Personality

Personality:
Hana makes friends easily; he's sincere and interested in the goings-on of his friends and family, and always available as a shoulder to cry on. He gives sage advice and always seems to have energy for helping the people around him. However, while he is an excellent listener, he almost never reciprocates emotional vulnerability. Hana keeps his cards close to his chest, so while he is an endless font of sympathy, company, and kind words, he almost never shares his own troubles and traumas. He believes that the best thing for sorrow or negative feeling is to do something, and so when Hana is upset, he throws his emotions into his art. Sharing how he feels is burdening other people, a perception he holds because of the drama of his teenage years.

Hana is troubled by persistent nightmares, flashbacks, and a strong belief that he will never, ever be good enough to keep the people he loves alive. He doesn’t trust people, so he encounters difficulty in trying to make the long-term and enduring connections that come with deep, emotional friendships. Hana badly wishes for others to see him as a kind and generous person, but he suspects when his situation requires it he'll find himself incapable of being genuinely kind or generous. He worries he fakes the care he expresses for others, and that people can tell that his emotions just aren't as deep as he says they are. It terrifies him to think that other people might be able to see just how rotten and empty he is at the core, and in response, he tries to keep all of his negative thoughts and feelings to himself. He fears that his desire to live up to his own standards will make him a cold and bitter person, but fails to recognize that he's already a great deal of the way there.

When confronted by a bad situation, Hana believes in hoping for the best, but planning for the worst. While he believes in cliches like "follow your dreams," and "reach for the stars," he's painfully aware that these goals require great self-sacrifice. He has faith in the people around him, but what he doesn't have faith in is the general trend of the universe towards justice and kindness. Hana knows the world is cruel, that people as a whole are terrible, but he feels strongly about trusting in other people to be as good at heart as he thinks they are. This can lend him a paradoxical cynicism when he deals with trouble: though he trusts in people to do what they have to do, he doesn't trust the world not to get in the way. Sometimes, people read him making a backup plan as a sign that he doesn't believe they'll do as they've said, when really, it's him planning for them being unable to do what they've said they'll do.

Hana is a Prince, and a Dark-Jeweled one besides. Though he maintains a friendly face and a warm exterior around others, it's only a facade that conceals a tidal wave attempting to flow in the river's path. He turns his passion (and his sorrow, and his rage) inwards, locking even the coldest of his rages behind a desire to be seen as trustworthy, nonviolent, and level-headed. His energy comes out best when he is pursuing a new image with a padded bag full of memory crystals at his hip; he feels most alive when admiring the world around him. Yet even so, he can lose himself in brooding with the best of them, takes the prevention of every bad thing that happens to people he unwillingly cares about on his own shoulders and won't hear of the blame being assigned elsewhere, he never releases a grudge once it's formed, and his need for control (of himself, of his appearance, and of how others think of him) is one that he just can't smother behind a mask of kindness.

Despite his skills and achievements, he has a serious case of imposter syndrome that often shocks him out of his groove when he's interacting with others. He measures his self-worth based on a lofty goal of being valuable to the people around him, even to the point of being willing to serve as the fall guy to spare someone he loves pain.

