The Basics

Character Name: Hikaru no Kita
Nicknames: previous name Jun Saito
Age and Birth Year:  32 (161 AP)
Race:  Short Lived
Caste:  Prince
Birth Territory: Tacea
Home Territory: Dena Nehele

Birthright Jewel: Uncut Rose
Offering Jewel:  Uncut Opal

Role: Geisha
Faction: (contracted to) Kagen Clan

Appearance

Play By: Siwon Choi
Distinguishing Features:
In his home Territory, there is little that would cause the man to stand out. He wears the clothing of his rank and position in the Geisha house. In Dena Nehele, however, his features appear quite foreign, as do the kimono and obi he often wears when the Red Queen he serves is entertaining guests or requires his presence. He also often smells vaguely of Tacean incense.

Personality

Personality:
Through years of training, Hikaru has a tight reign on his emotions. While he does feel, and feel deeply, his expression does not often betray those emotions he would rather keep to himself. He is often seen as composed and pleasant, as a proper geisha and companion should be. He seems mildly pleased with various types of conversation, and his temper is so rarely seen even when he is utilizing his combat training. While anger can add an edge to a fight, it can also cloud the mind and subvert all his experience.

Hikaru is very respectful of expectation. He has grown up an orphan without family, and has been gifted by Mother Night this family in the okiya. He is respectful of his position within the family, respectful of his place in regards to the women who contract services. He has no desire to upset the expectation placed upon him by his society. He has his position, and appreciates knowing how he is expected to behave; and as long as he has that security, his identity is certain. While he is somewhat fond of the Queen he now serves in as much as he can be fond for a client, he finds himself detesting the land she has brought them to. With the Queen, he knows his place, but he feels distinctly other in this land with strange customs. He far prefers Tacea to anywhere else in the world, and finds himself missing home more as each week slips by.

Hikaru is exceptionally religious. He rarely misses an opportunity for an offering, and spends many hours in meditation on his own. He also takes great pains to ensure he observes every festival while he is away from his homeland, though he admits his offerings are not so fulfilling as those offered on his behalf by a priestess.

Hikaru is not a very physical person. Even the handshake that is so popular elsewhere in the world is mildly offensive to him. He appreciates the small touches of affection only beneath the weight of intimate friendships, something that is hard formed over years of bonding. Hikaru can distance himself from it and endure a handshake or more, it would be rare to find him initiating any sort of contact with those he is not close to unless it is contracted.

The Prince has a deep love for music and the arts that transcends culture borders. While he is exceptionally fond of his own Territory's style, he can appreciate the music of Dena Nehele, and finds excuses to indulge in the art that is found in this new land. Training ensured he was capable of poetry and prose readings, performance with the koto and shamisen, dancing, and calligraphy, and his appreciation for them has demanded he continue to train and excel in them. He is also quite fond of teas, and has a deep regard for the subtlety of the blending. He blends his own leaves, and he rarely allows others to make tea for him.

