Distinguishing Features:
Makoto almost always sports a full beard, not believing in the nonsense of a five o’clock shadow or anything less as he finds it tacky. While it could be argued that he does not need glasses, he still wears them anyway as he finds them fashionable depending on his outfit.

Personality

Personality:
From a distance, Makoto is everything that one could want in a Warlord Prince. Respectful, dedicated, and proud of his station and his work, he is always either in service as an Escort or supporting his mother (and grandmother) in any way that he can. He can be charming and witty, an absolute delight to be around, but ultimately that is only one facet of his personality. Makoto adheres to it because it is expected that he be this way. Anything else will bring potential shame or dishonor upon his family name and himself (and one of those is far worse than the other). Such a thing happening is completely unacceptable when so many of his plans hinge upon him rising in prestige and renown, not falling from grace.

It is in personal interactions, behind closed doors, that the truth of who Makoto is comes out. He is every inch the Green-Jeweled Warlord Prince, forever riding the edge of his temper. Those around him know it well, especially his mother and grandmother who have made sure that the more explosive incidents have been kept hidden. While there has not been a violent outburst without reason (as far as Makoto is concerned) there have been a handful of outbursts that often come on the heels of being slighted or denied what he believes to be his. An altercation is almost guaranteed if that thing is something that he has put the time in for and planned out.

There is little in Makoto's life that is left to chance. Every day is planned out, all major events outlined, with a task list to be completed. It is one of the ways that he ensures control of his life, having wrested it from his grandmother and mother. If everything is planned, if he schedules it all himself, then there is little for them to say... as long as it falls in line with what they want. These obsessive behaviors keep him from teetering over the edge most days, and are usually what send him over when he does. It is the same behaviors that enable him to be an excellent Escort. He is fastidious when it comes to seeing that everything is as it should be.

Makoto trains hard, pushes himself to his limits, and expects that others around him do the same. There is no room in his life for anything but the best and the best is exactly what he wants. It has made the Warlord Prince an extremely possessive individual when it comes to the things that are his. He can barely tolerate others touching and handling what belongs to him; he wants to snap, snarl, and put down that which dares to take liberties with his possessions. Even here, his need to plan and plot comes out. When someone runs afoul of his temper, Makoto will begin to devise plans to handle the interloper. It is something that makes him particularly dangerous to anger, as his plans are thorough and he always claims his Price in the end.

The only part of his life that is not planned are his Ruts, even if he knows well when they approach. He has never fixated on the same woman twice, and the triggers that send him into Rut are different each time. For all that he schemes, Makoto finds pleasure in letting everything go… but only when his Rut comes. These are the few moments that he takes as offered, without considering the future ramifications of his actions, that he enjoys everything that he is the most.

He is the Ariake heir and that means he is nothing less than exemplary. All Makoto has to do is make sure the rest of the world knows it.

