    Faction:

    Appearance

Play By: Lee Seung Jun (Seung Jun Lee)
Distinguishing Features: Lyoshka is a pureblooded Tacean, and is the absolute model of a young aristocratic woman. Unfortunately, he doesn't think of himself as a woman; Lyoshka is transgender. He devotes a not-inconsiderable amount of time to minimizing any feminine traits he has. Luckily, the genetic gods were kind to him. He can conceal his chest with standard undergarments, and traditional fashions tend to minimize the effects of his wider hips. He keeps his hair cropped short and close to his skull.

One way Lyoshka copes with his dysphoria is through his tattoos. He considers each one a reclamation of his body from the expectations of others, which is a flowery and poetic thought he would disclaim if anyone asked him. His tattoos can be mostly hidden beneath traditional clothes, and the ones that can't he can conceal through make-up and Craft. He feels his body is a cage and wants it to be at least an appealing cage to take up long-term residence in.

    Personality

    Personality:
Lyoshka learned all the wrong lessons from his proper Tacean upbringing. Like every Tacean, he was raised to be hyperaware of how he looked to outsiders. From the time of his Birthright, his parents hammered into him an understanding that the Red didn't mean anyone owed him anything. Rather, it meant that Lyoshka owed everyone everything. As such, it was repeatedly impressed upon him that his particular wants and preferences were without value. It didn't matter whether he was comfortable with a course of action. If it had even the slightest benefit to the least of them, then Lyoshka was expected to take it. Because of this, Lyoshka is self-sacrificing to a fault and protective over anyone that so much as glances at his sphere of influence. He will give of himself even to his greatest enemies because his parents taught him this was what is right and proper.

If Lyoshka put his stubbornness to use looking after himself, he'd be a formidable opponent. However, he's most likely to dig in his heels to enforce his idea of morality; if he doesn't like the effect something will have on other people, he'll set his teeth and argue about it until the cows come home. Lyoshka has a very low opinion of people who are willing to compromise their own morality to get results. He has an even lower opinion of people who point out that he doesn't exactly make his decisions based on his own considered moral compass, but rather out of a fear of rejection for the depth of his Jewels. Lyoshka despises being called out in public, and will just absolutely not have it if he can avoid it.

When Lyoshka's choices or actions are criticized in private, he shuts down. He hates being told he's wrong; he does listen to criticism, and doesn't argue over it or try to explain it, but he also resents being treated like a child (which, to be fair, he actually is, as the age of majority is twenty). Getting Lyoshka to actually talk to you about a problem is a feat which ought to come with a 24-carat gold award. He deals with caring about things by stubbornly insisting that he doesn't care. No matter how much he cares about something, he'll often insist that the decision should be in someone else's hands.

Though he says these things, some small part of Lyoshka is always aware that he's capable of forcing the issue. He wears Birthright Red, a level of strength most can only dream about. If something really terrible were to happen to him, something unbearable, he could stop it. He knows he could. Therefore, anything he didn't like that has happened to him is his own fault. Nothing that's happened to him is bad enough to justify any trauma responses he has, therefore he has no trauma... or so he thinks.

Lyoshka is soft-hearted, and hides all of this beneath as many prickles as he can find. He insists his goodness and kindness are duty-born, things he feels he has to do, but the truth is that his parents' taught morality jives incredibly well with Lyoshka's natural desire to see the people around him happy. He's a Healer, and his instinct is to protect and preserve life at all levels, whether he likes this particular life or not.

For all his training, Lyoshka has very poor impulse control. If he thinks something is a good idea in the moment, and if he thinks that it's immediately needful, he will act on it immediately. When (or if, but usually when) it turns out poorly, he goes into damage control mode, and acts to distance himself from whatever problem he's caused. He will insist that the action, once done, was clearly the only right action to take, obviously, definitely. Nevertheless, he will remain tormented by the negative consequences of his actions until he makes amends in whatever way seems most correct to him.