Likes:
  • Photography - Hana is a talented photographer--it's the reason he's cultivated a nascent talent with memory crystals--and it’s his skill with the art that has permitted him the freedom of movement and aesthetics in Tacea’s highly stratified society. He appreciates his own photos, of course, but he also enjoys seeing the photographs of others. Photography has also enabled him to cultivate an interesting series of acquaintances, from Queens to landen, which appeals to him and to his family, who desire to use those connections for familial gain.
  • Friendships - Hana likes having a variety of light, superficial friendships to call on when he wants to talk, go to a teahouse, or fuck. Surrounding himself with people reminds him of home. He’s easy with physical affection and smiles, and generally can come up with something interesting to do or somewhere interesting to go.
  • The Monastery - Hana ran away from home when he was young and ended up in the care of the monks of the north. While there, he found peace like he hasn’t encountered before or since. He learned to read and write, skills his family has him conceal to save their reputation, and made friends that he’d hoped would last a lifetime. Now he’s not so sure.
Dislikes:
  • Existing to others when he’s not around - Hana hates knowing that people can talk about him when he’s not privy to the conversation. He hates knowing that people might know something about himself that he doesn’t, because they may have a much more rounded perception of him than he has of himself. In addition, his family makes constant plans to account for his future without his input, which leaves him feeling dangerously out of control.
  • Sharing information about himself - He likes to have people around, ideally people who like him, but he doesn’t want to be expected to be emotionally vulnerable to them. Others sharing the details of their lives with him makes him tremendously uncomfortable if he is expected to reciprocate their confidences; he'd much rather keep himself to himself, and serve as a storehouse of other's hurts. He will make his excuses and absent himself from the discussion as soon as possible if it seems like the discussion is trending towards someone confessing feelings for him. Though others may consider themselves his friend, often they only know the face he carefully curates and presents to the world.
  • Breaking his vows - Despite being released from his vows by the monks of Goryu-en, Hana still tries to maintain the three vows he took to the extent he is able: he tries not to lie, refuses to be the aggressor in any fight, and maintains as minimalist a lifestyle as he can.
Fears:
  • Being caught out as a fake - Hana theoretically has skills that make him rather unique among Tacean males, but he just doesn’t see it. In his heart, he thinks of himself as nothing more and nothing less than a monk from Goryu-en, and worries that he will eventually be found out to be playing pretend at being a noble son.
  • Getting married - Hana is a monk (at least at heart, if not ecclesiastically). The very first vow a monk in Tacea makes is a vow to give up all familial bonds, which he is pretty sure excludes matrimony. Not only that, but matrimony represents a close bond, necessitating all the things he dislikes: emotional closeness, civil ties, and breaking the most fundamental of his vows to Goryu-en. Unfortunately, this is his purpose in going to Dena Nehele, so tough luck, kid!
  • Failure - Before he left Tacea, his family made it clear that if he wasn’t pleasing enough to Sorinna Roman to secure the diplomatic ties the Dragon Mother sent him to secure, there would be consequences for the monks that he still considers his true family. There is very little he wouldn’t do for Sora in order to ensure that Dena Nehele and Tacea’s diplomatic relationships remain warm and mutually profitable.
Craft Strengths:
  • Memory Crystal Manipulation - Hana is a photographer, and a good one. His keen eye for detail means that his memory crystals are much more detailed than others at his Jewel rank and experience level.
  • Weakness Identification - Not so much a combat skill as a skill used in fortifications and negotiation. Hana is relatively good at reading people, and takes less time to benefit from this aspect of Prince Craft.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Combat Craft - Hana is not trained in combat-oriented Craft, though he can use a quarterstaff or naginata in a fight (for self-defense).
  • Emotional Projection - Hana has an incredibly difficult time projecting an emotion that he doesn’t feel. This method of deception isn’t open to him.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Hanami Hisakawa, Blood female, 55 (139)
Father: Sanzuke Nanizawaya, White Warlord, deceased 192 at 73
Siblings: Hanako Hisakawa, Tiger Eye Queen, 17 (176)

History:
Hanaki was born to Hanami Hisakawa from an unacknowledged liaison. Hanami was the first among the Hisakawa family’s many daughters, and much was made of her little Prince insofar as he was a sign of Hanami’s fecundity. Despite the seeming good fortune of his birth, his mother did not conceive again until he was eight years old.

The Hisakawa family had long held dominion over the mountains to the north of Izayoi territory, serving as erstwhile defenders against the treacherous Shingetsu to the north. This meant that they had close contact with the monasteries, especially the main complex of Zazen-ji, in the heights of the mountains. While the monks were insular as a group, individuals could be counted on to help keep watch for families on both sides of the border. There was often an itinerant monk in residence at the Hisakawa seat, and Hanaki, deep in his lessons as befit a someday-Dark-Jeweled Prince, spent much time with whichever brother was there. When Hana was four, his mother secured a long-term resident monk to serve as a go-between for the Hisakawa and the monasteries.

