Appearance

Play By: Asa Butterfield
Distinguishing Features: He has a birthmark on the back of his neck in the shape of an almost-perfect heart, ironic in that it is so fitting with his surname. He adores the mark and always keeps his hair short enough in the back to show it off. Also of note are his very pale blue eyes, which can be very striking when put with the pale skin and dark hair both he and his brother share.

Immediately visible is also the vicious scar that rakes down one side of his face - blinding him in one eye. He is very self-conscious of the scar and will angle his posture in attempt to keep it from view, and routinely wears an eyepatch over the damaged eye.

Personality

Personality:

Kale Heartly has always had a natural inclination toward positivity and optimism, something he's managed to hold on to even through the turns his life has taken. He is usually able to look on the bright side of most situations and it takes scarce little effort for him to find the fun. It's a rare day where Kale can't find some reason to smile.

He is a friendly young man, and can be quite outgoing - willing to make friends, work with others, and try new things. A sincere and compassionate soul, Kale wants desperately to do good, help others, and cause smiles. Kale is not book smart, and honestly he can be a bit of an airhead sometimes as well, but he does have a fairly natural way with people. Most people, anyway. He has zero ability to "fake it" and if he doesn't like you he won't try to get along, or if he does it's still painfully obvious. Thankfully, he gives most people the benefit of the doubt and tries to see the good and the potential in everyone - within reason anyway. He has zero tolerance for bullies and you would be hard pressed to earn his geniality back if he ever classified you as one.

Although a relatively sensible young man, that sense is more something developed out of necessity and survival instinct from living on the streets rather than any innate logical tendencies because constantly battling that manufactured sensibility is an innate impulsiveness and curiosity - a need to explore and discover. He doesn't want to be told about things, either - he wants to see and experience them for himself. When something strikes his interest or piques his curiosity, it is highly likely that that natural impulsiveness will override his better learned senses.

Since arriving at the Dena Nehele Territory Court in spring of 192, Kale has grown, hardened, and softened again in different ways. While still a positive soul, and one who wants to bring joy and togetherness he has also gone from being a hopeful boy to a jaded young man with a heavy dose of bitterness in his heart. There is a lot of anger in his heart, and a lot of fear - which often tumbles and twists into more anger, which then sparks the fear again in a ruthless cycle of pain and doubt he sometimes feels he is only barely navigating through.

Whereas once he was able to see most things in black and white - the onset of his Healer caste has blurred this distinction into many shades of gray. He now feels for people, and their pain, even if they have caused pain to others, even if they have caused harm to him and those he cares about. One of the first things to begin to develop in him was this expanded sense of compassions and care - and it’s probably one of the aspects of himself that he is the most unsure about. While he has always been able to find the good in most people, once he decided a person was ‘bad’ they used to stay that way in his head and in his heart. Now, even if he dislikes someone, even if he hates them, he feels the need and the pull to heal them, to help them.