Likes:
  • Teas. Particularly, good teas. He is not a fan of most teas made by others unless they have been trained in the same arts as he has been, finding that most lack the nuanced tastes necessary for a good tea. He blends his own teas from purchased leaves, and while he will drink tea that is made by others, he is still a bit of a snob about complimenting the teas.
  • Festivals and offerings. Growing up in a temple for the first eight years of his life, Hikaru is a very religious. Had he not been recruited to be a geisha, he could easily have followed the temple training to become a Priest. As it is, he never misses a festival and performs offerings at an alter he brought with him on the journey across the seas. When he is in Tacea, he spends a great deal of his time visiting the temples to make formal offerings with the support of the Priestesses.
  • Music. It is music that drew him to his current path, and it is music that is his specialty. While he excels at allt he disciplines of the geisha, it is the music where his passion lies. He excels at stringed instruments, though he has taken to attempting new styles and instruments since he left Tacea. Still, he retains a fondness for his koto.
Dislikes:
  • Dena Nehele. Actually, it could probably be more accurately described as being away from Tacea. He misses the friendship he shared with his aniki; he misses the climate, the food, the music. While he appreciates the opportunity to see more of the world, he finds it less satisfying than his home territory.
  • Debts. Hikaru does not like feeling indebted to anyone. He finds the chains of his debt to the okiya confining, and cannot wait to rid himself of them. While he is grateful for the opportunity, and he does not necessarily want to leave his okiya, he does not like the ties that bind him to such a fate. He desires being able to make his own fate.
  • Unwanted physical touch. Hikaru does not appreciate even the innocent touch on the shoulder of anyone save that of those he is close to. While with his brothers, particularly his aniki he is quite physical in brotherly affection, it is not a side that many get to see of the man.
Fears:
  • Being useless. Though his contract places him in the service of a Queen, Hikaru fears never truly serving well. He fears that his service will be seen as inadequate, sees his service being a necessity for his life, and believes he will only be fulfilled when he is in service to a Queen. Being in service to a Queen and still being unfulfilled, now that is truly terrifying to the one who has put all his hope into it.
  • Losing Kioshi. His aniki is the only family he has. While the temple raised him for the beginning of his life, it was the okiya who gave him the life he now enjoys - and more than that, it was Kioshi who gave him family and direction. His older brother gave him direction and a name - gave him family. He is the only person that Hikaru sees as family, and the bond between them is deep.
  • Never returning to Tacea. The longer he is away, the more he longs for his home. He has this fear that he will at some point be trapped in Dena Nehele or where ever else this journey takes him, and he will not be able to return to his home. He feels distinctly out of place everywhere else.
Craft Strengths:
  • Diplomacy. All geisha are trained in assessing and understanding the needs of the women they serve, but Hikaru's talent goes just beyond. He can typically assess the needs of a certain situation and maneuver the volatile tempers of the women he serves. While different cultures and personalities can at time give him pause, he can generally adjust to these needs fairly swiftly.  Hikaru utilizes this skill almost always without thought, assessing each room and taking in information subconsciously.
  • Whimsy Craft. Hikaru has developed this skill to use in tandem with his entertainment whether it be during his dances or during his musical performances. Typically they are created crisply with ease and smoothly folds in to what the performance entails.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Seduction Craft. While very useful for some in his position, Hikaru has no desire or heavy training in such arts, and as such any attempt at such craft typically backfires.
  • Aural Shielding. Geisha are used for soothing and entertaining the more volatile of females, often times as they conduct business. Having a strong aural shield is often important for such engagements, and hiring a geisha capable of providing one leaves those conducting business free to utilize their craft for other purposes. As Hikaru can scarcely create one, he has lost a few contracts due to their need for such a talent. It also is a nuisance when he desires to practice music without disturbing anyone else.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: None.
Father: None.
Siblings: None.
Aniki: Kioshi no Kita (142 AP) - Purple Dusk to Blood Opal Warlord Prince

History:
The Prince was born without a family and without a name. Both were necessary in order to thrive in Tacean culture. As was customary for those sons of families who could not afford another mouth to feed, the boy was left on the stairs of a temple in the middle of the night, nothing but a blanket wrapped around him as he lay waiting to be found. While not entirely common for the children to be left in the care of the temple which often acted as a sort of orphanage to raise these children. It was the family name of the highest ranking Priestess of the temple that he had been given, a simple chosen name to go alongside it.

Jun Saito.

From the time he was old enough to do the work, the boy was assisting the Priestesses in the Temple. Being so surrounded by a place of deep devotion, it was with great reverence that Jun took part in the festival ceremonies each year. Devoted to his duties whether they be to clean the steps of the temple for those who would visit or carrying notes to the city for a Priestess, Jun was an obedient child. It was only music that would distract him from his path; something he often heard coming from the local okiya. There were days after he had delivered his messages that he would stand outside the okiya and listen through the screens to the instruments being played.

When it came time for his birthright ceremony, a young Priestess performed the ceremony, assisting him in attaining the Rose jewel. It was scarcely a year afterwards that his life would change.

While he was scrubbing the steps of the temple early one morning, there was an unexpected, early visitor. The geisha Kioshi no Kita was a religious man, and had on occasion noticed Jun's work in the temple. It had been something he noted to the father of his okiya, who took time to visit the temple. It was less about the skills Jun possessed at such a young age and more about his determination mingled with his interest in music and the arts that earned him a place training alongside the other boys at the okiya in town. And while he had been on a track to train into Priesthood himself, the temple gladly gave the boy over to the okiya for more profitable training and a better life.

Jun had no idea who it was that had recommended him to the father of the okiya. And it was a handful of years before he even spoke with any of the full geisha. Jun was not one to intrude on their conversations during the hours they were not working. Instead, he focused on his studies of the arts, practicing his music. While the shamisen was the instrument of choice for most, Jun took more to the koto, appreciating the depth of music it presented. A deep love of music led him to seek mastery over a number of instruments during his training, spending his free hours practicing them in the courtyard of the Geisha school.

While he excelled at music, the expense of instruments increased the debt he owed the okiya.

As it was his interest was more towards the arts, it took more training before he met his aniki. Many of his age-mates were already beginning their next stage of training beyond the formal classes. Kioshi no Kita had positioned himself in the courtyard of the okiya, practicing his own instrument, and it drew the young trainee to him. Intricate melodies were made as the man's fingers danced across the strings of the shamisen. When Kioshi tested Jun, however, he declared him unfit for further training.

Prior to that moment, Jun had been content simply to be a student of the Geisha school - he had not given much thought to furthering himself yet, but watching the way the man had played the instrument stirred in him a longing to know more. With renewed focus, he attended his physical training exercises, practicing control and strength. After months of practice, Kioshi no Kita seemed satisfied with Jun's progress enough to mentor him.

