Appearance

Play By: Julia Almendra
Distinguishing Features:

Like some people from Moesia Province, Marina has blonde hair and fair skin. She also has freckles that she disliked as a child but likes now that she is an adult. Although her hair is blonde to begin with, she dyes it even lighter. She also likes to wear eyeliner. It’s the only makeup that interests her and she insists that it helps with glare from the sun, however untrue that really is.

Personality

Personality:

Marina is a badass. ...Or at least, that's the reputation she tries to cultivate. This can be a difficult task while wearing the Rose as her Offering Jewel. However, looking beyond her lack of a caste and her relatively Light Jewel of Rank, one will find a willful young woman with a penchant for mischief. She takes her court role seriously, as it directly affects the welfare of the village as well as her own reputation, and the reputation of her family.

This appearance is one that is important to her, and she is otherwise a bit rough around the edges. A fun day out to Marina is one spent in the woods hunting, followed by eating whatever game she caught and a good night’s sleep. A romantic date would be similar, except it might include the male cleaning the kill for her, but she would want to do the cooking.

Since she has had only a crash course so far in how to behave in a court, Marina may say or do the wrong thing, though not usually with malice. The best way to make her angry is to do something dumb or dangerous or even worse: dumb and dangerous while out on a hunt. If she gives an instruction, it is because it’s important and the sharper it is, the more important she thinks it is to follow. Along this line, Marina is a good teacher, but only to those who are able to learn from her style of instructing: she prefers to teach through showing rather than explaining whenever she can and is not afraid to let someone fail if it won’t lead to bodily harm. As she matures more, she may become a better teacher, but for now she would rather do than teach.

Likes:
  • Being Outside: Marina is perfectly happy spending all of her life outside, even for sleeping when weather permits. She has become accustomed to the weather changes and even the cold mountain winters don’t bother her too much since she dresses properly, was taught the best way to create shelters, and readily uses warming spells as needed. Especially bad storms will keep her indoors, leaving her restless and impatient, and likely up to no good.

  • Meat: Marina is a carnivore, plain and simple. She would never be able to subsist on fruits and vegetables alone, and is quite certain that she would waste away within a week’s time. (She’s also a bit dramatic). While she understands that other people like when vegetables make up for part or even most of their meal, she likes them to be an afterthought in favor of meat. Marina also enjoys cooking it and trying out new techniques, marinades, and spices.

  • Jam: this is the only way Marina likes fruit, possibly because the texture bears no resemblance to the original fruit and there’s usually quite a lot of sugar added, so the flavor is different as well. Marina also likes making jam; her family has a ‘secret recipe’ that goes back generations, and they supply their jam to the Rookwood Inn and Tavern. The secret is that there’s nothing different about it, but it’s often popular anyway and they don’t entertain any guesses on what makes it special.
Dislikes:
  • Fruit: it’s rather unfortunate that Marina dislikes most fruit, seeing as it’s one of the few things that Rookwood is able to grow. She doesn’t like the texture much, whether its fresh from a tree or baked in a pie. Pears are her least favorite of them all, making her the worst ambassador ever for Rookwood’s most famous export.

  • The action of making a kill: Marina loves the chase: finding signs of prey, tracking it, and finally coming upon the animal. She also likes to eat meat, and to provide it to the village. Marina also takes very seriously her role in protecting the village from wildlife. What she dislikes is the actual moment of killing an animal. She takes no joy from this and feels bad for their brief moment of pain the animal may feel, and that the animal had to die to ensure safety or subsistence. For this reason, she puts deterrence methods into action as much as she can to discourage dangerous animals from causing trouble.

  • City-folk: it’s more the idea of city-folk—the stereotype—that Marina dislikes. In her opinion, they’re ill-suited for the wilderness or survival even in a small village with higher expectations than Rookwood can meet. She experienced some looking down upon her the few times she has been in the city and it left a bad taste in her mouth. Of course not everyone is like this, but her limited experience has set the tone for her.
Fears:
  • Goats: have you seen their sideways pupils? No? Have a look and come back and try to tell her they’re not creepy as all get-out. The way they stare makes her feel like they’re examining her soul, only to dismiss her with a long bleat and demand more food. Marina will do everything she can to avoid having to deal with goats, though she tries to be discreet about this because what good Master of Beasts is afraid of a goat?

  • That Oryon will be sent to rule somewhere else: this is a fear born of both personal and professional interests. Marina considers Oryon to be her closest friend, and she would be very sad to see her leave, even if she was happy at the same time for Oryon’s success. From a professional standpoint, Marina worries about what would happen to Rookwood if they were left without a Queen because she sees the role as very important now that the village has grown, and she doubts that a Queen from somewhere else would be suited to the role. She also worries about the changes a new Queen could bring for her own role in the court, and therefore her livelihood.