His temple name was I Complete the Circle of Myself, but Hana knew the Rose-Jeweled Prince as Enzo. Lacking a father figure, even among his many uncles, he quickly became attached to Enzo, who returned the attachment with kind and patient tutoring in the philosophies of Tacean religious thought. Though Hana also received traditional tutoring, Enzo’s lessons soon became Hana’s favorites; he leaned history, physical combat (not combat Craft), and honor at the monk’s feet, and tried to tail him everywhere. Perhaps recognizing a hunger for knowledge in Hana, Enzo began to teach him to read and write Common at the age of six. It was a dangerous gambit, but Hana kept the lessons secret, and Enzo was careful to only instruct Hana when watching eyes were far away.

Shortly after his Purple Dusk Birthright, Hanami finally found herself pregnant again; she gave birth to his little sister, Hanako, a Queen. In any other family, Hanaki would’ve been quickly pushed aside in favor of Hanako, or his life would have at least been changed. In the large Hisakawa family, however, the difference was barely noticeable. Hanako and Hanaki led very separate lives, their ages, Castes, and eventual fates a massive gap between them. However, the arrival of a Queen in a year when new Queen births were very low meant that there was a real possibility that Hanako might someday rise to the position of District Queen, ruling over the northern Izayoi retainer families, or perhaps even Province Queen, if Atsuko no Izayoi bore no children. Scrutiny on Hana increased, as his reputation would necessarily affect Hanako’s reputation and future chances.

It was that scrutiny that finally revealed Enzo’s lessons in literacy. The matriarch’s reaction to such corruption of one of the males was quick and merciless. Enzo was put to death, and Hana was put into confinement. None of the Hisakawa matriarchs struggled to keep the debate about what would be done with him a secret; some wanted him sent to the monasteries himself, as so many other broken or ruined males were. Others wanted to use a Black Widow to erase the knowledge of his literacy from his mind. A third faction wanted to simply pressure him to keep his talents secret and utilize them for their own gain; a literate male could be a powerful political asset. And a fourth thought that he should be sent to the geisha. If it was good enough for the Shingetsu, it was good enough for them.

In the end, none of those factions won out. Once his Purple Dusk had regenerated enough power, Hana blew open the walls of the room where he was being kept and escaped.

Had the Hisakawa lived anywhere else, he likely would’ve been recaptured quickly and returned to the care of a Black Widow. But they lived in the mountains, and Hana knew them well from lessons with Enzo. He didn’t find his way to the monastery on his own, but he knew the temple-signs the monks left as they wandered. He found a monk, and told him what had become of Enzo, and why he had run from his home.

Hana was thirteen when Calm Compassion took him to Goryu-en, a subsidiary temple. He joined the novice class of children, studied the articles of faith and the lessons on calligraphy that Enzo had told him about. He had been happy with his birth family, but he was no less happy among the monks. Perhaps he was even happier, with his ambitions and Princely drive for knowledge encouraged, rather than restricted. However, he couldn’t bring himself to build the close-knit friendships that many other novices did. The confidences he had shared with Enzo--his father in all but name--had been the death of the monk, in the final analysis. His own family had been willing to destroy his mind to control him. He would never allow himself to be so vulnerable again. At eighteen, he was permitted to take the first vow, and took the temple name Melancholia Enshrines All Triumph, a poignant reminder of how Enzo had died to bring him to this point.

At nineteen, Hana took his second vow (to abstain from false speech). He made his Offering at twenty, walking away with the Sapphire. After his third vow to abstain from killing, he took up an assistant’s role in managing the possessions and inventory of the monastery, and it was in this role that he encountered his mother once more.

The Hisakawa had suffered a social blow upon the disappearance of the Dark-destined son; his little sister had gained a Tiger Eye birthright. Hana meditated on the matter, decided he didn’t care, but the Hisakawa wanted him back under their control and were willing to harm the monks to do it. Their control of the south side of the mountains meant that they could make it incredibly difficult for the monks to support themselves or trade in the southern half of Tacea. After consultation with the Goryu-en monks, Hana was released from his vows and returned to the care of his family.