Likes:
  • Ariake Prestige - There is nothing that Makoto takes more pride in more than the prestige that comes from his family name. As the only child of Yuina no Ariake, main branch Queen of the Ariake, the continuance of the line falls to him; all the weight and honor of his name rests on his reasonably ready shoulders. His children (of which there will be three and only three) will be Queens and Matriarchs. They will lead the Ariake into greatness, and everything he does, everything he has done, is a step on the path to ensure the ascendancy of his Clan.
  • Strategy & Planning - Makoto finds pleasure in planning and organizing everything, using it as a way to keep control of his life to counteract his creeping concern that someone else is pulling his strings. Not only does Makoto plan out his day, he has planned out his entire life. Worse, he’s planned out the life of his future wife as well, from every detail of their wedding (organized and color-coded in folders) to how many children they’re going to have and when they will be having them. It isn’t just planning either. He has a mind for strategy that even a Prince would be envious of. Long story short: it isn’t easy to outmaneuver Makoto because he is often already at the end, waiting for people to play out their roles as he’s planned them.
  • Architecture - A secret passion. Something about building design calls to the Warlord Prince, though it could very well be part of his need to control and plan everything. Regardless, he enjoys studying architecture, especially when he can track the subtle changes that come over time as new methods are discovered and old ones are rendered obsolete. Sketching out building designs, like the home of his future family, is something he can be found doing in a rare quiet moment.
Dislikes:
  • The World Beyond Tacea - Nothing good comes from the lands beyond Tacea. They are uncultured, violent, and - as far as he’s concerned - uneducated. His dislike has only grown in the years since the borders opened. Makoto finds that every bit of news he hears makes him glad that his place is in Tacea. The worst part of this is his noticeable attitude when it comes to dealing with foreigners, barely finding them worth his time.
  • Haneul Mhin - When the time came for Yua no Ariake’s Virgin Night it should have been Makoto that saw the Healer through it. Instead, Haneul saw her through it. Makoto has yet to forgive this slight. Not only did Haneul take what should have been Makoto’s, but he has also consistently been a thorn in Makoto’s side. From the time that he served as a First Circle Escort for Yuki no Natsuhana, stepping in at moments the Warlord Prince thought he had no place to do so (especially in regards to his fiancee), all the way down to his mere existence. He has a strong hatred of Haneul Mhin, one that has lingered despite Haneul’s absence. This hatred has only gotten worse, in fact, due to the Gray-Jeweled Prince traveling with his fiancee.
  • Yuina no Ariake -  Despite all the adoration and respect Makoto affords his mother, there is no one he dislikes more. She planned his life out to the minute from the day it became clear there would be no further children from her. It was only after he proved to her that he knew what he was doing that he was able to operate more independently, without having to explain himself. Now she trusts him, and believes him to be a good and dutiful son. The truth is... he is exactly that. At the same time, he dislikes that he has become what his mother has made. It would be so much better if he could take credit for who and what he is without her involvement. For that, he will never stop disliking his mother or the influence she has on his life.
Fears:
  • Failure - Even the thought of failure, the mere hint of it, is enough to set Makoto off into a spiral into anger. The deep-seated need to never be wrong, to lead the Ariake to ascendency in Tacea’s political scene, are the driving aspects of his personality. In a Territory as small as Tacea, where news of his failures would spread quickly, failure is completely unacceptable. As much as he does not consciously think of it, it is a subconscious concern constantly brewing in the back of his head. There are fates worse than death, and he is absolutely certain that should he, for whatever reason, fail or otherwise bring dishonor upon the Ariake Clan, that those fates are what await him.
  • Being a Pawn - With everything that he has done, everything that he is part of, who his mother is, and the views on males within Tacea, Makoto’s darkest fear is that he is nothing more than a pawn in someone else’s game. Such thoughts are what spur him into action, make him plan everything down to the last detail, and leave him with no other choice than to make sure everything is exactly how he wants it.
  • Yua no Ariake - There is something wrong with Yua no Ariake. Makoto has known this since the very first moment they met, and has been working on rectifying her wrongs every chance he had to do so. Yet Yua wears the Red as a Birthright, and has come to wear the Black as well, granting the Healer a power he can barely fathom or understand. Makoto fears this power: if he cannot keep Yua sheathed, what will become of all his careful plans? The Healer must be brought to heel. His entire future, everything that he has planned for, hinges on bringing Yua in line with what they all want: a power to be directed, unleashed where the Ariake (that is to say, Makoto) see fit. Anything else would be a disaster.
Craft Strengths:
  • Hunter’s Mark - Trained to be an Escort (for all female Castes, but primarily for Healers) Makoto has honed the use of his Hunter's Mark. His mark requires infrequent refreshing, lasting longer than others, and once placed he is able to ascertain a great deal of information about the individual it is on. This includes a general sense of their jewel reservoir and whether or not they are tired, enabling him to know when to step in even if he is not immediately present in the room.
  • Efficiency Craft - Learned at the hands of his Prince father, Makoto took to learning this particular craft and ran with it. He applies it to all avenues of his life, using it to help him fine-tune and plan out all manner of events or otherwise. It is also of use when it comes to managing those that he escorts, helping ensure that there is no wasted moment, and that everything runs smoothly and efficiently.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Emotion Related Craft - Despite the fact that this is something an Escort should be skilled in, Makoto actually struggles when it comes to any sort of emotion related craft. From being able to read the emotions of those around him to manipulating them, he can - at best - catch glimpses he can’t understand or - at worst - simply agitate someone by merely trying to get a bead on their emotional state.
  • Healing Craft - While ultimately there was not a need for him to be skilled in healing craft, as a Healer's Escort, the Ariake often trained their males even if they were not naturally dual-caste (as they train any and all, witch or warlord). The problem is that Makoto cannot, in the slightest, wrap his mind around healing craft. The most he can do is gesture to herbs and tell you which are useful for healing along with repeating, from rote, what he has read about other healing topics. Attempts at healing have never gone well, leaving him drained with no healing having occurred, agitated, and likely to lash out.
Life Story