Lyoshka can be very forthright, when it suits him. Despite this, he's incredibly body-shy, especially for a Healer who sees so much of others' bodies. He is one of those who is never naked if he can avoid it. He stayed fully dressed through his Virgin Night. It was just a really awkward event, even though the man who did the deed was a good friend. Lyoshka really prefers the company of other men to the company of women, something that made him a bit of an oddity as a young person in Tacea; as an incredibly Dark Healer, he was expected to socialize with women who would hold similar social sway. He preferred to spend his time in the company of the geishas at whichever Court he was at, learning their graceful arts. He longed (longs) to be like them, but knows that with the psychic scent he has, it's impossible.

    Likes:
    • Flowers - There's a Tacean art of flower-arranging, which Lyoshka doesn't give two shits about, even though he pretends to like it and does alright at it. Lyoshka actually prefers drawing flowers, and enjoys their delicacy and grace of appearance when seen alone. His facility with growing them is useful to him as a Healer, since his skills at gardening translate well to maintaining a Healer's herb garden. Lyoshka has strong opinions about gardens because of his enjoyment of flowers and won't hesitate to tell someone if they're doing it wrong.
    • Art - Lyoshka's main hobby--since gardening and flowers are a necessity of his trade--is painting. He works with whatever's to hand as a creator of work, which usually ends up being ink and watercolor washes. Though he prefers to work in portraiture, his well-received pieces tend to be still lives and landscapes; some of his work has made its way into geisha houses in Ito, while at least one piece is in Yuki no Natsuhana's private quarters, as a gift from an apprentice to his training-master.
    • Yuki no Natsuhana - Lyoshka has trained with Yuki since she was twenty and he a child of thirteen. Though it was an unorthodox pairing due to her young age, it was viewed as necessary due to his Dark Birthright. There simply wasn't another Healer available to teach him who reached the depths of power that Lyoshka commanded almost at birth, and certainly not one within the Clan. Lyoshka began his training with Yuki's mother, and has always viewed her as sort of a quasi-older-sister-slash-aunt combo; when he began to realize he wasn't happy as a woman, it was to Yuki he turned. Though he knows Yuki doesn't understand him, really, he loves and trusts her in the same way a male might love and trust his Queen.
    Dislikes:
    • His caste - Lyoshka is a Healer. If he had been born a witch, and received a Red birthright, there still would've been a chance for him to train as a warrior and achieve some sort of masculine appearance in social situations. But because Lyoshka is a Healer, and a Healer with a Red, he is expected to serve in a Court--the Territory Court, preferably--and to bear children to the family line. He's been told, over and over, that his ultimate duty is to pass down his caste and his Dark blood. In a Court, they would never let him forget his gender. In a Court, Lyoshka would be constantly watched and every toe that slid out of line would reflect badly upon his parents. And all of this, he traces back to the fact that he was born a cursed Healer.
    • His mother - Lyoshka has few opinions about his father, though the man had the bulk of raising him. His mother, however, has always had a strident attitude when it came to maintaining their family's social status; there is no one she wouldn't use as a stepping stone to elevate their branch clan's status in comparison to the main Ariake line. When he was born, his siblings were promptly relegated to the sidelines by her greed for social coinage. He feels that his mother is obsessed with him, and that he'll never be free to pursue his own wants while she lived. She was a major influence on his decision to follow Yuki to Shalador after the volcanoes on the outlying islands erupted, in that he just wanted to get away from her.
    • Shalador - He finds the weather terrible, first of all. Second of all, the stress of being so close to another set of exploding volcanoes weighs on him. Third of all, their social structure is utterly fucked by the disappearance of their rightful Queen and any who might have succeeded her. Lyoshka is never sure who to look to for social guidance here, other than his constant touchstone Yuki, and the current state of upheaval in the jungle Territory just makes his anxiety over doing the wrong thing even worse.