They treated him with caution. He was not a male like they’d wanted him to be; he was a dangerous thing, a sword with no hilt. They could not trust him, in part because they had been so incautious with their plans, but they needed him. His return, hale and healthy, restored their profile some little bit, but he could hardly be sent to serve in a Court as their face when they didn’t know him. Yet what else could they do?

In the end, they sent him to Ito in 189, ostensibly for Court polish as an escort to Hanako, his little sister. By day, he did his work for the family, always aware of the danger to the monks if he didn’t perform. At night, he found his way into the underground of Tacea’s blooming countercultural movement, and from there to the halls of the Hara School. Seeing the way the wind was blowing, the Hisakawa permitted him to take a few lessons there. Between his Dark Jewel and his natural eye for aesthetics, he developed a talent for photography.

Art was not a masculine habit, but Yuki Natsuhana’s Court was coming into power, and they were known to skew young and liberal. Permitting Hana to become known as a photographer was a long shot, but the dividends it could pay for Hanako and the Hisakawa were great; a young Queen with experience serving in the Court of a Dragon Mother would have no heights to which she could not ascend. He was permitted to work, stepping outside of the proscribed social role in order to collect information and reputation for his younger sister’s eventual rise.

His profession made him many acquaintances, but Hana remained standoffish and unwilling to form deep friendships. He weathered the change in Courts from Yuki to Ishiyo; his family pulled him north again, away from Ito, to remove the shame of their artistic male from the sight of the Izayoi’s traditionalist Queen. But the tides turned again, and a Tang Queen was raised to the Dragon Throne. Her policies, while not as liberal as Ishiyo’s, were more friendly towards him, and the Hisakawa were willing to support her on one condition: that she find something to do with him that would put the Hisakawa’s shameful, artistic son to use for the good of Tacea.

Xiong Teng, in her wisdom, sent him to Dena Nehele to play suitor to Sorinna Roman.

Character in Play:
The Tang Queen of Tacea would've looked a Tacean Queen to any outsider, but to any Tacean of the mainland, she looked like an outsider herself. It was clear in the way she knelt atop the throne platform that she would've preferred a more standard chair. The kimono she wore fit her well and accented her delicate beauty, but it constrained her. She was discomfited by pretending to be a Queen of the Four Clans of Tacea, and Hana understood. It made him uncomfortable to pretend to be a male of the Four Clans of Tacea, too.

It didn't matter either way. The lives of his family depended upon his ability to convince the Hisakawa line that he was a useful male. Even if the monks could hold the Hisakawa mercenaries off, he knew that it would cost too many lives. It would hurt the people he loved, too, and he couldn't have that. So he'd behave, and go where Xiong Teng sent him. Perhaps to the south, to help the archaeological dig that some Ariake was performing in the ruins of Chang'an. His mother would prefer that: a quiet life or a silent execution. The price of his mother's support for the Flower Queen was Hanaki's honorable disappearance from the Territory stage.

He understood. That was simply how it was. Men were bargaining chips to be moved down here among the mainlanders.

Ready to hear his sentence, if not exactly eager, Hana knelt just behind his mother. "Lady Hisakawa," said Xiong Teng to his mother. She had a low voice that dripped the Tang accent like honey. "Prince Hanaki-san. I've found a place for you to serve the motherland, if you are prepared to hear it."

He genuflected, touching his forehead to the tatami floor. "I serve at the Dragon Mother's whim," he said. He even meant it, a little. He pushed himself back up and folded his hands properly in his lap, small and forgettable.

Xiong Teng smiled thinly. "You do. I have secured for you a place of honor. You will go to Dena Nehele to serve in the Territory Court. Specifically, to serve the heiress of the Territory Queen, a young woman named Sorinna Roman." She made a ritual gesture to the Steward, where he stood before the high dias. "Prince Corro has the details for you."

Hanaki genuflected again, then rose to his feet. His mother's triumphant smile passed by in his peripheral vision as he exited the throne room behind Prince Corro.

So... it was death, then. A shame. For some reason, he had thought a Tang Queen would be different.