Likes:
  • 1 - Magic. Not craft-magic, but street magic. Sleight of hand, mundane illusions, mind tricks and misdirection, the kind that has even the most powerful of the Blood left confounded and everyone entertained. He loves watching this kind of magic, of course, but above all else he loves performing it. It makes him feel powerful and clever, putting him at the center of attention where he knows the secret that no one else knows and everyone wants to know.
  • 2 - Free Will. Kale highly values his right to choose, his right to go where he wants, speak how he wants, live where he wants, and do with his life what he chooses to. It isn’t so much independence as it is his grasp on his own free will. He wants to choose who he will be, forge his own path, and become his own person.
  • 3 - Theatre. Living stories - ones that don't require reading or sitting. When he sneaks into the theatre he gets to go to another world, almost live another life. It's fascinating and exhilarating and the most fun he's ever had aside from performing his magic tricks. Many days he fantasizes about taking to the stage himself, but he's never been brave enough to audition. Becoming an actor is a precious dream he's had since he was very young and the threat of it shattering isn't worth taking the risk to make it come true.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - His scar. Kale has a very prominent, very vicious looking scar on his face that bisects his eye and cuts down his cheek. He hates the scar vehemently and sees it as both a symbol of his own weakness/uselessness as well as the point where anything he could have been was completely cut away.
  • 2 - His own rage. Kale is a Warlord, not a Warlord Prince, and he also has the calming and compassionate nature of a Healer growing within him, so his rage isn’t this deadly and explosive thing. At least, not to anyone but himself. To him, it feels like a poison inside him, a little monster slowly eating him away from the inside. It burns him and chokes him, and whispers awful things in the back of his mind. It breeds resentment and fear and hate and all the things that Kale used to be so good at just… not having. Or at least, ignoring so well that it seemed - even to himself - that he didn’t have it.
  • 3 - Bullies. Even aside from the treatment they received from their father when things turned sour, Kale cannot stand bullies. He doesn't understand why people can't just cooperate and work together and help each other out. Why do people need to be cruel or mean or step on others to get their way? He can't stand to see someone pushing someone else around and can be impulsive enough to step in even when he has absolutely no hope of doing a damn thing to actually help. This usually gets him hit - or Q hit, for stepping in to protect him, and damn does that make him feel awful.
Fears:
  • 1 - The dark. A general childhood fear of the dark that grew into something bigger and sharper from the turns his life has taken. The dark used to represent a general unknown and false monsters under the bed. Now the dark is death, and pain, and cold, and days without food and very real monsters lurking just inside the door or around the next corner. Whenever the sun sets he can't help the knot of anxiety that bundles in his chest, and he conjures little balls of witchlight whenever he can just to ease the hungry dark around him and keep it at bay.
  • 2 - Being a victim. This was a small fear, a logical and a distant one, before the incident where his father beat him nearly to death and he ended up losing the sight in one eye. He’ll always bear the scar and the vacant, blank stare where once he might have been called lovely. Now it’s something that haunts him and directs his choices. He doesn’t want to be in a position of weakness anymore. He doesn’t want anyone to have power over him. In fact, he’s rather terrified of being in that position at all.
  • 3 - Becoming his father. He heard over and over again that Quentin was the image of their mother, but no such connection was ever drawn for him. Once and only once someone commented on the familial resemblance between Kale and one of his parents - and it was "Boy, you look just like a young Johnny." It was only once, but the phrase has haunted him - along with the vague memory of how Johnny used to be - how much he used to love his father. To watch someone so loving, so warm, fall prey to his grief and rage is already terrifying and heartbreaking. But as Kale grew older, every time he saw his father hit Q he would wonder if that same evil was inside him and if one day it would come out.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Trauma Healing. This is the rough-and-dirty, ‘keep you alive until there’s time to fix you properly’ healing. Considering that he started to learn healing little by little on his own because of the abuse being dealt to his brother, he’s had the most experience with this kind of instant need, and since he started his training his new knowledge and skills have heightened the strength that was part-luck and part-knack into something more consistently reliable.
  • 2 - Bone Shaping. While he has only recently been able to truly perform this particular craft, he has taken to it quickly. He has a strong knowledge of and appreciation for anatomy and a keen sense of how the different pieces fit together, which is perhaps why he has grown so proficient so quickly in this arena.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Diagnosing Illness. Actual internal or external wounds are one thing, he’s about average when it comes to those for where he is in his training, but he struggles heavily with illnesses. What other Healers might be able to tell from a direct scan, Kale has to piece together from detecting prominent symptoms, conferencing with the patient, and then spending sometimes several hours or even days researching the hard way to diagnose before he can even begin thinking of a proper treatment. As of yet, he cannot cure illness with pure craft at all, even if he knows what the diagnosis is, and has to rely on tonics and medicines made from various herbs and infused with craft to strengthen them.
  • 2 - Reverse Healing. There are many reasons why one might want to use this kind of craft, and not all of them are malevolent. Kale understands that it can be necessary to open an old wound in order to fix a problem, or to heal it better, or because it gives a better, cleaner access to something that was internal. However, he can’t quite wrap his mind (or his craft) around how it’s done. He knows, in theory, but the application is something he is having significant trouble grasping.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Eve Heartly - Yellow to Rose Healer
Father: Johnny Heartly - Rose to Summer Sky Prince
    Siblings:
Quinten Heartly - Summer Sky Warlord, 11 months older

    History:

Eve and Johnny Heartly had two sons, born one right after the other all within the same year. An impressive feat, to be certain, when one considers that Eve must have gotten pregnant within a month of delivering her firstborn then had to raise a newborn while going through pregnancy all over again.

Thankfully, Eve and Johnny's marriage was a strong and loving one and she had all the support a wife could ever want from her husband and less than a year after their first little Warlord was born Eve successfully delivered their second.

Kale was a buoyant child, bright and playful and curious about just about everything. He wanted to touch and taste and feel. He wanted to know how things worked. To be quick about it, he was a bit of a handful - but at least he was a smiley and giggly handful. Even when things turned sour for his wee explorations he never sniffled or whined for very long - a trait that would follow him all the way through his childhood, even after their mother was viciously stolen from them when he was but five years old.

He hadn't been there, when it happened. Eve had taken his older brother Quinten to the market for groceries but Kale had been down with a minor fever so had stayed home with a kind neighbor to babysit him for the short trip. He can't remember much from that time, only his brother crying and having nightmares every night. Kale would crawl into bed with him and the two brothers would cuddle and hold each other and pray that their mommy was still loving them from the Darkness - and that everything would be okay. That daddy would be okay.