    Fears:
    • Relationships - Lyoshka cares deeply for people. It's in his nature. He fears that he will grow to care so deeply for someone that he will choose to place their needs above his, that he'll be convinced to do something he knows is wrong or that hurts him in order to keep them happy. This is a very real problem for him, since he's never really learned to develop boundaries of his own; as a Healer, he's naturally inclined to sacrifice of himself in order to benefit those around him. His upbringing didn't teach him when to say stop, and Lyoshka has no idea when the right time to say no is. He fears becoming too reliant on the people who get close to him, to the point where he will value their needs over his own shaky boundaries. He fears becoming resentful of the people he loves because they ask him for what he can't give and then he gives it anyway. He fears what will happen if they choose to leave; he wears a Dark enough Jewel that he could make them stay. He doesn't want to get close enough to anyone that they can say they really know him, either. His need to be above reproach is very deeply ingrained, and he never wants to have to worry about what other people are saying about him.
    • The Black - Lyoshka knows there's a very real possibility he will come to wear the Black sometime in the coming year. He took care of his Virgin Night before leaving Tacea to ensure that he would be secure in his Birthright for when his Offering came upon him. But he's absolutely terrified of coming away from the altar with a Black Jewel in hand. He's not worthy of that sort of power; he feels he shouldn't be trusted with it. A Black Jewel, as his family has impressed upon him, means that your actions must be above reproach. It will be on him to decide what is right and good to do with godly power, but he will have to somehow balance that with doing literally everything he can to better the lives of those around him. That power is better placed in the hands of Queens, he thinks, but the possibility looms large only for Lyoshka, who doesn't want it.
    • Sex - Physical intimacy repulses Lyoshka. He has no problems with nudity (except his own) and no problem with other people having sex. But Lyoshka is incredibly uncomfortable with his own body and the idea of letting anyone do anything to his body is disgusting to him to the point of physical revulsion. Out of all the things his future held, the ones where he became a wife and mother were the worst, actually paralytic; the mere thought makes him freeze up.
    Craft Strengths:
    • Reverse Healing - Lyoshka doesn't use this skill to harm; such a thing would be repulsive to him. Rather, Lyoshka is adept at unwinding an improper healing or a dysfunctional repair and then fixing it properly. For instance, Lyoshka uses this skill to re-set bones that have healed wrong. He can also use this to correct for triage healing. However, this is still incredibly painful to the patient, and Lyoshka often knocks them out before doing anything using this skill.
    • Stasis spells - Lyoshka's quite skilled at spelling his healing brews and herbs to keep for much longer than the average. Essentially, his preservation spells are so effective that the effective shelf life or freshness of a brew, a flower, or food is doubled.
    Craft Weaknesses:
    • Curing disease - Lyoshka simply hasn't ever encountered that much illness to learn how to treat it. The potency of his Jeweled power is such that, in treating the disease, he also risks obliterating a patient's immune system in such a way that they often end up with a worse illness than they came to him with. He really doesn't like to deal with disease and will send a patient with one to someone who specializes in the treatment.
    • Battlefield and Triage Healing - Lyoshka doesn't react well to stress and he reacts even worse to the prospect of failure, both of which are absolutely everywhere in this style of healing. Part of the reason he's so good at reversing healing is that he is just shit at healing while under a time crunch. If a beam falls on a child and the healing has to be done quickly, Lyoshka can heal them, just it won't be pretty or neat and it will almost certainly need to be corrected later.