  • Disappointing her father: Marina already feels sometimes that her father would have preferred that one of her brothers take up the traditions of her family. Neither were interested, though, so that left her and she was very interested. Although he has not given any recent indication that he’d rather have her brothers in her role, she remembers clearly how hard he fought to keep her home when she was a child.
Craft Strengths:
  • Warming spells: being good at using warming spells is an absolute necessity for someone who spends as much time outside in the wilderness as Marina does, especially because her job does not pause when winter sets in. The hunting party still needs a leader, livestock needs care, and dangerous predators still need to be deterred. This was the first spell she remembers learning and one that she used very often since then.

  • Trap spells: for someone who hunts, trap spells are a normal part of learning. Since Marina's role encompasses more than that, she has also learned things such as security spells. She uses these to know if dangerous animals are coming too close to the village, as well as to try to send them away. Some of her timed craft will just make a loud noise and a flash when tripped to startle an animal. Others will ensnare it. She has spent time fine-tuning these spells because she is just one person with a very large job to do.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Item Enhancement: Marina sure thinks it would be nice if she could make her boots more durable, or her coat, or her weapons, or the fences used to keep the farm animals. But she can't. Any attempts at doing so result in no effect, and sometimes even makes the item in question more brittle than it was to begin with. At least things don't burst into flame. Still, Marina usually doesn't try anymore, having largely given up on this, useful as it would be.

  • Jewel Management: wearing the White and later the Rose meant that Marina had to learn to be as efficient as possible with the multitude of spells needed for her job. Between warming spells, timed spells, shielding, and the amount of space she likes to have in her psychic cupboard, Jewel strength is at a premium. It’s unfortunate, then, that Marina has not been able to get a good handle on managing her Jewels. Despite all of her efforts to the contrary, she is passable at best. It’s partly due to the fact that she gets distracted with the actual tasks she’s completing, which is something that will likely get better with age. On the other hand, it’s also simply not a natural talent of hers, which will likely cause her to continue to struggle.
Life Story

Mother: Bianca Dantis (b. 143 PP), White - Tiger-Eye witch
Father: Valerian Dantis (b. 142 PP), Tiger-Eye - Summer-Sky Prince
Brother: Traian Dantis (b. 166 PP), Rose - Opal Prince
Brother: Sandu Dantis (b. 173 PP), Rose - Purple-Dusk Warlord

Dog: Zero, large fluffy white dog, similar to a Kuvasz

History:
Marina was born to a long line of hunters, the middle child of three siblings, sandwiched by two brothers. Hunting was generally a male endeavor in her family, and it was her father who was the first official Master of Beasts appointed in a court. Even though hunting was not an encouraged activity for Marina, she tagged along with her father and older brother as much as she could, and when her younger brother was old enough to accompany them, it was expected that she stop and learn something else.

Except she refused. With all the drama and tears expected of an eight year old, Marina stomped her little feet and then headed off into the wilderness alone, except for the young hunting dog she had taken a liking to. The dog was not even a year old, still with all the exuberance of a puppy, and he happily tagged along on the adventure.

The adventure ended up lasting all night, and while Marina thought that she was alone, her parents had quickly decided that they would simply see how she did. Her father was not far away, shielded from sight and hearing, ready to step in the moment she seemed distressed or overwhelmed.

Marina didn’t become overwhelmed. Instead, she built herself a little shelter close to a water source like she had been taught, and while her couple of snares did not catch anything, she ate some of the dried venison she kept vanished. In the morning, her father walked up to her little campsite, where a fire smoldered, and she and the puppy were cuddled together for warmth and brought her home.

Her mother was more angry than than her father was, and imposed a two month ban on hunting for her. She was relegated to tasks related to the worst parts of livestock care as well as cleaning the house, and she was not otherwise allowed outside. During this time, Marina had her Birthright ceremony, and her older brother, age thirteen, finally told his parents that he wasn’t really interested in hunting. He wanted to learn how to make clothes instead because he enjoyed mending the wear and tear in his hunting clothes and saw other room for improvement with them.

This lead to several long discussions between Marina’s parents. She knew they were happening because of tenseness in their house, rather than from hearing them because her parents kept themselves shielded.

In the end, Marina was allowed to hunt. Her world opened up and she learned various aspects of animal husbandry as well, though she did not enjoy that as much until she was older. Hunting was an adventure to her young mind, while livestock were dull and predictable. As she grew into a teenager, she began to appreciate the livestock skills as well, finding the different personalities of each animal to be interesting, except for the goats. They were a legion of creeptastic, judging, escape-plotting garbage disposals.

As often as she could, Marina spent time with her best friend, Oryon. Since Oryon was a Queen, their lives looked very different, but they still found time to have fun. Marina also showed her basic things like cleaning a kill and tracking prey as an addition to what Ory learned from her own father, who was a butcher. They were things that teenage Marina thought everyone should know how to do, regardless of their role in life. What if something happened while Oryon commuting to her training?