Mother: Yuina no Ariake (51 - b. 143AP) - Queen -  Rose to Purple Dusk (current reigning Queen)
Father: Shinobu no Hiraide (平出, “peaceful origin”) (58 - b. 136AP) - Prince - Summer Sky to Purple Dusk** (her consort)

**jewels set, not rolled

History:
From the very beginning the best was expected of Makoto. The only heir born to Yuina no Ariake and her consort Shinobu no Hiraide, Makoto set a tone for his life from a very young age with his first extremely vocal cries and the appearance of his Warlord Prince caste, the signs of his temperament obvious even then as he was a fussy baby. He was a worrisome child. His temper was quick to ignite over the smallest thing. A toy out of place, someone trying to take what was his, and he would lash out.

As a small child, without his Birthright, this was troubling solely because of his caste. Kotone, his great-grandmother and Matriarch of the Ariake Clan, took note of such behavior and - as Makoto was the only heir despite Yuina’s efforts to have more children - was quick to see that the growing Warlord Prince was saddled with lessons at a young age. The structure helped somewhat. Ultimately, it enabled him to refine his ability to work within the rules of Protocol and Etiquette. The lessons rendered Makoto's mind sharp and quick to pick up details, so that he might manipulate them for his purposes.

This was only enhanced when he started to spend time with his Prince father, mother and grandmother alike hoping that his father's peaceful demeanor might help influence and calm his son. Nothing worked, and when he came away with a Summer Sky Birthright, it became even more evident that they would have to do something about his temper. Despite having the young Makoto meet a number of Ariake Queens (and some that were from mere vassal families) none of them held his leash. Makoto's lessons increased, plans for his future already in the works because they had to keep his more unsightly behavior and habits from the public eye.

It quickly became apparent that if the Ariake elders wanted Makoto to cooperate, it was best to involve him in their plans. The growing Warlord Prince did best when he was listening in, taking in everything that was acceptable for him to hear. After all, one day he would be married. Makoto would someday support and guide his wife as she joined the main line of the Ariake Clan. For a time it was thought that Nariko no Ariake, a Rose Birthright Queen of the second branch, would be the one he would wed. That fell through when Noriko no Ariake brought forth her Priestess daughter, Honoka no Ariake, with her Summer Sky Birthright. Such a jewel would enable Honoka to potentially stand just as deeply in the Abyss as Makoto, and her Caste would be a better match for him and his temperament.

Noriko saw a chance to tie her family line back to that of the main branch through her daughter and it seemed that in Honoka she had succeeded. Yet Noriko and Yuina’s plans changed again when Yua, Noriko’s youngest and a natural Healer, came away from her Birthright with an uncut Red. For the next several years, Makoto continued his training and listened in as Kotone, Yuina, and Noriko worked out the details of his future engagement. Ultimately, in 186AP, not long after Makoto performed his Offering and claimed his Green, Yua and Makoto were betrothed. Yua was only thirteen at the time, and their interactions were extremely limited, as the Healer was often in lessons.

There was no denying what the addition of a potential Black could do for the mainline of the Ariake Clan. Even Makoto, who had feigned interest in his other fiancees, found himself captivated by the possibilities of possessing such a wife. For the next four years, the pair were kept apart, as Yua had training to continue. Makoto had his own work to do as well. Makoto, for all that he had long since learned how to comport and carry himself, had only seen his various behaviors engrained further in him. He continued to behave in public, his outbursts controlled (and those that weren’t were swept under the rug by his family) everything would continue as it must.

Makoto and Yua finally met for the first time at the Territory Court’s Star Festival. The meeting was organized by Noriko, and it went poorly. Yua was openly repulsed by Makoto, who by both standing and (carefully cultivated) reputation was quite the catch. Her rejection created a stir that many whispered about. Not that it stopped Noriko from encouraging Makoto from pushing at any and all chances to work with or escort Yua. Eventually he claimed a spot as First Circle Escort becoming an unwelcome presence at the Territory Court for the Birthright Red Healer. Makoto needed no encouragement whatsoever to pursue and look after Yua. As far as he was concerned the Healer was his and had been so from the moment they had been engaged four years previous. Nothing would see him not follow through on all the plans he had made.