Unfortunately, daddy would not be okay.

To say that Johnny did not take the death of his wife well would be an understatement of high degree. Once an accomplished member of the Jacks, "Johnny Boy" Heartly spiraled downward hard and fast after losing the only woman he'd ever loved. He disappeared into the bottom of a bottle, drowning his sorrow in a green river and leaving everything else by the wayside. Including his contracts, and including his two small sons.

They had to leave their apartment, moved into a small shack with too many creepy crawlies and very thin walls. Daddy was gone, only a broken-hearted Johnny remained - and that man was not a kind one. He wasn't always a cruel one - but he was not kind.

Perhaps Q would never really be able to hate their father, but Kale could. He'd always been compassionate, and he understood that his father was hurting - but Kale wasn't just in touch with his compassion, he was familiar with the entire emotional spectrum and he couldn't ignore the fact that "Johnny Boy" had essentially abandoned them. Perhaps he might have been able to forgive that if he'd just become a pathetic lump, but he didn't. He had a temper - and he used it. Nine times out of ten, it was Quinten who felt the heat. Quinten, who looked just so much like their mother. Quinten, who was always looking out for him and protecting him and making sure he had a blanket and socks and food to eat. Quinten, who would get Johnny to focus on him instead even when it was Kale who had crossed him.

Maybe Kale could have forgiven him for neglecting them, but he couldn't forgive him for hurting his big brother - his best friend.

Life had taken a turn for the worst, but despite the creepy crawlies and the dark cloud hanging over their little shack, Kale's inborn optimism persevered. After all, he had his brother - and there were interesting curiosities all around him, every day. He particularly enjoyed climbing to the roof of the theatre and watching the productions from the large windows that let in the natural light. He was absolutely fascinated by the actors - and he loved being able to get stories without having to struggled through stupid squiggles all written on paper in order to get them. He would spend long hours fantasizing about being up on stage himself, living a thousand and one lives as he hopped through different worlds and stories night after night.

The one performance he would never forget, however, actually took place in the central market square one dreadfully hot summer when he was barely ten.

He and Q had taken refuge from the glaring sun in a shady little alcove that had a good view of the fountain - and that was where he was. The Magician. In truth, the landen male was probably in his early twenties, but he was very tall and had a beard so to Kale he looked much older and very wise - and he was making things vanish and reappear in thin air, completely without craft!! It was only the coolest and most amazing thing ever, and Kale was in rapt attention. He even left the protection of the shade to be able to watch closer. The more he watched, the more enraptured he became.

This was it. This was his Calling. He knew it. It was more than just the skill of the false magic that could fool the naked eye - it was the show itself. It was dramatic, and fun, and everything he loved about the theatre without all the boring parts about old ladies with seventeen jealous husbands.

He attended every show the man put on for the next two days, pestering him with questions and begging for him to teach him his special magic. The man must have found Kale endearing or amusing in some way because just before he left town he devoted a couple of hours teaching the boy a few tricks. The rest, he said, was up to him - and Kale swore he wouldn't disappoint.

He spent every free moment practicing and coming up with little tricks - and with practice, dedication, and a little bit of raw talent, he quickly became quite good.

Meanwhile, however - things were only getting worse back at the dreary little shack called "home." Johnny was getting worse. Sober, intoxicated, angry or apathetic - there was always the edge of violence to him, and when they were just about twelve the brothers decided to leave. They had always depended on each other anyway, and the coin they earned begging and thieving was all that really came in anyway. If they left, they wouldn't have to risk their hides and support their father's drinking on top of it.

    So, they left.

They survived on begging, thieving, and - as time went on - Kale's little performances. Those were the best payouts - because not only would he get little donations from watchers, but while he was distracting them with the show Q would lighten their pockets. The only problem was that his shows didn't just draw the attention of marks. It drew the attention of other street rats. Street rats that were often bigger and darker and meaner than the two scrawny little Warlord brothers. They had to be careful, or they'd end up with nothing to show for their work other than their own blood.

It wasn't easy, but the brothers survived. They made their way, carved out a little place for themselves on the streets. They started hanging around an older Warlord Prince by the name of Radu, who offered some protection from those who would target them for being small and weaker. More often than not, that protection came in retaliation when the brothers would get hurt. Q was the one who interacted with the Warlord Prince the most, though - his temper made Kale feel nervous. Even if it wasn't directed at him, the ire of an older, stronger male was too reminiscent of their father and Kale was not so quick to forgive and forget as his older brother.