    History:
NOTE: Lyoshka is transgender, but hasn't told anyone other than Yuki no Natsuhana. For ease of review, I've used male pronouns and the name he will use in Dena Nehele throughout the history, though realistically he would have been using his birth name (Yua) and his natal pronouns (she/her/hers).

Lyoshka was born in 173, the youngest of five children. Unlike other families who had children until they produced their heiress, Lyoshka had two older sisters. His mother continued to have children past her heir and her spare because she wanted a girl. Specifically, a girl with a Healer caste that could be an age-mate to the Healer Queen Yuki no Natsuhana. While Lyoshka wasn't immediately spotted for a Healer, it also wasn't very long until he developed the caste's characteristic psychic scent. For this reason, he was already his mother's favored child, as he represented her best chance at joining her branch line of the Ariake into the main line once more.

In 181, Lyoshka had his Birthright and came away with the Red. In the ten years preceding his own ceremony, there had been a smattering of the darkest Birthrights, but no one would've known it by how his mother reacted. Lyoshka began training the next day with Ayame Natsuhana, the mother of Yuki Natsuhana. As the Natsuhana line had great potential to shape the future of the Territory, Lyoshka's apprenticeship with her was considered quite a coup.

That wasn't all the training he received. There were extensive protocol lessons, tutors in all the properly feminine arts, and lessons in fighting. Lyoshka's life was so tightly scheduled that he often felt he had no time to himself; he spent little time with his family, and frankly would've had a hard time describing them to someone if they asked. One of the only people to treat him like a young child was Yuki's mother. Ayame often told him about Yuki, and took him with her when she went to Black Immortal to see her daughter. Yuki was 15 when Lyoshka began training with her mother, and still with the Priestesses at Black Immortal, learning to work with her Sapphire. Lyoshka wasn't given this opportunity; where the similarly-Dark Queen was given the space to come into her power, Lyoshka's mother was domineering and demanded that he spend all of his time studying the ethics and necessities of wearing the Red. Though he was a child, he had no childhood in which to become comfortable with the power he wielded. The best thing that could be said about Lyoshka's training was that it was both broad and specific; he could comport himself well for his age, and was clever enough to impress.

Yuki returned from Black Immortal in 182, but continued training in Courts; still, she made time for Lyoshka. Perhaps she felt kinship with the Dark child, who often seemed worn out by the time he was done with training with Ayame, though he had hours of lessons left to go. The Healer Queen carved out a small space for Lyoshka to behave as a child, and that endeared her to him beyond all others. She was indubitably still a teacher figure, but like Ayame, she snuck her lessons into stories and activities. There was never a sense of lightness about it, since Lyoshka's morals and ethics were a matter of Territory-wide importance due to the power he could one day wield, but it was still an acknowledgement of his age that he valued deeply.

In 186AP, Lyoshka's apprenticeship was transferred to Yuki. Yuki had hit her age of majority and made her Offering. As a Ebon Gray Healer, Yuki was uniquely placed to ensure that Lyoshka learned the proper proportion of power to use when performing Healing Craft. This brought him to the new Territory Court, under the rule of the Dowager Dragon; he learned the nuances of Protocol by watching Hinata and Yuki and their courtiers, and practiced his Healing with Hinata's High Healer, when he wasn't learning with Yuki. He often spent time with the children of those courtiers, when Yuki was busy performing her duties as the ascending Queen. For the first time, he was around people his own age.

It was within this context that he became aware of a simmering discomfort. This feeling of alienation didn't come from the people outside and around him; it came from within. He had little space in which to truly examine that feeling, and it came to him in blips and blobs. Moments spent admiring the young men around him, not aesthetically, but enviously; the coming of his moontime made him physically ill; his body, ever something he had regarded with a Healer's detachment, swelling and transforming in ways that brought him little but distress.

In 189, when he was sixteen and Yuki was twenty-three, he pulled his Queen aside and told her the conclusion he had drawn. He couldn't face the life which his family had drawn out for him. Even as he told Yuki that he felt like a stranger in his own body, his mother was arranging his marriage to a Warlord Prince in the main line of their Clan. It wouldn't be consummated for years and years, but it was the culmination of Noriko's plotting and planning, the end result of her dreams to join the main line of Ariake and to have that prestige conferred upon her.

His first meeting with Makoto was at the Territory Court, on the last night of the Star Festival. His mother had come to the Festival with his new fiancé in tow; Lyoshka was repulsed by the idea, and his reaction displeased his mother while also creating a minor scandal for the Clan. Noriko, as wel as Makoto's mother, continued to find reasons for Makoto to spend time around the Territory Court; he was in contention to become one of Yuki's Seven Daggers. Lyoshka longed to beg Yuki to send him away, but felt that his discomfort came secondary to Yuki's safety.