Others that were close to the Healer did not necessarily see it that same way. So there were a smattering of small altercations that came to a head in 191AP when the volcanoes erupted and Yuki Natsuhana began planning an expedition outside of Tacea. Yua wished to go with her mentor to finish her training, but Seung Corro refused to permit her to go without the performance of her Virgin Night first. While Makoto was not enthused about Yua potentially leaving the Territory, he was not about to let someone else perform the Virgin Night of his fiancee.

It didn’t matter to him that he was only a Green. The Jewel was Dark, but not necessarily Dark enough to protect Yua through such an intimate moment. He didn’t see the danger to her. He only saw what was his. So when Yua turned him away and sought out the option presented by Yuki Natsuhana - Haneul Mhin - and carried out out her Virgin Night, it turned into an altercation. Makoto saw only red, his rage fueled by imaginings of his future wife in bed with a lowly Hanwa, and lashed out at the Gray-Jeweled Prince. Only the interference of others stopped the fight. While Haneul wore the darker jewel, he was not prepared for the full force of a Warlord Prince upon the edge. By the time Makoto came out of his haze of fury, Yua was gone from the Territory, along with Yuki, Haneul, and some of Yuki’s Daggers. Only Noriko’s reassurances, backed by both Kotone and Yuina, kept Makoto from following after them to take back what was his.

Over the past two years, Makoto has been stewing in his ire, feeding on the crumbs of the news that travels back from Shalador, about Yuki and those that went with her. First were the whispers that the slack-jawed Haneul Mhin had become more than an escort to the Queen. Next came the stories that something had happened to Yua no Ariake. It only grew worse from there, until word of the Decimation of Dena Nehele reached the shores of Tacea. Yua’s presence was finally confirmed.

Once the Ariake knew that Yua had claimed the Black, they made plans that would see Yua no Ariake brought home from the barbarous mainland. The Ariake are not content to leave the Healer in Dena Nehele, not when her support would be enough to turn the circle of inheritance back to their own candidate. As her fiance, Makoto has found himself tasked with the duty of bringing the Healer back. It is just a matter of making the arrangements and ensuring that he is able to travel to the uncivilized mainland. This time, he won’t let Yua refuse her duty.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
It was not anger that fueled Makoto as he stalked through the halls of the Territory Court. No, this was beyond that. This was rage, pure and unadulterated. He wanted blood, he wanted a Price, he wanted Haneul Mhin's head on a platter. He had been deliberately kept away - sent. away!! - for the past two days and he knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that the purpose had been so that Yua could have her Virgin Night.

The Warlord Prince knew it without a shadow of a doubt as there had been a subtle shift in the well of power afforded to the Red-Jeweled Healer. Something that the Hunter's Mark placed upon Yua told him. That same mark enabled him to make a beeline for where the Healer was, lips set into a near snarl as he caught the first scents of that Hanwa layabout twined too intimately around the changed scent of his fiancee. As he turned the corner, he saw a small gathering of people within the open courtyard of the Territory Court.

Yua was there, something within her hands, There was a half-smile on her face, which was more than Makoto ever got from the Healer. That was not the problem, no. The problem was that Haneul was there as well, sitting too close to Yua. He said something and that smile got a little wider, a little happier (or so he assumed that the smile was a happy one as he could not sense anything about the emotions within the pair; smiles were supposed to be happy things, were they not?). Then the Prince nudged the Healer with his shoulder lightly, leaning to whisper something into her ear.

Makoto was upon him, yanking Haneul away from Yua with enough force and surprise that he was able to send him tumbling to the ground. He did not growl, the Warlord Prince would never make such an animalistic noise as it was beneath him, and merely stared down at the Prince.

"How dare you," he hissed out. "You will cease touching what is mine by right." There was a rush of Green between the two, Haneul picking himself up slowly. His mouth opened, words said but Makoto could not hear them beyond the roar in his ears. He lunged, rage finally taking him. "Hanwa slut, dirtying everything you touch! You're useless! You'll infect everyone else with it if someone doesn't do something about it!"

The world faded away. It was just him, and this interloper that he would see put down.
