waiting for his next ill-advised comment.

Lord Ammon mumbled something about getting back to work, rose from his spot and quickly left the restaurant with his two jackals in tow. Maseo cleaned the chopsticks, vanished them, and enjoyed his meal when it arrived shortly after.

Business kept him away for three weeks, but Maseo returned to Casa de Atholi for a meal upon his return to Raej.

Lord Ammon and his men hadn’t stopped in since.

Hello all. After some thought, I've decided to keep the original roll.

Hello, I’d like to redeem my Advanced Craft Speciality (Item Enhancement) for Maseo, per Points Transaction:

Advanced Item Enhancement: Maseo can channel his Craft through a weapon without concentration, increasing its durability and its keen edge. Blades so enchanted are capable of cutting through shields and weapons (and resisting attacks from) less than the Green with disturbing ease. Shields of darker strength (Green & Sapphire) can withstand the bite of Maseo’s blade, though he may compromise them with repeated attacks and effort. The darkest shields (Red and below) function as normal.