In 191, shortly after the kindling festival, two of Tacea's volcanoes erupted, destroying two of the offshore islands utterly. Lyoshka was both horrified at the death and destruction, and relieved when Yuki and her steward, Seung Corro, presented the idea that Yuki follow an ancient scroll to a foreign land called Shalador. Even Noriko couldn't argue against the Dragon Mother's command that he go with her into the greater world, and she didn't even try.

However, Seung Corro refused to bring a Dark-Jeweled Healer who hadn't undergone their virgin night to the outer world. Last time he had traveled to the mainland of Terreille, the place had been rent apart by war. There was a nonzero risk that the Eyriens had gone back to their pillaging ways, and he would have no Broken witches on his conscience. That, Noriko did try to interfere with: she attempted to place Makoto, Lyoshka's future husband, as a possibility for the completion of his Virgin Night. Yuki offered to perform Lyoshka's virgin night herself, but their close connection made the thought rather repulsive to Lyoshka. One of her Seven Daggers wore the Ebon-Gray; but Lyoshka didn't know him well.

With Yuki's assistance, however, a fourth option was found. Seung Corro's son, Haneul, wore the Gray as his Jewel of Descent. He was a friend, one who was experienced with Healers for all he'd rather take a nap. And so it was that Haneul helped Lyoshka through his Virgin Night, as a favor to his father and to his Queen, Yuki.

Once the deed was done, Lyoshka boarded a ship with Yuki and those members of her Court that were chosen to come along with her, bound for the land of Shalador. Yuki intends to return once the answer to their concerns is found, but more and more Lyoshka sees this new land as an opportunity to leave all of those duties behind him.

    Character in Play:
NOTE: Because the sample is set before Lyoshka acquires the name Lyoshka, I've used his birth name (Yua) in this writing sample.

It wasn't that Makoto was unattractive, or unkind. Yua had no objections to him on those bases. He was sure that Makoto would make a good friend, if he wasn't so dead-set on taking Yua to wife. For that reason--and others--he had turned to a male with whom he was a friendly, a male who had bonded to the same Queen that Yua had. Haneul was the very essence of an unthreatening male, except for the Gray jewel he never wore. But it was the Gray that made him perfect for this: Haneul was one of the few males on the island whose Jewels outranked Yua's birthright.

There was a bed behind Yua, and two glasses of wine mixed with a brew that smelled strongly of ginseng and ginger. Night of Fire, mild safframate, the only way Yua would be getting out of this alive and unbroken. He felt no desire for Haneul, only to have this whole ordeal behind him, where he would never have to think of this again. He pulled at the collar of his juban. It was so damn hot in here, and Haneul wasn't helping at all by being quiet back by the bed.

"Staring outside won't get this over with, Yua," said Haneul. Which actually was also unhelpful. He finished folding the kimono he'd helped Yua remove and sat on the edge of the bed. Yua chanced a look over his shoulder; Haneul looked the same as he did when bringing his father the lunch the Steward had forgotten. He didn't even know what to do with that. As much as he didn't want to be here, it was offensive to think that Haneul might be bored. "What's up?"

Yua could explain. The part of me you're about to stick part of you into shouldn't be there. Mother Night made a mistake when she made me, my body is wrong and I resent that. But he couldn't imagine that Haneul would understand. Yuki didn't understand, and frankly, Yua didn't either. All that, and he didn't want to see his friend laugh at him. Surely he'd already be a laughingstock.

Haneul got up, the mattress wheezing, and bumped shoulders with Yua. "You don't have to get naked, you know," he whispered, conspiratorially. "Sex through clothes is pretty alright. I won't tell."

That was so Haneul that Yua couldn't help but laugh. "How sweet," he said. He ran his thumbnail over the reinforced collar of his under-robe. Then, flushing: "You're serious?"

"Yeah," said Haneul. They bumped shoulders again. "Wanna get it over with?"