As a late teen, Marina began learning the best ways to fend off dangerous animals, which was a very important part of her skillset. It was also one that Marina’s mother and father argued over. Her father didn’t want his precious daughter going up against dangerous predators while her mother declared that if she was following this path, she needed to learn all of it and she should know the best ways to protect herself and the village. Her father relented.

And, as it turned out, Marina’s younger brother was not really interested in the family’s leader of the hunting party tradition, either. She had a feeling that her father was a bit confused by the whole thing, and sometimes she felt like his third choice for the job, but he still seemed happy enough to continue to teach her, even how to deal with large predators. After a while, it began to feel like a partnership, rather than a mentor-protege relationship, and Marina was simply spending time with her dad in their shared interest.

Soon after Marina’s Offering, her best friend, Oryon, became the village’s Queen. Marina’s father was given an official role in the court as Master of Beasts. He thought about having Marina take on the role, but she balked in the beginning because she wasn’t sure that she felt ready for that. What if she let everyone down? Instead she assisted her father as everything settled and learned exactly how the role would work and what it was like being in a court, or at least, what it was like being in a little village court since Marina had experienced no other ones.

A year out, Marina was more confident and so she and her father traded roles with the expectation that he would slowly fade out as her own influence and confidence grew.

Character in Play:

The day was magnificent. Though this is what Marina said about every day except the ones where the weather made it absolutely impossible to be outside. Today, she got to patrol the village border with her father. She had not gotten to do this much for the past couple of weeks because he was involved with Oryon’s court being set up.

Marina thought that this was normal considering he was the Leader of the Hunt for Rookwood. It was an important role, and he would be a person her best friend would likely need to liaise with regularly. Or at least, those were the words her mother used to describe why he was meeting with Ory at the beginning of the whole thing.

“I’ve been offered an official role in the court,” Marina’s father suddenly said as they walked. This was normal for them; they would converse sometimes, and other times there would be great stretches of companionable silence. Sometimes that silence happened during the middle of conversations. It drove Marina’s mother batty at times, but Marina didn’t mind. It was a quirk her father had and he always replied eventually when she asked him a question.

“Oh?” Marina prompted when the silence went on, feeling a little impatient for once. A role in a court seemed like an exciting thing, especially since it was her best friend’s court, and she was so excited and relieved that Oryon wasn’t going somewhere else to set up her court.

“Yep,” her father responded, and there was another pause. This one was heavier and Marina looked over with a frown, suddenly worried.“Master of Beasts, I would be called.” More silence.

“What would you be doing?” Marina asked. That could be a lot of things.

“Pretty much what I do now,” Valerian said, looking over at Marina. “Protecting the village, leading the hunting party, acting as the go-to for livestock care.” It was nothing different from his current job in the village, although Marina supposed there would probably be meetings and other stuff that went along with being in a court. Those probably wouldn’t be fun, but otherwise it sounded like a good idea.

“That sounds like a good job to have. Is there something wrong with it?” Marina asked. She would have thought he might be more excited about it than this.

“No, I think it’s a really good idea. I suggested that you should have it.”

Marina took two more steps before her father’s words sunk in and she stopped in her tracks, eyes wide as her stomach flip-flopped uncomfortably. A role in a court? Her? She had no idea what being in a court would really be like, having had no formal training for that. She suddenly felt like a little girl in over her head and she swallowed hard before finding her voice.

“Me? But- Well-” Marina stammered and then collected herself. “I don’t think I’m ready for that yet.” They had discussed that she might take over from him in as the Leader of the Hunt for the village, but she thought that was still several years off. While she was confident in her skills, she doubted the others in the hunting party really saw her as a leader yet. Marina felt so young compared to a lot of them.

“I thought you might say that,” Valerian said with his winning dad-smile. Marina narrowed her eyes at him. He was amused by her! She huffed in response and he continued. “So I suggested that you should take over from me in a year and in the meantime, be my assistant. Then we’ll switch.”

“Oh,” Marina said. “That makes a lot more sense.” Then she looked over with a frown. “Why didn’t you just tell me that in the first place?” Her father laughed and gave her another smile.

“And miss out on that reaction?” Valerian said. “Anyway, we’ll have a meeting with Lady Rivers in a couple of days, but I’m sure you’ll want to talk with her about it before then.” Oh did she ever. Marina hadn’t thought there would be a role in court for her, and it made her worry that she and Ory would end up growing apart because of their duties. Now that didn’t seem to be the case.

Marina felt like her life had just completely altered course, and yet not because she would be doing exactly the same work she had always intended to.

“Can I go talk to her now?” Marina asked. They still had some things to do, but she could do them later. She felt like a little girl running off to go tell her best friend the latest fun secret.

“Yes, go,” Valerian said with a shooing motion. “I’ll even feed the goats for you.”

“Thanks, Dad!” Marina said, already jogging back towards the village. She didn’t even turn around and defend herself about the goats.

Could I have a general random roll, please? And five family rolls.

Also I'm not sure if it matters, but I spoke to Isa before registering this name since she previously had a Marina in the keep. :)