His aniki spent most of his focus on the Jun's martial skills, practicing drills and sword movements until the boy was ready to collapse. He studied how to remain motionless, the subtle art of movement as a tool of communication for months before he ever stepped into a room where his aniki was entertaining.

It was at that time his mentor provided him with a new name, his own, tying the two of them together in bonds of family beyond a simple aniki. From the time he made his first debut as Kioshi's apprentice geisha, he was introduced as Hikaru no Kita.

For years he watched his mentor prepare and serve tea, sooth and entertain women with conversation and music. Hikaru learned the art of blending tea leaves and how to brew them in order to suit the tastes of his aniki's regular clients. His first task of entertainment had been to silently pour the tea for Kioshi's favored client while his aniki performed a featured dance.

Watching his aniki, he learned the beautiful subtlety of their art, the way the hand moved to hold the sleeve of the kimono aside, the art of holding a cup to be presented to a woman, the balance of movement with a sword in combat or even the movement of the body as an instrument was played. He practiced in privacy with Kioshi before he was prepared to entertain his first client. Beneath the supervision of his aniki he served the women publicly, though his aniki never accepted physical contracts with his clients.

While he turned to his aniki for every teaching, it was at the hands of a woman he learned the art necessary for pleasing women in the bedroom. While Kioshi had done so in the past, it was a geisha's right to choose their contracts, and he chose those which were more suited to entertaining and calming a woman with the arts and conversation; so he entrusted his apprentice to one of his own clients for training him. Hikaru found himself of his elder brother's mindset as well.

After his training was completed, Hikaru kept in close contact with his aniki. The two shared a deep bond from the years spent together, and the Prince held a deep affection for the older man. When the two are not at work, they could often be found in discussion an companionship. When the contract came to the okiya to undertake the virgin night for a young Queen, there were many who refused such a contract. Dark jeweled as she was, Hikaru eyed the high price on the contract, recognizing how far it would go to repaying his debts to the okiya.

With proper precautions written into the contract protecting him from repercussions should something go awry from the Queen's choice in lighter jeweled escort for the night, he agreed to the contract despite how he much preferred entertaining women with tea and music.

It was some time before he heard from the young Queen again, another contract specifically directed towards Hikaru. Two years in service to the Queen as she left Tacea. To be in contracted service to a Queen was the desire of every geisha, instilled in them from childhood. But beyond that, this contract represented freedom from his debts to the okiya who had supported him for so long.

The contract was specific in the duties expected, and they were quite well aligned with Hikaru's interests. He could pursue his music, serve the young Kagen Queen, and remove the weight of the debt he owed his house for his training.

He signed the contract and prepared his things for service to the Queen as she traveled abroad. With a farewell to his aniki, he left a man contracted and chained by debt, but would return free to pursue his own contracts and lifestyle.

Character in Play:
The scent of the incense filled the room, a haziness surrounding the Prince as he remained motionless where he knelt before the small altar. His knees pressed against the hard wood of the floor, hands resting in his lap clasped one inside the other as was appropriate for his sex during times of meditation and communion. Dark eyes remained closed as they had for the two hours he had been holding this vigil. The sticks of incense were almost worn down on the altar where they sat, the scent of them thick in the room.

Hikaru no Kita rested in this place, drawing deeply upon the Darkness as he remained as a statue. The journey had brought them to a new land with new customs and rules, and it was wildly unsettling. He wanted to take the food and fling it against the walls for it's lack of flavor, he wanted to demand the customs of this land take some form of control or even a simple consistency. Nothing here fit within the realm of what he was accustomed to, but the Prince would not forget his place. He would not forget what was demanded of him.

He had awoken two hours earlier than normal in order to complete this offering to remind himself. He spent time meditating surrounded by the scents of the temples of his homeland as comfort. It grounded him. And as the two hour mark slipped by, an expected knock on the door interrupted him. He opened his eyes. With movements like water, he tucked his toes beneath his feet and rose to standing. With a wave of his hand, he extinguished the embers of the incense and made his way silently to the door.

"Lady Kagen has requested your presence,"[/b] the servant said quietly. Hikaru simply inclined his head in acknowledgement before closing the door once more. While already dressed in a gray and black kimono, he needed to retrieve his shamisen. He vanished it as well as a few tomes of poetry to anticipate what it was she may desire to hear.

Each step was silent as he walked towards the room where he would sit with Lady Toyani no Kagen. The contract was for two years, but there were worse contracts in his mind. Being able to indulge in his music while eliminating his debt was a gift of the Darkness. He was growing rather fond of this Queen, and not only because she was someone who reminded him of home and gave him purpose. As he stepped into the room, he gave a respectful bow to the young Queen before fully entering the room.