Then, in the year both brothers turned seventeen, Q made the decision to follow in their father's footsteps and joined the Jacks. Within a year of that, both boys found themselves as Wards of the Territory Court following an incident at a very public, very important, party being hosted by the Territory Queen herself. This change in scenery rocked Kale. Whereas once he had been confident and happy, despite the stress of poverty, he was thrown into a world that made him feel lesser, stupid, and insignificant. He struggled, hard.

Quinten, too, seemed to be unable to separate himself from the streets and the life he had before, though for him it showed in his continued pull to take care of their abusive father. Johnny Heartly beat Quinten severely one night when he went to visit, and upon his brother’s return and seeing the state he was in, Kale couldn’t sit by any longer. He healed his brother as best as he could, as he had been doing for years, then he took off with the intention of killing their father once and for all. He failed, and ended up being beaten nearly to death. It took two Healers to pull him back together again. He lost most of the hearing in one ear and was completely blinded in one eye, with new and gruesome scars marring his face.

It was during his long recovery through Winter 192 that Victoria Adam, the Court Healer of the Territory Court, began to teach him the fundamentals of healing - of what it would take for him to become a Healer. After learning how he’d taught himself rudimentary skills to keep his brother alive over the years, and seeing potential in him, she decided to train him. Kale, needing to separate himself from the beast inside him that reminded him of his father - and the weakness that almost got him killed, clung to the notion of this potential, this iota of a chance that he could be more than just a monster or a victim. It was very slow training at first, because Kale was still recovering and because his illiteracy was a barrier between him and book learning - but with support from Lady Adam and the tutor hired for the wards, as well as Radu and Quentin - he has grown and the caste training has taken hold.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

There was a bounce to his step and a smile in the random little tune he was humming - which wasn't anywhere off from normal for the young Warlord. What was a little different was the weight in his worn little purse as he held it in his hands while he walked. He didn't know exactly how many marks he'd managed to make today - his numbers weren't really all that much better than his letters - but he was sure it was more than they'd had in months. As soon as he got back home he and Q would count it up and decide what they'd do with it. Winter was coming - maybe they could spring for some good coats this year!

A stroke of luck had put a very wealthy little girl passing by right as he pulled one of his best tricks. She'd tugged her indulgent grandfather to a halt before him and demanded to see the whole show from start to finish. Then she asked for more. And more. And more. The grandfather was somewhat embarrassed but too doting to drag the little girl away. He must have been impressed - more with how he handled the girl as opposed to the show itself, Kale thought - because he'd left quite the hefty tip. On top of that - since there were some clearly affluent spectators more people came by and donated. Money breeds money after all.

To top it all off - no one had come by immediately after to try and pound his earnings out of him, despite him being all by himself today! It was some stroke of fate or luck or something, but Kale wasn't going to question it.

Wearing a bright grin, he tossed the purse up high in the air and caught it a couple of times before vanishing it lest the wrong sort catch sight of him with it and get the idea to take it for themselves. Around a corner, down a few alleyways, up and over a roof and then down into another blocked-off alley and he was home. Q would be there - he'd had to stay behind because one of their animals was a very pregnant dog with a broken leg and both of them being gone all day made the boys worry about her so at least until she had the puppies and was on her way to recovery they took turns staying with her or at least made sure they weren't both gone at the same time for more than a few hours.

"Q! I'm back! And boy did I--" his voice stalled as he rounded the corner and saw his brother. There he was, sitting on the floor in the corner they'd made up for Lucy to have her puppies, smiling as he looked over the squirming little newborn pups.

But it wasn't the adorable little squeakers that had Kale pulled to a standstill. It was the ugly, cruel bruise curling over his cheek and near his eye. It was the cut on his lip that marred his happy smile. It was the way he sat, like if he leaned too much too the right it was hard to breathe.

Johnny. Quinten had gone to see him again. Brought him food and money that he didn't deserve - and all he got for it was this. Not for the first time, he considered telling Radu about their father - about how he still managed to hurt Q even though they'd been out of that shack for years. He bet that Warlord Prince would make sure that "Johnny Boy" never hurt his brother ever again.

He also bet that Q would never forgive him if he did that. That thought alone was enough to keep his mouth zipped - but there was a growing rebellion of guilt in his soul at that silence. What if one day Quinten slipped off to help Johnny and... didn't come back? Did he really value his brother's love over his brother's life?

Kale quickly shoved all those thoughts away - determined not to think about it. Determined not to give in to that sick worry that he was just as twisted as the bastard that put those bruises on Quinten's face. Instead he forced a smile and jogged into the room, greeting the little animals that came to meet him with pets and smiles before crouching down near Q and the puppies.

"They're adorable, Q! What should we name them?"

Yes. That was a much safer subject.
